Then before we present the those gifts we will watch a video on youtube about veterans day recognition. All the staff and residents are gonna be in the dining area holding up a flag while we present the gifts to our veterans. Then we will have coffee and coockies after the ceremony.

2014-11-06 06:51:09 PM kathyhughes Nope expecting some tomorrow but nothing that will hang around how about you?
2014-11-06 06:51:14 PM anthonyalviar yes the department heads will be serving the family and the residents. and our kitchen department will cook everything from scratch
2014-11-06 06:51:27 PM kathyhughes Thats great Megan!
2014-11-06 06:51:49 PM kathyhughes and good Anthony I am glad that all the staff will be there
2014-11-06 06:52:02 PM debbie134 We had 3 inches, which was way too much for this early in November. It is gone, but it came in with 50 mph winds.
2014-11-06 06:52:34 PM kathyhughes The early stuff doesn't stick around long!
2014-11-06 06:52:34 PM mcagle1 we are doing a traditional thanksgiving dinner for the residents and their families the thursday before thanksgiving
2014-11-06 06:53:01 PM kathyhughes That sounds like a good plan too
2014-11-06 06:53:08 PM debbie134 Thankfully!
2014-11-06 06:53:19 PM kathyhughes making anything interesting for the luncheon or dinner?
2014-11-06 06:53:42 PM debbie134 We are making our own cranberry sauce.
2014-11-06 06:54:08 PM kathyhughes Sounds like a great way to involve the residents
2014-11-06 06:54:35 PM kathyhughes Making the centerpieces?
2014-11-06 06:54:36 PM debbie134 It takes so much sugar. But the residents enjoy making it.
2014-11-06 06:54:42 PM mcagle1 is that hard to do Debbie? we have cooking club twice a month and are always looking for new recipes to try
2014-11-06 06:55:06 PM anthonyalviar The facility will be so full we don't have any room for entertainers. We will present a powerpoint that consist of residents picture and their family.
2014-11-06 06:55:30 PM debbie134 Go to the Ocean Spray website. All types of receipies. Not hard to do, takes a while.

2014-11-06 06:55:55 PM mcagle1 thank you! i will
2014-11-06 06:55:56 PM kathyhughes I like activities that take awhile
2014-11-06 06:56:21 PM mcagle1 me too! i have so much fun with the residents
2014-11-06 06:56:50 PM kathyhughes There are lots of ideas out there for the residents to make for Thanksgiving
2014-11-06 06:57:17 PM kathyhughes and letting everyone share what they are Thankful for can let everyone share
2014-11-06 06:57:19 PM debbie134 Don't we all. I have the residents "test" cranberries. A cranberry is given 7 chances to bounce. If not, it's not Ocean Spray worthy.(I know way too much about cranberries) So we bounce some berries
2014-11-06 06:57:37 PM kathyhughes I like that!
2014-11-06 06:58:05 PM danac enter the chat room
2014-11-06 06:58:10 PM kathyhughes Well cranberries are a great food and bouncing them is fun!

2014-11-06 06:59:34 PM debbie134 In the morning we are watching the Macy's parade and having cofee, tea and of course cranberry bread
2014-11-06 06:59:38 PM kathyhughes I bet that they are! I would let them know that your residents are making their sauce....perhaps they can send someone to help
2014-11-06 06:59:45 PM kathyhughes Hello Lisa
2014-11-06 07:00:05 PM lisaturske Hello!
2014-11-06 07:00:07 PM kathyhughes How are you doing?
2014-11-06 07:00:09 PM danac We have a thanksgiving day social. We make thankful birds where the residents each make a feather and write what they are thankful for on it. we also make pumpkin pie tarts
2014-11-06 07:00:28 PM kathyhughes Sounds like fun
2014-11-06 07:00:46 PM lisaturske Recovering from a root canal, but otherwise ok. LOL!
2014-11-06 07:00:52 PM kathyhughes Oh My
2014-11-06 07:00:56 PM debbie134 They will supply us with free juices and products all the time. It is a collaberative of the growers, and one of the growers lease our land. It is a good relationship.
2014-11-06 07:00:59 PM kathyhughes Hope that you are doing better
2014-11-06 07:01:18 PM mcagle1 pumpkin pie tarts are a huge hit at my facility! we made some last week

2014-11-06 07:01:31 PM lisaturske Thank you! It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. And my gums aren't throbbing anymore. SO all is good. :)
2014-11-06 07:01:36 PM kathyhughes Thats great Debra! I would bet that they appreciate you making their sauce
2014-11-06 07:01:37 PM lizmacinnes Good evening everyone
2014-11-06 07:01:44 PM kathyhughes Hello Elizabeth
2014-11-06 07:01:49 PM danac we made pumpkin cheese cakes last year so I hope this works!
2014-11-06 07:01:49 PM kathyhughes How are you doing
2014-11-06 07:02:01 PM lizmacinnes Hello Kathy. I'm doing well thank you. How about you?
2014-11-06 07:02:08 PM kathyhughes I am doing great
2014-11-06 07:02:15 PM kathyhughes thanks
2014-11-06 07:02:16 PM debbie134 We send pictures of the residents enjoying the products. I keep expecting to see one of my residents in an ad.
2014-11-06 07:02:31 PM kathyhughes They should!
2014-11-06 07:02:58 PM kathyhughes What do you have planned for Thanksgiving with the residents?
2014-11-06 07:03:52 PM lizmacinnes I have a question to anyone that can help me. I have a new resident that is deaf in one ear and has less that 50% of hearing in his other ear. If we aren't doing an activity that is related to a form of exercise I lose him. He goes into his own world. He refuses to wear aids. Any suggestions for activities?
2014-11-06 07:03:53 PM kimleon enter the chat room
2014-11-06 07:04:06 PM lisaturske WE have some trivia, word games, etc leadin up to Thanksgiving day. They kitchen staff is preparing a Thanksgiving meal. We are having a craft workshop and Santa Shop on Black Friday.
2014-11-06 07:04:08 PM debbie134 They do a "tasting panel" and if you are on it, you receive a Home Depot of Dunkin' Donuts gift card for each time you participate. My staff are all signed up and we are saving the cards for use in the department.
2014-11-06 07:04:11 PM kathyhughes Hello Kim
2014-11-06 07:04:34 PM kimleon Hello!
2014-11-06 07:04:52 PM kathyhughes Well Elizabeth what is he interested in?
2014-11-06 07:05:03 PM debbie134 Liz, do you have any hearing amplifiers at your facility? We have had a lot of luck using these in place of hearing aides.
2014-11-06 07:05:05 PM kathyhughes What did he used to like to do
2014-11-06 07:05:19 PM lizmacinnes Cards mostly but with his alzheimer's its more difficult for him now
2014-11-06 07:05:57 PM anthonyalviar I'm planning to do a talent show for our christmas party. Each department will pick residents to perform with them.
2014-11-06 07:06:00 PM kathyhughes Have you tried teaching him to play solitare on the computer?
2014-11-06 07:06:16 PM lizmacinnes Watch TV as well and I have put the cc for hearing impaired but we don;t watch tv much during the day.
2014-11-06 07:06:21 PM kathyhughes Or perhaps play on his own?
2014-11-06 07:07:06 PM kathyhughes I would guess that being in a group program would be hard for him to participate
2014-11-06 07:07:07 PM danac we use chair exercise videos that have people demonstrating the exercies. Would he watch that on tv?
2014-11-06 07:07:40 PM kathyhughes The amplifier just might help too
2014-11-06 07:07:50 PM lizmacinnes We don't have a computer for our residents which I am sad to say. He use to play on his own when he was at home. When I give him cards now he flips trough them for a bit then puts them down. He is such a sweet man.
2014-11-06 07:08:08 PM kimleon On thanksgiving day, dining services will prepare a thanksgiving meal. We have Thanksgiving-themed crafts and games prior to Thanksgiving Day.
2014-11-06 07:08:11 PM lizmacinnes they absolutely are. He falls asleep.
2014-11-06 07:08:15 PM debbie134 Can he read still?
2014-11-06 07:08:15 PM kathyhughes Then what happen to the computer he had?
2014-11-06 07:08:20 PM lisaturske Does he like jigsaw puzzles. We just had a really fun puzzle party the other day. A couple of the participants were really hard of hearing but their vision is good.
2014-11-06 07:08:32 PM lizmacinnes He didn't have one, he used a deck of cards
2014-11-06 07:08:59 PM kathyhughes So perhaps you just need to start him off with the game
2014-11-06 07:09:14 PM debbie134 You might be able to get an older computer donated. It doesn't neeed to be hooked up to the internet.
2014-11-06 07:09:25 PM lizmacinnes I was thinking of paint by numbers since he used to like to paint, but I am afraid of insulting him.
2014-11-06 07:09:30 PM kathyhughes What did he do before when he was younger?
2014-11-06 07:09:50 PM kathyhughes How about just letting him paint
2014-11-06 07:09:53 PM lizmacinnes Worked worked worked and helped his wife raise 5 children
2014-11-06 07:10:06 PM debbie134 What did he do for work?
2014-11-06 07:10:07 PM kathyhughes What did he do for a job?
2014-11-06 07:10:10 PM mcagle1 i know it may vary from state to state but does anyone have any state readiness tips for our department...it isthe activity assistant's first time working in a nursing home and my first time being the director when state is in the building. next week is the last week that they can come before they get fined and im super nervous
2014-11-06 07:10:10 PM danac can you ask his children for ideas about what her liked to do
2014-11-06 07:10:14 PM danac he
2014-11-06 07:10:23 PM lizmacinnes I will try that and I will try the jig saw puzzles too. He worked for New England telephone
2014-11-06 07:10:47 PM debbie134 What did he do for the telphone company?
2014-11-06 07:11:04 PM kathyhughes Oh Megan....don't worry...you are new and they will go easy
2014-11-06 07:11:10 PM anthonyalviar look busy. do karaoke or play family feud
2014-11-06 07:11:16 PM kathyhughes which state Megan?
2014-11-06 07:11:18 PM lizmacinnes well I have, but his daughter who is his HCP is a negative nelly and finds fault with something at our facility everyday.
2014-11-06 07:11:41 PM mcagle1 has you ever been on activityconnection.com liz? i use that all the time
2014-11-06 07:11:43 PM mcagle1 ohio
2014-11-06 07:11:43 PM kathyhughes She is just feeling guilty and taking her guilt out on you all
2014-11-06 07:11:45 PM lizmacinnes He started off at the bottom for the phone company then worked his way up
2014-11-06 07:11:52 PM debbie134 Make sure your calendar and activities match up. If it say 3 p.m. bingo make sure that is what is going on
2014-11-06 07:12:06 PM lizmacinnes Its terrible she keeps telling the nursed what to do and what not to do
2014-11-06 07:12:20 PM danac if he would like a job, how about passing the mail? we have a woman who does that sometimes
2014-11-06 07:12:37 PM kathyhughes I would see if you can find an old telephone and see if he can fix it or tell you about it
2014-11-06 07:12:42 PM lizmacinnes I will try that web site thank you.
2014-11-06 07:12:49 PM debbie134 Liz she may be feeling guilty about placing her father in a facility and she overcompensates by nit picking
2014-11-06 07:12:57 PM lizmacinnes ahhhhh Kathy great idea.
2014-11-06 07:12:58 PM wward enter the chat room
2014-11-06 07:13:07 PM mcagle1 we have someone who passes the newspaper and mail too
2014-11-06 07:13:22 PM lizmacinnes I think that might be the case, but she is making it difficult.
2014-11-06 07:13:30 PM kathyhughes I am sure that she does....there are lots of families out there who can be a challenge because they feel guilty
2014-11-06 07:13:56 PM danac it helps her feel needed. she was a beautician and she still walks around. it's not the same but she feels like she has a purpose
2014-11-06 07:13:59 PM anthonyalviar you are so right kathy
2014-11-06 07:14:03 PM lizmacinnes It is so hard sometimes when you have loved ones like that. It makes our jobs challenging
2014-11-06 07:14:05 PM kathyhughes I am sure that she is....my answer to families like that was always...thank-you and good idea
2014-11-06 07:14:16 PM kathyhughes Hello Wendy
2014-11-06 07:14:31 PM kimleon also maybe find pctiures online of old phones, people working switchboards, etc. & use as a discussion-starter
2014-11-06 07:14:32 PM lizmacinnes Ok Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will try them all!
2014-11-06 07:14:44 PM wward Hello Everyone!
2014-11-06 07:14:50 PM danac hello!
2014-11-06 07:14:52 PM debbie134 I went to the wake of one of my residents last night. His daughter was angry when I said he went to bingo 2x this past month and won both times. She said he wasn't capable of going and playing on his own. He was and loved it.
2014-11-06 07:15:09 PM lizmacinnes He is great to talk to 1/1 but he gets so lost in a group because he can't hear.
2014-11-06 07:15:15 PM steelers7311 enter the chat room
2014-11-06 07:15:30 PM kathyhughes Families mean well...they just don't undrestand and want their loved ones to be "busy" because if they are "busy" the family thinks the resident isn't thinking of them
2014-11-06 07:15:31 PM steelers7311 hello everyone
2014-11-06 07:15:34 PM kathyhughes Hello ALexis
2014-11-06 07:15:46 PM debbie134 Can you sit him near the group leader with his good ear closest to the leader?
2014-11-06 07:15:56 PM steelers7311 what are we discussing sorry im installing new lights in my basement
2014-11-06 07:16:15 PM lizmacinnes I sit next to him every time.
2014-11-06 07:17:06 PM debbie134 I took everything she said with a grain of salt. She is an only child who just lost her dad. I think she is going to have a real tough time with his passing.
2014-11-06 07:17:12 PM kathyhughes We are talking about challenging families
2014-11-06 07:17:23 PM steelers7311 oh that is a fun topic
2014-11-06 07:17:40 PM lisaturske lol!
2014-11-06 07:17:59 PM mcagle1 how do you handle families that what their loved one to participate in all activities ad the resident just wants to be left alone?
2014-11-06 07:18:12 PM mcagle1 and
2014-11-06 07:18:14 PM steelers7311 we have a couple families who are not able to be involved with family decision that they have to have a court person present
2014-11-06 07:18:32 PM steelers7311 Give them independent things to do in their room
2014-11-06 07:18:44 PM lizmacinnes I have some loved ones that visit often and they are so disruptive when they do. I have 23 residents in one room and trying to do actvities and they walk in throw their bags on the floor and act like their mother is the only person in the room. Even during live entertainment. That has been so challenging.
2014-11-06 07:18:52 PM danac we just had a man pass this week. his daughter in law is impossible and she controls his son. she made him go through such agony between hospice care and dnr choices
2014-11-06 07:19:04 PM kimleon Our most challenging families are the ones where the residents family members are or used to be nurses
2014-11-06 07:19:11 PM debbie134 YES!
2014-11-06 07:19:38 PM kathyhughes I know that you all do more than the families are aware of....and you don't take credit for it
2014-11-06 07:20:06 PM kathyhughes so they think that they are not involved
2014-11-06 07:20:16 PM debbie134 Then they treat the facility nurses as if they are complete idiots. One went so far to say"what do you know? You are just an LPN. Didn't have what it takes to be a real nurse!"
2014-11-06 07:20:26 PM lizmacinnes Lately what I do has been so challenging for me.
2014-11-06 07:20:31 PM steelers7311 i think families see what we do. i just had so much praise today aftyer making a shadow box for some resident
2014-11-06 07:20:54 PM danac we are in the middle of our survey. it's been crazy!
2014-11-06 07:21:00 PM kimleon Sometimes we have to help families understand that "activities" encompasses more than the scheduled group activities on the calendar.
2014-11-06 07:21:01 PM lisaturske We let family members know what activities their loved ones have come to. But we are up front about telling them that we can't force them to attend activities. We do encourage them, however.
2014-11-06 07:21:16 PM kathyhughes You know its like a "Wake" people say things that they don't realize what they are saying or what it means
2014-11-06 07:21:27 PM debbie134 I share that it is their loved ones right to decline to participate.
2014-11-06 07:21:32 PM kathyhughes and sometimes we have to let it go in one ear and out the other
2014-11-06 07:22:18 PM steelers7311 kathy i looked at the midterm and i am unable to attend the toastmaster meeting, i work everyday they are offered
2014-11-06 07:22:41 PM kathyhughes I would ask families what was their loved ones routine on the weekends were and see if they can come up with activities that they used to do
2014-11-06 07:22:47 PM steelers7311 do family members come everyday and sit in activities at facilities?'
2014-11-06 07:22:51 PM kathyhughes when are the meetings Alexis
2014-11-06 07:23:00 PM anthonyalviar I'm lucky that so far the families that we have are very supportive with activities
2014-11-06 07:23:15 PM kimleon Also, in care plans for residents who don't participate, I always make a point to ask the family members if they have ideas of what the reisdent might like to do.
2014-11-06 07:23:36 PM steelers7311 when im working held on wednesdays at noon im thinking of going to a college to hear public speaking
2014-11-06 07:23:50 PM wward I agree...learning their routine from family members helps you come up with activities they will enjoy
2014-11-06 07:23:53 PM kathyhughes I purposely invited families to activities or to meet us at the restaurant or mall
2014-11-06 07:23:54 PM mcagle1 thats what i have been doing...just documenting when i residnet refuses
2014-11-06 07:24:22 PM steelers7311 i have he mall trip tomorrow and guess what? It's Santas first day yay
2014-11-06 07:24:26 PM danac we are having a big family council luncheon in two weeks
2014-11-06 07:24:31 PM kathyhughes What fun
2014-11-06 07:24:31 PM anthonyalviar I can't wait to bring them out to see christmas lights
2014-11-06 07:24:40 PM kimleon the majority of our families are very supportive
2014-11-06 07:24:49 PM lizmacinnes Our famalies visit often, but they usually won't sit in the activities room. They take their loved one out of the room instead of watching them participate.
2014-11-06 07:24:53 PM steelers7311 we have amazing light shows here
2014-11-06 07:25:00 PM steelers7311 in pennsylvania
2014-11-06 07:25:08 PM mcagle1 so are ours, there are just a few who are more difficult
2014-11-06 07:25:18 PM kathyhughes Families would come every Sunday to watch a game with us and enjoy the tailgate snacks
2014-11-06 07:25:22 PM danac I think it will be. Social services is co-hosting
2014-11-06 07:25:28 PM lizmacinnes ours are too just some are challenging
2014-11-06 07:26:04 PM steelers7311 our families are so involved right now with them in activities. we are starting our QIS surveys and the questions have a lot on the activity section
2014-11-06 07:26:15 PM kathyhughes You can also record your light trip and share it with the residents who cannot go
2014-11-06 07:26:26 PM anthonyalviar There is a village near our facility and every year all the houses put decorations and beautiful lights. we will go there the second week of dec.
2014-11-06 07:26:38 PM anthonyalviar That's a great idea
2014-11-06 07:26:41 PM anthonyalviar thanks
2014-11-06 07:26:44 PM steelers7311 i just did that with i pads and the kids doing trick o treat
2014-11-06 07:26:54 PM lizmacinnes I wish we could take our residents on more outside trips
2014-11-06 07:26:59 PM steelers7311 do your residents wrap presents
2014-11-06 07:27:00 PM wward That's a great idea to record the light trip...never thought of that!
2014-11-06 07:27:02 PM kathyhughes Yes there are lots of questions in the QIS....activities have to do with quality of life
2014-11-06 07:27:14 PM danac me too! our van is broken so we rely on the county
2014-11-06 07:27:31 PM kathyhughes I would make the residents wrap boxes to put under the trees
2014-11-06 07:27:40 PM steelers7311 aww thats awesome
2014-11-06 07:27:51 PM kathyhughes and I think that there are Christmas lights on YouTube
2014-11-06 07:28:13 PM kathyhughes we would play the "Yule Log" during Christmas activities
2014-11-06 07:28:30 PM kathyhughes Sit around the "fire" and talk about Christmas memories
2014-11-06 07:28:48 PM lizmacinnes I love you tube for the residents. Has anyone ever seen the videos of the babies for Avien Water?
2014-11-06 07:28:50 PM danac we do that too. we got an electric fireplace in the main dining room
2014-11-06 07:28:55 PM steelers7311 my residents are so excited to watch the thanksgiving macys day parade
