2014-01-21 07:27:46 PM amanda33 is finial hard
2014-01-21 07:27:46 PM paulette I like the betting board idea. What do you think of the idea of the residents being on different "teams" and, depending on who has the ball, that team gets to do something...maybe get massages from the others? What could they take turns with?
2014-01-21 07:27:55 PM alicee we had pep rally every friday while collage football was playing
2014-01-21 07:28:07 PM annm211 what did you do at the pep rally?
2014-01-21 07:28:16 PM paulette I was going to ask the same thing
2014-01-21 07:28:25 PM kathyhughes http://www.ehow.com/how_5128516_make-football-betting-board.html
2014-01-21 07:28:26 PM annm211 I am planning super bowl parties, but have asked the staff to come up with ideas...
2014-01-21 07:28:29 PM 131570 Kathy, if no grade is posted for the Practicum, does that just mean it hasn't been put in yet?....or maybe that my fax didn't go through?
2014-01-21 07:28:32 PM janice13 that is fun we use our pom poms to cheer during football games
2014-01-21 07:28:34 PM joytuyh left the chat room

2014-01-21 07:29:17 PM kathyhughes It would mean that I haven't looked at all the assignments posted and that I will get the grades done when I find all the postings
2014-01-21 07:29:31 PM paulette For facilities that have more than one TV, did you know there is a Puppy Superbowl on every year at the same time asthe Superbowl? It's tiny puppies carrying toys around on a tiny football field, being cute.
2014-01-21 07:29:39 PM annm211 I have been doing all th planning & am pushing it onto them to get their creative juices flowing...
2014-01-21 07:29:43 PM janice13 and a cat on
2014-01-21 07:29:57 PM janice13 one
2014-01-21 07:30:01 PM caronda awwwwww how cute!!!
2014-01-21 07:30:03 PM leland54 The kitty hafttime show
2014-01-21 07:30:08 PM kshirer what channel for puppy bowl
2014-01-21 07:30:08 PM 131570 oh ok. Got it. Thanks. Our fax machine is kind of wacky so I just like to make sure
2014-01-21 07:30:09 PM janice13 yes
2014-01-21 07:30:11 PM caronda I like puppies
2014-01-21 07:30:16 PM sbond108 That sounds so fun
2014-01-21 07:30:20 PM annm211 cute
2014-01-21 07:30:22 PM leland54 It's a good event
2014-01-21 07:30:25 PM kathyhughes I will let you know if it is missing
2014-01-21 07:30:29 PM janice13 me too so do the residents
2014-01-21 07:30:34 PM pawood does anyone have policies in place for dementia programming???
2014-01-21 07:30:46 PM kathyhughes such as Pam?
2014-01-21 07:30:48 PM janice13 what kind of policies
2014-01-21 07:30:49 PM kshirer not that i know of
2014-01-21 07:31:05 PM annm211 state mandates?
2014-01-21 07:31:10 PM paulette Not sure about the channel...we use the guide and find it...try one of the ESPN alternate channels or an animal programming based channel
2014-01-21 07:31:12 PM kathyhughes for what type of activities or activities that you do?
2014-01-21 07:31:13 PM kshirer whats pam?
2014-01-21 07:31:24 PM janice13 we are required to meet the needs of all the residents
2014-01-21 07:31:31 PM pawood i was asked if i had policies in place I am not sure exactly I have been searching the web and looking for answers
2014-01-21 07:32:00 PM janice13 we have programs that work better for them then others and we focus on where they are not where everyone is, they are all so different
2014-01-21 07:32:04 PM kathyhughes Oh...well I had one policy statement and a whole bunch of procedures
2014-01-21 07:32:10 PM pawood i have sensory programs exercise and different small groups and 1;1 programs
2014-01-21 07:32:11 PM caronda Some policies differ from facility to facility and state as well
2014-01-21 07:32:31 PM kathyhughes and I used the planning sheets that we use during the course for the procedures
2014-01-21 07:32:39 PM janice13 yes they do, set your goals high so even if the state says on thing you are already doing all that you can
2014-01-21 07:32:40 PM heathereubanks we do sensory activities as a lot of one on ones for our dementia residents
2014-01-21 07:32:54 PM amanda33 ohbgood idea
2014-01-21 07:33:10 PM jackieo enter the chat room
2014-01-21 07:33:18 PM jackieo hi everyone
2014-01-21 07:33:21 PM annm211 hi
2014-01-21 07:33:21 PM janice13 hello
2014-01-21 07:33:24 PM caronda we do 1:1 and we use our activity to go bag with those residents
2014-01-21 07:33:25 PM leland54 hey
2014-01-21 07:33:27 PM kathyhughes And be careful with the P&P as you can get a deficiency for not following your policy
2014-01-21 07:33:30 PM caronda hey
2014-01-21 07:33:42 PM sbond108 Right! That happened in my first building
2014-01-21 07:33:53 PM janice13 yes, true but if you follow that and go even farther then you are good to go
2014-01-21 07:33:55 PM kathyhughes So be as global as you can
2014-01-21 07:34:02 PM annm211 have to go do mock survey with a sister facility tomorrow..should be interesting
2014-01-21 07:34:18 PM kathyhughes like never write that you will do exercise 5x a week
2014-01-21 07:34:21 PM annm211 left the chat room
2014-01-21 07:34:23 PM janice13 we recently got CARRF re-certified
2014-01-21 07:34:28 PM pawood never do that
2014-01-21 07:34:29 PM lizkanderson I think a mock survey would be a nice idea. Have you done it before?
2014-01-21 07:34:37 PM sbond108 Right , you have to be a realist
2014-01-21 07:34:39 PM pawood they are fun
2014-01-21 07:34:49 PM paulette Totally irrelevant, but something happened today at my facility that I want to share with you: When I walked in, I noticed that a resident was using the internet to search for answers to a medical question. She had no idea how to distinguish between opinions by a lay-person or rules given by a doctor. If I hadn't happened to be there, she might have tried somethng not so great. EVen after I tried explaining, it was hard for her to understand. I think all places need to have a talk with their residents to get them to realize that not everything they see on the internet is necessarily true.
2014-01-21 07:34:50 PM tloocke1 why not write exercise 5 times a week?
2014-01-21 07:34:51 PM caronda real and optimistic
2014-01-21 07:34:54 PM pawood we call them peer reviews
2014-01-21 07:35:00 PM janice13 Kathy we do exercise 5 days a week, only because we have a fitness directtor
2014-01-21 07:35:03 PM janice13 director
2014-01-21 07:35:25 PM leland54 why not exercise 5x a week?
2014-01-21 07:35:30 PM kshirer i try to exercise everyday but it doesnt always happen
2014-01-21 07:35:32 PM kathyhughes because if you have a week where you only do it 4x then the survey team can give you a deficiency
2014-01-21 07:35:36 PM annm211 enter the chat room
2014-01-21 07:35:37 PM 131570 The idea is just don't write a goal you can't always own up to i think
2014-01-21 07:35:41 PM kathyhughes for not following your policy
2014-01-21 07:35:44 PM tloocke1 oh
2014-01-21 07:35:45 PM jackie3 dont tie yourself to a specific number
2014-01-21 07:35:50 PM kathyhughes right
2014-01-21 07:35:52 PM kc13 we do it 3 times a week and i think on the weekend my counterpart does it
2014-01-21 07:35:57 PM jackie3 just say weekly
2014-01-21 07:36:00 PM kathyhughes you think
2014-01-21 07:36:01 PM leland54 make sense
2014-01-21 07:36:12 PM tloocke1 the company wants us to do it everyday
2014-01-21 07:36:13 PM janice13 we only document for the ones who go to the program the others say not interested or refused
2014-01-21 07:36:15 PM annm211 no
2014-01-21 07:36:19 PM annm211 no
2014-01-21 07:36:22 PM pawood some i just state monthly even though they do weekly
2014-01-21 07:36:24 PM annm211 no
2014-01-21 07:36:40 PM caronda you mean on the care plan
2014-01-21 07:36:43 PM kathyhughes I wouldn't state a number of times
2014-01-21 07:36:50 PM tloocke1 ok
2014-01-21 07:36:52 PM sbond108 make you document that they refuse too - we had an issue with that with a family member and the state
2014-01-21 07:36:57 PM lizkanderson We do a totally different calendar of event with funtioanlly appropriate activities for our memory care residents, but nothing in writing about what specifically we will do. Is that a problem waiting to happen?
2014-01-21 07:37:03 PM amanda33 good idea
2014-01-21 07:37:31 PM kathyhughes for example.....if you say that you have cooking class 1x a week and then you have residents who don't want to cook you are not keeping your policy
2014-01-21 07:37:34 PM tloocke1 we have a sheet we fill out on what programs are done and who attended them
2014-01-21 07:37:37 PM 131570 So if you just state that you will have a exercise program in place that is a sufficient statement so long as you do it at least once a week. If you do it more, great
2014-01-21 07:37:45 PM janice13 we write notes as well that we keep in a book outside of state documentation for the families
2014-01-21 07:37:55 PM kathyhughes as for the care plan never state that a resident will attend x# of activities a week
2014-01-21 07:38:11 PM paulette But if you have that cooking class once a week and even one resident comes, you ARE keeping it?
2014-01-21 07:38:12 PM kc13 ok
2014-01-21 07:38:16 PM heatherleex3 left the chat room
2014-01-21 07:38:20 PM janice13 you can set a goal that they will attend as they want to
2014-01-21 07:38:21 PM leland54 what would you say Kathy?
2014-01-21 07:38:21 PM kathyhughes You just write a procedure for the program
2014-01-21 07:38:24 PM caronda but you are showing that you tried is it your fault they dont want to cook
2014-01-21 07:38:33 PM tloocke1 you can never tell how many activities one will particiapte in... they refuse sometimes
2014-01-21 07:38:34 PM kathyhughes depends on the resident Leland
2014-01-21 07:38:48 PM kshirer our care plans are predesinged by coorporate with # x week
2014-01-21 07:39:08 PM 131570 So are ours kshirer
2014-01-21 07:39:09 PM janice13 when they continue to refuse revisit what they are doing, reading change the paper work to match
2014-01-21 07:39:11 PM jackie3 i always add that we will respect their right to refuse activities
2014-01-21 07:39:12 PM sbond108 Gensis is trying to get away from that as well as saying they will attend for x amount of minutes
2014-01-21 07:39:15 PM caronda Re: care plans that phrase is up and down most of the casre plans that I have seen
2014-01-21 07:39:26 PM pawood we write our own care plans out
2014-01-21 07:39:34 PM annm211 so if I wrote it that specific and changed it later to be more global, is that acceptable?
2014-01-21 07:39:35 PM kathyhughes I saw a deficieny that the surveyor figured out that according to the care plan the resident would have attended 20+ hours of activities a week
2014-01-21 07:39:46 PM janice13 wow that is bad
2014-01-21 07:39:55 PM leland54 wow
2014-01-21 07:40:01 PM janice13 we have a few who are not far from that
2014-01-21 07:40:03 PM kathyhughes It depends on the resident
2014-01-21 07:40:04 PM 131570 That's like a part time job lol
2014-01-21 07:40:07 PM janice13 yes it does
2014-01-21 07:40:19 PM caronda Yea I do to jackie13. and wee will continue to encourae and support involvment
2014-01-21 07:40:21 PM kathyhughes think about what the resident wants to do...based on the assessment
2014-01-21 07:40:42 PM kathyhughes so if Rose likes to knit how are you going to get Rose to knit?
2014-01-21 07:40:54 PM janice13 do you do care plans with the residents or with the team only we have the residents help with them it is resident choice
2014-01-21 07:40:57 PM annm211 that I have done & the care plans r making sense to me because they are measurable.. but attainable
2014-01-21 07:40:58 PM kathyhughes what adaptations are you going to use to help her knit
2014-01-21 07:41:05 PM leland54 so you can't MAKE a resident do something right unless they are interested?
2014-01-21 07:41:09 PM paulette Show her patterns from a knitting magazine?
2014-01-21 07:41:10 PM pawood i think the hardest part is getting the staff to document properly if resident attended or refused or out at doctors apt
2014-01-21 07:41:12 PM kathyhughes right
2014-01-21 07:41:13 PM caronda 20 hours a week is a lot of resdients that barely want to get out of bed sometimes
2014-01-21 07:41:27 PM kshirer we have independent activities like knitting or cross stich
2014-01-21 07:41:28 PM janice13 needles with large handles if needed, the yarn someone to teach and work with her
2014-01-21 07:41:33 PM jackie3 magazines...crafts with assistance....dvds..
2014-01-21 07:41:35 PM paulette needles with thick handles
2014-01-21 07:41:37 PM 131570 Provide the correct materials and adaptations as well as encouragement and motivation
2014-01-21 07:41:48 PM leland54 so start off slowly but still relating to what they are interested
2014-01-21 07:41:49 PM annm211 yup
2014-01-21 07:41:51 PM janice13 we have a knitting club they love to help out
2014-01-21 07:41:54 PM annm211 for a 1:1
2014-01-21 07:41:54 PM kathyhughes If you think about it ....you would have to have 100+ hours of activities a week when you place times on them
2014-01-21 07:42:13 PM heatherleex3 enter the chat room
2014-01-21 07:42:14 PM kathyhughes You are all right
2014-01-21 07:42:19 PM annm211 feels like it now..lol
2014-01-21 07:42:19 PM paulette Good idea, janice...being with a group who all does the same thing is great encouragement
2014-01-21 07:42:22 PM leland54 woot whiskey on the house!!!
2014-01-21 07:42:30 PM janice13 too much whiskey
2014-01-21 07:42:41 PM caronda knitting and or chroceting classes
2014-01-21 07:42:43 PM leland54 VICTORY SIPS!!
2014-01-21 07:42:44 PM sbond108 haha - too much Leland
2014-01-21 07:42:54 PM paulette Did I miss something? How did we get to talking about whiskey?
2014-01-21 07:42:57 PM kc13 lol
2014-01-21 07:42:58 PM paulette :)
2014-01-21 07:43:00 PM jackie3 what if on the cp we give a general of 1-3 x weekly as they choose
2014-01-21 07:43:08 PM annm211 but don't some of these cookbooks have people writing goals this way?
2014-01-21 07:43:10 PM kathyhughes So if Bob likes crossword puzzles what would you do for that resident
2014-01-21 07:43:17 PM tloocke1 we like to take a group to sit and knit with, for some of the residents who are low functioning just like to roll up the yarn
2014-01-21 07:43:17 PM janice13 I have found that if a resident tries to knit and cant we get them to help roll up the yarn for the rest, it keeps them with the group and social
2014-01-21 07:43:18 PM joytuyh left the chat room
2014-01-21 07:43:20 PM pawood use at their discretion
2014-01-21 07:43:23 PM paulette large-letter crosswords
2014-01-21 07:43:25 PM kathyhughes and don't put any times on the care plan
2014-01-21 07:43:33 PM leland54 1:1 with crosswords large print
2014-01-21 07:43:37 PM paulette and crosswords with themes he's interested in
2014-01-21 07:43:39 PM kc13 :)
2014-01-21 07:43:42 PM kathyhughes right
2014-01-21 07:43:42 PM heatherleex3 i agree janice
2014-01-21 07:43:44 PM caronda print out big print crosswords
2014-01-21 07:43:45 PM kshirer provide him with crossword puzzles and good lighting to work them
2014-01-21 07:43:46 PM janice13 find out if he needed large print and get the book pencils and others who would enjoy
2014-01-21 07:43:52 PM jackie3 print crosswords.....we never put times
2014-01-21 07:44:10 PM annm211 provide the crosswords...what else does he need, dictionary, etc.
2014-01-21 07:44:26 PM kathyhughes What the resident wants to do...so if Roy likes old movies what would you do for him?
2014-01-21 07:44:29 PM 131570 If his vision is poor print large crosswords, one at a time maybe if he needs to ease back into doing them, or a crossword book if he is already a finatic
2014-01-21 07:44:30 PM joytuyh enter the chat room
2014-01-21 07:44:34 PM caronda and a couple of pencils and or pens
2014-01-21 07:44:47 PM kathyhughes and keep the pencils sharpened
2014-01-21 07:44:49 PM kshirer maybe rent him some of his favorites
2014-01-21 07:44:52 PM tloocke1 we have a jumbo crossword that we put on our white board to do with all of the residents, there are a number of them that like that, but individually I have crosswords printed out and circle words and color pictures for residents to do together in our craft room
2014-01-21 07:44:53 PM janice13 provide the old but goody movies, rent or ask the family to provide
2014-01-21 07:44:54 PM sbond108 Set him up with a DVD player and get netflix!
2014-01-21 07:45:06 PM alicee what can i do for a mason worker 72 yrs. old one arm

2014-01-21 07:45:20 PM annm211 provide the movies of his choosing w/player, invite to movie day/night, etc.
2014-01-21 07:45:25 PM leland54 or into an old movie
2014-01-21 07:45:26 PM paulette Find out the TYPE of old movie he likes...westerns, romance, war movies, or what stars he likes....try to get a mix of movies he's seen and liked and those he has not seen...invite him and others to view at the same time for social effect
2014-01-21 07:45:28 PM kathyhughes what does he like to do Alice?
2014-01-21 07:45:38 PM caronda we have wifi but somehow I cant get netflix you think maybe its because the tv is ancient
2014-01-21 07:45:42 PM jackie3 schedule a movie time on the calender too
2014-01-21 07:45:47 PM sbond108 Hey guys I have to go! I'm actually at work right now becaue of the snow! They need me on the wing :) good night!
2014-01-21 07:45:48 PM janice13 talk about other interest he has first, then ove from there
2014-01-21 07:45:50 PM tloocke1 we have a number of old movies and we let the residents pick which movie to watch
2014-01-21 07:45:52 PM sbond108 left the chat room

2014-01-21 07:46:15 PM alicee listen to music and tell jokes
2014-01-21 07:46:19 PM kathyhughes You have to find out what the resident has interest in and then I can help
