2015-07-07 06:49:27 PM eriksh7 OMG acollis03... Stories like that are heartbreaking, thoughtless, and hurtful to all. It is probably the MOST BENEFICIAL INSTRUCTIONAL TIME there is.
2015-07-07 06:49:35 PM cnorstedt I am working on a mentor program with school kids and our residents
2015-07-07 06:49:39 PM lisafm i agree eriksh
2015-07-07 06:49:40 PM j9sparkley certificates of appreciation are easily printed and appreciated staff can use them at annual review etc
2015-07-07 06:49:40 PM karnak14 I like that idea. Our residents make cards but not for each other.
2015-07-07 06:49:41 PM acollis03 The only issue with that is our van is very small and for some odd reason whenever an outing is planned even if it is something the residents have been discussing for weeks when the day actually comes they begin backing out, etc. then only a few actually end up going....
2015-07-07 06:50:04 PM kathyhughes at least a few can go
2015-07-07 06:50:19 PM kathyhughes they would appreciate it
2015-07-07 06:50:25 PM anniea68 a lot of schools are so pushed for testing scores they don't have free time to do extras anymore
2015-07-07 06:50:31 PM bcunniff11 at least you have a van
2015-07-07 06:50:32 PM sharden67 we have card crafter every couple of weeks....we have a nice supply of homemade cards.
2015-07-07 06:50:33 PM noreens acollis maybe you could partner with an after school program
2015-07-07 06:50:34 PM mariasandra sorry everyone my computers not working right
2015-07-07 06:50:43 PM kathyhughes I walked 4 residents over to the school once a month
2015-07-07 06:50:52 PM cnorstedt Our facility has a bus stop to help staff out and bring kids in
2015-07-07 06:51:08 PM eriksh7 Exactly annie68
2015-07-07 06:51:12 PM j9sparkley you are correct teachers have a very full agenda however after school care programs could help out easily
2015-07-07 06:51:13 PM lisafm I have a question: we have a few res's that like to hang near the nurse's station and one was recently coloring while there. Our administrator said it shouldn't be allowed since it's a dignity issue - ?
2015-07-07 06:51:17 PM sharden67 thats okay mariasandra...my hands are not working right tonight
2015-07-07 06:51:18 PM martha1 we have started taking out the newer residents out ot lunch , to get to know them better and then it is easier to hook them up with others...
2015-07-07 06:51:18 PM degestrom after school program sounds good
2015-07-07 06:51:38 PM bcunniff11 reading what everyones saying i feel like we cant do anything
2015-07-07 06:51:39 PM karnak14 Kathy any suggestions or tips for those of us without vans, getting our residents out more. The vans are very costly to use. I was thiinking of sister facilities to split a trip. Any other ideas???
2015-07-07 06:51:43 PM anniea68 a dignity issue? was the resident happy?
2015-07-07 06:51:45 PM kathyhughes If the resident wants to sit there it isn't a dignity issue
2015-07-07 06:51:45 PM cnorstedt My goal is to have residents tutor students after school, or just help with homework
2015-07-07 06:51:48 PM elsa well sometimes its hard to get schools involvedi have little luck with them
2015-07-07 06:51:55 PM kathyhughes and I would put it in their care plan
2015-07-07 06:52:15 PM j9sparkley I see residents neer the nurses station at every AL vacility i go to. how does it effect thir dignity? are they crying
2015-07-07 06:52:22 PM sharden67 July we are having a Panera Bread Lunch outside in the park...we order and pick up. for those that don't want to order we also are having hot dogs, beans, salads and of course watermelon
2015-07-07 06:52:23 PM degestrom my facility allows 3 to 4 trips a month
2015-07-07 06:52:25 PM lisafm Kathy, that's exactly what I thought. But this was the owner of the facility. She said that coloring is too childish
2015-07-07 06:52:29 PM kathyhughes where can a resident know what it going on in the world but to see near the nurses station
2015-07-07 06:52:38 PM kathyhughes show her the regulations
2015-07-07 06:52:42 PM acollis03 These are all great tools and tips I am going to bring it to the residents attention and ask them what they think of the idea during resident council
2015-07-07 06:52:44 PM anniea68 we have had food trucks come to our facility- that can be fun
2015-07-07 06:52:54 PM kathyhughes it is person appropriate
2015-07-07 06:53:05 PM anniea68 and some residents feel more secure being close to the nurse
2015-07-07 06:53:16 PM cinnamonbear Our residents color
2015-07-07 06:53:18 PM lisafm kathy yes that's what I thought - I might bring it up with her
2015-07-07 06:53:20 PM eriksh7 Agreed Kathy
2015-07-07 06:53:26 PM sharden67 left the chat room
2015-07-07 06:53:26 PM degestrom they love the nurses stations
2015-07-07 06:53:29 PM noreens I bought adult coloring books at the local craft store , they were of museums, flowers and scenery
2015-07-07 06:53:30 PM anniea68 bigger issue is nurses talking HIPPA protected info in front of residents
2015-07-07 06:53:31 PM kathyhughes most people want to be with "healthy: people and that is at the nurses station
2015-07-07 06:53:38 PM cinnamonbear I like to color for that matter
2015-07-07 06:53:41 PM karnak14 A lot of residents like to be where the action is. which is usually the nurse's station.
2015-07-07 06:53:42 PM degestrom that is a problem
2015-07-07 06:53:45 PM j9sparkley I think that manager was in a bad mood that day! his or her reasons just are not sound
2015-07-07 06:53:47 PM kathyhughes we all like to color
2015-07-07 06:53:53 PM sharden67 enter the chat room
2015-07-07 06:53:55 PM degestrom yes we do
2015-07-07 06:53:58 PM maninder we don't have that issue as of yet
2015-07-07 06:54:04 PM tcoch21 People watching is an Activity Too!
2015-07-07 06:54:10 PM kathyhughes Please...the residents all know what is going on more than the staff
2015-07-07 06:54:12 PM degestrom absolutely
2015-07-07 06:54:17 PM acollis03 Plus it is the residents RIGHT that if they would like to sit there to color they should be aloud to that is their home
2015-07-07 06:54:20 PM anniea68 totally-
2015-07-07 06:54:28 PM degestrom I may have to add that to my participation book
2015-07-07 06:54:31 PM elsa yes they see all ank know all
2015-07-07 06:54:35 PM j9sparkley I second that - they even sell adult coloring books at the book stores of course i have one its beautiful
2015-07-07 06:54:37 PM kathyhughes you should
2015-07-07 06:55:01 PM sharden67 im starting to lose track of how many times that I have left this room...so sorry.....think for now on I will be typing on the desk computer...feeling a little challenged tonight
2015-07-07 06:55:02 PM bcunniff11 does anyone have nursing issues with residents going outside or cnas doing books outside i like 1 assistant outside 1 inside doing small groups or one on ones is that correct thinking
2015-07-07 06:55:05 PM mariasandra how is that not come to facility?
2015-07-07 06:55:20 PM karnak14 I love to color! Did as a kid and still do. Lots of cool book with adult theme and more difficult themes. Also simple ones are fun for the memory care units. It is so fun and people feel great getting compliments on their artwork. WE hang them in window. Stain glass art!
2015-07-07 06:55:23 PM bcunniff11 sorry about typing daughter in other arm
2015-07-07 06:55:35 PM eriksh7 I always say acollis03 that "This is their home."
2015-07-07 06:55:38 PM kathyhughes that is fine
2015-07-07 06:55:41 PM sharden67 the owner of that facility that said coloring is childish....needs to be educated
2015-07-07 06:55:43 PM degestrom it is
2015-07-07 06:55:51 PM cinnamonbear yep
2015-07-07 06:55:53 PM bcunniff11 cokloring is big in my facility
2015-07-07 06:55:53 PM cnorstedt We did a painting group today by coping a picture of a bird in black and white and they painted the color, they loved it.
2015-07-07 06:55:54 PM eriksh7 agreed sharden67
2015-07-07 06:55:56 PM degestrom I agree
2015-07-07 06:56:00 PM kathyhughes try colored pencils.....sometimes they fall for that
2015-07-07 06:56:01 PM martha1 agrre
2015-07-07 06:56:01 PM anniea68 if you color on regular paper and go over it with a cotton ball in oil, you will get that translucent affect
2015-07-07 06:56:12 PM degestrom good idea
2015-07-07 06:56:14 PM bcunniff11 ooh good idea
2015-07-07 06:56:17 PM mariasandra Nice how do I go about finding these kind of volunteers
2015-07-07 06:56:23 PM acollis03 Our policy for outdoors if the patient has capacity and can physically let themselves in and out of the building safely they can go whenever they wish, however if they can not a staff member MUST be outside with them
2015-07-07 06:56:28 PM pisces yes i agree colored pencils are better
2015-07-07 06:56:29 PM elsa that sounds like a nice idea anniea68
2015-07-07 06:56:30 PM sharden67 that should be the residents choice...not the owner taking the choice from them.
2015-07-07 06:56:34 PM j9sparkley I did painting too. Try using water color pencils the really enjoyed the control
2015-07-07 06:56:41 PM lisafm thanks for all the support re coloring, all! I'll see if I can bring it to the owner
2015-07-07 06:56:53 PM tcoch21 Thats what we use in my facility...instead of cranyons.
2015-07-07 06:57:09 PM maninder we do coloring too
2015-07-07 06:57:10 PM anniea68 for water colors, take the page and go over the outline in clear glue- one it fries it keeps clolors from running together
2015-07-07 06:57:21 PM maninder we have a cart set up for word puzzles and coloring
2015-07-07 06:57:22 PM bcunniff11 same with us but when there is 25 residents to 1 activity staff i don't think thats safe
2015-07-07 06:57:27 PM eriksh7 We do it all. Crayons, colored pencils, & markers
2015-07-07 06:57:38 PM j9sparkley good idea with the glue anniea68
2015-07-07 06:57:41 PM sharden67 our residents like water colors....just this week at resident council they asked for more water colors....memories in the making...they certainly are very good....me well not so much
2015-07-07 06:57:46 PM kathyhughes I had to buy crayons by the case
2015-07-07 06:57:55 PM bcunniff11 i also don't think i should have my 2 employees outside when 1 should be in for 1:1s or small groups
2015-07-07 06:57:56 PM kathyhughes we went though them all the time
2015-07-07 06:58:05 PM karnak14 Yes, I like having water colors, colored pencils and the jumbo crayons that are easier to hold!
2015-07-07 06:58:08 PM kathyhughes I told staff it was for stress release
2015-07-07 06:58:18 PM colette1 good night
2015-07-07 06:58:19 PM anniea68 we are like that with markers and oil pastels
2015-07-07 06:58:25 PM tcoch21 The owner probably jealous....he cant color with them.
2015-07-07 06:58:28 PM kathyhughes and fine finger coordination
2015-07-07 06:58:31 PM karnak14 And the staff like to sit down and help! it is a win-win!
2015-07-07 06:58:31 PM kathyhughes LOL
2015-07-07 06:58:35 PM colette1 left the chat room

2015-07-07 06:59:51 PM anniea68 they tried to teach me bridge- it did not go well
2015-07-07 06:59:52 PM j9sparkley after if reminded them how to play of course
2015-07-07 06:59:58 PM karnak14 Dollar store always has them reasonable too. And when families ask if we need anything I tell them Dunkin Donuts Coffee and Art Supplies.
