2016-08-23 06:06:56 PM stephr518 Okay, thanks.
2016-08-23 06:07:05 PM crystalls8514 Oh I made it finally!!
2016-08-23 06:07:17 PM kathyhughes My residents would invite only those that they wanted
2016-08-23 06:07:30 PM dianajohnson mine too
2016-08-23 06:07:34 PM corrie same here
2016-08-23 06:07:37 PM kathyhughes and the dept heads had to respond to problems in writing
2016-08-23 06:07:46 PM crystalls8514 Is there a topic of discussion?
2016-08-23 06:07:50 PM dianajohnson YEP
2016-08-23 06:07:51 PM slittle Responding in writing is an excellent idea
2016-08-23 06:07:57 PM firstlady SAME HERE
2016-08-23 06:07:58 PM stephr518 Well, the previous AD ran the whole 5 minutes and all was fine everytime.
2016-08-23 06:07:59 PM pbaines2 The AD in my experience are not really concerned about the residents concerns unless a family memeber starts to complain. This is why I take it so serious because I personally hear their concerns, yet the powers that be passively acknowledges them, with no solution.
2016-08-23 06:08:14 PM anitas residents often ask for the administrator to attend.
2016-08-23 06:08:18 PM saraurb our residnts were acked prior to the meeting w=if certain department heads were alloweed to attned the meeting. for example the business office requested to come o the meeting when our "banking" hours changed
2016-08-23 06:08:25 PM suelinton Good job crysall you made it!
2016-08-23 06:08:28 PM saraurb they are usually ok with it though!!
2016-08-23 06:08:33 PM stephr518 So, they are now learning what their rights are for the council meeting to run appropriately.
2016-08-23 06:08:39 PM dianajohnson THE SOCIAL WORKER MYSELF AND THE ODBUDSMAN
2016-08-23 06:08:48 PM scomeau is there specifics on how resident council should be run? that i could give to my administrator because she does not want it to be a griping sessions anymore
2016-08-23 06:08:58 PM reiverkimberly In our facility, it's a given that department heads are there in order to hear any grievences from the residents
2016-08-23 06:09:16 PM kathyhughes You have to ask the residents, it is their only time to complain
2016-08-23 06:09:25 PM corrie exactly
2016-08-23 06:09:30 PM dbaxter what would the ombudsman be in canadian terms would that be the person who does nursing home inspections?
2016-08-23 06:09:31 PM dianajohnson YEP
2016-08-23 06:09:31 PM saraurb when i think of resident council, i think of concern forms!
2016-08-23 06:09:32 PM slittle Order of basic resident council meeting: those in attendance, old business, new business, budget, closing.
2016-08-23 06:09:39 PM dorisb I'd also like to know if there are any set rules about who needs to be there.
2016-08-23 06:09:55 PM preciousv resident advocate is the ombudsmen]
2016-08-23 06:10:09 PM kathyhughes No an Ombudsman is someone who volunteers to help residents with problems
2016-08-23 06:10:09 PM nursesusie It is time for the resident to give their opinion and you aare not suppose totalk back
2016-08-23 06:10:12 PM anitas we take notes , fill out a concern form, and pass it to the involved department. they usually respond back with an action to correct within a week.
2016-08-23 06:10:15 PM mgancarz most of the time thats how it works saraurb
2016-08-23 06:10:15 PM slittle Usually the resident council president, vice president, secretary, maybe a few staff
2016-08-23 06:10:24 PM suelinton I'm just listening to everyone else right now. Hearing to many people is overbearing for me! Anyone else fee the same?
2016-08-23 06:10:37 PM kathyhughes they are volunteers who have an education about listening and helping with problems
2016-08-23 06:10:37 PM dianajohnson YEP HER NAME IS JENNY AT MY WORK SHE IS AWSOME

2016-08-23 06:10:41 PM stephr518 Okay, I am being told there that I should make a copy of the minutes, highlight the department's area (blacking out the resident's name unless they give permission) and giving the minutes to that department head.
2016-08-23 06:10:42 PM crystalls8514 Resident Council looks is the topic!! We do ours once month, we are currently holding elections for our RC Presdients and working on having a more active council
2016-08-23 06:10:46 PM scomeau our administrator does not want us to focus on asking if there are comments or concerns for each department.
2016-08-23 06:10:59 PM preciousv thats the whole point lol
2016-08-23 06:11:18 PM kathyhughes I had an agenda that they all got the day before
2016-08-23 06:11:25 PM scomeau she is not happy with that and says that should not be the focus
2016-08-23 06:11:28 PM kathyhughes and we would stick to the agenda
2016-08-23 06:11:34 PM kathyhughes we also had speakers
2016-08-23 06:11:37 PM nursesusie You take a copy of the minutes and put them in your state ready folder. This is one of the things they look for.
2016-08-23 06:11:38 PM reiverkimberly I always take minutes...very detailed minutes....and then my facility has a form that I have to bullet point everything. I always attach my minute3s to it.
2016-08-23 06:11:41 PM scomeau she wants a lecturer there and give them ten minutes for any other business
2016-08-23 06:11:43 PM corrie we have specific packets that the state wants followed that we have to use each meeting and it is based on concerns and changes
2016-08-23 06:11:46 PM dbaxter Thank You!
2016-08-23 06:12:10 PM jackiebl i thought about using a mic for resident council-so many residents are hoh

2016-08-23 06:12:27 PM kathyhughes We also covered Resident Rights and had a seperate meeting for Dietary
2016-08-23 06:12:36 PM stephr518 I like the agenda idea. The ombudsman gave me a format. Thank goodness!!!
2016-08-23 06:12:38 PM corrie every group hs a couple of complainers that is just how it is
2016-08-23 06:12:41 PM pbaines2 How many of you guys have resident councils in your Memory Care Facilities?

2016-08-23 06:15:16 PM nursesusie We usually give out prizes. The residents seem to enjoythis. We have different type of bingo.
2016-08-23 06:15:20 PM crystalls8514 Our bingo money is fake (thank goodness they are so competive) and they use the money for auctions
2016-08-23 06:15:20 PM valei5 At our facility we use real money and food prizes.
2016-08-23 06:15:34 PM sueg We give out tickets and they turn them in to the Bingo store for things they need, at the end of the month.
2016-08-23 06:15:34 PM pbaines2 I work in a Memory care facility and I had the CNAs logging their activities with the residents so I could track everything. After a few complaints, they were told that it was not necessary, only in Skilled Facilities. Please advise.

2016-08-23 06:16:18 PM stephr518 pbaines, I would still keep track. That is your and your department's cya to what residents forget they just did.

2016-08-23 06:17:31 PM elimazeg Hi
2016-08-23 06:17:40 PM arepic When I play bingo on the demetia unit, I normally give out either stuffed animals or chocolate as prizes. I have found the residents are far more fond of winning the stuffed animals or other fun objects. Speaking of this, I need to go shopping for more prizes!
2016-08-23 06:17:49 PM slittle you print out special "mystery buck money" that residents win in bingo. With their winnings they can bid on paper sacks labelled with a vague idea of what's inside. For example, one paper sack will say "sweet treat" and have candy inside

2016-08-23 06:23:47 PM alyssa12 I talk to specific caregivers that i know will run the activities for me. There are a select few that really enjoy leading the activities
2016-08-23 06:23:48 PM angelasulli ask families to donate especially if their loved one is in need of music therapy.
2016-08-23 06:23:49 PM crystalls8514 For some of our ipods we reached out to Local schools for the Stud Co to work to get donations
2016-08-23 06:23:54 PM kathyhughes You never know there might be a grant just for the residents
2016-08-23 06:23:56 PM aguison usually when im off, i leave an instruction for my caregivers on what activities they can do with the residents
2016-08-23 06:23:59 PM dbaxter When I am off, most times activities are not done on my floor. When there are volunteers to porter to a larger program some on my floor may attend but if I am not there they do not get anything :(
2016-08-23 06:24:01 PM kathyhughes and you can ask families
2016-08-23 06:24:20 PM reiverkimberly stephr518.....if you need to...you can purchase portable battery operated speakers that plug into the headphone jack of your phone. We did it that way for years
2016-08-23 06:24:24 PM dianajohnson YES A GRANT THAT IS WHAT WE GOT
2016-08-23 06:24:24 PM slittle dbaxter, sounds terrible!
2016-08-23 06:24:24 PM sueg The Ipads are new to us and the residents really don't want any thing to do with them. Any suggestions?
2016-08-23 06:24:29 PM alyssa12 i will say that it is hard to get coverage for activities
2016-08-23 06:24:32 PM preciousv i asked for yarn and got nothing but i will keep trying!
2016-08-23 06:24:56 PM dorisb We depend on the caregivers on weekends to get people out. We do schedule music and church services pretty much every Saturday and Sunday.
2016-08-23 06:25:03 PM scomeau if you post something around your community to donate old ipods you might be surprised what you get
2016-08-23 06:25:05 PM aguison but mainly my residents request for movies all the time
2016-08-23 06:25:06 PM dbaxter slittle : It is. Advanced dementia floor has too many behaviors that my co workers cannot handle and refuse to handle.
2016-08-23 06:25:08 PM firstlady HOSPICE WILL HELP WITH ALOT
2016-08-23 06:25:08 PM kathyhughes I would send our lists to all the groups that came in at the holidays and local churches
2016-08-23 06:25:08 PM angelasulli if you cant get an ipod just get a cd player and cds
2016-08-23 06:25:13 PM arepic Same here dbaxter. If I or the other activities person is not working, activities are not done on the units.
2016-08-23 06:25:14 PM mwalker Last week we had our grand opening of our "Country Store" It was a success as well as a blast. The residents really enjoyed it!!!!! The win what we call "Wellness Bucks" during bingo. With the wellness bucks they spend them in the country store for items they need or may want anad they LOVE IT!!!!!
2016-08-23 06:25:19 PM isabel1 we have a bok club where we read a book, stop in the middle of a chapter, then when we come back i ask them what happened from our last reading. then in between, i ask them what so some of the words mean. like the candy-apple-red, or beige cotton. or if they remember a vintage car, so it's also a vocabulary exercise aside from memory and reminiscing and they love it
2016-08-23 06:25:30 PM saraurb thats a great idea to ask for dontations! im sure the families would be more than willing to help out!
2016-08-23 06:25:48 PM kathyhughes You have to be specific
2016-08-23 06:25:49 PM jackiebl great idea isabel!
2016-08-23 06:25:57 PM crystalls8514 For those of you that have stores in your center, where do you have it, who runs it and how often?
2016-08-23 06:26:09 PM slittle our resident council runs the store
2016-08-23 06:26:10 PM kathyhughes I also asked all groups to come in one other month during the yeat
2016-08-23 06:26:16 PM slittle they sell junk food
2016-08-23 06:26:16 PM firstlady saraurb ALSO HOSPICE WILL HELP
2016-08-23 06:26:19 PM preciousv im leaving my daughters practice will be losing wifi catch you all next time thanks for all the great tips
2016-08-23 06:26:22 PM dbaxter On the weekends we have only one AD working. Therefore only 3 of the 5 floors have an activity as they are seen as the more accessible floors. My floor and our Alzheimers unit do not get programming on the weekends.
2016-08-23 06:26:22 PM stephr518 Yes, I want to get a speaker. I have had to spend all of my budget the last two months on just building them up some with basic supplies. They had zero in their account. We now have $213 from a back to school basket fundraiser.
2016-08-23 06:26:28 PM isabel1 we are lucky that a group came today and are willing to tprovide stuff for our special events like birthday bingo, halloween parties, and so on
2016-08-23 06:26:33 PM mrsb2164 We have fundraisers to get resident funds.
2016-08-23 06:26:38 PM jackiebl our country store is set up in our activity room the day of
2016-08-23 06:26:46 PM alyssa12 left the chat room
2016-08-23 06:26:51 PM angelasulli i hate reading how much so many of you directors struggle. i struggle too but geesh! if the caregivers would just realize that the more activie the residents are the less falls and behavior issues they would have to deal with then everyone wins
2016-08-23 06:27:09 PM crystalls8514 What all do you have at your store Jackiebl?
2016-08-23 06:27:14 PM saraurb we have a few hospice companies that have been willing to help out with activities but we have to give more referrals in order to get the help from them :(
2016-08-23 06:27:16 PM jackiebl i do hate reading! just no time for it!
2016-08-23 06:27:29 PM kathyhughes Its a matter of education and letting staff know that they are also in the activities regulation
2016-08-23 06:27:34 PM mgancarz we have a traveling store that comes in every few months
2016-08-23 06:27:37 PM elimazeg We have rosary every friday in the morning and catholic mass every second tuesday of the month
2016-08-23 06:27:39 PM firstlady saraurb SORRY
2016-08-23 06:27:42 PM crystalls8514 Has anyone used Alle Learning? I just singed up with them?
2016-08-23 06:27:43 PM arepic I think if any floor is to always have activities it should be the Alzheimers unit. At least on my unit, if activities aren't happening, chaos can insue.
2016-08-23 06:27:43 PM dbaxter We get donations for bingo from families and volunteers. I also started collecting bottles around my workplace and using that money for activity supplies. I mean if your going to throw your bottles away or leave them laying around, I might as well use them
2016-08-23 06:27:47 PM stephr518 We do not have an activity room. I have to do all of my stuff set up here and take down there. I am hoping that we can work on that soon. My office is in the conference room.
2016-08-23 06:27:49 PM angelasulli true - education is key.
2016-08-23 06:28:11 PM reiverkimberly Our nursing staff won't even bother bringing someone to an activity that they know wants to go :(
2016-08-23 06:28:12 PM mgancarz tell me more crystalls8514
2016-08-23 06:28:27 PM mrsb2164 bought a Wii one time. and dvd's they can check out and use in their rooms
2016-08-23 06:28:34 PM firstlady reiverkimberly YOU ARE RIGHT
2016-08-23 06:28:35 PM pbaines2 I am in a private pay memory care facility. With the money these families have to spend for care, I feel bad asking them for anything. I feel that everything else should be inclusive.
2016-08-23 06:29:03 PM dbaxter reiverkimberly. I understand your frustrations.. I have that issue. Some are really good at bringing them out when an activity is on our floor but off unit it is hard to get assistance
2016-08-23 06:29:05 PM isabel1 families are a great source of bingo prizes and one to one supplies
2016-08-23 06:29:12 PM slittle sometimes you need to take a hard left and ask/demand a bigger budget to care for residents
2016-08-23 06:29:13 PM firstlady pbaines2 YOU WILL BE SURPRIZE
2016-08-23 06:29:14 PM angelasulli look into your local public library - they can offer a lot of help with music
2016-08-23 06:29:24 PM crystalls8514 So my Adminstrator heard about it and told me! Its basically a company that creates and lesson plans to teach to residents
2016-08-23 06:29:33 PM elimazeg But how you ask the families prices?
2016-08-23 06:29:36 PM stephr518 The residents have been coloring on adult coloring sheets and they now have 84 pictures. They are all going to be framed and we are having an auction next Tuesday night to auction off ALL of the pics. Family has been invited as well as many others. Also, with a real auctioneer.
2016-08-23 06:29:36 PM reiverkimberly the Public library is a GREAT resource
2016-08-23 06:29:51 PM elimazeg I don't know what todo because I have to improve my prices
2016-08-23 06:30:05 PM crystalls8514 https://alle-learning.com/
2016-08-23 06:30:08 PM scomeau a company i know do a spring cleaning and donate things to the activities department for bingo prizes too
2016-08-23 06:30:12 PM mgancarz thats awesome!!!!
2016-08-23 06:30:14 PM mgancarz thanks!
2016-08-23 06:30:15 PM slittle i wouldn't ask for prices. Instead I'd ask for specific items. That way they can buy more expensive or cheaper items depending on budget
2016-08-23 06:30:26 PM dorisb I love the coloring sheets and auction idea!
2016-08-23 06:30:32 PM elimazeg sounds good
2016-08-23 06:30:34 PM firstlady elimazeg Z OUTLET IS GREAT
2016-08-23 06:30:35 PM crystalls8514 It comes with a whole lesson plan, slides shows that have a talking points and engaging activities
2016-08-23 06:30:37 PM pbaines2 Wow, dbaxter. That really hurts my heart.
2016-08-23 06:30:45 PM angelasulli the coloring auction idea is great
2016-08-23 06:30:51 PM dbaxter We use the dollarstore as our place to buy prizes. It;s a cheap and effective place to buy all sorts of prizes
2016-08-23 06:31:21 PM elimazeg I have a wonderful dollar store next close to my house
2016-08-23 06:31:26 PM angie1 nursesusie never even thought of putting the minutes into the state folder I keep them and as does my reisdent council secretary thank you for this information that really will get put to use thanks again!
2016-08-23 06:31:31 PM elimazeg what kind of prices do you buy?
2016-08-23 06:31:34 PM kathyhughes We did Fall cleaning and Spring cleaning and would recycle Bingo prizes with the residents as a 1-1 activity every year
2016-08-23 06:31:35 PM jackiebl i just spent $115 at our dollar tree-got loads of stuff!
2016-08-23 06:31:39 PM pbaines2 I agree Angela. If the Facility Management does not enforce caregiver engagement, even when it is a company rule, what can you do? Only the residents suffer.
2016-08-23 06:31:42 PM dorisb Does anyone have some new ideas on how to make room visits more interesting?
2016-08-23 06:31:44 PM arepic You gotta love the dollar store. I just bought a bunch of prizes and goodies from there and didn't burn a whole in my wallet
2016-08-23 06:32:04 PM elimazeg sounds good too Kathy'
2016-08-23 06:32:04 PM scomeau we also used our supply budget to buy things for prizes when we tried using something oother than quarters
2016-08-23 06:32:07 PM crystalls8514 With Alle Learning you san sign up for free and they send you a whole sample and its really great I cant wait to do it and I always add food to my activities
2016-08-23 06:32:08 PM angelasulli yes fall and spring cleaning is great! grab the lost and found too
2016-08-23 06:32:17 PM slittle dorisb: if you use a smartphone or tablet you can pull up music, old videos, information, etc
