2018-08-09 06:04:53 PM oliviabrokenshire Okay I didn't know if it would be "too dressy" for an activity position
2018-08-09 06:04:55 PM lisaad Your're very welcome
2018-08-09 06:05:04 PM amymc can you give smaller pieces to begin with
2018-08-09 06:05:12 PM feleciap18 wehave to find something for her to eat
2018-08-09 06:05:27 PM lindsaypkrull Smaller pieces could be a good idea
2018-08-09 06:05:29 PM kathyhughes There is no magic answer ...it seems that when she wants more and there isn't any then she should be directed to the nurses station for a treat
2018-08-09 06:05:34 PM martyr58 Hello all!
2018-08-09 06:05:36 PM oliviabrokenshire yes i agree with the smaller porition
2018-08-09 06:05:49 PM jenniferr2018 enter the chat room
2018-08-09 06:05:53 PM melissaz That is a tough spot Felicia
2018-08-09 06:05:55 PM kathyhughes but then all the other residents will suffer...I would not be taking her to cooking programs
2018-08-09 06:06:09 PM feleciap18 that is another issue all halls get a snack crate
2018-08-09 06:06:10 PM jenniferr2018 hello everyone
2018-08-09 06:06:20 PM kathyhughes and I would have a conversation with the dietician
2018-08-09 06:06:21 PM myriamr Felicia always do progress notes about this resident giving you problems so you have that part cover
2018-08-09 06:06:24 PM lisaad Remember if you get the job you will be representing your new facility so you want them to see you as an assest
2018-08-09 06:06:34 PM oliviabrokenshire bring it up in a care conference meeting
2018-08-09 06:06:48 PM oliviabrokenshire that is good to remmeber thank you lisaad
2018-08-09 06:06:49 PM myriamr and the IDT meeting too
2018-08-09 06:06:51 PM kathyhughes thats their problem Felecia...what the halls have ...you can only give her what you have
2018-08-09 06:07:00 PM feleciap18 and once she eats all the snacks on her hall she then goes hall to hall and will stop visitors sayingshe is hungry
2018-08-09 06:07:01 PM jenniferr2018 what is the topic
2018-08-09 06:07:10 PM sfaria I struggle with the snacks when in activities.....You're right, you can only give what tey have
2018-08-09 06:07:14 PM feleciap18 and she could have just ate
2018-08-09 06:07:18 PM kathyhughes Well we have 2 topic
2018-08-09 06:07:36 PM sunshine2018 Yes speak with the dietician, they might be able to give her extra snacks for you to keep for you to have
2018-08-09 06:07:36 PM kathyhughes We have Olivia having an interview tomorrow
2018-08-09 06:07:43 PM melissaz Does the resident have a fridge in her room/apartment? Could the family bring in some food for her? But it's starting to sound like a compulsion issue.
2018-08-09 06:07:47 PM myriamr Good luck Olivia
2018-08-09 06:07:48 PM rickyd I find myself documenting more and more... once i learned about progress notes. I also bring issues up at our IDT meetings, triage, and staff meeting; however, I have found that Activities Director's input often go in one ear and out the other. Meaning I often see different sides of an individual than what the clinical staff see.
2018-08-09 06:07:50 PM lisaad We always try to make sure everything is care planned in--if it's in her care plan to only have certain amounts of food or snacks then that's it--it kind of shifts the blame *-)
2018-08-09 06:07:53 PM jadams69 sounds like more of a behaviour problem then a hunger issue. Psych eval
2018-08-09 06:07:57 PM jenniferr2018 good luck Olivia too
2018-08-09 06:08:08 PM lisaad yeah JAdams!
2018-08-09 06:08:10 PM amymc We have a lady who does the same thing

2018-08-09 06:08:19 PM feleciap18 that is what i said its there problem and when they cant solve it theysend her to activities
2018-08-09 06:08:22 PM kathyhughes and Felecia who has a Bariactric resident who crys when she can't have all the food in activities and apparently is not on a diet
2018-08-09 06:08:26 PM nclairsainvil i have a resident who does the same thing
2018-08-09 06:08:30 PM jenniferr2018 true
2018-08-09 06:08:50 PM lisaad That's a tough one Felicia
2018-08-09 06:08:59 PM mmierez enter the chat room
2018-08-09 06:09:02 PM feleciap18 she is not on a diet anddiabetic
2018-08-09 06:09:03 PM amymc We are not a bariatric facility so our lady is getting very close to having to go somewhere else
2018-08-09 06:09:10 PM kathyhughes It is a manipulative behavior and all dept are effected
2018-08-09 06:09:16 PM lisaad By the way Hi to all here from ME1-030618
2018-08-09 06:09:18 PM sunshine2018 that is very tough but I truly believe the dieticians can help
2018-08-09 06:09:22 PM myriamr She need to tell what is going on in the IDT meeting, also do progress notes and put this in her care plan
2018-08-09 06:09:29 PM feleciap18 yes maam they are
2018-08-09 06:09:29 PM jenniferr2018 she probably feels she is missing something ....is
2018-08-09 06:09:30 PM jadams69 yes kathy pysch eval and medicate
2018-08-09 06:09:38 PM kathyhughes She should have a psych eval
2018-08-09 06:09:45 PM mmierez hello everyone
2018-08-09 06:09:45 PM oliviabrokenshire i agree
2018-08-09 06:09:53 PM myriamr yes social service need to be involve too\
2018-08-09 06:09:57 PM lisaad hello mmierez
2018-08-09 06:10:00 PM sunshine2018 I agree that could help too
2018-08-09 06:10:06 PM kathyhughes and the discussion during care plan meeting should revolve around her behavior....
2018-08-09 06:10:07 PM jenniferr2018 oh yes social service does..family
2018-08-09 06:10:11 PM kathyhughes not her eating
2018-08-09 06:10:13 PM jadams69 yes definately social services involved
2018-08-09 06:10:14 PM oliviabrokenshire social worker can really help and being in care conferences
2018-08-09 06:10:14 PM feleciap18 but for some reasonthe activity department.
2018-08-09 06:10:15 PM myriamr yes agree
2018-08-09 06:10:21 PM mmierez hi lisa
2018-08-09 06:10:23 PM lisaad I camein on the tail end but what does her family say about all the food issues?
2018-08-09 06:10:28 PM jenniferr2018 I agree behavior rather then food
2018-08-09 06:10:36 PM feleciap18 social services says giveher what she wants
2018-08-09 06:10:38 PM myriamr we have our social worker in our care conference
2018-08-09 06:10:40 PM amaliaagallas although i work in MC we have a resident in NC who is on a restricted calorie amount per day to prevent him from eating all day long
2018-08-09 06:10:52 PM feleciap18 she has been careplanned for it
2018-08-09 06:10:55 PM martyr58 we have a hoarder in the memory care unit I am in--- she had 12 little waters and 9 puddings in her room. She also collects newspapers. we try to clean them out when she is in an activity.
2018-08-09 06:10:57 PM amymc is the doctor involved
2018-08-09 06:11:01 PM sfaria I am lucky, we truly follow the IDT approach
2018-08-09 06:11:15 PM lisaad IDT?
2018-08-09 06:11:21 PM kathyhughes She has issues that only a psychologist can handle and activities should give her deversional activities that do not have food as the center of the program
2018-08-09 06:11:26 PM myriamr felicia then just document everything the resident do and also what other staff say to you when you ask for help
2018-08-09 06:11:31 PM sunshine2018 we had a resident that used to go around trying to eat the others residents food.
2018-08-09 06:11:32 PM feleciap18 it seems toget worse
2018-08-09 06:11:38 PM jessicas Yes IDT is amazing
2018-08-09 06:11:41 PM jenniferr2018 How is the residents memory..does some of the behavior show up because of memory
2018-08-09 06:11:44 PM lisaad left the chat room
2018-08-09 06:11:50 PM lisaad enter the chat room
2018-08-09 06:11:52 PM amaliaagallas our horder in our MC unit steals all of our spoons and centerpieces lol
2018-08-09 06:11:56 PM jadams69 yes get her involved with something that does not include food
2018-08-09 06:11:57 PM kathyhughes It is getting worse because all the staff is contributing to the behavior
2018-08-09 06:11:57 PM feleciap18 even with crafts she wants a snack or 2
2018-08-09 06:12:06 PM feleciap18 she has mild cognition
2018-08-09 06:12:13 PM jadams69 let her paint or have a coloring poster contest
2018-08-09 06:12:13 PM jenniferr2018 definitely the programs without food...it comes off cruel
2018-08-09 06:12:37 PM kathyhughes Residents learn really quick how to manipluate the staff and who they can really control
2018-08-09 06:12:46 PM amymc I agree
2018-08-09 06:12:49 PM feleciap18 yessss they do
2018-08-09 06:12:50 PM myriamr do small portions for her so that she think she is getting alot
2018-08-09 06:12:50 PM oliviabrokenshire yes i agree
2018-08-09 06:12:50 PM jadams69 yes mam they do
2018-08-09 06:12:53 PM melissaz Oh yes they do
2018-08-09 06:12:54 PM jenniferr2018 I agree they do
2018-08-09 06:12:55 PM sfaria Sure do!!!!
2018-08-09 06:12:56 PM amaliaagallas yup
2018-08-09 06:12:57 PM rickyd when having a food and drink activity we review the dietry plan the the Director of the kitchen provides us; plus, diets, weights, etc are usually covered during our IDT meetings.
2018-08-09 06:12:57 PM kathyhughes Plus staff reinforces the behavior
2018-08-09 06:12:58 PM lindsaypkrull I have noticed that they can be manipulative as well.
2018-08-09 06:12:59 PM oliviabrokenshire but we need to figure out why they are
2018-08-09 06:12:59 PM nclairsainvil yes, they do!
2018-08-09 06:13:02 PM mmierez you need phyic and a dietitiian to meet toghter with this prt
2018-08-09 06:13:04 PM jenniferr2018 yep
2018-08-09 06:13:24 PM feleciap18 mierez they have
2018-08-09 06:13:27 PM martyr58 Our lady just goes to the fridge and looks all day---at night she goes out of her room to take the stuff. She doesn't eat it so it is more of a OCD problem.
2018-08-09 06:13:29 PM jenniferr2018 definite team approach and working together ....
2018-08-09 06:13:29 PM sfaria They know eaxctly hoe to manipulate the new staff too
2018-08-09 06:13:30 PM kathyhughes Actually staff is the cause of most behaviors...but they don't see that
2018-08-09 06:13:34 PM nclairsainvil my computer is acting up
2018-08-09 06:13:46 PM myriamr Agree
2018-08-09 06:13:49 PM lisaad what is IDT?
2018-08-09 06:13:54 PM jenniferr2018 I agree with that too.
2018-08-09 06:13:57 PM sunshine2018 yes they do and they also they go find the nurses who will listen and give them their wish.
2018-08-09 06:13:58 PM oliviabrokenshire yes i agree kathy
2018-08-09 06:14:08 PM oliviabrokenshire the moods of staff plays a huge role in the residents
2018-08-09 06:14:09 PM sfaria So true again! They rush residents or ask quaestions that trigger a momory or an emotion
2018-08-09 06:14:12 PM nclairsainvil Interdispiplinary Team i think
2018-08-09 06:14:13 PM oliviabrokenshire they know when changes hapen
2018-08-09 06:14:15 PM jenniferr2018 some staff feel they are helping the resident out of their distress
2018-08-09 06:14:16 PM martyr58 diversion is the best with our girl because she loves to do things.
2018-08-09 06:14:18 PM feleciap18 i asked about a calorie count we dontdo that per dietary director
2018-08-09 06:14:19 PM melissaz We had to put a lock on the fridge in MC becuase two residents would go in and clean it out throughout the day. All the food that was in the fridge would end up in their apartment fridges.
2018-08-09 06:14:23 PM rickyd interdisciplinary team
2018-08-09 06:14:32 PM nclairsainvil disciplinary***
2018-08-09 06:14:48 PM mmierez what did they come up with and how they check to see can tell if it is work
2018-08-09 06:14:52 PM kathyhughes I would not have her come to food activities,,,if she shows up then she gets her food last
2018-08-09 06:14:52 PM myriamr IDT is the meeting where you get together with the nurses, social service, dietary, activities and discuss about residents, care etc
2018-08-09 06:14:59 PM feleciap18 when ibring itupthey seemtojust skipthe topic
2018-08-09 06:14:59 PM lisaad Ok thanks for the clarification!8-|
2018-08-09 06:15:07 PM jenniferr2018 we use to have a resident o fluid restrictions and staff would bring him up for happy hour..
2018-08-09 06:15:23 PM kathyhughes And even if she comes to crafts and wants food there isn't any
2018-08-09 06:15:29 PM amymc We give everyone a serving for food socials and then we take it out of the room so there are no seconds
2018-08-09 06:15:35 PM rickyd i was recently surprised to find out that ice cream also counts as a liquid intake, when and as they are tracking liquids per resident.
2018-08-09 06:15:38 PM kathyhughes LOL Jennifer...love it
2018-08-09 06:15:38 PM feleciap18 she is only 39 andwas therefor rehab but she has no progress inrehab
2018-08-09 06:15:56 PM sunshine2018 I also believe that she should not come to activites with food
2018-08-09 06:16:02 PM sfaria 39!! Definately a manipulator
2018-08-09 06:16:02 PM nclairsainvil i feel bad when serving food at an event and some residents can't have
2018-08-09 06:16:09 PM jenniferr2018 it was unbelievable...the staff new about the restricitons too
2018-08-09 06:16:12 PM lisaad In our facility residents don't really have access to refirifgerators or food -- they don't free feeed but we do have a snack cart that residents will frequent
2018-08-09 06:16:15 PM melissaz Oh wow!
2018-08-09 06:16:15 PM kathyhughes Right and she wants attention not food
2018-08-09 06:16:25 PM martyr58 Our fridge is locked all day-- night staff don't lock it....we only put so much out a day. Also- we eat popcorn as a group snack---that has cut the fridge trips out during the day for many.
2018-08-09 06:16:26 PM feleciap18 right
2018-08-09 06:16:27 PM lisaad Yes Kathy about the attention!
2018-08-09 06:16:31 PM sfaria We try to make sure we have something that everyone can have
2018-08-09 06:16:45 PM kathyhughes the staff has encourged this behavior and now they do not know what to do...
2018-08-09 06:16:47 PM feleciap18 right i have things foreveryone
2018-08-09 06:16:50 PM nclairsainvil One of our residents just sits on the floor when he needs attention
2018-08-09 06:16:51 PM lisaad Is that why we contrivbute to the behavior because when they act up we give them attention?
2018-08-09 06:17:02 PM feleciap18 she eats hersand begs for theirs
2018-08-09 06:17:09 PM lisaad If that's so then it works!
2018-08-09 06:17:33 PM amymc any fun activities in August?
2018-08-09 06:17:36 PM sunshine2018 we have several residents that have other diets besides regular so we have to prepare their diets.
2018-08-09 06:17:47 PM lisaad SOmetimes in the middle of an activity I will have to stop to addrtess someone who is talking or asking questions
2018-08-09 06:17:52 PM oliviabrokenshire i struggle because some could be at the end of their life and a dessert shouldn't be awful for them if they want to enjoy it
2018-08-09 06:17:53 PM kathyhughes No...what happens is that we reward inappropriate behavior by paying attention to them
2018-08-09 06:17:55 PM martyr58 a Hawaiian laua
2018-08-09 06:17:59 PM feleciap18 and when she istoomuch forthenurses and cnas they send her to activities solately thisis where she is at majority oftheday
2018-08-09 06:18:03 PM oliviabrokenshire a chicken bbq this saturday!
2018-08-09 06:18:06 PM jenniferr2018 we had one resident that would keep ordering hot dogs at the bbq and get sick because he had so many...and he would go to a different staff member to get him a hotdog...we had to assign one person to him to make sure he only ate soo mcuch to ..help it
2018-08-09 06:18:19 PM kathyhughes What we don't do is pay attention to them when they are having appropriate behavior
2018-08-09 06:18:24 PM amymc We are doing a fair week this week
2018-08-09 06:18:27 PM sfaria We actually don't have anything big planne din Aug, just cookouts
2018-08-09 06:18:31 PM myriamr we have ice cream sandwich day, smoores day, book lover day, light houses craft, painted rocks
2018-08-09 06:18:40 PM lisaad AHHH I see what you're saying
2018-08-09 06:18:49 PM jenniferr2018 squeek wheels get the oil...one would say
2018-08-09 06:18:49 PM rickyd YES KATHY.... YES. YES. YES. How can we as Activities Directors get through to many of the staff that It's often how we treat, react, and often ignor resident that feed or cause a resident to act the way they do.
2018-08-09 06:18:50 PM amymc What kind of activities do you do for mens group
2018-08-09 06:19:05 PM sunshine2018 we are making the game the price is right. some of our aids draws very well and have been making all the posters and we order a spinning wheel our residents watch the price is right every day..
2018-08-09 06:19:08 PM kathyhughes Well Felecia I believe we are onto another topic...so I hope that we helped

2018-08-09 06:20:06 PM melissaz Last month we took the Vet's Group, which happens to be all men to an antique airplane museum. That was pretty awesome.
2018-08-09 06:20:09 PM feleciap18 i was thinking of a cookout to end summer
2018-08-09 06:20:16 PM jadams69 big tv football, nascar, snacks, fake beer or real beer...
2018-08-09 06:20:17 PM jenniferr2018 yep..cripple creek for the day
