2015-07-07 06:39:49 PM kbc0219 our PPD's are paid by Brookdale. Our drug test, not sure what our restrictions are
2015-07-07 06:39:52 PM cinnamonbear (v)
2015-07-07 06:40:03 PM anniea68 PPD we can do in house if needed
2015-07-07 06:40:15 PM acollis03 Our facility pays for our tests to be completed but every volunteer must be over the age of 18 and complete a background, TB, and drug test along with go through an orientation process prior to volunteering in our facility
2015-07-07 06:40:20 PM kathyhughes This a link to Virtual Tours around the world http://kidworldcitizen.org/2014/08/23/using-web-take-kids-virtual-field-trips/
2015-07-07 06:40:24 PM sharden67 left the chat room
2015-07-07 06:40:31 PM j9sparkley As a volunteer I would not like that and I feel confident high school students would not do it. maybe just limit where volunteers are allowed to be - they should not be near residents private rooms or the drug cart.
2015-07-07 06:40:40 PM anniea68 acollis- sounds similar to mine
2015-07-07 06:40:41 PM eriksh7 Same here acollis03

2015-07-07 06:40:45 PM tcoch21 Thank You!
2015-07-07 06:41:24 PM j9sparkley TB test is actually require to attend public school is it not?
2015-07-07 06:41:27 PM anniea68 I have volunteers from transitioanl programs for young adults with autism that have to get tested- that did not go over well
2015-07-07 06:41:31 PM eriksh7 I missed the whole Virtual Tour discussion. Need to go back and read chats ... sounds interesting
2015-07-07 06:41:52 PM acollis03 Yes a TB is required in our state however not yearly to my knowledge its every so many months
2015-07-07 06:41:53 PM sharden67 not used to using my notebook for the chatrooms. Sorry i keep exiting the chat room...so annoying
2015-07-07 06:42:00 PM acollis03 years i mean...opps
2015-07-07 06:42:06 PM kathyhughes you can have the high schoolers do projects as a group like getting crafts ready or doing history displays
2015-07-07 06:42:09 PM ambercovey same for us acollis
2015-07-07 06:42:14 PM j9sparkley Double check what is required by the school board may save your self some over head expenses
2015-07-07 06:42:19 PM bcunniff11 i wish we had drug testing on all employees we definately need it
2015-07-07 06:42:39 PM tcoch21 The Volunteers have to go through more procedures than the actual staff that get hired in to work fulltime.
2015-07-07 06:42:43 PM sharden67 we have high schoolers that volunteer for our bingo in the evening
2015-07-07 06:42:51 PM anniea68 we get tested when we are hired but nothing afterwards
2015-07-07 06:42:53 PM maninder we are not allowed any volunteers
2015-07-07 06:43:11 PM tcoch21 Why Not???
2015-07-07 06:43:12 PM degestrom most of our volunteers are church related
2015-07-07 06:43:13 PM elsa why??
2015-07-07 06:43:14 PM bcunniff11 we have so much training for volunteers that for them it's not worth it
2015-07-07 06:43:26 PM bcunniff11 it scares them away
2015-07-07 06:43:30 PM noreens Our facility has random drug screens but i dont know of anyone who has had one. when someone gets hurt there is a drug screen done
2015-07-07 06:43:30 PM tcoch21 Right
2015-07-07 06:43:33 PM kathyhughes I would guess so
2015-07-07 06:43:36 PM karnak14 We do cori and get a recommendation. I don't think we do drug testing on our volunteers. Are your staff mandated to?
2015-07-07 06:43:36 PM j9sparkley Drug testing employees should be manditory for any medical staff. When i worked for a doctor our nurse assistant would get stoned on her lunch breacK
2015-07-07 06:43:38 PM pisces vwe don't have any volunteers
2015-07-07 06:43:52 PM degestrom we do cori also but no drug testing
2015-07-07 06:43:56 PM karnak14 Yikes!!!
2015-07-07 06:44:01 PM eriksh7 same here bcunniff 11
2015-07-07 06:44:07 PM degestrom unless an issue arises
2015-07-07 06:44:07 PM bcunniff11 :)
2015-07-07 06:44:11 PM kbc0219 we have limited volunteers
2015-07-07 06:44:13 PM kathyhughes you can have volunteers who never come into the facility
2015-07-07 06:44:15 PM ambercovey we do drug testing on everyone, but i havent heard of anyone being picked random
2015-07-07 06:44:20 PM sharden67 im not sure of the procedures that are required for the volunteer.....my dept has a volunteer coordinator that is in charge of the volunteers
2015-07-07 06:44:29 PM noreens left the chat room
2015-07-07 06:44:29 PM noreens enter the chat room
2015-07-07 06:44:34 PM lisafm I'm also not sure, our AD handles that
2015-07-07 06:44:35 PM j9sparkley Yes to prevent getting caught she would sit at her computer and do office note work in the afternoons
2015-07-07 06:44:35 PM kathyhughes we had a large group of volunteers who would send cards to residents every month
2015-07-07 06:44:36 PM tcoch21 Whats the point in that???
2015-07-07 06:44:39 PM bcunniff11 what do you mean by that Kathy?
2015-07-07 06:44:54 PM acollis03 that is nice! As part of my job I am the activities director/volunteer coordinator I wear two hats
2015-07-07 06:44:56 PM bcunniff11 ooh that's a good idea..from, a church or school?
2015-07-07 06:44:56 PM anniea68 that's a good idea Kathy-
2015-07-07 06:44:59 PM kathyhughes they would send the residents a card ,,,,esp the residents without family
2015-07-07 06:45:03 PM elsa ok i see nice idea kathy
2015-07-07 06:45:04 PM sharden67 that has happend....some volunteers change their mind and don't want to committ.
2015-07-07 06:45:10 PM lisafm so they would get mail
2015-07-07 06:45:15 PM tcoch21 ok..... I see now
2015-07-07 06:45:23 PM noreens good idea kathy
2015-07-07 06:45:23 PM eriksh7 That sounds wonderful Kathy
2015-07-07 06:45:24 PM anniea68 Im having a hard time with intergenerational groups coming in on a regular basis, but something like that might be fun
2015-07-07 06:45:25 PM acollis03 We have a 4-H group that does cards for the residents around every holiday that the residents really enjoy
2015-07-07 06:45:26 PM kathyhughes and we had home schoolers who made trivia cards once a month for the dining room tables
2015-07-07 06:45:41 PM acollis03 Veery neat I like that idea!
2015-07-07 06:45:50 PM kbc0219 we had the girl scouts sent letters to our residents and after 6 weeks they invitied them for a meet and greet and had tea and ice cream
2015-07-07 06:45:52 PM tcoch21 Great idea
2015-07-07 06:45:52 PM lisafm we get lots of homemade cards around different holidays, from elementary school kids
2015-07-07 06:46:01 PM acollis03 Did they just put one trivia card on the table? or several questions?
2015-07-07 06:46:03 PM j9sparkley love the card club idea - what if the residents did it for one another - like a secret pen pal.
2015-07-07 06:46:04 PM degestrom we have flower angels who bring in flowers for the dining room tables monthly
2015-07-07 06:46:05 PM anniea68 start pen pals- teach kids to write notes and reisdents to use email
2015-07-07 06:46:13 PM cnorstedt enter the chat room
2015-07-07 06:46:21 PM sharden67 we have college kids that come in over the holidays are do crafts with residents more so around thanksgiving and christmas
2015-07-07 06:46:27 PM noreens the school we do intergenerational with sends cards to the residents
2015-07-07 06:46:34 PM anniea68 at another community I worked at, staff were angels for residents without family
2015-07-07 06:46:42 PM penkay left the chat room
2015-07-07 06:46:47 PM pisces that's a good idea
2015-07-07 06:47:09 PM sharden67 Its nice that we have the local elementary schools for pen pals
2015-07-07 06:47:10 PM karnak14 The local temples and church groups are great about sending cards!
2015-07-07 06:47:19 PM anniea68 activities kept a box of cards, envelopes, stickers, small things for holiday/birthday surprises
2015-07-07 06:47:25 PM bcunniff11 i wish our staff would be involed more
2015-07-07 06:47:28 PM degestrom nice
2015-07-07 06:47:36 PM degestrom me too re staff
2015-07-07 06:47:54 PM pisces yes we keep cards ,stickers,etc...
2015-07-07 06:48:02 PM acollis03 My residents are crushed at the moment because we were partnered with one of the local elementary schools and students came to visit every Thursday for an hour during the school year every other month and would do crafts, sing a-longs, games etc and we just recently found out they are no longer able to come due to the school board said it is considered non-instructional time
2015-07-07 06:48:05 PM eriksh7 We do something similar annie68. But every staff member gets a resident or two to be their angels
2015-07-07 06:48:09 PM anniea68 it would never work in my surrent community though- same issues everyone seems to have with getting staff involved
2015-07-07 06:48:29 PM kathyhughes so take your residents to the school
2015-07-07 06:48:32 PM bcunniff11 we had an elementary school make humming bird feeders
2015-07-07 06:48:36 PM elsa well i have learned with staff is if we reword them they help
2015-07-07 06:49:04 PM anniea68 I can barely get a CM for lunch outings and we buy them lunch! lol
2015-07-07 06:49:05 PM tcoch21 Food always motivates staff to help.
2015-07-07 06:49:06 PM karnak14 I have found a lot of the younger aides more open to sitting1;1 with residents and doing this type of activity or adult coloring. If you leave a box for them, they will have something to use when you aren't around. Especially for residents who can be a bit challenging...
2015-07-07 06:49:06 PM sharden67 I like that our residents make all the birthday cards for our facility....our little card crafters.....we print out sayings and verses that they cut out and add to the other embellishments to the cards....the residents are wonderful crafters and makes them all feel useful
2015-07-07 06:49:17 PM noreens acollis thats awful some people just cant think outside of the box
2015-07-07 06:49:19 PM bcunniff11 how would you reword things
