2015-08-06 06:13:47 PM dbalzumati WHATS THAT
2015-08-06 06:14:10 PM kathyhughes So....you get props that match the songs
2015-08-06 06:14:11 PM cgbrown1977 I was just going to ask for ideas on that Kathy....you read minds!
2015-08-06 06:14:27 PM kathyhughes and then you place the object within reach of the residents
2015-08-06 06:14:31 PM phylliskrastanov these are pepople who are not coming to group activities and so we are doing this - we assign each staff member about 2-3 per day, sometimes have a gal just do 2 hours and get as many as she can
2015-08-06 06:14:42 PM llemack I think I need more claification Kathy...
2015-08-06 06:14:44 PM cbrockway so i made a group for the lower functioning residents that they could attend and recieve sensory 3x weekly and reduced my 1 on 1s
2015-08-06 06:14:49 PM vickey great idea, kathy
2015-08-06 06:15:01 PM kathyhughes and when you play the song the residents have to hold up the prop that goes with the song
2015-08-06 06:15:03 PM char Also give the artist name and the residents would name as many songs they sang
2015-08-06 06:15:15 PM cbrockway cool
2015-08-06 06:15:18 PM phylliskrastanov like an apple fpr "don't sit under the appletree..."
2015-08-06 06:15:18 PM dbalzumati THAT WOULD BE INTERESTING
2015-08-06 06:15:20 PM llemack what do you do for sensory 3x a week cbrock?
2015-08-06 06:15:33 PM kim1 How fun!
2015-08-06 06:15:34 PM cbrockway its called harmony club
2015-08-06 06:15:35 PM kathyhughes It was fun for all ages
2015-08-06 06:15:38 PM llemack Get it now. Great idea
2015-08-06 06:15:46 PM vickey (y)
2015-08-06 06:15:48 PM kathyhughes thanks
2015-08-06 06:15:53 PM cgbrown1977 I think I will put that into my next calendar
2015-08-06 06:15:55 PM cbrockway its along the same lines as the snoozelin program, we incorporate all the senses in one hour
2015-08-06 06:16:14 PM llemack snoozelin program?
2015-08-06 06:16:16 PM cbrockway i have 8 in that group tuesday wednesday and thursdays
2015-08-06 06:16:30 PM cbrockway i think i spelled snoozelin wrong, but we call it harmony club
2015-08-06 06:16:46 PM phylliskrastanov I wish i could run a choral group...i can't sign to save my life. is harmoney club a signing group?
2015-08-06 06:16:50 PM llemack what do you do for those activities? im eager!
2015-08-06 06:16:51 PM kathyhughes I only added the residents who hated people to my 1-1 list! LOL
2015-08-06 06:16:54 PM char what's snoozelin
2015-08-06 06:16:59 PM cbrockway snoozelin is a high sensory program for lower functioning residents
2015-08-06 06:17:07 PM cgbrown1977 We have a memory care floor also and soon will be opening a second one....I am starting to feel overwhelmed with no activity staff
2015-08-06 06:17:26 PM cbrockway lots of stimuli for people who need it
2015-08-06 06:17:27 PM llemack AGREED CGBROWN!
2015-08-06 06:17:34 PM cgbrown1977 Explain snoozlin for us
2015-08-06 06:17:49 PM dbalzumati YES PLEASE EXPLAIN
2015-08-06 06:17:51 PM llemack what activities do you conduct?
2015-08-06 06:18:01 PM vickey wow cgbrowm, is it just you for activities
2015-08-06 06:18:20 PM dbalzumati ASK FOR PART TIME HELP
2015-08-06 06:18:26 PM kathyhughes http://www.worldwidesnoezelen.nl/en/clienten-en/item/75-alzheimers-patients-find-respite-in-snoezelen-rooms-english
2015-08-06 06:18:28 PM llemack ask for a raise!
2015-08-06 06:18:29 PM carmenc909 I'm the only one in activities for 90 residents
2015-08-06 06:18:35 PM llemack thanks Kathy!
2015-08-06 06:18:46 PM kathyhughes you are welcome
2015-08-06 06:19:04 PM kathyhughes I would hope that they get staff for you
2015-08-06 06:19:24 PM vickey same here
2015-08-06 06:19:25 PM kathyhughes and I would write up a proposal for a staff person for the memory care
2015-08-06 06:19:26 PM llemack P.S that senior video makes my day. Ive played it on repeat all week lol
2015-08-06 06:19:33 PM cbrockway so what we do is we put a disco ball, a difuser with different aromatherapy scents, give them things to hold like squish balls or stuffed animals, play energetic music, and do hand masages, sometimes we will use herbs from the garden, but we mainly try to get all the senses going for each person in the hour we do it
2015-08-06 06:19:42 PM amyr wow carmen that is crazy
2015-08-06 06:19:42 PM cgbrown1977 It is just me for the assisted living (we have 84 residents there) and our memory care floor has a med aide and a resident aide for 16 people, but I plan and help out with their activities also
2015-08-06 06:19:53 PM cbrockway ive had glow sticks, light up balls, all sorts of different visual and tactile stuff
2015-08-06 06:20:02 PM carmenc909 I just do the best I can. Love my people and my job.
2015-08-06 06:20:12 PM kathyhughes so all the staff should be educated in activities
2015-08-06 06:20:15 PM dbalzumati THATS ALL YOU CAN DO
2015-08-06 06:20:20 PM cbrockway olfactory is also important so we use a diffuser i got it off amazon for 20 dollars
2015-08-06 06:20:22 PM llemack cbrock do you have a calander that explains and lists those great ideas? I am very intrigued
2015-08-06 06:20:47 PM carmenc909 Yes, I rely a lot on the resident assistants to help me get residents to activities.
2015-08-06 06:20:56 PM sarahdecollibus times like that makes you wish they had a guideline for staffing activities
2015-08-06 06:21:08 PM cgbrown1977 What type of facility Carmen?
2015-08-06 06:21:09 PM char left the chat room
2015-08-06 06:21:09 PM cbrockway if you want i can email info to you llemack, my calendar doesnt explain harmony club
2015-08-06 06:21:18 PM cbrockway but i could send you my calendar if you want!
2015-08-06 06:21:33 PM kim1 Carmen--I did that for 4 months, and I knew it was only temporary that I would be by myself in the dept. I feel for you!
2015-08-06 06:21:34 PM carmenc909 Assisted Living
2015-08-06 06:21:55 PM kathyhughes all staff should be educated about activities
2015-08-06 06:22:02 PM llemack We really just have one big space with only 2 smaller room lots of natural light. some limitiations there but Id love to try it. Ill send you an email now, whats your email address?
2015-08-06 06:22:38 PM amyr very true kathy plus they can give ideas too
2015-08-06 06:22:52 PM cbrockway agreed! i did that presentation thing for the practicum and i enjoyed telling the newbies about activities, even though the new maintencance mans response was, How much interaction does maintance and the residents have??? lol
2015-08-06 06:23:06 PM vickey i agree
2015-08-06 06:23:14 PM cgbrown1977 I agree Kathy...however our Dir of Nursing thinks her people have enough to do and asked me not to ask them to do my work.
2015-08-06 06:23:17 PM cbrockway cbrockway@issaquahnursing.com
2015-08-06 06:23:29 PM kathyhughes My maintenance guys did activities
2015-08-06 06:23:31 PM amyr rude!
2015-08-06 06:23:34 PM llemack omg he could have an assistant! hand me a hammer... hold this for me!
2015-08-06 06:23:36 PM cbrockway i know!
2015-08-06 06:23:44 PM kathyhughes I agree with the DON
2015-08-06 06:23:55 PM dbalzumati OUR MAINTENANCE GOT INVOLVED WITH THE RESIDENTS TOO
2015-08-06 06:24:11 PM kathyhughes and all you can do is to educate them to motivate the residents to go to the program
2015-08-06 06:24:12 PM phylliskrastanov in our building everyone gets involved
2015-08-06 06:24:15 PM dbalzumati I DO TOO THEY HAVE ENOUGH TO DO
2015-08-06 06:24:21 PM llemack sometimes its just as simple as a conversation though isnt Kathy?
2015-08-06 06:24:27 PM carmenc909 Our maintenance is involved with residents every day.
2015-08-06 06:24:37 PM kathyhughes and tell them that when thoer residents are at activities they have less work
2015-08-06 06:24:43 PM kathyhughes right Lauren
2015-08-06 06:24:47 PM cbrockway exactly!!!!
2015-08-06 06:24:50 PM cbrockway thats what i say
2015-08-06 06:24:50 PM kim1 Our maintenane guy danced with the "Dancing Grannies:" they put their boas around his neck and flirted with him. the residents loved it!
2015-08-06 06:25:03 PM carmenc909 That's great Kim
2015-08-06 06:25:08 PM llemack oh great idea, I need to get boas!
2015-08-06 06:25:14 PM sarahdecollibus I get to talk to all the new hires during orientation and thats when i educate them .
2015-08-06 06:25:21 PM kathyhughes and educating people that they are all part of the activities and sharing with them that the guidelines state that
2015-08-06 06:25:24 PM dbalzumati ME TOO
2015-08-06 06:25:26 PM char enter the chat room
2015-08-06 06:25:33 PM feliciap enter the chat room

2015-08-06 06:25:40 PM vickey i include the maintainace people as they go by , i ask them questions
2015-08-06 06:25:40 PM phylliskrastanov that's a good point to make with new hires during orientation
2015-08-06 06:25:43 PM feliciap Hello, sorry i am late!
2015-08-06 06:25:46 PM kathyhughes with the guidelines highlighted for them
2015-08-06 06:25:49 PM sarahdecollibus all new hires from all departments
2015-08-06 06:25:51 PM kathyhughes Hello Felicia
2015-08-06 06:26:14 PM kathyhughes as I had 10 DON's
2015-08-06 06:26:15 PM vickey hi felicia
2015-08-06 06:26:26 PM carmenc909 10 at one time?
2015-08-06 06:26:28 PM cbrockway yea ive been through about 4 DON's
2015-08-06 06:26:29 PM kathyhughes and they needed to know that they were in the guidelines
2015-08-06 06:26:29 PM vickey thats a lot
2015-08-06 06:26:29 PM phylliskrastanov oh boy that's a lot of DONs
2015-08-06 06:26:46 PM phylliskrastanov i bet they burn out quickly
2015-08-06 06:26:48 PM vickey of don"s
2015-08-06 06:26:50 PM kathyhughes no thoughout my career along with 30 ADM's
2015-08-06 06:26:51 PM amyr we are on #3
2015-08-06 06:26:55 PM dbalzumati WE HAVE 1
2015-08-06 06:26:59 PM carmenc909 ohhhh...duh
2015-08-06 06:27:05 PM vickey ok
2015-08-06 06:27:07 PM cgbrown1977 I would agree if the aides were busy and the residents looked like the aides were caring for them...but when you find the aides on other floors sitting lounges on their phones and the residents hair is tangled looking and they look unkempt I have a problem seeing that they have too much to do.
2015-08-06 06:27:11 PM kathyhughes No here in Syracuse they play musical nursing homes
2015-08-06 06:27:13 PM kim1 We have gone through many DONs and staffing coordinators in the 3 years I have been there.
2015-08-06 06:27:19 PM amyr love my E.D.!
2015-08-06 06:27:39 PM kathyhughes I agree Christine
2015-08-06 06:27:49 PM kathyhughes that is when I would write them up
2015-08-06 06:27:52 PM dbalzumati GOING THROUGH CHANGE TOO WE NEW BUY OUT
2015-08-06 06:27:57 PM vickey i agree cgbrown
2015-08-06 06:28:19 PM dbalzumati ALOT OF PEOPLE LEFT
2015-08-06 06:28:37 PM kathyhughes its always a good idea to educate the entire staff about the activities regulations
2015-08-06 06:28:42 PM sarahdecollibus it takes all of us
2015-08-06 06:28:44 PM char my computer keeps kicking me out
2015-08-06 06:28:49 PM phylliskrastanov i agree
2015-08-06 06:28:56 PM vickey agreed
2015-08-06 06:28:57 PM amyr i agree kathy. no one gets write ups where i am. it is sad. therefore there is no accountability!
2015-08-06 06:29:02 PM carmenc909 I really wish we could find resident assistants that truly want to be there and truly care about our residents.
2015-08-06 06:29:12 PM carmenc909 We have a few good ones.
2015-08-06 06:29:14 PM sarahdecollibus when we educate them they always act suprised and willing to help!
2015-08-06 06:29:20 PM kathyhughes I would write them up and keep it in a file in my office
2015-08-06 06:29:21 PM vickey same here
2015-08-06 06:29:25 PM feliciap i agree cgbrown!! one of our main problems
2015-08-06 06:29:26 PM kim1 Aides at my facility like to "drop people off" in the AR--especially people who need constant supervision! Frustrating when I want to leave to do assessments or other stuff.
2015-08-06 06:29:41 PM kathyhughes and then at least I had some documentation on them
2015-08-06 06:29:57 PM amyr pay is low compared to others in our area.
2015-08-06 06:30:04 PM char yeah, i agree with you Kathy
2015-08-06 06:30:19 PM kathyhughes and was always told for 30+ years that nursing was short and that I could write them up but they could not be fired
2015-08-06 06:30:23 PM sarahdecollibus What do you do if thay try to assign a 1:1 behavorial or fall risk to you during a group activity?
2015-08-06 06:30:34 PM phylliskrastanov good idea, will remember that. I often get aids bring highly demented residents off to bingo now and then, and i have to bring them back once the yelling commences
2015-08-06 06:30:47 PM kathyhughes until the DON d'jour had a problem and the first person they came to was me!
2015-08-06 06:31:22 PM cbrockway that is frustrating kim
2015-08-06 06:31:25 PM cgbrown1977 It would be great if everyone was in this type of work because it was a passion, unfortunately many are there just for a job
2015-08-06 06:31:33 PM llemack Kathy did you get feel like you were burning out?
2015-08-06 06:31:37 PM kathyhughes WEll Sarah I would take them back to the unit
2015-08-06 06:31:56 PM cbrockway ive had that happen too, but if the activity is over I just take the resident back to the aide, and say that there is no one in the dining room now and they arent safe alone
2015-08-06 06:32:03 PM sarahdecollibus thats what we did and got that ATTITUDED
2015-08-06 06:32:04 PM kim1 We get fall risks all the time dropped off--it's crazy when they keep trying to get up and I am trying to lead an activity.
2015-08-06 06:32:22 PM dbalzumati ME TOO
2015-08-06 06:32:27 PM phylliskrastanov my biggest fear with the job of being AD, and I hope I will be soon....is remembering all the thousands of things that are my responsibility
2015-08-06 06:32:44 PM dbalzumati ATTTITUDE HATE THAT
2015-08-06 06:32:45 PM cbrockway i always put them right next to me, it is distracting for the others, but usually they have a need if they are constantly trying to get up, like bathroom or pain
2015-08-06 06:32:46 PM vickey when they bring me the the highly demented activities, i always ask the resident if they want to stay if they say no, i tell them, they don"t want to stay so i wont keep them with me
2015-08-06 06:32:56 PM vickey residet
2015-08-06 06:32:58 PM amyr we have that problem also. they think the activity is a babysitter. not fair to the other residents
2015-08-06 06:32:59 PM kathyhughes I never felt burned out....I always had something that kept me interested in the field...it was volunteering for the state association and then the national association that keeps me going
2015-08-06 06:33:07 PM cbrockway so i find nursing staff that can help them with their need
2015-08-06 06:33:41 PM kathyhughes Amy that is when you need to educate staff
2015-08-06 06:33:43 PM phylliskrastanov that's right amy, they drag them to an activity even if inappropriate so they do not have to watch her
2015-08-06 06:33:51 PM llemack did you ever feel like there is never enough time in the day! lol
2015-08-06 06:33:57 PM vickey yep they think we are a babysitter
2015-08-06 06:34:12 PM dbalzumati THATS RIGHT BUT TELL THEM THEY HAVE TO STAY WITH THEM
2015-08-06 06:34:14 PM phylliskrastanov every day llemack
2015-08-06 06:34:15 PM kathyhughes and let them know that we have to meet the individual needs and that that particular resident has no interest in that program
2015-08-06 06:34:40 PM kathyhughes How would the Aide like to sit though a symphony?
2015-08-06 06:34:44 PM sarahdecollibus that makes perfect sense
2015-08-06 06:34:46 PM cbrockway every single day! too much paper work1
2015-08-06 06:35:09 PM kathyhughes I would ask the staff what do they do not like to do
2015-08-06 06:35:21 PM kim1 My former boss used to say that even if we lived at work, we would still not get everything done.
2015-08-06 06:35:22 PM phylliskrastanov i find there is no time for planning at work, i do all my planning at home, but i know this is not a good habit
2015-08-06 06:35:28 PM sarahdecollibus I would like to get involved in the state association
2015-08-06 06:35:35 PM cbrockway weve had 9 admits in the last 2 days and it takes a good hour to complete an admission in its entirety if not longer!!!
2015-08-06 06:35:40 PM amyr we have a program called On The Go. it is for high fall risks and dementia behaviors. i an the cena who runs this program. only one life care still has this. i go to all the activities so i am the cena who watches over the fall risk the aides bring to the activity
2015-08-06 06:35:41 PM kathyhughes and then invite them to you inservice and play classical music in the background
2015-08-06 06:35:42 PM cbrockway me too phyllis
2015-08-06 06:36:32 PM kathyhughes I played Irish Rebel Music which they all hated....the staff
2015-08-06 06:36:38 PM sarahdecollibus lol
2015-08-06 06:36:40 PM vickey lol
2015-08-06 06:36:42 PM kathyhughes and so I would ask them why
2015-08-06 06:36:49 PM vickey great idea Kathy
2015-08-06 06:36:58 PM kathyhughes and they would say that they just didn't like it
2015-08-06 06:37:02 PM kathyhughes so I would say
2015-08-06 06:37:21 PM kathyhughes so why do you bring residents to activities that they do not like?????
2015-08-06 06:37:24 PM cbrockway thats great Kathy! good way to put things into perspective
2015-08-06 06:37:26 PM kathyhughes its the same thing
2015-08-06 06:37:40 PM vickey great Kathy
2015-08-06 06:37:45 PM vickey (y)
2015-08-06 06:37:45 PM char it sure is!
2015-08-06 06:37:46 PM phylliskrastanov i am at Life care as well and we not not have that, but we did just get permission to have a CNA with us for bus trips
2015-08-06 06:38:03 PM tinab enter the chat room
2015-08-06 06:38:06 PM dbalzumati THATS GOOD
2015-08-06 06:38:18 PM kathyhughes and then I would ask them if they thought that playing music that they liked was good for the residents who did not like it
2015-08-06 06:38:20 PM kim1 Nice!
2015-08-06 06:38:29 PM kathyhughes and they finally got the point
2015-08-06 06:38:34 PM vickey (y)
2015-08-06 06:38:36 PM dbalzumati FINALLY
2015-08-06 06:38:41 PM kathyhughes Hello Tina
2015-08-06 06:38:43 PM phylliskrastanov that's a brilliant idea Kathy! I want to do that
2015-08-06 06:38:51 PM amyr i am really upset because we started fine dining in january.vvour dining room is only for high functioning residents. so they took our activity room and turned it into a dining room for the behavioral and ones who are dependent diners.
2015-08-06 06:38:56 PM kim1 Me too!
2015-08-06 06:39:11 PM dbalzumati THATS NOT RIGHT
2015-08-06 06:39:19 PM carmenc909 That's not right Amy
2015-08-06 06:39:29 PM kathyhughes Amy are you doing anything for those residents waiting for their meal?

2015-08-06 06:40:51 PM carmenc909 We have started playing music while the residents are dining. They love it!
2015-08-06 06:41:05 PM sarahdecollibus It is a lottery and the winners win lucky bucks that can be used for the monthly auction
2015-08-06 06:41:08 PM kathyhughes then its time to do something so that you can take credit for it

2015-08-06 06:43:17 PM feliciap we usually do stretches before meals because it is supposed to engance their appetite as well
2015-08-06 06:43:17 PM kathyhughes You have to think about it as an opportunity
2015-08-06 06:43:31 PM kathyhughes to get as many people in activities as possible
2015-08-06 06:43:35 PM amyr we can try aromatherapy to stim apetites

2015-08-06 06:44:12 PM llemack Yes we use mad gab! we put that its sounds like on a board and have them all sound and hear what it reads not what it says, makes them think!
2015-08-06 06:44:18 PM kathyhughes we would cover the tables with paper and give them crayons to doodle

2015-08-06 06:45:11 PM feliciap i wish we could do that kathy. we're not supposed to use crayons or "color" with the residents because it takes away from their dignity. But i love to color..i find it therepeutic!
2015-08-06 06:45:16 PM amyr maybe we can order some placemats to color
2015-08-06 06:45:18 PM kim1 I wanted to do "diversity tables," where people sit with other people instead of the ones they always sit with. We could have conversation starter cards and go around trying to stimulate talk. My boss nixed it, saying our residents will not be happy sitting in a different place at meals. Maybe she's right.
2015-08-06 06:45:44 PM cbrockway theraputic coloring is a very up and coming thing in our line of work! thats stupid
