2013-02-25 07:04:39 PM angi55 No problem richardson. i wish i was already working in this field, but am working with an awesome practicum advisor. He is helping alot
2013-02-25 07:04:43 PM karynbrinkley I tried to complete at least one a week and that will really help.
2013-02-25 07:05:14 PM jblackmon enter the chat room
2013-02-25 07:05:14 PM karynbrinkley Yes, you are over thinking it. Believe me, I am type A. It is so much easier than we think.
2013-02-25 07:05:22 PM dtkimble I am going to kick it up this week.
2013-02-25 07:05:22 PM angi55 i have tried to email kathy but with no response. Any suggestions on how to get her
2013-02-25 07:06:14 PM karynbrinkley I can let her know. I get any where from 40 - 80 emails a day so I have no clue how many she gets. You can email me if you need help during the week.
2013-02-25 07:06:37 PM karynbrinkley I am writing down attendance so keep chatting.
2013-02-25 07:06:39 PM richardsonl The reason I am asking about volunteers is many of my residents are requesting to have amonte carlo night and it will take several people to run the games, as well as escort residents to the program.
2013-02-25 07:06:47 PM angi55 I just needed to let her know I am trying and that I also have had trouble opening files
2013-02-25 07:06:51 PM angel4aml18 at first I look at the assignments and freak out thinking they are really hard but then I re-read them and they are not as bad as the seem at first
2013-02-25 07:07:02 PM karynbrinkley Family memebers may help with that too, Linda.
2013-02-25 07:07:27 PM dtkimble Karyn, you work in the Assisted Living Program. I have several residents who just don't want to participate in anything. One on ones are difficult with some residents.
2013-02-25 07:07:39 PM karynbrinkley Angie, I will email he when we are finished here. No worries! As long as you get everything done by the end of the course.
2013-02-25 07:07:50 PM angi55 I agree. Family members are big helps. Make flyers and ask for help. I bet you will get it
2013-02-25 07:07:53 PM smmbruin10 Hi Karyn, there are a few of us on the ALF chatroom. Should we all move over to Open Discussion?
2013-02-25 07:07:53 PM angel4aml18 richardsonl - would other staff in the facility be willing to help out? we send out emails when we have big events and suaully get a lot of help from administration
2013-02-25 07:08:14 PM dtkimble seems like mealtimes are just about all the socialization that they want.
2013-02-25 07:08:15 PM karynbrinkley I think that's a good idea Angie.
2013-02-25 07:08:20 PM jblackmon Hi, my name is Juana MEPAPII
2013-02-25 07:08:31 PM karynbrinkley I work in Assisted Living and it can be a challenge to get them out.
2013-02-25 07:08:47 PM angi55 i plan to get caught up this week and then take it one week at a time
2013-02-25 07:08:49 PM dtkimble Richardson...we had a casino day and historically the management staff help out. It turns into a fun time!
2013-02-25 07:08:54 PM richardsonl Yes, other staff will help out. I am very new to this facility, I have worked in other facilities and always had lots of volunteers. I am hoping to build a rapport with families and staff.
2013-02-25 07:09:11 PM richardsonl Thanks DTKIMBLE
2013-02-25 07:09:16 PM smmbruin10 Hi Karyn, there are a few of us on the ALF chatroom. Should we all move over to Open Discussion?
2013-02-25 07:09:19 PM angi55 I believe staff will love to help
2013-02-25 07:09:30 PM dtkimble The regulations are a bit different in the ALP aren't they?
2013-02-25 07:09:42 PM bhanson Hello, Karyn! I was in the AL Chat Room.
2013-02-25 07:09:52 PM dtkimble I know in the SNF we try all types of engagements.
2013-02-25 07:09:54 PM karynbrinkley As far as AL, I try to question why they are not participating. Sometimes they are nervous. Other times, we need to offer more acticvities geared towards them.
2013-02-25 07:09:59 PM karynbrinkley Hi Booke
2013-02-25 07:10:08 PM karynbrinkley Sometimes they are embarrassed.
2013-02-25 07:10:30 PM richardsonl I know regulations differ from nursing facility to assisted living, in PA there are two different regulation organizations, IS it like that in other states too?
2013-02-25 07:10:30 PM karynbrinkley They have more of a filter and are a higher cognitive level than a memory care and even a skilled unit.
2013-02-25 07:10:42 PM angi55 I guess printing off everything and making a good binder will provide a good resource in my career
2013-02-25 07:10:50 PM karynbrinkley What kinds of activities do you offer?
2013-02-25 07:10:54 PM karynbrinkley It does Angie.
2013-02-25 07:11:16 PM dtkimble I began working in the Assisted Living. I loved it! There were some that enjoyed the personal visits...some just can't be bothered. You never want to push.
2013-02-25 07:11:22 PM karynbrinkley What do you think would help to get AL residents invloved? We have to remind them for sure.
2013-02-25 07:11:33 PM angi55 Does this count as a mandatory chat or strictly extra credit
2013-02-25 07:11:34 PM coachlcs73 Hello I have a question- what are the parameters whne deciding to move from ALF to nursing home or snu
2013-02-25 07:11:58 PM karynbrinkley That's right Dawn but it is worth investigating just in case there is another reason they are not participating.
2013-02-25 07:11:59 PM richardsonl What about offering activities thatgive the residents a purpose. Or something they can take ownership of? would that help
2013-02-25 07:12:10 PM coachlcs73 Hi DTKimble!
2013-02-25 07:12:34 PM babieofseven enter the chat room
2013-02-25 07:12:47 PM angi55 I believe there is so much more that can be done in activities in an assisted living. How many residents are we talking here?
2013-02-25 07:12:55 PM karynbrinkley Give me your names if you just joined so you can get credit?
2013-02-25 07:12:59 PM dtkimble I offer luncheons and dinner parties as mixers. In our facility we have 4 cottages of assisted living residents. I will try different combinations of residents
2013-02-25 07:13:05 PM smmbruin10 Stephanie Moran

2013-02-25 07:14:17 PM richardsonl I knew an art therapist Leah Jones from Pennsylvania
2013-02-25 07:14:18 PM bhanson Did they change the format of the chat?
2013-02-25 07:14:24 PM bhanson It looks different from last time
2013-02-25 07:14:28 PM karynbrinkley They did. It is weird to me.
2013-02-25 07:14:31 PM 131570 Oh thats strange
2013-02-25 07:14:35 PM angi55 I am in northeast texas. Just wondered if I had any neighbors here
2013-02-25 07:14:40 PM 131570 I went to school for art therapy here in wi
2013-02-25 07:14:53 PM richardsonl That is strange

2013-02-25 07:15:28 PM dtkimble I am so glad I am not the only one!
2013-02-25 07:15:29 PM richardsonl I am beyond therapy
2013-02-25 07:15:37 PM karynbrinkley If you don't see your extra credit for the chat, please let me know. I email a list to Kathy after the chat each time
2013-02-25 07:15:55 PM karynbrinkley So, let's talk about what you are planning for March.
2013-02-25 07:16:07 PM angi55 still not sure if this counts as one of my 5 mandatory chats
2013-02-25 07:16:16 PM karynbrinkley St. Patricks Day and Easter
2013-02-25 07:16:16 PM bhanson St. Patrick's Day parties!
2013-02-25 07:16:20 PM karynbrinkley It does Angie
2013-02-25 07:16:33 PM 131570 Yep. St. Patrick's and Easter
2013-02-25 07:16:38 PM karynbrinkley What kind of party Brooke
2013-02-25 07:16:39 PM richardsonl Since I am fairly new to the facility. I wanted to start a travelog and travel to different places of the world. Obviously, I am starting with Ireland.
2013-02-25 07:16:43 PM 131570 We will have Irish dance for entertainment
2013-02-25 07:16:51 PM angi55 Thank you. We are doing an egg hunt with residents, families, and staff children
2013-02-25 07:16:58 PM dtkimble I used to live beyond Hope...a small village in NJ!
2013-02-25 07:17:03 PM karynbrinkley That's cool Linda. Like Arm chair travel.
2013-02-25 07:17:05 PM smmbruin10 Irish songs sing-along
2013-02-25 07:17:14 PM 131570 Egg hunt is a cute idea
2013-02-25 07:17:24 PM karynbrinkley Egg hunts are cool. Are the residents dying the eggs?
2013-02-25 07:17:30 PM richardsonl I used to do an adapted version of this at an adutl day program.
2013-02-25 07:17:32 PM angi55 We need to get someone to dress as the Easter bunny
2013-02-25 07:17:35 PM karynbrinkley They can also stuff candy in eggs.
2013-02-25 07:17:41 PM 131570 We will be dying easter eggs as well
2013-02-25 07:17:46 PM bhanson We are having an Irish themed dinner party in all units of the building including Independent Living .. all of the AD's are going to dress up and go around to each area while the residents are eating to visit/chat.
2013-02-25 07:17:48 PM smmbruin10 Making flowers from painted doilies for start of Spring
2013-02-25 07:17:49 PM karynbrinkley The easter bunny is a great idea.
2013-02-25 07:18:02 PM angi55 I will suggest to my practicum advisor. I will help them dye eggs . That would be fun
2013-02-25 07:18:07 PM karynbrinkley Love it Brooke
2013-02-25 07:18:32 PM 131570 Easter bunny would be alot of fun...we have a Santa hand out gifts every christmas
2013-02-25 07:18:35 PM angi55 Not sure what he has planned for March and St. patricks day. I have not seen the calendar
2013-02-25 07:19:03 PM dtkimble We play a little game with the children. This month it will be "Pass the shamrock". The kids will sit in a circle with the residents. The music starts and stops like musical chairs. whoever is holding the shamrock will get a package of fruit snacks at the end.
2013-02-25 07:19:12 PM karynbrinkley Just don't use chocolate if you stuff plastic eggs. It melted on us.
2013-02-25 07:19:18 PM karynbrinkley Like to doile idea too
2013-02-25 07:19:20 PM angel4aml18 we are celebrating national nurtition month with a presentation on healthy eating by our dietician with fun apple smiles for refreshments
2013-02-25 07:19:21 PM dtkimble The kids and residents love this game.
2013-02-25 07:19:34 PM bhanson I like that idea!
2013-02-25 07:19:38 PM richardsonl I wanted to try adapting pysanki (SP) eggs with the residents. Could I use wooden eggs, I wonder
2013-02-25 07:19:38 PM karynbrinkley That's neet ....like hot potato
2013-02-25 07:20:02 PM karynbrinkley but you win if you end up with the shamrock...
2013-02-25 07:20:03 PM coachlcs73 Karyn please tell me how do you decide when to move from ALF to a SNU
2013-02-25 07:20:05 PM angi55 What do you suggest for our alzheimers unit for Easter activities
2013-02-25 07:20:07 PM karynbrinkley much more positive
2013-02-25 07:20:20 PM richardsonl I was wondering about decorating eggs (Pysanki) (SP) using wooden eggs instead of blowing out the inners of a real egg
2013-02-25 07:20:32 PM bhanson How about having the residents make Easter baskets for family?
2013-02-25 07:20:32 PM 131570 the healthy eating presentation is a good idea too. We just recently had our dieticians do a similar presentation and we are trying to form it into a weekly activity for a "healthier lifestyle"
2013-02-25 07:20:35 PM karynbrinkley I love the healthy eating idea. Our residents eats so much junk... lol!
2013-02-25 07:20:45 PM dtkimble We have "choose to lose" at our facility. I think I will have to drop out as I am a stress eater...
2013-02-25 07:21:20 PM richardsonl How do present healthier eating, when there is a demnad for junk food
2013-02-25 07:21:28 PM angel4aml18 I am also having residents work on a no-sew blanket to present to our social worker for National Socail Work Month as the theme is something about the threads....
2013-02-25 07:22:13 PM richardsonl Of course, Im the queen of junk food junk
2013-02-25 07:22:18 PM angi55 We are going to incorporate mens groups and ladies groups soon. I bet the ladies would love to work on blankets
2013-02-25 07:22:33 PM dtkimble you can blow up a balloon and tie string around it. glue it and let it dry. Pop the balloon and cut out a section, put grass and treats in it....very cute
2013-02-25 07:22:34 PM karynbrinkley Well, it really depends on the facility but most of the time you have to be able to do most of your ADL's. The aides assist you but are not suppose to feed or lift you. You can go on hospice and remain in an Assisted Living. hospice doesn't mean end of life any more. Does anybody else have anything to say about this.
2013-02-25 07:22:45 PM 131570 We are doing something similar, but it is a quilt and everyone does a square.
2013-02-25 07:22:55 PM angel4aml18 our dietician is going to stree the suggested servings...it is easier in our unit as dietary provides all meals so residents do not get out to purchase many snacks on their own so they rely on bingo prizes and family. i try to make bingo prizes less candy centered and more packs of crackers, cookies...
2013-02-25 07:23:00 PM richardsonl The blankets are a nice idea. You can get fleece and have the ladies make now ser scarves in the winter
2013-02-25 07:23:06 PM smmbruin10 @Angi55: last year in our Alzheimer's Unit, we made bunny cups to hold each of their eggs, and we displayed them around our activity space. You just use white foam cups, construction paper for the ears, googley eyes, pipe cleaners for the whiskers, and mini-pom poms for the nose.
2013-02-25 07:23:14 PM angi55 I spend 2 hours a day in a nursing home. I try to reach the residents who do not come of their rooms much. Any suggestions on activities they can do to keep from being bored
2013-02-25 07:23:44 PM bhanson How about hand massages for your residents in Skilled Nursing? Our residents love that!
2013-02-25 07:23:48 PM angi55 Bunny cups is a very cute idea.
2013-02-25 07:23:56 PM bhanson And it's a good way to chat and get to know them.
2013-02-25 07:24:06 PM angel4aml18 I am in a snf and have had many residents actually come off of hospice as they do not qualify anymore so it definitely doesn't mean end of life!
2013-02-25 07:24:14 PM babieofseven word find, cards crossword puzzles, puzzles that some that I used for my people who wouldn't come out of there rooms
2013-02-25 07:24:15 PM 131570 Hand massages are always great, our residents really enjoy it.
2013-02-25 07:24:30 PM karynbrinkley You can take a library cart around, cross words, seek and finds, deliver magazines, a cd player with music, hand massages, nail polish change, mini muffin maker for in room baking.
2013-02-25 07:24:32 PM richardsonl Angi55, I use humor if I can. fo rthe ladies, I will do their nails. read, engage in room activities. I challnge the men to play connect four in their rooms
2013-02-25 07:24:36 PM dtkimble we were doing hand massages and then found out that some were allergic to the lovely scented ones.
2013-02-25 07:24:48 PM angi55 I do nails once a week for the ladies and I did a quick hand massage with lotion. They love it. I am also bringing in nature sounds cds to listen to next time to give them that spa feeling
2013-02-25 07:24:58 PM karynbrinkley That's right Angie. If they get therapy they can't be on hospice either.
2013-02-25 07:25:15 PM bhanson That's a great idea to add the nature sounds for music therapy and relaxation.
2013-02-25 07:25:15 PM angel4aml18 angi55 we do hand massages, read poems or prayers, take one of our kits to let residents look through and reminisce...it really depends on the resident's background and what they like to talk about or if they are more lower functioning then we focus on sensory activities for visits
2013-02-25 07:25:42 PM jblackmon I think if you want you can serve green salas for regular diets steem green vegetablefor in between diets and avocado salad for the puree ones.
2013-02-25 07:25:49 PM babieofseven the love to show family pictures and talk about them
2013-02-25 07:25:55 PM angi55 I sort of feel limited in a nursing home, My dream is to work in an assisted living eventually
2013-02-25 07:26:10 PM bhanson Yes, they do @babieofseven
2013-02-25 07:26:10 PM karynbrinkley Why do you feel limited?
2013-02-25 07:26:16 PM dtkimble I am wondering if an Activity Director will have the time and opportunity to spend quality time with the residents? I had a great time as an activity aide
2013-02-25 07:26:21 PM angi55 I want to make scrapbooks of the events. I think they would enjoy that
2013-02-25 07:26:48 PM karynbrinkley You will have time if you delegate and find some great volunteers.
2013-02-25 07:26:54 PM richardsonl I am learning as an activity director that I have to make time to be with the residents. I have to prioritize . . .
2013-02-25 07:27:02 PM dtkimble We do have awesome volunteers.....
2013-02-25 07:27:09 PM angi55 i do not see our activity director having time to reach all of the residents on a regular basis. That is is why I want to do this while I am in training
2013-02-25 07:27:45 PM dtkimble I am trying to make the time and keep involved. I believe that will be a part of continuing a successful program.
2013-02-25 07:27:57 PM karynbrinkley I guess it depends on how large the facility is Angie. I think you can do it.
2013-02-25 07:27:59 PM babieofseven That is one thing my residents didn't like when I went from assistant to director that they never got to see me much anymore
2013-02-25 07:28:03 PM angi55 I want to work in a smaller facility as well soI can really know my residents better
2013-02-25 07:28:06 PM coachlcs73 And keeping yourself grounded
2013-02-25 07:28:18 PM dtkimble I loved the greenhouse program
2013-02-25 07:28:26 PM richardsonl Im finding as a director that It is hard
2013-02-25 07:28:35 PM angi55 Greenhouse is extremely awesome
2013-02-25 07:28:40 PM 131570 Yes, I work in a small 50 person facility and it is nice to get to know everyone
2013-02-25 07:28:46 PM karynbrinkley How many residnets do you have Linda?
2013-02-25 07:29:02 PM babieofseven Being a director is very hard but rewarding at the same time
2013-02-25 07:29:05 PM richardsonl I have 126 in skilled nursing and 117 in assisted living
2013-02-25 07:29:06 PM 131570 I also really liked the greenhouse program
2013-02-25 07:29:06 PM dtkimble our facility is based on that idea of having 12 residents in a cottage. Four cottages in each unit
2013-02-25 07:29:07 PM angi55 Maybe our AD can get some good volunteers before I leave. He is fairlly new to this facility
2013-02-25 07:29:14 PM coachlcs73 I work in a 12 bed ICF I know my residents better than my own family
2013-02-25 07:29:17 PM smmbruin10 Do any of you have activity ideas for high functioning residents with Macular Degeneration?
2013-02-25 07:29:21 PM karynbrinkley Wow, that is big! How many assistants?
2013-02-25 07:29:49 PM dtkimble there are audio books
2013-02-25 07:29:58 PM richardsonl 3 full-time and 2 part-time and 1 casual
2013-02-25 07:30:22 PM dtkimble music appreciation, reading to residents
2013-02-25 07:30:24 PM angi55 I wish I could get hired as an assistant for now. He has over 80 residents. Do you think we could benefit from an assistant?
2013-02-25 07:30:33 PM karynbrinkley Audio books are great, porch socials, music
2013-02-25 07:30:47 PM richardsonl The assistants are the back bone of the program.
2013-02-25 07:31:11 PM dtkimble Karyn, are you an Assisted Living Manager?
2013-02-25 07:31:24 PM angi55 How would you go about asking the administrator to hire an assistant? what are the qualifications
2013-02-25 07:31:41 PM richardsonl What type of settings do others work in?
2013-02-25 07:31:53 PM karynbrinkley Linda, I would really try to get some volunteers and interns. They can run lots of activities while it frees you to do other things. Do you lead activities or are you doing the paper work and planning?

2013-02-25 07:32:24 PM smmbruin10 I'm in Independent/Assited Living. We have a memory care program for residents with MCI. That where I work.
2013-02-25 07:32:25 PM dtkimble Several of our volunteers have had loved ones that were in the facility.
2013-02-25 07:32:35 PM coachlcs73 left the chat room
2013-02-25 07:32:52 PM richardsonl Both, but the assistants help me. It is kinda strange, I have always directed dual programs
2013-02-25 07:32:56 PM 131570 I work in a facility where one floor is long term nursing home and the other floor is primarily rehabilitation residents
2013-02-25 07:33:01 PM karynbrinkley I actually work in Assited Living, Skilled (Long Term and rehab), and Memory Care. I am the Assisted Living Consultant for NCCAP.

2013-02-25 07:33:22 PM jblackmon does any body know where to get or recuit volunteers?
2013-02-25 07:33:46 PM richardsonl Someone earlier suggested familes, schools
2013-02-25 07:33:48 PM dtkimble Do you have wives of loved ones that visit?
2013-02-25 07:33:50 PM richardsonl and staff
2013-02-25 07:33:53 PM babieofseven family members, girl/boys clubs, church
2013-02-25 07:34:06 PM bhanson Local high schools
2013-02-25 07:34:07 PM karynbrinkley You can set up at a job fair at a local college. they will put you on their website. We got 13 this month alone.
2013-02-25 07:34:20 PM angi55 Hospice is a good place to find volunteers
2013-02-25 07:34:27 PM smmbruin10 Craigslist can be a great resource
2013-02-25 07:34:30 PM richardsonl I never thought about Hopisce
2013-02-25 07:34:40 PM karynbrinkley High Schools are goo as well. You have to watch them a lottle more and not let them handle any patient care.
2013-02-25 07:34:45 PM angi55 They love the residents and can use the PR
2013-02-25 07:34:45 PM karynbrinkley good
2013-02-25 07:34:47 PM jblackmon mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. we sometimes get some but they only last a few time.
2013-02-25 07:34:49 PM dtkimble guidance depts. at high schools are good. Kids think if they volunteer they will have the opportunity for hire.
2013-02-25 07:35:15 PM jblackmon How to keep them interested.
2013-02-25 07:35:16 PM dtkimble some of our best employees began by volunteering.
2013-02-25 07:35:17 PM karynbrinkley Churches are great! We do a drug screen, PPD, and a background check.
2013-02-25 07:35:22 PM angi55 I was a teenage volunteer years ago. It was an incredible experience but it is not for everyone
2013-02-25 07:35:45 PM angi55 If they are doing from the heart they will stay interested
2013-02-25 07:35:47 PM smmbruin10 At my old facility, we used to post on Craigslist for volunteers. You'd obviously have to do very thorough screenings.
2013-02-25 07:35:55 PM 131570 our company has a great volunteer program and volunteen...so we get a high school student pretty much every day in the summer
2013-02-25 07:35:56 PM karynbrinkley Our volunteers work on our calendars, print flyers, lead activities, etc...
2013-02-25 07:36:02 PM babieofseven I found church to be the best place to get them
2013-02-25 07:36:18 PM angi55 Be careful using the internet.
2013-02-25 07:36:23 PM richardsonl I used to have volunteers where i worked at before, they were a great help with outings.

2013-02-25 07:36:57 PM richardsonl Where are yo ugoing
2013-02-25 07:37:08 PM babieofseven Real Estate companies are always looking for a place to do things for people too
2013-02-25 07:37:12 PM dtkimble They have to go through our lengthy application process but they wind up learning while earning credits
2013-02-25 07:37:14 PM smmbruin10 of course you have to be cautious with the internet, but you can find some great resources once in while.
2013-02-25 07:37:21 PM angi55 A mexican restaurant. One elderly man said I am his date. How cute
2013-02-25 07:37:24 PM jblackmon so do ours but most of the time young kids want to just linger arund. don't even ask what to do!

2013-02-25 07:37:46 PM karynbrinkley Family members are great too. Tell the Family Council president that you need some volunteers. They may come in and call Bingo,etc...
2013-02-25 07:38:17 PM richardsonl I'll have to try the real estate companies
2013-02-25 07:38:35 PM karynbrinkley I make a schedule for the kids and assign them to an activity assistant. They stay with them all day and assisted them with activities.
2013-02-25 07:38:42 PM babieofseven I use to work in title insurance and the realtor's are always looking to volunteer or know someone that wants to
2013-02-25 07:38:46 PM smmbruin10 Posting at local colleges/universitites. Many courses require "field work." It would be good to target schools that you know have a gerontology program.
2013-02-25 07:38:50 PM richardsonl I will need to get off soon as my son has to use the computer for homework
2013-02-25 07:39:04 PM karynbrinkley They have to have about 290 hours before graduating
2013-02-25 07:39:22 PM richardsonl Karyn thank you for your input it was very helpful.
2013-02-25 07:39:22 PM dtkimble How about pet therapy volunteers? The dogs need to go through training.

2013-02-25 07:41:05 PM 131570 We are connected to a program called creature comforts. We get mostly dogs, but many of the residents get so much joy from seeing them
2013-02-25 07:41:05 PM karynbrinkley A reading program is good too. Involving the elders and children.
2013-02-25 07:41:18 PM dtkimble We have a daycare at our facility. We have a good intergenerational program. Win/Win

2013-02-25 07:43:09 PM angi55 Very important to make sure to ask the resients regulary what they want to do and to reach all residents not just your regulars
