2014-02-18 07:10:05 PM aferguson I need more qualified folks in my activities dept-what types of education and background do most of you all work with for activity aides-all of mine are CNA's with little to no other education. I would prefer rec therapists, activity professionals, occupational art music or dance therapists-its a matter of budget apparently-just wondering

2014-02-18 07:12:44 PM aferguson well, I need advice because this is a nursing driven facility-everyone has to be a CNA if not more including myself-yet the skills for an activity professional are more broad as you all know-I need someone (if you all want to come to Alaska) with apparently a mininum of a CNA, but a rec, or creeative arts thearpy background preferred
2014-02-18 07:13:09 PM aferguson advocating for budgeting the right pay-aide right now is hourly at 15.00 or so with great benefits

2014-02-18 07:22:50 PM ltimlin Yeah, it would be a hard change , but the residents all would love for me to be director.
2014-02-18 07:23:02 PM angiepena I thinks its because alot of baby boomers are getting old and the the specialty Alzhemers and Dementia are opening up like crazy
2014-02-18 07:23:03 PM kakimatheson dallas suburbs depend on company and qualifications--I made $12 assisted living with a huge company, 16 with same qualifications with smaller company.
2014-02-18 07:23:10 PM lizkanderson kathy, are there regulations regarding staff to resident ratio in Activities?
2014-02-18 07:23:20 PM angiepena the place I am going to work is going to open up 5 within the next three years
2014-02-18 07:23:22 PM kathyhughes there are no regs for staffing
2014-02-18 07:23:24 PM sbond108 I believe there is a state reg that says what the staff to resident ratio id
2014-02-18 07:23:25 PM duresaw I am an assistant and sometimes work as a cna and fill in for my boss and I do more work than her
2014-02-18 07:23:26 PM kc13 on fridays when i was in training we would both be here and things were sooooo much better
2014-02-18 07:23:30 PM ltimlin kc13 - just you and a part timer? That stinks

2014-02-18 07:23:41 PM ltimlin Must be hard for vacations and sick days
2014-02-18 07:23:44 PM sbond108 unless i read it incorrectly - which would be more then liekly
2014-02-18 07:23:55 PM tonyap1 I am the only one and there are 90 door knobs in our community
2014-02-18 07:23:59 PM kathyhughes I would find out the staffing in other facilities around you
2014-02-18 07:24:06 PM nancy623 staffing must go budget?
2014-02-18 07:24:15 PM heathereubanks wow tony, you are busy!
2014-02-18 07:24:15 PM danac enter the chat room
2014-02-18 07:24:17 PM kathyhughes and the state
2014-02-18 07:24:18 PM angiepena tonyap1 that is alot for only you
2014-02-18 07:24:21 PM lizkanderson it's a really huge range. depends on how "rich" the facility is
2014-02-18 07:24:21 PM tonyap1 my aide cover when i am out
2014-02-18 07:24:22 PM tricia4 Our ratios kick in when we take residents off the secure unit.
2014-02-18 07:24:34 PM kc13 geez
2014-02-18 07:24:37 PM tonyap1 talk about running my hinney off

2014-02-18 07:24:42 PM duresaw we are always short so I have to fill in for CNAs most of the time...poor staffing
2014-02-18 07:24:43 PM lizkanderson We have 3 full time, me, and 220 beds
2014-02-18 07:24:44 PM kc13 you are super busy

2014-02-18 07:25:05 PM kc13 yea im usually cna/activitiers
2014-02-18 07:25:05 PM kathyhughes which is why I ask you to network with other activity professionals in the area
2014-02-18 07:25:05 PM tonyap1 yes and then with classes it keeps me tired all the time
2014-02-18 07:25:09 PM danac something is wrong with my computer sorry kathy
2014-02-18 07:25:09 PM kc13 -r
2014-02-18 07:25:12 PM sbond108 We have ADC , me, and 4 regular staff in a 210 building
2014-02-18 07:25:13 PM kakimatheson I direct 120 beds, 26 on a secure unit. Have one parttime assistant. Sometimes I feel underwater.
2014-02-18 07:25:16 PM duresaw Kathy, where do we take the state exam?
2014-02-18 07:25:17 PM kathyhughes and Yes Janice the final is online
2014-02-18 07:25:18 PM aferguson How can I build it so I have more hands on deck? I have tried building volunteer route but we are affiliated with a hospital so that dictates a lot what volunteering looks like. I feel we need at least 5 in activities, we have 2 most days, one who is devoted to our dementia care unit and end of life area and acts as another CNA rather than doing activities, so I have a long road ahead of me in advocacy for what we do
2014-02-18 07:25:18 PM tonyap1 but it wont last forever
2014-02-18 07:25:24 PM janice13 thanks
2014-02-18 07:25:27 PM bdappert left the chat room
2014-02-18 07:25:30 PM bwesterman my Activity Director is moving to a smaller place and she will have 3 others under her just for acticities, wher I work it's only going to be me and my assassistant
2014-02-18 07:25:45 PM kc13 yea
2014-02-18 07:25:47 PM danac we have me the ad and 10 aides
2014-02-18 07:25:50 PM lindayoung1964 2 HOURS TO TAKE IT AND ONE CHANCE TO PASS IT?
2014-02-18 07:26:01 PM brendamcd thats all we have is 2 in activities
2014-02-18 07:26:02 PM angiepena I am staying at the small private one. they are very generous and the benefits are awesome
2014-02-18 07:26:02 PM janice13 you can make it work start building up your volunteers and families
2014-02-18 07:26:05 PM tonyap1 maybe some day i will get an assistant
2014-02-18 07:26:08 PM lizkanderson yes, the other facilities I've networked with vary widely in size and format, so it's been enlightening, but not helpful as far as advocating for needing more staff.
2014-02-18 07:26:18 PM sbond108 Linda if you do the reading ( and its open book) you will be fine
2014-02-18 07:26:21 PM duresaw you don't have volunteers?
2014-02-18 07:26:27 PM kathyhughes You have to start by teaching others about activities

2014-02-18 07:27:42 PM tonyap1 just started there
2014-02-18 07:27:42 PM lizkanderson agreed Linda re: older volunteers
2014-02-18 07:27:44 PM angiepena I also volunteer at the senior center and I have 5 of the ladies that come out once a week to help me. and I have a family that donated a piano and they come out on Sundays for church and sing for the residents on their donated piano
2014-02-18 07:27:44 PM bwesterman where do we take the STATE exam?
