DateTimeFromToMessage
2018-05-17 06:10:17 PM tknox23508 the residents appreciate us though
2018-05-17 06:10:19 PM melissaz How do you get care staff engaged in programming, or one to ones with residents? My memory care care staff seem to hide away during programs.
2018-05-17 06:10:22 PM priscillad Love tht idea, karen...will be trying that
2018-05-17 06:10:27 PM priscillad thx
2018-05-17 06:10:31 PM kathyhughes I preferred to see the bright side of things and remember the residents are why we are here
2018-05-17 06:10:31 PM olivcar That's all that matters at the end of the day
2018-05-17 06:10:37 PM suerahn I feel that the residents appreciate us and that is real important and the reason we are there
2018-05-17 06:10:44 PM susankent I did get some good feed back from my activities for the employees during this week so i did feel good with that
2018-05-17 06:10:50 PM karencurtis susan, theyre really simple, especially for our demtia residents. They brought them back to their rooms and loved them. check out you tube for videos
2018-05-17 06:10:55 PM priscillad Yes, as long as my residents are happy, im happy
2018-05-17 06:10:57 PM tknox23508 i agree
2018-05-17 06:11:08 PM michellelheldt i agree
2018-05-17 06:11:10 PM tonjaboyd I feel the same way Kathy
2018-05-17 06:11:23 PM kathyhughes You can ask the staff what their hobbies are and then ask them to do a demo of their interests
2018-05-17 06:11:30 PM susankent in my opinion the residents are really the number one concern and staff are secondary
2018-05-17 06:11:55 PM tknox23508 i have been doing this for 17 years and i am glad i love what i do and the residents are my heart
2018-05-17 06:12:05 PM kathyhughes Right so let's not feel bad...everyone is busy doing their jobs
2018-05-17 06:12:17 PM karencurtis we're going to be doing red white and blue dessert in mason jars for Memorial Day too, lots of fun
2018-05-17 06:12:17 PM suerahn I completed the inservice on quality of life and I think it will help the staff understand a little more
2018-05-17 06:12:26 PM susankent I have tried to involve staff with resident activity but I get the answer of I don't have time for that.
2018-05-17 06:12:53 PM tknox23508 does anybody have any ideas for a carnival we are doing one for our memory support residents
2018-05-17 06:12:56 PM kathyhughes I just talked to a friend of mine who was an Activity Director many years ago and she was wonderful....but we all felt that way, but got over it
2018-05-17 06:13:08 PM tknox23508 i want to turn the whole unit into a carnival
2018-05-17 06:13:49 PM priscillad love your ideas, karen!
2018-05-17 06:13:53 PM susankent what if you decorate their doors like booths at a carnival.
2018-05-17 06:13:54 PM priscillad creative
2018-05-17 06:14:07 PM kathyhughes look up carnivals of the past....they would love the decor and the games,,,ask the residents what they remember about carnivals and see what they remember
2018-05-17 06:14:07 PM tknox23508 thats sounds good
2018-05-17 06:14:13 PM melissaz I get that too, but the simple fact is they do have time for it. I'm trying to do some culture change on persons vs completing tasks.
2018-05-17 06:14:30 PM tknox23508 i like that
2018-05-17 06:14:45 PM suerahn maybe you can print pictures for memories
2018-05-17 06:14:52 PM kathyhughes We also talked about what carnival food was their favorite
2018-05-17 06:15:05 PM karencurtis tknox i ran a relay race with our Japanese exchange students and had them bring each item and drop it into a bucket on the residents lap. The residents loved watching the kids race toward them. Some of the ideas I cam up with were great. orange under the chin, bite an apple and carry it in the mouth down to bucket, balloon between the legs, suck up mini marshmallow with straw and bring to bucket were some of the things we did in the race
2018-05-17 06:15:21 PM olivcar It'd be neat if you could get dietary involved and have them make carnival food, like deep fried oreos, funnel cake, cotton candy, etc.
2018-05-17 06:15:26 PM karencurtis tomorrow we're serving cotton candy and bags of popcorn
2018-05-17 06:16:19 PM rbudd THAT IS OUR THEME FOR TOMORROW
2018-05-17 06:16:28 PM susankent I can hardly get our dietary to make one special meal a month. sometimes it's one item out of six. pretty sad.
2018-05-17 06:16:32 PM kathyhughes The NYState fair is in Syracuse ....so we would go and get the food from the fair and have entertainment
2018-05-17 06:16:39 PM suerahn We had a carnival outdoors lat year and had a bunch of different games and prizes. They had a blast
2018-05-17 06:16:42 PM karencurtis dietary made awesome burritos and had nachos tuesday, that was fun
2018-05-17 06:16:45 PM kathyhughes we even video'd the fair for the residents
2018-05-17 06:16:54 PM melissaz That is great!
2018-05-17 06:17:14 PM priscillad The carnival idea is on my bucket list of ideas...thx for sharing
2018-05-17 06:17:18 PM kathyhughes So many could not go so we brought the fair to them
2018-05-17 06:17:28 PM susankent I cook for my residents at times and bring it in for them.
2018-05-17 06:17:43 PM olivcar We're lucky that our dietary department is so involved- but our dining services director used to be an activities director so she gets it. But my last facility was nearly impossible to get dietary involvement- mostly bc it was a challenged building
2018-05-17 06:17:45 PM tknox23508 good ideas i will try some of them and let yall know how it turns out thank you so much
2018-05-17 06:17:45 PM priscillad I like that idea as well, Kathy
2018-05-17 06:18:10 PM karencurtis Kathy, are we able to print out these chats?
2018-05-17 06:18:36 PM melissaz I'm starting to plan the state fair for my residents. In MN it's in August. Everyone "wants" to go but no one ever follows through with it. So I plan a state fair day. The food is always the most important part. What fair foods do you try and have at your gatherings?
2018-05-17 06:18:38 PM kathyhughes In NY people stand for hours to get a baked potato so we would do that and have the sausage and onions and peppers
2018-05-17 06:18:56 PM kathyhughes You can....you have to look at the Help video for the chat
2018-05-17 06:18:57 PM melissaz Wow that is dedication!
2018-05-17 06:19:06 PM karencurtis ok, thank you
2018-05-17 06:19:10 PM susankent still trying to coordinate with my administrator to bring residents to the teaching zoo in our area. have to leave early during week so when my assistant brings residents to zoo I can still run an activity for the residents still in the facility
2018-05-17 06:19:33 PM melissaz that sounds like a fun outing
2018-05-17 06:19:57 PM kathyhughes We concentrated on local foods that are unique to NY
2018-05-17 06:20:16 PM karencurtis does anyone have any ideas on how I can play the game Concentration using a white board?
2018-05-17 06:20:21 PM melissaz I'm curious...are any of them on a stick or is that just a MN thing?
2018-05-17 06:20:59 PM kathyhughes I think that lots of places have stuff on a stick
2018-05-17 06:21:19 PM kathyhughes Which concentration game Karen?
2018-05-17 06:21:22 PM melissaz Ok, I haven't been to any other state fair:)
2018-05-17 06:21:30 PM susankent Karen what if you drew the puzzle on the white board and taped squares on top of the puzzle
2018-05-17 06:21:45 PM kathyhughes I was just having a flash back to the TV show! 100 years ago
2018-05-17 06:22:10 PM tonjaboyd left the chat room
2018-05-17 06:22:18 PM tonjaboyd enter the chat room
2018-05-17 06:22:24 PM susankent right that's the show I'm thinking about. forget the emcee but it was very popular
2018-05-17 06:22:29 PM karencurtis you flip over 2 cards, then back over and try to remember which ones match up
2018-05-17 06:22:48 PM tonjaboyd sorry about that
2018-05-17 06:23:07 PM susankent oh karen sorry that's not what I was thinking
2018-05-17 06:23:12 PM kathyhughes Use a deck of cards...also there are online concentration games that you could use
2018-05-17 06:23:30 PM karencurtis susan yes i thought of doing that. My residents are craving new brian games and ive been coming up with some great ones, but id love to do Concentration
2018-05-17 06:23:34 PM tknox23508 yes like perfection
2018-05-17 06:23:34 PM kathyhughes just project them on the wall and have residents guess
2018-05-17 06:23:44 PM tknox23508 do yall remember that game
2018-05-17 06:23:53 PM kathyhughes Do you all have an overhead projector?
2018-05-17 06:24:03 PM amberrwetherill I do not
2018-05-17 06:24:04 PM karencurtis thanks, using a deck of cards sound great
2018-05-17 06:24:07 PM michellelheldt nope
2018-05-17 06:24:20 PM tonjaboyd No we do not
2018-05-17 06:24:24 PM suerahn Im working on getting a projector with a DVD player
2018-05-17 06:24:26 PM tknox23508 or you can use a chalk board or dry erase board
2018-05-17 06:24:30 PM karencurtis tknox am i showing my age?
2018-05-17 06:24:30 PM priscillad no. im looking for one though..to buy n not rent
2018-05-17 06:24:30 PM melissaz No, but I would love one.
2018-05-17 06:24:34 PM rbudd i dont recall it
2018-05-17 06:24:58 PM kathyhughes Call your local schools...they might have one that you can get cheap!
2018-05-17 06:24:59 PM karencurtis no projector
2018-05-17 06:25:06 PM karencurtis good idea
2018-05-17 06:25:07 PM melissaz Good idea!
2018-05-17 06:25:25 PM rbudd love the idea
2018-05-17 06:25:31 PM kathyhughes We would copy "Hidden Pictures" on overhead slides and the residents would look for the items
2018-05-17 06:25:34 PM priscillad i didnt think of that..thx kathy..ill be callin them tmrr(y)
2018-05-17 06:25:35 PM michellelheldt good idea
2018-05-17 06:25:50 PM suerahn I love that idea Kathy
2018-05-17 06:25:51 PM tonjaboyd Thanks I will check it out
2018-05-17 06:26:03 PM kathyhughes I know that somewhere there are used ones that no one uses anymore
2018-05-17 06:26:04 PM susankent the only thing I have is a karaoke machine with no screen for the residents. my residents won't do memory games. they like bingo, music, bible study and church. just started with a therapy dog, they loose interest after about 10 minutes.
2018-05-17 06:26:44 PM melissaz Have you tried therapy dog as one to one so it could last 2-10 mins depending on the person?
2018-05-17 06:27:11 PM melissaz That's how I run our therapy dog. We typically see 10-15 people in an hour.
2018-05-17 06:27:16 PM tknox23508 my residents love the pet therapy do and bunny
2018-05-17 06:27:20 PM tknox23508 dog
2018-05-17 06:27:20 PM susankent they do like going outside so when the weather gets a little more stable here i am planning a carnival as well
2018-05-17 06:27:40 PM priscillad yes, we have pet therapy weekly. my residents really love "Belle"
2018-05-17 06:28:21 PM tknox23508 we have it weekly as well
2018-05-17 06:28:28 PM kathyhughes There are lots of games available on Pintrest
2018-05-17 06:28:42 PM kathyhughes and some yard games that look great
2018-05-17 06:28:50 PM rbudd we have it 2x a month
2018-05-17 06:28:51 PM susankent meissaz. yes I do have the trainer do one on one as well. that does work a little better. I sometimes bring residents outside for exercise and that's where the therapy dog starts his time with us.
2018-05-17 06:29:02 PM tknox23508 our memory staff wants a facility dog does any one have a facility dog
2018-05-17 06:29:37 PM kathyhughes Find someone to bring their dog in during the day
2018-05-17 06:29:44 PM suerahn No, but that would be great
2018-05-17 06:29:51 PM kathyhughes Having a dog there 24/7 is not good for the dog
2018-05-17 06:30:00 PM tonjaboyd we have a very fat cat named silm
2018-05-17 06:30:05 PM kathyhughes It is like being on duty all day and night
2018-05-17 06:30:20 PM suerahn And some residents may be allergic or afraid
2018-05-17 06:30:20 PM kathyhughes So we would find someone to bring the dog in each day
2018-05-17 06:30:22 PM melissaz ah ok, that makes sense susankent.
2018-05-17 06:30:24 PM susankent I would love to have a facility dog I think that would be wonderful but unfortunately that is definitely not in my future for our residient unless I buy the facility
2018-05-17 06:30:31 PM tknox23508 i understand but they are willing to take that on
2018-05-17 06:30:38 PM tonjaboyd yes
2018-05-17 06:31:34 PM kathyhughes we actually used FurReal pets....and some of the residents enjoyed them
2018-05-17 06:31:43 PM kathyhughes Also look for Pet Partners
2018-05-17 06:31:46 PM melissaz I would rather get a dog myself and bring it in to work than try for a facility dog. Like Kathy said the dog would work 24/7 but who would take care of the dog?
2018-05-17 06:31:58 PM melissaz Therapy Dog International is amazing.
2018-05-17 06:32:02 PM suerahn Does anyone have a fish tank. The residents absolutely love it
2018-05-17 06:32:11 PM tonjaboyd We also have fish and I asked if we could get love birds its still up in the air
2018-05-17 06:32:15 PM melissaz No fish tank, but we have birds.
2018-05-17 06:32:19 PM tknox23508 we gave a furreal cat to one of our residents she loves it
2018-05-17 06:32:26 PM tknox23508 we use to
2018-05-17 06:32:35 PM melissaz Birds are hard to do unless the person taking care of the birds is a bird person and understands them.
2018-05-17 06:32:35 PM suerahn I asked for birds but the Doctor that comes said no
2018-05-17 06:32:40 PM tknox23508 cleaning that fish tank was a task
2018-05-17 06:32:41 PM rbudd we have a fish tank
2018-05-17 06:33:03 PM melissaz freshwater or saltwater tank?
2018-05-17 06:33:17 PM kathyhughes We had a company come in once a week to atend to the fish
2018-05-17 06:33:17 PM rbudd we have a company that comes in to clean it
2018-05-17 06:33:17 PM tknox23508 we have a fish tank in our memory support that we dont have to clean we use to have one on our assisted living unit
2018-05-17 06:33:22 PM susankent Kathy I emailed you a couple of weeks ago regarding homework that I was not credited (week 2, written 1)I know you're busy but I have not received as yet and I did not see a reply. sorry to bother you
2018-05-17 06:33:30 PM tonjaboyd We would have someone come in and take care of them
2018-05-17 06:33:34 PM priscillad We use to have a fish tank with the type of residents we have, theywere tampering with the fish and we were buying fish weekly
2018-05-17 06:33:39 PM suerahn I really never have to clean it since we have a sucker fish. It takes care of it
2018-05-17 06:33:49 PM kathyhughes Susan...email me again and I will check tomorrow
2018-05-17 06:34:01 PM susankent thank you
2018-05-17 06:34:47 PM kathyhughes you are welcome
2018-05-17 06:35:06 PM kathyhughes What are you all planning for Memorial Day?
2018-05-17 06:35:52 PM melissaz bombpop social with reminicsing for those we have lost and music
2018-05-17 06:36:07 PM suerahn We will do a little program and have refreshments
2018-05-17 06:36:20 PM tonjaboyd We also have a red fox that has pups every spring in our barn behind the building no is aloud back there
2018-05-17 06:36:25 PM priscillad We are having a memorial ceremony with our local veterans biker club then having ice cream n watermelon

2018-05-17 06:36:33 PM tknox23508 we have a program a cookout then a band
2018-05-17 06:36:36 PM suerahn Our residents focus right now is to get outdoors so if it is nice we will take them out
2018-05-17 06:36:38 PM melissaz Nice!
2018-05-17 06:36:40 PM rbudd BBQ, Ice cream social with entertainment
2018-05-17 06:36:45 PM amberrwetherill We are planning a little social and having a bbq.
2018-05-17 06:37:01 PM kathyhughes You will do fine Susan do not worry about ti
2018-05-17 06:37:41 PM kathyhughes We had a big map and would place the residents picture where they served and the year
2018-05-17 06:37:46 PM karencurtis ill be hosting our Jananese exchange volunteers students and teaching them the meaning of Memorial Day. Then we'll be making red, white, and blue dessert in mason jars.
2018-05-17 06:37:57 PM kathyhughes everyone got interested in it
2018-05-17 06:38:00 PM susankent we are have ROTC perform flag ceremony for our veterans and afternoon karaokee. we now have only four veterans in house.
2018-05-17 06:38:25 PM priscillad good idea Kathy. I like that
2018-05-17 06:38:44 PM karencurtis i like the map idea
2018-05-17 06:38:52 PM priscillad my residents would like tht
2018-05-17 06:39:07 PM michellelheldt i like the map idea
2018-05-17 06:39:22 PM suerahn We did the map thing with where residents and staff were from. It was great
2018-05-17 06:39:24 PM kathyhughes We also used the map in the summer and encouraged people to send post cards to the residents and we would hang them around the map with a string to where the postcard was from
2018-05-17 06:39:35 PM susankent Our facility doesn't allow anyone under 18 to participate at our facility. next year we hope we can get our clinical volunteers back but only if they are drug tested before hand.
2018-05-17 06:39:37 PM tknox23508 thats a good idea
2018-05-17 06:39:55 PM tonjaboyd That sounds fun
2018-05-17 06:40:07 PM amberrwetherill I like that
2018-05-17 06:40:26 PM kathyhughes Everyone got into it...it was up all summer
2018-05-17 06:40:43 PM susankent sue and kathy those are both great ideas. that may be something I can get my residents involved with
2018-05-17 06:40:49 PM karencurtis susan: the volunteers from Japan that we have come in are college sophomores here to learn Engish and Americal culture, so theyre over 18. Maybe try a school like that
2018-05-17 06:41:09 PM suerahn Did anyone do the Life storys theme this week
2018-05-17 06:41:20 PM karencurtis no, whats that
2018-05-17 06:41:35 PM tonjaboyd no?
2018-05-17 06:41:37 PM melissaz tell us about it
2018-05-17 06:41:52 PM suerahn I wasnt too sure how it would go but the residents really got into it.
2018-05-17 06:42:12 PM michellelheldt do tell what is it
2018-05-17 06:42:21 PM tknox23508 no do tell
2018-05-17 06:42:22 PM suerahn It was all about there life story and we had all kinds of activities about it
2018-05-17 06:42:31 PM karencurtis such as?
2018-05-17 06:42:51 PM susankent karen they would still have to have background and drug test which in my facility it at a freeze per corporate. i can't bring in anyone at this time per corporate.
2018-05-17 06:43:01 PM suerahn they did collages, wrote about their lives in a story format
2018-05-17 06:43:11 PM kathyhughes http://lifestories.com/
2018-05-17 06:43:15 PM priscillad nice sue
2018-05-17 06:43:20 PM karencurtis susan, that stinks. residents love these ladies!
2018-05-17 06:43:39 PM karencurtis thanks kathy, ill look into that
2018-05-17 06:43:58 PM melissaz thanks Kathy
2018-05-17 06:44:04 PM kathyhughes you are welcome
2018-05-17 06:44:09 PM suerahn we had a pj party and threw a ball around with questions that asked about their lives. They had so much fun
2018-05-17 06:44:44 PM suerahn I really didnt know if it was going to be a success but I was surprised
2018-05-17 06:44:48 PM karencurtis sounds like fun
2018-05-17 06:44:58 PM susankent I was able to sneak in the VFW auxilary because I use them for my karaokee and they come as a group so I could bypass the red tape on that one. until they find out atleast i have a little bit of new faces.
2018-05-17 06:45:05 PM priscillad you did good, sue
2018-05-17 06:45:26 PM tonjaboyd sounds good sue!!!
