2017-02-09 07:07:02 PM tvs320 All staff should know of these procedures not just activities
2017-02-09 07:07:21 PM kathyhughes And a policy can be as easy as stating that the activities program will meet the individual needs and interests of the residents
2017-02-09 07:07:22 PM tammymb yes,,tvs320!
2017-02-09 07:07:24 PM hopec78 hello all

2017-02-09 07:08:08 PM kathyhughes Procedures can be the planning tools that we did in MEPAP1
2017-02-09 07:08:10 PM nursesusie The way it inservice your staff is in written form and also give inservice during the monthly meeting.
2017-02-09 07:08:30 PM katierdale we have "standards" at Brookdale, and as I'm in AL I don't have a ton of policies/procedures
2017-02-09 07:08:31 PM 11616499 I have been trying to constantly improve training new staff. it is extremly difficult.
2017-02-09 07:08:38 PM kathyhughes I was never too specific
2017-02-09 07:08:38 PM tammymb I have to write one for our new Snozelyn room
2017-02-09 07:08:51 PM katierdale what's a Snozelyn room?
2017-02-09 07:08:59 PM kathyhughes Who can use the room Tammy?
2017-02-09 07:09:01 PM bernlewis We would distribute the policies and have staff sign off on them then place in their files becase it was hard to get everyone together and would review them periodically during staff meetings.
2017-02-09 07:09:04 PM 11616499 pet policys, volunteer policys,
2017-02-09 07:09:12 PM kathyhughes Why are they using the room?
2017-02-09 07:09:21 PM tvs320 Our company just hired a women that is in charge of writing policies and procedures. I should meet with her
2017-02-09 07:09:48 PM tammymb our locked memory unit is going to and we have residents whom have anxiety issues
2017-02-09 07:09:55 PM mark26 i think all policies and procedures for a facility is in the handbook
2017-02-09 07:10:14 PM mark26 which every facility have their own handbook
2017-02-09 07:10:15 PM marissavega1274 think new people think its so easy then after a few months they see it can be fun but hard.. i feel like that needs to be in the policies and procedures.
2017-02-09 07:10:33 PM marissavega1274 lots of running
2017-02-09 07:10:36 PM megansnider wow
2017-02-09 07:10:44 PM kathyhughes And in the job descriptions
2017-02-09 07:10:48 PM marissavega1274 yes
2017-02-09 07:10:51 PM katierdale Do some companies required CNA training for their Activity Directors?
2017-02-09 07:11:04 PM bernlewis Does anyone know why marissavega1274 is printing symbols?
2017-02-09 07:11:08 PM kathyhughes I actually prefer the new stuff that they are doing for Dementia units
2017-02-09 07:11:10 PM marissavega1274 mine doesnt but i am one
2017-02-09 07:11:15 PM megansnider yes - to cna training
2017-02-09 07:11:19 PM nursesusie We receive our job description upon being hired.
2017-02-09 07:11:21 PM 11616499 employee manual is different in an event of policys and procedures from chemicals, disasters, gun man, sickness etc.
2017-02-09 07:11:24 PM tvs320 no
2017-02-09 07:11:27 PM pamgoodwin Mine doesn not require CNA's. We have one activity assistant that is a CNA tho
2017-02-09 07:11:30 PM kathyhughes I don't know why she would have to call the office
2017-02-09 07:11:31 PM jillm what new stuff in dementia units?
2017-02-09 07:11:41 PM kathyhughes they take care of the tech issues
2017-02-09 07:11:47 PM tammymb I do to Kathy, it was proposed by corporate for us to have one
2017-02-09 07:11:48 PM kathyhughes I call them regularly
2017-02-09 07:12:05 PM sueg I would find that useful to have CNA training. I have none
2017-02-09 07:12:09 PM marissavega1274 left the chat room

2017-02-09 07:12:28 PM gailh 2 of my aides have CNA and i used to be one years ago
2017-02-09 07:12:35 PM kathyhughes https://www.pinterest.com/nccap/dementia-environments/
2017-02-09 07:12:40 PM tammymb what are some of the new ways being offerered for Dementia?
2017-02-09 07:12:41 PM megansnider oh yea agree
2017-02-09 07:12:42 PM tvs320 I dont want to be cna certified because they would pull me off activities to cna
2017-02-09 07:12:43 PM katierdale I think it would be useful but overboard. I just would like to be certified to know what to do when someone falls or how to transfer.
2017-02-09 07:12:52 PM 11616499 I also have my cna. i cant imagine not having it. especially during outings. if it wasnt for my cna i think my residents would have a hard time making it to group activitys.
2017-02-09 07:12:57 PM pamgoodwin It is when we are having a party and some one needs thickened drink or needs to be fed..
2017-02-09 07:13:01 PM nursesusie We are planning to have a class on how to present activities to the dementia resident.
2017-02-09 07:13:02 PM kathyhughes There is a current board on NCCAP that has all the new info
2017-02-09 07:13:05 PM megansnider thtis a risk we find too! - the pulld off to do cna
2017-02-09 07:13:11 PM britsharie enter the chat room
2017-02-09 07:13:19 PM britsharie hi everybody!
2017-02-09 07:13:22 PM bestkat4u enter the chat room
2017-02-09 07:13:44 PM mark26 its much better if your aides have a cna background
2017-02-09 07:13:48 PM bestkat4u good evening all
2017-02-09 07:13:49 PM katierdale I would say they hired me for activities, and they are going to get activities
2017-02-09 07:13:54 PM megansnider haha
2017-02-09 07:13:56 PM mark26 coz its easier to work with the residents
2017-02-09 07:14:01 PM katierdale hi kathy best
2017-02-09 07:14:03 PM kathyhughes I had one coworker who was a CNA
2017-02-09 07:14:07 PM kathyhughes I was not
2017-02-09 07:14:22 PM jillm I will definitely check that out! Thanks, Kathy!
2017-02-09 07:14:27 PM tvs320 I have two that are cna's and its a secret.
2017-02-09 07:14:28 PM gailh If you have good communication with the aides and nurses it works out well. They like to see the residents enjoy themselves so...
2017-02-09 07:14:32 PM pamgoodwin It does help having a CNA at times--on outings its good also
2017-02-09 07:14:36 PM katierdale lol tvs
2017-02-09 07:14:39 PM tammymb My cowaorker is also a CNA and it is really helpful on trips
2017-02-09 07:14:41 PM kathyhughes There are lots of ideas for a Dementia Unit
2017-02-09 07:14:43 PM megansnider we are going into househld model and all will have cna soon
2017-02-09 07:14:43 PM tvs320 I keep them on the schedule to aide on outings
2017-02-09 07:15:01 PM mlmusic I used to be a CNA, and I don't know how many times the aides try to get me to do stuff that I'm no longer allowed to do. I have to keep telling them I'm no longer certified!
2017-02-09 07:15:11 PM 11616499 so many different kinds of dementia in every resident. this is where i care plan very well on point click care.
2017-02-09 07:15:30 PM katierdale oh so you have to be continuously certified ...makes sense
2017-02-09 07:15:33 PM tvs320 I am becoming certified in music and memory therapy
2017-02-09 07:15:40 PM bernlewis In our adult program it was always a challenge because we all were doing aid tasks as well as activity programing
2017-02-09 07:15:41 PM megansnider ohh that is cool!
2017-02-09 07:15:43 PM pamgoodwin That is one of the draw backs mlmusic--they think they can stop their activities and toilet someone!!!
2017-02-09 07:15:51 PM megansnider where do you get that music and memory certification
2017-02-09 07:15:51 PM tammymb my coworker is constantly being pulled to help the other CNAs
2017-02-09 07:16:03 PM haliea same here tammy
2017-02-09 07:16:05 PM nursesusie What type of activity seems to keep the dementia resident active?
2017-02-09 07:16:14 PM mlmusic Yes! Mainly toileting! And I would love to help, but I have other duties now.
2017-02-09 07:16:15 PM katierdale isn't that like what the homes do? what are they called again? (we learned about them in MEPAP1)
2017-02-09 07:16:16 PM tvs320 It will count for points for ce credits and it is a great thing.... Music
2017-02-09 07:16:19 PM bestkat4u i have that problem too
2017-02-09 07:16:22 PM haliea oh mine love to color and do puzzles or fold clothes
2017-02-09 07:16:27 PM gailh Mine love music nursesusie
2017-02-09 07:16:28 PM tammymb music therapy is the best
2017-02-09 07:16:30 PM kathyhughes I am an OT and they tried to get me to do that as well and I would ask for the OT salary and they would then have to find an Activity Director
2017-02-09 07:16:30 PM bernlewis It depends on the individual with dementia.
2017-02-09 07:16:36 PM hopec78 I am currently Music and memory certified. I just cant find reliable volunteers to help.
2017-02-09 07:16:44 PM mlmusic LOL
2017-02-09 07:16:45 PM kathyhughes Never asked after that
2017-02-09 07:16:52 PM hopec78 Between me and my assistant it gets hard.
2017-02-09 07:16:52 PM sueg ha
2017-02-09 07:16:53 PM tvs320 There you go Kathy!!!
2017-02-09 07:16:55 PM pamgoodwin Ha Ha Kathy
2017-02-09 07:17:00 PM gailh :D
2017-02-09 07:17:03 PM mark26 hehe
2017-02-09 07:17:11 PM megansnider ha
2017-02-09 07:17:23 PM 11616499 there is always a need for cna in a home, unless its an emergency short staff I will gladly help out. But a decent care center should not pull an activity staff regardless of cna because if you dont follow the activity's on your calendar you can for sure get cited for it if state showed up.
2017-02-09 07:17:27 PM tvs320 Speaking of pay... We should get paid more! Just saying
2017-02-09 07:17:34 PM marissavega1274 true
2017-02-09 07:17:36 PM kathyhughes Volunteers need to go through an educational session to do music with the residents
2017-02-09 07:17:46 PM bernlewis I'm with you tvs320
2017-02-09 07:17:48 PM megansnider ya
2017-02-09 07:17:52 PM tvs320 ok good to know.
2017-02-09 07:18:25 PM kathyhughes Look for some Home Schoolers who are interested in Music
2017-02-09 07:18:39 PM bernlewis Our voluneers were trained just like a regular staff person minus the aid duties
2017-02-09 07:18:42 PM kathyhughes Also contact your local Music Teachers
2017-02-09 07:18:43 PM hopec78 They all have I have been working with our local high school HOSA group. just not having luck with the children or teachers show up
2017-02-09 07:18:44 PM mark26 try to ask some schools
2017-02-09 07:18:58 PM nursesusie what do you do when re-direction does not work with the dementia resident?
2017-02-09 07:19:05 PM mark26 students can volunteer for music
2017-02-09 07:19:06 PM tammymb we have had some home schoolers come to perform a piano recital
2017-02-09 07:19:11 PM bernlewis college students in ot programs work well too
2017-02-09 07:19:19 PM tvs320 Oh I have a question... A mother with a handicapped child wants her son to volunteer... However I think its more of a volunteer issue for our residents to help him. How should I present to my residents
2017-02-09 07:19:23 PM kathyhughes Engage the resident in conversation about themselves
2017-02-09 07:19:26 PM gailh nursesusie... have someone else approach them
2017-02-09 07:19:45 PM nursesusie ok.
2017-02-09 07:20:03 PM gailh or walk away and go back
2017-02-09 07:20:03 PM kathyhughes Get a couple of residents together who had kids and see if they want to help
2017-02-09 07:20:14 PM pamgoodwin I have so many things I want to do when I become the director...I write so many notes on all these awesome idea's--just can't implement them yet. :(
2017-02-09 07:20:23 PM kathyhughes I would also look for another person to talk to the resident
2017-02-09 07:20:38 PM nursesusie anyone planned a valentine party?
2017-02-09 07:20:39 PM gailh left the chat room
2017-02-09 07:20:42 PM bernlewis We had a high schooler with down syndrome volunteer with our adults and I started having discussions about inclusion during our coffee hour to feel out our adults and get them talking about what its like to be different.
2017-02-09 07:21:08 PM bestkat4u not a party valentine potato bake
2017-02-09 07:21:17 PM kathyhughes Valentine Parties...ideas?
2017-02-09 07:21:33 PM 11616499 I agree pamgoodwin. there have been many many times aides get crabby when i tell them a resident needs there help, and have had comments like well you do it. I then tell them that i help when i can, but you are the aide this is in your description. I dont mind helping out the residents in my down time. I feel bad making them wait.
2017-02-09 07:21:34 PM bestkat4u and elvis entertainer to visit as well that dy
2017-02-09 07:21:35 PM pamgoodwin We have a party planned--not sure of the food yet tho, any idea's
2017-02-09 07:21:35 PM megansnider oh we have the best valentines decor of sweet notes from a local preschool we partnr wth
2017-02-09 07:21:36 PM haliea We are having a little dance
2017-02-09 07:21:42 PM tammymb our valentine party is going to be the crowning of the king and queen the last years' winners are crowning the winners
2017-02-09 07:21:48 PM nursesusie We plan to crown the king& Queen. The resident really look forward to this.
2017-02-09 07:21:54 PM sueg yes, chocolate fountain, a couple play music and singing
2017-02-09 07:21:55 PM marissavega1274 cherry soda floats with ice cream
2017-02-09 07:22:05 PM megansnider that is cute!
2017-02-09 07:22:23 PM nursesusie Cherrysoda floats sound great.
2017-02-09 07:22:29 PM pamgoodwin whoo---cherry soda floats with ice cream--I'll take one of those right now Marissa
2017-02-09 07:22:38 PM katierdale we had a dance. I left out crowning king and queen. but we had a live entertainer and decorations and door prizes and 2 of my scooter residents danced together in their scooters!!
2017-02-09 07:22:38 PM marissavega1274 then we go room to room for the rehab
2017-02-09 07:22:41 PM bestkat4u yes i lke the soda floats

2017-02-09 07:22:47 PM pamgoodwin I like the king and queen idea
2017-02-09 07:22:53 PM tvs320 We are having a Valentine Vow Renewal.. I am very excited!!! We are going to have news coverage and everything. The only thing is my oldest couple of 68 years married... the wife is really sick... I hope she doesnt die before
2017-02-09 07:23:05 PM katierdale oh wow tvs
2017-02-09 07:23:14 PM bestkat4u nice tv
2017-02-09 07:23:15 PM bernlewis I have a family member in long term care and many of them operate with minimal staff, just meet state guidelines and it gets hard for the aids, but theres no room for attitude
2017-02-09 07:23:15 PM sueg wow
2017-02-09 07:23:21 PM kathyhughes I am sure she will be fine
2017-02-09 07:23:22 PM mlmusic That's great, tvs
2017-02-09 07:23:23 PM mark26 i made a photo/kiss booth for the residents
2017-02-09 07:23:29 PM marissavega1274 cute
2017-02-09 07:23:31 PM mark26 and for the emplyees also
2017-02-09 07:23:32 PM pamgoodwin tvs320--that is amazing, hope all goes well
2017-02-09 07:23:46 PM katierdale can you all ask outsiders for door prizes like other companies?
2017-02-09 07:23:51 PM britsharie photo booth is such a good idea
2017-02-09 07:23:57 PM bestkat4u nice mark
2017-02-09 07:23:59 PM nursesusie We had a resident who turned 100 years old in Jan. She doesnot look a day over 89.
2017-02-09 07:24:08 PM haliea we have people who just donate stuff all the time
2017-02-09 07:24:08 PM britsharie i bought one of those new polaroid cameras for my patients! They love it!
2017-02-09 07:24:09 PM kathyhughes Yes but be specific with your request
2017-02-09 07:24:20 PM katierdale that's a great idea brit
2017-02-09 07:24:23 PM mark26 thanks
2017-02-09 07:24:34 PM katierdale like have it in writing and all?
2017-02-09 07:24:34 PM tammymb my oldest resident is 104 and she loves to dance in her wheelchair!
2017-02-09 07:24:41 PM megansnider wow!
2017-02-09 07:24:44 PM tvs320 I will bring pics for you!! I cant wait... we have worked for months on this project
2017-02-09 07:25:05 PM mlmusic I'm currently looking into doing things with snapchat and the residents
2017-02-09 07:25:22 PM katierdale has anyone used a strobe light before? just curious...I have one in storage and have never used it for fear of someone having a seizure
2017-02-09 07:25:25 PM mark26 you be carefull about taking pics
2017-02-09 07:25:31 PM mark26 HIPAA
2017-02-09 07:25:42 PM bernlewis I think its wonderful when you can get residents to consider an alternative way to enjoy some things they used to do independently like dancing. It opens the door for them to try other things for fulfillment
2017-02-09 07:25:48 PM kathyhughes Yes make sure that when you ask for Bingo Prizes that you are specific with what you need
2017-02-09 07:25:53 PM megansnider oh gosh we have so many rules against social media and folks
2017-02-09 07:26:06 PM 11616499 I actually just had music thereapy today when our music group didnt show up. we had a sing a long. It is so amazing to watch a resident who doesnt talk or interact in conversation burst out singing. I was smiling ear to ear.
