2019-08-07 06:06:05 PM juice24 today was the first one on ones i had with them and just met in their rooms to meet them a lil better
2019-08-07 06:06:05 PM cchase can you type your name please
2019-08-07 06:06:15 PM juice24 jason hall
2019-08-07 06:06:29 PM cchase hello jason
2019-08-07 06:06:36 PM juice24 hello
2019-08-07 06:06:43 PM juice24 whats yours
2019-08-07 06:07:36 PM cchase regs. are pretty clear about person centered activities - so you need to show that you are offering events that are of interest to your residents
2019-08-07 06:08:31 PM juice24 forsure. thats what todays one on ones was about. getting to know them and what activities they want
2019-08-07 06:08:37 PM cchase are you working with Alzheimer's/dementia residents
2019-08-07 06:08:42 PM juice24 its about them not me
2019-08-07 06:08:58 PM juice24 and yes. theres a few
2019-08-07 06:09:18 PM cchase be sure to make time to read social worker notes in charts - usually really helpful in providing background info
2019-08-07 06:09:25 PM juice24 well a few ive spoke with for awhile
2019-08-07 06:09:34 PM cchase what do you offer your Alz res.??
2019-08-07 06:11:01 PM juice24 i honestly havent got that far. its just my second week so ive been doing stuff that the staff was doing with them. there wasnt anyone in this position for some time now and im still catching up
2019-08-07 06:11:55 PM cchase well - that's alot to do... let's learn about Alz- have you taken any courses about it
2019-08-07 06:13:19 PM cchase what do you know about Alzheimer's?
2019-08-07 06:14:30 PM cassandrac enter the chat room
2019-08-07 06:15:12 PM cchase jason are you there?
2019-08-07 06:15:21 PM juice24 .im pretty sure ive read something on it but i think its when the brain starts to break down
2019-08-07 06:16:13 PM cchase hey cassandra - we started about fifteen mins. ago.
2019-08-07 06:16:14 PM juice24 something like that i hope lol
2019-08-07 06:16:44 PM cchase I can try to fill in some gaps on it for you
2019-08-07 06:17:17 PM cchase Alz can be present in the brain some ten years before it is discovered
2019-08-07 06:17:56 PM juice24 the big thing i know is you lose your memory
2019-08-07 06:17:58 PM cchase nasty plaques and tangles form and cut of the pathway for neurons to communicate with each other
2019-08-07 06:18:03 PM cassandrac Sorry was trying to get my computer to work
2019-08-07 06:18:39 PM cchase those neurons give instructions on just about everything the brain controls including memory and body functions
2019-08-07 06:19:17 PM cchase when they fail to communicate is when we see the symptoms of dementia and other deficits
2019-08-07 06:19:45 PM cchase eventually the brain cannot even tell the body how to function
2019-08-07 06:19:59 PM cchase it is a progressive disease with no known cure
2019-08-07 06:21:04 PM cchase it has some hereditary lineage - if someone in the family had it your risk is higher to have it as well
2019-08-07 06:21:20 PM cchase ok questions folks??
2019-08-07 06:22:02 PM cassandrac Is there away they can test someone to see if they are at risk?
2019-08-07 06:22:21 PM juice24 wow. they were telling me about one of the residents and saying that shes going back to childhood memories and thsts all she talks about now
2019-08-07 06:23:00 PM juice24 its crazy how they live a long life and only remember the earliest stuff in their life
2019-08-07 06:23:21 PM cassandrac yes
2019-08-07 06:23:31 PM cchase there are gene testing to see if you are at risk for it... and recently heard there may be a blood test coming soon
2019-08-07 06:24:50 PM juice24 i read cbd may be able to help slow the progressing of it
2019-08-07 06:24:54 PM cchase the childhood memories were likely stored before the disease did extensive damage to memory retreival functions. many seniors do remember childhood like it just recently happened
2019-08-07 06:25:22 PM juice24 wow that makes sense
2019-08-07 06:25:33 PM cassandrac I dont really hear anyone thinking about going and get tested
2019-08-07 06:25:57 PM cchase there is still alot of speculation on anything that really works... the jury is still out on the possible treatments effectiveness
2019-08-07 06:26:27 PM cchase long term memories are those childhood moments.
2019-08-07 06:27:01 PM cchase short term memories are those that just occured... within the last 3 to 5 mins are forgotten
2019-08-07 06:27:48 PM cassandrac They talk about thier childhood. Dont really talk about thier kids
2019-08-07 06:27:55 PM cchase the disease is so advanced that new memories can not be stored hence short term memory problems
2019-08-07 06:28:31 PM cchase the childhood would have occured before children...
2019-08-07 06:28:41 PM cassandrac oh
2019-08-07 06:29:02 PM cchase some actually no longer recognize their children eventually
2019-08-07 06:29:27 PM juice24 thats the super sad part of this
2019-08-07 06:29:54 PM cchase yes
2019-08-07 06:30:18 PM cassandrac yes and some of them have a hard time with this
2019-08-07 06:30:36 PM cchase families feel that they loose their loved ones twice
2019-08-07 06:31:06 PM damonj enter the chat room
2019-08-07 06:31:19 PM damonj left the chat room
2019-08-07 06:31:22 PM cchase once with the disease - and then again when they pass away
2019-08-07 06:31:27 PM cassandrac We try and support them.
2019-08-07 06:32:15 PM juice24 thats all you can do at that point
2019-08-07 06:32:26 PM cchase what activities do you offer your alz residents cassandra?
2019-08-07 06:33:27 PM juice24 well i will say that we played a trivia game 2 days ago. i guess that can be an activity that helps them
2019-08-07 06:34:02 PM cassandrac we read to them about what happen in theit time. Sometime we play music that they might know.
2019-08-07 06:34:37 PM cchase great oldie music is a good choice
2019-08-07 06:35:01 PM cchase think of childhood eras they lived in
2019-08-07 06:35:23 PM cassandrac ok
2019-08-07 06:35:58 PM cchase they cannot remember plots to tv shows or movies... so loose the story
2019-08-07 06:36:18 PM cchase charlie chaplin seems to hit a funny bone
2019-08-07 06:36:27 PM cassandrac What other ideals would be good for them?
2019-08-07 06:36:37 PM juice24 ???
2019-08-07 06:36:52 PM cchase do you know charlie chaplin Jason?

2019-08-07 06:37:09 PM cassandrac ok
2019-08-07 06:37:25 PM cchase usually black & white - kinda slap stick comedic stuff
2019-08-07 06:37:37 PM cchase little rascals is another
2019-08-07 06:37:48 PM cchase leave it to beaver
2019-08-07 06:37:53 PM juice24 ive heard the name but never seen him
2019-08-07 06:38:07 PM cchase just google old time comedy shows
2019-08-07 06:38:28 PM cchase music.... exercises are also important
2019-08-07 06:38:39 PM cassandrac yes
2019-08-07 06:38:43 PM cchase a routine that is the same is super important
2019-08-07 06:39:05 PM cchase they need a stable pattern each day
2019-08-07 06:39:07 PM juice24 gotcha
2019-08-07 06:39:29 PM cchase no surprises... they worry when they do not know what is suppose to happen
2019-08-07 06:39:54 PM juice24 we have a contract with the library and ill ask if she has some of these movies and him
2019-08-07 06:40:12 PM cchase balloon toss is a great exercise.... use rigid balloons found on senior supply sites.
2019-08-07 06:40:25 PM cchase good thinking jason
2019-08-07 06:40:35 PM cassandrac oh we do that sometimes
2019-08-07 06:40:45 PM juice24 we play noodle ball
2019-08-07 06:40:47 PM cchase some still know how to knit or crochet
2019-08-07 06:41:29 PM cchase doing place settings or stacking things like cups or sorting things like socks
2019-08-07 06:41:31 PM cchase folding
2019-08-07 06:41:56 PM cchase always explain what is suppose to happen
2019-08-07 06:42:07 PM cchase we are going to the funny movie
2019-08-07 06:42:29 PM cchase distract them when they are doing something you do not want them to do
2019-08-07 06:42:38 PM cchase known as redirection
