2017-08-10 06:08:47 PM mzonneville i just might do that
2017-08-10 06:08:48 PM monac I heard the staffing is bad right now nation wide according to my administrator
2017-08-10 06:09:09 PM mzonneville we are having staffing issues as well
2017-08-10 06:09:17 PM kimstutz we received 6 nice afgans and staff took them.. admin staff :(
2017-08-10 06:09:17 PM jrothermel85 yeah making cuts were they can of course activities is expendable
2017-08-10 06:09:19 PM mzonneville need more cna's
2017-08-10 06:09:20 PM sandyping As I am sure we can't offer what most good employees deserve to get paid.
2017-08-10 06:09:29 PM jrothermel85 and cnas
2017-08-10 06:09:32 PM 8800971 they have to pay better its not fair
2017-08-10 06:09:42 PM johnl same but also our census is very low. We are at 56 and and budgeted for 70
2017-08-10 06:09:50 PM kimstutz yes our activities dept is getting a cut in funds also
2017-08-10 06:09:55 PM jrothermel85 Pa state requirement is at the very least 5 aides on days shift per floor
2017-08-10 06:10:00 PM anissa44 They need more of everything in my facility. Turn over is huge lately.
2017-08-10 06:10:08 PM taras That is scary love my job and pray that people who have huge hearts will come and be a part of a great group of people....ACTIVITIES!
2017-08-10 06:10:10 PM kimstutz we are loaded with residents so I don't understand why the budget cut
2017-08-10 06:10:14 PM sandyping Yes, but I do realize we have a budget. Trying to get more vollenteers
2017-08-10 06:10:25 PM monac wonder what is going on with the low stafffing and turn overs
2017-08-10 06:10:43 PM taras Sandy--have you tried area churches, schools and other senior groups?
2017-08-10 06:10:45 PM jrothermel85 my facility makes it very hard to get volunteers.
2017-08-10 06:10:46 PM shirleym we've been struggling too with staffing
2017-08-10 06:10:48 PM anissa44 Mine has issues with uppper management I believe.
2017-08-10 06:10:53 PM kimstutz we have a constant turn over in CNA's and also desk nurse
2017-08-10 06:10:55 PM kathyhughes because in some states you can make more working at McDonalds!
2017-08-10 06:10:56 PM shubbard720 same here jrothermel
2017-08-10 06:10:57 PM anissa44 Mine too Jrother
2017-08-10 06:10:58 PM kimstutz med nurses
2017-08-10 06:11:02 PM sandyping Our group is going through a transition phase
2017-08-10 06:11:07 PM 8800971 I think that happens in most facilities
2017-08-10 06:11:09 PM taras We could use a few more CNAs...
2017-08-10 06:11:11 PM kimstutz wow, that is so true Kathy
2017-08-10 06:11:12 PM monac that is very true kahy
2017-08-10 06:11:17 PM monac kathy
2017-08-10 06:11:19 PM kathyhughes Less stress
2017-08-10 06:11:19 PM anissa44 They make them do a background check AND give them a hard time about when they come in
2017-08-10 06:11:21 PM kimstutz I hadn't thought of that
2017-08-10 06:11:23 PM shubbard720 we are short 2 nurse managers and many CNAs
2017-08-10 06:11:27 PM 8800971 true they have to take better care and pay more!!
2017-08-10 06:11:36 PM kaneika22 We are working on teamwork and communication
2017-08-10 06:11:44 PM mzonneville and i don't think they train the cna's like they used to,
2017-08-10 06:11:58 PM sandyping Health care is so expensive but it's not going to the workers
2017-08-10 06:11:59 PM jrothermel85 you got that right mzonneville
2017-08-10 06:12:08 PM kathyhughes Making the facility a great place to work will retain staff
2017-08-10 06:12:14 PM kathyhughes but its hard to do
2017-08-10 06:12:14 PM kaneika22 true
2017-08-10 06:12:27 PM kimstutz I've noticed the CNA's are more on board with bringing ppl to our actitivites now that we are helping them where ever we can ... up and down the halls
2017-08-10 06:12:34 PM shirleym agreed Kathy
2017-08-10 06:12:43 PM 8800971 especially when new staff comes into bad attitudes thats what they learn first
2017-08-10 06:12:49 PM sandyping I agree making it a great place with other benefits is the way to keep people.
2017-08-10 06:13:03 PM anissa44 we ha d bbenn working on making a better work place.
2017-08-10 06:13:08 PM monac bad attitudes from a bad grapevine
2017-08-10 06:13:09 PM mzonneville we have 8 long time cna's if we could just have new staff work/train the new staff it would be helpful
2017-08-10 06:13:16 PM 8800971 yup
2017-08-10 06:13:18 PM jrothermel85 its hard yes but the DOA and Administrator at my place do not leave the offices at all. Never make rounds on to the floors to see how everything is going. Great leadership.
2017-08-10 06:13:22 PM taras Amen Kathy-- our goal as activity department is to let it begin with us...We want to be the spark so that even other departments will make it worthwhile to have a good attitude and make it a better place to work as well as for the residents
2017-08-10 06:13:22 PM shirleym I''ve noticed that too kimstutz.
2017-08-10 06:13:26 PM sandyping We have a great scholership programs that is paying for my course and even offers to pay for citizenship for some
2017-08-10 06:13:34 PM kaneika22 We have started to have an open forum to discuss problems and concerns all management are required to be at the meetings
2017-08-10 06:13:55 PM jrothermel85 that is a start
2017-08-10 06:14:12 PM 8800971 I suggested at morning meeting that we should each have a time to make rounds even though i am on the units often they agreed its helping
2017-08-10 06:14:18 PM shirleym great aproach taras
2017-08-10 06:14:29 PM kimstutz yes taras agreed
2017-08-10 06:14:31 PM sandyping I think it's a constant battle, but i'm alwys trying to stay positive
2017-08-10 06:14:33 PM shubbard720 good idea!
2017-08-10 06:14:37 PM mzonneville i always tell the staff that its not the owners that are going to make the place shine its the staff and the staff that cares will show the family we are a great place
2017-08-10 06:14:49 PM taras It is just a thought, but it is our desire as a team to grow and better our team and those that work with us!!
2017-08-10 06:15:12 PM taras Truth mzonneville!!! MAJOR truth! People notice more than we realize!!
2017-08-10 06:15:20 PM kathyhughes you are right Mary
2017-08-10 06:15:25 PM sandyping yes, I am in the process of building a team for our new memorary care unit and I want to find team players
2017-08-10 06:15:26 PM mzonneville darn clicks
2017-08-10 06:16:21 PM 8800971 I am being extra friendly and appreciative I see a small change they don't give me nasty looks when I ask for something
2017-08-10 06:16:29 PM kimstutz haha, me too
2017-08-10 06:16:35 PM mzonneville sandyping, always ask the caregivers what they think its so important for them to be heard
2017-08-10 06:16:37 PM kathyhughes What can we all do to help keep staff?
2017-08-10 06:16:42 PM shirleym I love it 8800971! It does work : )
2017-08-10 06:16:45 PM kimstutz exactly... being very nice to them, and its working :)
2017-08-10 06:16:50 PM monac Kathy is management and Activity Director about the same
2017-08-10 06:16:53 PM 8800971 it is little at a time
2017-08-10 06:17:02 PM taras I think being positive is a start....or trying to be.
2017-08-10 06:17:09 PM sandyping I have a great supervisor and she makes us want to do our best
2017-08-10 06:17:10 PM johnl Kill them with kindness!
2017-08-10 06:17:16 PM taras Encourage each other....
2017-08-10 06:17:26 PM kaneika22 communicate
2017-08-10 06:17:34 PM sandyping We try to have fun, work as a team and be respecful
2017-08-10 06:17:36 PM 8800971 try to change the vibe in the building get to know the new staff right away
2017-08-10 06:17:36 PM kathyhughes Most places the Activity Director is a Dept Head and should know about managing staff
2017-08-10 06:17:38 PM jrothermel85 i try to be kind and understanding the aide and other nursing staff are worn thin as us.
2017-08-10 06:17:49 PM kimstutz I made popcorn today for residents, and shared with nursing staff, and CNA's...
2017-08-10 06:18:00 PM mzonneville i told the scheduler that i needed 3 cna to go to the fair and would any of them voluneteer I got my 3
2017-08-10 06:18:02 PM anissa44 I am dept head but no one listens to me
2017-08-10 06:18:06 PM jrothermel85 yes we share left over as well with staff
2017-08-10 06:18:14 PM kimstutz yes, they love it
2017-08-10 06:18:32 PM mzonneville no no sell your popcorn
2017-08-10 06:18:34 PM sandyping I also try to share all of the treats the residents and I make. I bribe them with goodies. it helps
2017-08-10 06:18:39 PM anissa44 Been working on being more assertivie but staying kind
2017-08-10 06:18:43 PM kimstutz when we do milkshakes, we make extra on purpose, they know when residents are served, they can come in and get one too
2017-08-10 06:19:04 PM kaneika22 I deal with attitudes daily however i dont let their attitude depict mines toward them. I told them that we dont have to like each other to work together for the residents.
2017-08-10 06:19:04 PM kimstutz haha, great idea to sell them popcorn... oh awesomeness thank you
2017-08-10 06:19:08 PM 8800971 the hard is part for some reason cna's will not help activities
2017-08-10 06:19:12 PM monac I was told today they are totally different
2017-08-10 06:19:42 PM johnl I make a point to learn everyone's first name and always say hi when walking pass. Even if I don't know their name I always say hi!
2017-08-10 06:19:43 PM kimstutz yes, they are. but we all serve the same people.. sorry your place is so tough on activities
2017-08-10 06:19:44 PM taras We share our snacks with staff. Today we made s'mores. Several residents helped pass them out to our CNAs and nurses!! They loved it and i think they loved the fact that the residents were so willing to share and show appreciation!
2017-08-10 06:19:53 PM sandyping I also do the same, however I have had to tell some staff that they need to wait until the residents are servced. I had to be blunt but, they come first
2017-08-10 06:19:54 PM 8800971 they were taught they are seperate. yet my staff is always doing things that are not our job we do it for the resident
2017-08-10 06:19:55 PM kaneika22 Cna dont understand the activities department.
2017-08-10 06:19:58 PM kimstutz I do too hohnl
2017-08-10 06:20:22 PM shirleym we make & sell popcorn as a fundraiser for various donations to charrities. The residents love doing the service project
2017-08-10 06:20:26 PM kaneika22 as i manager i tell new orientees what i expect of them
2017-08-10 06:20:26 PM 8800971 no they don't
2017-08-10 06:20:35 PM kathyhughes Well when staff feels that they are short and they are being told that they are short all the time that becomes ingrained....so when we ask them to help that is just one more job
2017-08-10 06:20:40 PM kimstutz I love that idea ... will def implement it
2017-08-10 06:21:17 PM mzonneville thats right kathy then you see them sit at the nursing station on their phones
2017-08-10 06:21:17 PM taras Good point to remember Kathy....
2017-08-10 06:21:20 PM 8800971 true but I make sure we always helpful it doesnt rub off
2017-08-10 06:21:25 PM kathyhughes It was not the CNA's job to escort residents to activities....I always went aroung to escort residents so the right residents got to the right activities
2017-08-10 06:21:29 PM kimstutz true Kathy, that is why we in actitivities,, at least 2 of us, try to help the CNA's when possible.. they even are telling me thank you now
2017-08-10 06:21:33 PM kaneika22 thats true kathy and i help them. I take residents to the bathroom, shower and etc
2017-08-10 06:21:39 PM kathyhughes and I was able to check on all of the residents
2017-08-10 06:21:40 PM sandyping i try to help the CNA s when I can even with simple things like ansering a call bell and getting someone a drink if i can
2017-08-10 06:21:54 PM kimstutz exactly sandping
2017-08-10 06:21:55 PM taras I just try to live by the Golden Rule....
2017-08-10 06:22:16 PM shirleym me too sandy we're working as a team for the resident
2017-08-10 06:22:30 PM taras It isn't always easy and there are days where I fall short, but I want the others to know that I sincerely appreciate what they do
2017-08-10 06:22:34 PM kathyhughes then they need to know what people see when they see nursing on their phones
2017-08-10 06:22:42 PM kimstutz me too, taras
2017-08-10 06:22:46 PM sandyping Some CNA s are set, but a lot are open when they see that we can help each other
2017-08-10 06:22:49 PM mzonneville i agree with you kathy, just that when you needed to get a resident to the right activities the resident usually needed help from the cna
2017-08-10 06:22:49 PM 8800971 no but if someone want to go to an activity thats in progress they will not bring them up they will call or just leave the resident there
2017-08-10 06:23:02 PM kathyhughes Sometimes they don't realize that they are shooting themselves in the foot
2017-08-10 06:23:32 PM kimstutz one of our residents highlighted the actitivites she wanted to go to, and wrote a note to cna's to please have her up and ready for those actitivies.. haha, it was great
2017-08-10 06:23:47 PM kaneika22 that is what a caregiver told me the other day however if you are the one to escort and do activities you are leaving residents unattended?
2017-08-10 06:23:50 PM 8800971 there are good apples and bad one's thats every where
2017-08-10 06:24:06 PM monac I would include cna's in the activity, that always helped at times
2017-08-10 06:24:10 PM kathyhughes When I did orientation I would ask staff what they would do if they were in charge of 39 residents by themselves
2017-08-10 06:24:11 PM anissa44 That's the problem I am having Kaneika
2017-08-10 06:24:15 PM kimstutz for us, it depends on who is in the activity room if we leave or not
2017-08-10 06:24:32 PM kimstutz good question Katy
2017-08-10 06:24:33 PM johnl What were some of the answers Kathy?
2017-08-10 06:24:34 PM kimstutz kathy
2017-08-10 06:24:35 PM shirleym same with me kim
2017-08-10 06:24:40 PM sandyping so true , try to find the good apples.j I like that question Kathy
2017-08-10 06:25:28 PM kathyhughes They said they would leave....I told them that in activities we have groups that big and there is only 1 person there to engage them and do the activity
2017-08-10 06:25:54 PM jrothermel85 that happens alot to me in the morning programs all the behaviors are up and ready to go but the ones that actually appreciate the activities are still waiting for the a.m care and don't get to the activity till it is halfway over. I get up set with that they give me a fall risk and then I can not gather more residents. The cognative ones suffer the most. they get a raw deal.
2017-08-10 06:26:08 PM kathyhughes They thought about that and sometimes they actually realized that they could be a little less critical
2017-08-10 06:26:14 PM jrothermel85 So on my free time I do one to ones when i can.
2017-08-10 06:26:25 PM kimstutz hopefully there is a phone they could request assistance from cna' or other activity staff if resident is being disruptive or needs to use bathroom
2017-08-10 06:26:41 PM johnl You have free time? haha
2017-08-10 06:26:48 PM sandyping left the chat room
2017-08-10 06:26:53 PM sandyping enter the chat room
2017-08-10 06:27:02 PM kimstutz agreed jrothermel85
2017-08-10 06:27:12 PM jrothermel85 ha ha ha few and far between. Sometimes i stay off the clock and chit chat
2017-08-10 06:27:16 PM taras I LOVE 1:1!
2017-08-10 06:27:30 PM sandyping I also love 1 to l
2017-08-10 06:27:33 PM 8800971 I have been there about a year I do see better attitudes because we are non stop there is always something going on some cna's come in and look shocked so many low functioning residents are engaged
2017-08-10 06:27:37 PM kimstutz I schedule room visits for first hour on acouple days for myself, then other activity staff have other days
2017-08-10 06:27:40 PM kimstutz for one to ones
2017-08-10 06:27:42 PM taras They give you an opportunity to really get to know the residents!!
2017-08-10 06:27:55 PM kimstutz absolutely taras
2017-08-10 06:27:56 PM kaneika22 our 2-10 shift will come in and help with the residents in activities however the problem is with the 6-2 shift

2017-08-10 06:28:44 PM kaneika22 lol
2017-08-10 06:28:45 PM kathyhughes The evening shift can be a challenge
2017-08-10 06:28:52 PM sandyping I like the idea of having it first thing in the morning. We go out at breakfast and talk to many folks or go to rooms
2017-08-10 06:29:11 PM monac I even do crafts, trivia, bible reading, snacks during my 1 0n 1 times
2017-08-10 06:29:24 PM kimstutz yes, that's what we do I typically go into the dining area and share the days activities and then remind them through out day
2017-08-10 06:29:26 PM 8800971 i depend on my staff if anyone else does something I am appreciative
2017-08-10 06:29:39 PM jrothermel85 i mainly listen to the ladies complain. I guess I am the in house therapist. lol
2017-08-10 06:29:40 PM kimstutz excellent 1.1 ideas

2017-08-10 06:30:08 PM kaneika22 Kathy so what things should or do you cover to new employees about activties?
2017-08-10 06:30:13 PM monac cranky till they get there coffee. Sometimes treat them with doughnuts in the morning, the CNA's you can always win them with sweets
2017-08-10 06:30:18 PM kimstutz we take 4-5 residents out to breakfast twice a month. they love it, we rotate who goes
2017-08-10 06:30:19 PM 8800971 we do alot of activity carts for one to one's carts packed with stuff to do
2017-08-10 06:30:25 PM sandyping I have one resident who alwys needs to go have a BM when she see's me. LOL
2017-08-10 06:30:31 PM 8800971 coffee and donuts a favorite

2017-08-10 06:30:55 PM kathyhughes I would have them draw pictures of what they like to do in their leisure time and then they would share them
2017-08-10 06:31:09 PM kathyhughes then I would place their activities on a calendar
