2017-07-20 05:58:41 PM kbertocci I am a skilled facility attached with a personal care home, so I have implemeted several new additions to the PC calendar -- cocktail hours, "lets make sangria", gardening, wine & pizza party, and I contacted the American legion for a few veterans socials a month (to send a representative).
2017-07-20 05:58:42 PM juliannag hello

2017-07-20 06:00:20 PM kbertocci I contacted the local school district. They have wheelchair buses for students with disabilities. I would check into that
2017-07-20 06:00:26 PM juliannag ohh sounds fun
2017-07-20 06:00:29 PM kaneika22 We are planning a laundry Party for unlabeled clothings for august

2017-07-20 06:01:31 PM kbertocci We have an "auction" every month with donated items from the community. Individuals receive 10 $1 bingo bucks and are able to bid on items that they want. The staff walk around and personally show each item to the residents. They love it

2017-07-20 06:02:22 PM kathyhughes We would have all the lost laundry out once a month for bargain shopping!
2017-07-20 06:02:23 PM melissajdikken didnt do much for the 4th.....
2017-07-20 06:02:28 PM juliannag What a neat idea!!
2017-07-20 06:02:47 PM lisasittniewski lol....that's such a good idea! instead of letting it sit in a room collecting dust!
2017-07-20 06:03:02 PM johnl I like that lost laundery idea, we could use some of that!
2017-07-20 06:03:15 PM kathyhughes they enjoyed looking through them
2017-07-20 06:03:20 PM mzonneville Oh we a garden together last year we did a christmas one, this year we will be putting a fairy garden in a wicker chair

2017-07-20 06:03:42 PM kathyhughes Fairy gardens are great to make
2017-07-20 06:03:42 PM kaneika22 Bargain Shopping sounds fun...do the residents do it
2017-07-20 06:03:43 PM johnl Heck, I could use some of the clothing as Bingo Prizes
2017-07-20 06:03:57 PM mzonneville lol
2017-07-20 06:03:58 PM lisasittniewski lol
2017-07-20 06:04:14 PM sara1 do you offer a ccoking class for your residents
2017-07-20 06:04:16 PM kathyhughes Yes they would come in and look through clothes and we would give them a bargain! FREE
2017-07-20 06:04:23 PM juliannag how do you make a fairy garden
2017-07-20 06:04:23 PM melissajdikken I am looking into doing a zen garden......or at the very least a mini zen garden
2017-07-20 06:04:28 PM kbertocci That might cause some conflict in our building with people saying "that was mine" when someone else claims an item. We have a few "problem individuals" if you know what I mean
2017-07-20 06:04:41 PM sara1 kathy,that is a great idea!!
2017-07-20 06:04:54 PM melissajdikken we did a fairy garden, but my residents lost interest in it. Ive been taking care of it now.....
2017-07-20 06:04:57 PM kaneika22 i just may do that at the end of our party
2017-07-20 06:05:00 PM johnl sara1 we have our head chef and dinning manager put on a cooking demonstration once a month
2017-07-20 06:05:20 PM mzonneville lots of information on the web. for fairy gardens, and really you just have to have a few things to get started
2017-07-20 06:05:33 PM kaneika22 We had a senior benefit sale last monh and I let the seniors shop for free
2017-07-20 06:05:39 PM kathyhughes I know of a facility that invited local celebrities in to do a cooking demo for the residents
2017-07-20 06:06:00 PM lisasittniewski that is an awesome idea!
2017-07-20 06:06:11 PM melissajdikken NOw that would be awesome!!!
2017-07-20 06:06:15 PM sara1 john, really that is impressive!! i work at a snf so it snt allowed to cook , other than maing bread
2017-07-20 06:06:19 PM kathyhughes It was a great community event
2017-07-20 06:06:35 PM juliannag sounds cool
2017-07-20 06:06:43 PM lisasittniewski i have been trying to develop a bank of community event ideas....thanks for the contribution!
2017-07-20 06:06:47 PM kbertocci We do "chef's corner" for our skilled side. We make items that do not need heat. For example, last week we made a peanut butter and banana quesadilla. They spread on the peanut buttter, cut up the banana with a butter knife, and rolled the tortilla. We also made sandwich crackers. The residents could use peanut butter and/or cheese with their 12 crackers. They made sandwiches and placed them in little "to-go" baggies.
2017-07-20 06:06:51 PM kathyhughes you are welcome
2017-07-20 06:06:54 PM kaneika22 Kathy what should a donation letter consist of? I need to do one for my facility
2017-07-20 06:07:03 PM juliannag we have a gal in the kitchen who is going to school to be a pastry chef and she does a demonstration for us once a month. its neat
2017-07-20 06:07:29 PM kathyhughes If you are doig a donation letter, be specific as to what you want
2017-07-20 06:07:31 PM mzonneville We had a taste of NY
2017-07-20 06:07:36 PM sara1 julian, that is very cool!!
2017-07-20 06:07:49 PM kathyhughes If you are looking for funds it should go to something
2017-07-20 06:07:55 PM kaneika22 ok
2017-07-20 06:08:17 PM melissajdikken I am slowing in the process of working towards a bubble wall for my residents, i really really want one. one that is mobile to go from room to room as a sensory
2017-07-20 06:08:23 PM kathyhughes I have gotten letters and if they don't tell me what they are looking for I donate somewhere else
2017-07-20 06:08:30 PM kaneika22 what did you serve at the taste of new york
2017-07-20 06:08:31 PM kbertocci What is a bubble wall?
2017-07-20 06:09:08 PM mzonneville The residents tasted four different spaghetti sauces that were made in NY. they voted on the best one and on the jar we even called to tell that they were the winners
2017-07-20 06:09:25 PM kaneika22 what would funds go far entertainment perhaps
2017-07-20 06:09:27 PM marciatrimiew Taste of New York sounds great
2017-07-20 06:09:33 PM juliannag activity supplies
2017-07-20 06:09:46 PM kbertocci We do that with a Chili Cookoff. The residents love it
2017-07-20 06:09:46 PM juliannag i want to do a fundraiser to get a nice popcorn machine
2017-07-20 06:09:54 PM lisasittniewski me too!!!
2017-07-20 06:09:56 PM kathyhughes Why would a person contribute for entertainment?
2017-07-20 06:09:59 PM melissajdikken its sort of hard to explain but its looks like a window so to speak, but it has water in it, when you plug it into the wall bubbles form and move, it has lights that are similar to that of reflectionsof a pool
2017-07-20 06:10:15 PM kaneika22 because the buget is so low
2017-07-20 06:10:40 PM chastityjones88 enter the chat room
2017-07-20 06:10:42 PM kathyhughes Well....that might be hard to raise funds for....
2017-07-20 06:10:48 PM kbertocci Thanks melissa - I'll have to look that up
2017-07-20 06:10:59 PM melissajdikken no problem
2017-07-20 06:11:03 PM sara1 have a bake off,for breat cancer awarness month that's what we did at another place I was working at, and they raised money for this charity.
2017-07-20 06:11:06 PM kathyhughes I might look around to see if there are grants for entertainment
2017-07-20 06:11:16 PM melissajdikken but they cost anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 or more
2017-07-20 06:11:19 PM sara1 or diffrent themes.
2017-07-20 06:11:22 PM mzonneville Do a raffle basket and tell the staff what you are doing the raffle for
2017-07-20 06:11:36 PM lisasittniewski good idea
2017-07-20 06:11:38 PM mzonneville We raise 200 for a grill on one basket
2017-07-20 06:11:44 PM kaneika22 so what would be a feasable idea
2017-07-20 06:11:49 PM kathyhughes I would do a raffle for a special event
2017-07-20 06:12:00 PM juliannag what kind of special event
2017-07-20 06:12:05 PM chastityjones88 Try asking familiys to donate items for a yard sale. We have done this before. It was fun.
2017-07-20 06:12:11 PM kathyhughes What do your residents want besides entertainment
2017-07-20 06:12:23 PM kaneika22 thats a good idea
2017-07-20 06:12:38 PM kbertocci melissa- check ebay. I just searched there and they are cheaper than online searching
2017-07-20 06:12:44 PM mzonneville End of summer basket or back to school supplies
2017-07-20 06:12:44 PM kbertocci around $300-500
2017-07-20 06:13:10 PM johnl I do not know about your state but in MN you can submit a letter of recomendation to the state lottery asking what you want and how much. If accepted, the money will come from the pull tabs around the state
2017-07-20 06:13:17 PM kaneika22 Outtings, crafts, snacks, painting,etc
2017-07-20 06:13:23 PM mzonneville don't forget to ask the high school music
2017-07-20 06:13:30 PM chastityjones88 Also we did a silent aution and we had other companys donate such as hospice and home health. The marketing team helped with reaching out to other people.
2017-07-20 06:13:34 PM melissajdikken i will have to check that out. but again i want one thats mobile to move from room to room for some of our end of stage dementia residents'
2017-07-20 06:13:35 PM kathyhughes A special event could be somethhing that the residents are interested in doing,, we raised funds to rent a bus to go fishing
2017-07-20 06:13:36 PM juliannag middle school bands too
2017-07-20 06:13:51 PM sara1 kathy, that sounds fun!!

2017-07-20 06:14:25 PM melissajdikken Yes its quite similar......
2017-07-20 06:14:46 PM kathyhughes Which might be familiar to the residents
2017-07-20 06:15:01 PM chastityjones88 Games, outings, a program called memories alive
2017-07-20 06:15:12 PM johnl Sounds like melissajdikken is buying supplies she secretly wants to use as well ;) jk!
2017-07-20 06:15:18 PM kbertocci Sorry everyone, the chat froze and kicked me out. I'm back.
2017-07-20 06:15:20 PM juliannag whats a therapy light
2017-07-20 06:15:24 PM melissajdikken i have a feeling it will be a big success
2017-07-20 06:15:37 PM kbertocci A lava lamp would be a cheaper version to see if the sensory was enjoyed first! :) great idea
2017-07-20 06:15:48 PM chastityjones88 left the chat room
2017-07-20 06:15:54 PM chastityjones88 enter the chat room
2017-07-20 06:15:55 PM kaneika22 thanks @john great idea
2017-07-20 06:16:20 PM kbertocci Does anyone have a sensory room?
2017-07-20 06:16:22 PM melissajdikken ha johnl not so much, i currently have a donation for the therapy light but not for the bubble wall.
2017-07-20 06:16:29 PM lisasittniewski I wish....
2017-07-20 06:16:31 PM kbertocci We are looking into making one in our facility
2017-07-20 06:16:42 PM juliannag i love that idea
2017-07-20 06:17:00 PM mzonneville I think a sensory room would be great, wanted one for the last 15 years
2017-07-20 06:17:13 PM lisasittniewski i may have to see what i can do about making one...my whole faciltiy is memory care of various stages and i think we could really benefit from one
2017-07-20 06:17:18 PM juliannag what all would you put in it. how would you display the items
2017-07-20 06:17:40 PM melissajdikken Yes it would be cheaper, however not as effective. I did try a smaller version with no success, i brought in my sons water light, huge difference.
2017-07-20 06:18:06 PM kathyhughes What can you do in a Sensory Room?
2017-07-20 06:18:07 PM melissajdikken larger visual in comparision
2017-07-20 06:18:19 PM kbertocci I would keep the floor hard wood/tile as most of the residents are in wheelchairs -- but im thinking placing different types of carpet patches on the walls (there is the shagy, rough, etc.). You're able to get sample patches for free at lowes/home depot
2017-07-20 06:18:28 PM kaneika22 We have a resident that tears up almost everythinig he puts his hands on...I would love to get a lava lamp, etc but he would tear it up
2017-07-20 06:18:46 PM melissajdikken I would LOVE a sensory room, ive been watching videos on what i could do if we ever had the opportunity to build one.......
2017-07-20 06:19:02 PM kbertocci kaneika- we have one, as well. MR diagnosis, as well as MS. interesting combination of hyperactivity
2017-07-20 06:19:04 PM juliannag would you only put things attached to the walls?
2017-07-20 06:19:06 PM lisasittniewski a room or area specifically designed for sensory interraction. I would love to have a snozeln room, too, but i don't know if the facility would go for that
2017-07-20 06:19:22 PM lisasittniewski sooooo expensive!
2017-07-20 06:19:30 PM kathyhughes Alright,,,so you place the resident in the room and then what? Does someone stay with them
2017-07-20 06:19:36 PM sara1 we just bought a sound machine, and a lava lamp as well, since the majority of the residents have damentia it's nice for the lower functioning
2017-07-20 06:19:39 PM marciatrimiew lot of technical murals and lights
2017-07-20 06:19:39 PM mzonneville soft music, and a cloud machine gazing is always good,
2017-07-20 06:19:45 PM kaneika22 yes
2017-07-20 06:19:59 PM kbertocci I would also hand items from the ceiling such as the squish balls, but I would have to make sure that they would not be able to be injured. Yes, skilled facility for us always has supervision for sensory residents
2017-07-20 06:20:00 PM lisasittniewski yes...aides would serve to help them interact with the sensory items, smells, sounds, etc
2017-07-20 06:20:01 PM melissajdikken The sensory room i researched they had lots of visual stimulants like lights, rope lights, bubble wall, sound machines, different wall textures, a sensory swing,
2017-07-20 06:20:13 PM marciatrimiew yes interactive displays
2017-07-20 06:20:17 PM melissajdikken and yes the activity aide stays with them
2017-07-20 06:20:19 PM mzonneville chair massesages
2017-07-20 06:20:40 PM johnl diffuser would be nice in a sensory room
2017-07-20 06:20:58 PM lisasittniewski with lavender, of course :)
2017-07-20 06:21:01 PM juliannag that sounds like a good way to get dementia residents involved
2017-07-20 06:21:10 PM marciatrimiew sandboxes with elements to touch..
2017-07-20 06:21:11 PM kaneika22 I took residents to the mall for the massage chairs and they loved it
2017-07-20 06:21:17 PM johnl Ohh! An aquarium?
2017-07-20 06:21:20 PM kathyhughes I have seen a few sensory rooms and they are always empty so I would make sure that it was used
2017-07-20 06:21:24 PM kbertocci I just created a "beach" with a sandbox and they loved it
2017-07-20 06:21:43 PM melissajdikken diffusers are nice but always apprehensive because i dont know what is going to be a positive stimulant or adversive.............
2017-07-20 06:21:57 PM lisasittniewski they were probably empty because no one helped the residents interact with them. there would probably always need to be staff to assist them
2017-07-20 06:22:00 PM marciatrimiew stars in the ceiling or images on the walls and floor..
2017-07-20 06:22:11 PM mzonneville That's the problem with the sensory room, you would have to have one person use it everyday, who has staff that could do that
2017-07-20 06:22:23 PM kbertocci Are you all skilled facilities?
2017-07-20 06:22:37 PM johnl I am skilled
2017-07-20 06:22:41 PM sara1 john, I agree!! yes 3xa month we have a sensory stimulation with essential oils.
2017-07-20 06:22:45 PM kbertocci We have specific alloted times on the schedule for "sensory group", "sensory visits", etc
2017-07-20 06:22:57 PM kbertocci Minimum of once a week.
2017-07-20 06:22:57 PM kaneika22 Im at a Memory care
2017-07-20 06:22:58 PM kathyhughes There are lots of antiques and pictures of your town to set up so that residents were familiar with the items in there
2017-07-20 06:23:07 PM melissajdikken i am always doing sensory activities......massage and music, textures, ect
2017-07-20 06:23:13 PM lisasittniewski i am memory care only in assisted living enhanced...the resident care aides would help them in the room...its protocol to the facility that aides do activities AND direct care. housekeeping does cleaning and laundry so the aides don't have to. more time to spend iwht residents
2017-07-20 06:23:39 PM marciatrimiew lots of color and visualization items
2017-07-20 06:23:41 PM kaneika22 yes we have the cities pictures all over our building
2017-07-20 06:23:44 PM melissajdikken SKilled nursing facility
2017-07-20 06:24:06 PM juliannag are you ever afraid that would over stimulate a resident with all the lights and colors in a sensory room?
2017-07-20 06:24:21 PM lisasittniewski some residents can't handle the stimulation...some need it
2017-07-20 06:24:30 PM lisasittniewski you have to figure out which ones would benefit from it
2017-07-20 06:25:03 PM kbertocci Does anyone have a "then" and "now" book for the long term residents who have been there for an excessive amout of time? I created a 5 inch binder that has newspaper articles dating back to when the facility was created in the 60's. Everytime there is a new event, it is added to the binder. They love lookinf at how it has evolved, as well as photos of themselves
2017-07-20 06:25:33 PM kbertocci looking*
2017-07-20 06:25:42 PM lisasittniewski i am assisted living but we take all levels of dementia care. the only thing we cannot do is physically put food in thier mouths, so if they stop feeding themselves, they have to move on to skilled. most times, they just pass in our care. we can do hoyer lifts, but just can't feed them.
2017-07-20 06:25:45 PM kaneika22 Thats awesome @kbertocci
2017-07-20 06:25:46 PM lisasittniewski ny regs....
2017-07-20 06:25:53 PM johnl Yes that is an awesome idea!
2017-07-20 06:26:14 PM juliannag really?? we are assisted and memory care. we can feed, but no lifts.
2017-07-20 06:26:24 PM melissajdikken no because the director should do a task analysis to deterimine how long the sensory activities would be beneficial to the individual resident
2017-07-20 06:26:35 PM lisasittniewski lol...ny will not let us feed them! isnt that funny?
2017-07-20 06:26:47 PM melissajdikken my facility didnt do any sensory procedures until i started working there.
2017-07-20 06:26:59 PM kathyhughes Each state has their own regs for Assisted Living
2017-07-20 06:27:24 PM juliannag Hm. I guess I didnt ever think of that, I dont get out of Michigan much though.
2017-07-20 06:27:30 PM kaneika22 I created a photo album and thats were I put pictures of events and residents in activities
2017-07-20 06:27:33 PM lisasittniewski i know...i wish it was more universal. we could hire a cna, but they still can't feed them because its assisted living makes no sense to me
2017-07-20 06:27:33 PM kathyhughes And have the residents improved since you started working with them?
2017-07-20 06:27:47 PM melissajdikken yes
2017-07-20 06:27:54 PM kathyhughes Great
2017-07-20 06:28:07 PM lisasittniewski good for you melissa!
2017-07-20 06:28:08 PM kaneika22 that is Great
2017-07-20 06:28:15 PM mzonneville wonderful
2017-07-20 06:28:19 PM juliannag it
2017-07-20 06:28:25 PM juliannag it's rewarding for sure! good job
2017-07-20 06:28:30 PM kathyhughes I had a soroity come in once a month and they did our scrapbooks of activities for us
2017-07-20 06:28:50 PM sara1 what do you all do on friday's at the facility?
2017-07-20 06:28:51 PM melissajdikken one of the benefits from working in a group home for so many years and my education in disabilities is a plus i guess.
2017-07-20 06:28:54 PM kathyhughes The residents would join them and enjoy the conversations
2017-07-20 06:28:59 PM kaneika22 thats a great idea
