2017-08-15 06:09:56 PM lynmyhre Sept 6 is read a book day...it might be fun to bring in some younger kids to be read to or to read to residents...show of their skills.
2017-08-15 06:09:59 PM cynkarnes76 I want to try to incorporate my teenage volunteers by having them pick a school project and present it or work with a resident at Cokesbury but have no idea how to make the idea a reality
2017-08-15 06:10:04 PM nicolespangler We did kabob "Hawaiian Kabobs" for our lua

2017-08-15 06:11:00 PM dianej Whis week I have doing a colts football preseason kick off because one of my residents loves the colts so much. Then the next week we are having a baby shower for one of our CNA's I will have the residents ice cupcakes, wrap the present, decorate and then we will all celebrate

2017-08-15 06:11:11 PM taylorweitzel97 do you guys have any suggestions in how to build up a volenteer program in a small town?

2017-08-15 06:12:04 PM nikki06 small town radios are usually looking for stories and guests
2017-08-15 06:12:09 PM lwright I am in a small town too and our radio wnts to charge
2017-08-15 06:12:09 PM rcgarcia73 volunteers are a bit of a problem in big cities also
2017-08-15 06:12:10 PM nikki06 :)
2017-08-15 06:12:10 PM lynmyhre Make a hat day is Sept 15...but only a few residents would have both the physical ability and the mental patience/creativity to make hats. But a simple hat that they could paint would fall in just fine...
2017-08-15 06:12:20 PM melissamartin Taylor try your local high school, the seniors need community service hours to graduate
2017-08-15 06:12:21 PM vgreen kathyhughes Thanks, what is expected of me in this chat room? I am still at work and need to do assessments prior to leaving (NO OT allowed). How long is chat time?
2017-08-15 06:12:29 PM slooney lyn, what about fabric markers and plain ball caps?
2017-08-15 06:12:30 PM nikki06 lwright, that sticks :( our was happy to have us on
2017-08-15 06:12:31 PM rcgarcia73 need to have better control over them
2017-08-15 06:12:53 PM cynkarnes76 taylorweitzel97 Are you in contact with local high school?
2017-08-15 06:13:04 PM kathyhughes Volanda when you have time to chat then join us,,the chat is 1 hour and you have to participate
2017-08-15 06:13:13 PM taylorweitzel97 yeah we have reached out to them but beasue the volenteer application process and backaround check isnt very fast, they go to the next volenteer oppurtunity. so i might have to look into how my company can speed up the backaround check process
2017-08-15 06:13:19 PM taylorweitzel97 great idea though!
2017-08-15 06:13:25 PM ginadilas We did a huge article in the local paper on volunteering and it didnt bring in any new voluteers. Sometimes small towns dont have enough volunteers to go around the whole community
2017-08-15 06:13:41 PM taylorweitzel97 ahh good point!
2017-08-15 06:13:41 PM melissamartin Try contacting churches also.
2017-08-15 06:13:45 PM kathyhughes What do you want the volunteers to do???
2017-08-15 06:13:46 PM virginia food ball is always a good thing in texas and in a small town everyone is into high school food ball and pep rallys
2017-08-15 06:13:56 PM lynmyhre Ball caps and markers would be easy...and could keep them for the sunny warm fall days...
2017-08-15 06:13:57 PM jhirczak What about article in your facility newsletter?
2017-08-15 06:14:02 PM rcgarcia73 i copy most of my ideas from classmates...everyone here has awsome ideas
2017-08-15 06:14:12 PM dianej We have Townhouses and condos were people live who can pretty much do everything on their own. Many will volunteer some to do things like push wheelchairs, call Bingo, play Uno, or sit with the residents outside.
2017-08-15 06:14:16 PM cynkarnes76 taylorweitzel97 my AD doesn't do a background check for volunteers, there might be a loophole
2017-08-15 06:14:25 PM yogini ANY IDEA WHERE TO LOOK FOR CHAT CREDITS, THIS MAY BE MY 13 TH CHAT
2017-08-15 06:14:43 PM nicolespangler I struggle with having enough volunteers in the school year, because most of mine are highschool student. Any suggestions, or anyone else dealing with the same situation?
2017-08-15 06:14:50 PM lwright I would love to have more pets/ therapy animals but my company is very strict and there aren't a lot around who qualify
2017-08-15 06:14:52 PM nikiawyche robert here is a good idea from last night table hockey, get a round tube of gum and some dusters from the dollar store
2017-08-15 06:14:56 PM nikki06 if you are a CCRC, sometimes IL residents are interested in volunteering. I work inn the healthcare of a CCRC and That is where the majority of my volunteers come from. IL and the local college. The colleges have classes requiring service learning hours.
2017-08-15 06:15:09 PM slooney same here, we need a strong volunteer program but the background and training is a time killer
2017-08-15 06:15:11 PM jhirczak I have the same situation. Highschool students for a short time
2017-08-15 06:15:21 PM mmoreland how often do you do karaoke with with the residents
2017-08-15 06:15:25 PM kathyhughes yogini I CAN CHECK...YOU NEED TO EMIAL ME WITH YOUR CLASS AND i CAN UPDATE YOUR GRADES
2017-08-15 06:15:26 PM taylorweitzel97 we recently got a lot of cut in hours in my department, so really anything helps! one on one program and doing some activities would be helpful! my company mandates that all volenteers must go through a backaround check proess first. ill look into it further though
2017-08-15 06:15:27 PM rcgarcia73 cool nikia
2017-08-15 06:15:28 PM cynkarnes76 I am having my volunteers do hands on and run activities like today, my high schooler ran the Trivia game to the room and used the TV for visual effects. I also, jumped in when I could
2017-08-15 06:15:38 PM ginadilas Kathy I would love volunteers to run like worship groups , bible Studies, some of the more religious things because my staff is not religious at all. They feel very unconfortable reading a bible they dont believe in.
2017-08-15 06:15:42 PM vgreen kathyhughes Thanks, I am not a Chat room person, How do i particiapte. conversations are all over the place?
2017-08-15 06:15:47 PM marias we have volunteer for mens club im happy to have him
2017-08-15 06:15:53 PM nikiawyche try reaching out to the school early and set up something explain that they will be able to volunteer but it a proceess
2017-08-15 06:15:57 PM mdh4677 enter the chat room
2017-08-15 06:15:58 PM cynkarnes76 Robert: you are so right on everyone having great ideas!!!!!!! There are way too many to remember

2017-08-15 06:16:14 PM marias its only for men
2017-08-15 06:16:22 PM mdh4677 Good evening people
2017-08-15 06:16:29 PM lynmyhre We have community clergy and church volunteers come inf or services...we had a Catholic Annointing of the sick this week.
2017-08-15 06:16:35 PM nikiawyche I keep a note pad at the computer to just write down ideas
2017-08-15 06:16:38 PM rcgarcia73 its hard to keep up at first but read fast and let your fingers do the talking
2017-08-15 06:16:39 PM nikiawyche from every chat
2017-08-15 06:16:41 PM dianej I think sometimes people don't fully understand what is needed so they are afraid to commit. This year we decided to put a lot of people in our parade and the we had a lot of residents sit by the road and watch. We posted on facebook that we needed helpers to push and I was so amazed at how many wonderful people showed up to help
2017-08-15 06:16:48 PM maria7293 WE HAVE VOLUNTARY MAN GROUP CAME EVERY MONTH IN MY FACILITY
2017-08-15 06:17:03 PM jadams69 kathy i sent you an email about 2 weeks ago and some of my grades were changed, some were not. Do i need to send another email or wait a little longer ??
2017-08-15 06:17:11 PM slooney We no longer have a veteran's group but I'd love to restart one

2017-08-15 06:17:28 PM kathyhughes People will volunteer if they have a specific job to di
2017-08-15 06:17:39 PM lynmyhre As a veteran, I'd like to have a veteran group.
2017-08-15 06:17:46 PM cynkarnes76 taylorweitzel97 feel free to email me and I can ask my AD further on the loophole cynkarnes@gmail.com
2017-08-15 06:17:49 PM nikiawyche that is true and if you communicate with them
2017-08-15 06:18:07 PM jcking i just started a veteran's group
2017-08-15 06:18:13 PM kathyhughes Yes Jadams..please email me on Friday and I will look into it...but you have to let me know which class you are in
2017-08-15 06:18:13 PM slooney how'd it go?
2017-08-15 06:18:16 PM taylorweitzel97 thank you I will do that :)
2017-08-15 06:18:16 PM yogini I WILL EMAIL YOU TONIGHT, I JUST HAVE ASSIGNMENT 6 AND ONE ASSIGNMENT ON 4 LEFT, MY MIDTERM PRACTICUM ARE ALMOST AT THE FINISHING POINT AND I HAVE STARTED WORKIN ON ASSIGNMENTS BEYOND 8TH ASSIGNMENT
2017-08-15 06:18:30 PM maria7293 ME TOO
2017-08-15 06:18:32 PM mdh4677 what are we talking abot tonight
2017-08-15 06:18:34 PM jcking i would like to have younger vets come in and talk
2017-08-15 06:18:45 PM slooney jcking where'd you start?
2017-08-15 06:18:46 PM jadams69 dianej - we had a parade in our facility and used the staff and some residents ... the other residents loved it.
2017-08-15 06:18:48 PM kathyhughes We were talking about volunteers
2017-08-15 06:18:48 PM rcgarcia73 try the USO
2017-08-15 06:18:50 PM maria7293 lOL
2017-08-15 06:19:06 PM ginadilas I have one lady that comes in and helps with Bible study but she reads froma childrens Bible story book and some of the residents thinks she is treating them like children. How do i finform her of that without making her mad?
2017-08-15 06:19:06 PM kathyhughes and finding them specific jobs for them to do
2017-08-15 06:19:08 PM slooney I've called our local vet affairs office but haven't gotten anywhere
2017-08-15 06:19:13 PM jadams69 Ok Kathy. No problem. thank you
2017-08-15 06:19:16 PM virginia we have diffrent preachers come each week to visit the staff dosent have to be on the reading
2017-08-15 06:19:17 PM nikki06 I have a volunteer handbook that they all recieve during orientations, it has pages of "volunteer opportunities" that lists time commitments, skills needed, job requirements, etc. they can choose something from the list or come up with their own if they had something different inn mind. I find having that set lists gets people to commit more and stay consistent.
2017-08-15 06:19:30 PM dianej That is true. And I don't think they realize how just the littlest thing is so important and helpful. For example, the state is always on us about taking people ourside. We have a wonderful gated courtyard but still cannot leave residents alone. Having a volunteer just sit with them so we can get as many out as possible is soooo helpful.
2017-08-15 06:19:37 PM jcking as it turns out, alll our men are veterans. we get together and they love to tell their stories.
2017-08-15 06:19:50 PM tristageisler left the chat room
2017-08-15 06:19:51 PM taylorweitzel97 oh thats a great idea Nikki!
2017-08-15 06:19:54 PM maria7293 I HAVE SCHOOL VOLUNTARY PEOPLE ALL TIMES!!
2017-08-15 06:20:04 PM maria7293 8-|
2017-08-15 06:20:05 PM lynmyhre I recently had a woman (friend of a resident's wife) come in asking to be matched with just one person...So, as I am new and still learning about residents, I am asking staff to help me find the right match. She will then visit weekly (or more).
2017-08-15 06:20:06 PM taylorweitzel97 i love hearing all of your ideas, its great!
2017-08-15 06:20:14 PM virginia and it is very hot out side sometimes
2017-08-15 06:20:22 PM slooney Do you think the vets need additional moral support
2017-08-15 06:20:24 PM lynmyhre Our CORI checks are all electronic now...very quick.
2017-08-15 06:20:27 PM rcgarcia73 in texas its hot all the time
2017-08-15 06:20:35 PM jhirczak Mornings are a good time for a Patio Chit Chat
2017-08-15 06:20:36 PM kathyhughes If you are looking for Veterans to volunteer then you need to call the local Veterans organizations and take your residents to their events
2017-08-15 06:20:36 PM rcgarcia73 i do think so slooney
2017-08-15 06:20:36 PM dianej I wish we could get more men volunteers. It would be great to have them talk sports or farming to the other men. I feel men get overlooked a lot as they are always surrounded by women.
2017-08-15 06:20:44 PM mdh4677 I have volunteers coming alot around the holiday. A few durning the rest of the here.
2017-08-15 06:20:55 PM maria7293 YE I LIVING IN DALLAS TX IS IN 103 all times
2017-08-15 06:20:57 PM virginia so hard to do things outside
2017-08-15 06:20:58 PM jcking sounds good Kathy.
2017-08-15 06:21:24 PM slooney you're right Dianej
2017-08-15 06:21:25 PM ginadilas We can not leave our volunteers with a group of residents with out a staff person present because of safety reasons
2017-08-15 06:21:36 PM kathyhughes I solved that problem a long time ago...when they wanted to come in in Dec I told them they had to pick another month as well or they could not come in
2017-08-15 06:21:50 PM kathyhughes I had a list with each month and activities that they could do
2017-08-15 06:21:51 PM lynmyhre I do think Vets need moral support because they often see themselves as expected to be tough...and have a hard time with feeling pain or feeling limited. ANd bringining in younger vets would help validate their feelings and raise their spirits. Especially if the younger vets know how to show respect and to ask about the seniors expriences and ADVICE!
2017-08-15 06:22:01 PM cynkarnes76 nikki06 Nikki06, can I have your email so I can ask you about that some time?
2017-08-15 06:22:09 PM nikiawyche Kathy I do that sometimes to the school students
2017-08-15 06:22:12 PM maria7293 we need be there all times , some residents, they need supervision all time wit chair alarms
2017-08-15 06:22:14 PM marias the retierd people some of them love to volunteer thats is what we have
2017-08-15 06:22:19 PM slooney I'm thinking of more like a counselor...
2017-08-15 06:22:35 PM nikiawyche I normally reach out in September for them to come show off their halloween costumes
2017-08-15 06:22:41 PM jcking I think young and older veterans would have great converstions
2017-08-15 06:22:42 PM kathyhughes You have to be specific when you tell them
2017-08-15 06:23:15 PM slooney I'm going to see about bringing young and old vets together... maybe we can do a micro-community event
2017-08-15 06:23:15 PM nikiawyche last year i had a a few different groups join in our trunk treat party
2017-08-15 06:23:18 PM vgreen I need to find activities for patients that are homeless and smoke alot of weed.
2017-08-15 06:23:19 PM lynmyhre As a younger vet (but not young...hah) I am still in awe of what my elders did in wars past.
2017-08-15 06:23:27 PM kathyhughes There is Trunk or Treat for community groups which is a great event
2017-08-15 06:23:30 PM lwright Girl Scouts, 4-H, Cub Scouts are a good place for volunteerst too
2017-08-15 06:23:34 PM mdh4677 Our building is right next to a big church and it's so hard to get them more involved with our facility.
2017-08-15 06:23:39 PM yogini WE ARE CONCENTRATING ON 60 PLUS ALERT AND EXPERIENCED INDIVIDUAL WHO ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO KEEP THEM BUSY WITH PASSION IN THEIR ATTITUDE AND WORK ETHICS, SO FAR WE HAVE BEEN LUCKY. HIGH SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS ARE MOSTLY SHORT TIMERS, WE KEEP THEM FOR WATER PITCHERS LIKE CANDY STRIPING, SERVING FOOD AND THIS AND THAT
2017-08-15 06:23:42 PM rcgarcia73 trunk or treat?
2017-08-15 06:23:45 PM dianej I feel like I am pushing people somewhere all the time. Its hard to find retired people who are still physically able to push wheelchairs but its wonderful when we do. Do you guys every do something special for your volunteers? For example, we do a volunteer luncheon once a year.
2017-08-15 06:24:01 PM ginadilas I have been taking residnets on picnics to local parks twice a week during the summer months to get them outside and away fromt he building. They love it. I is hard because we ahve so many that wanna go all the time and i have to take turns.
2017-08-15 06:24:08 PM kathyhughes Marta have you taken the residents to their church service?
2017-08-15 06:24:09 PM nikiawyche kathy i will look into that
2017-08-15 06:24:14 PM jcking why vgreen?
2017-08-15 06:24:46 PM vgreen My facility takes a lot of homeless people, and people that smoke
2017-08-15 06:25:18 PM jadams69 cynkarnes76 I guess I must be fortunate to ave the volunteers i have. They help out with parties, games, church, decorating for holidays...
2017-08-15 06:25:23 PM virginia we have a trick are treat wher the poeple sat out in th hall and dress up the kids come and get cqndy are treats from them we provide the treats
2017-08-15 06:25:23 PM mdh4677 No I haven't just cause we don't work sunday. But I will see if there is another day and time that I can take them.
2017-08-15 06:25:26 PM melissamartin vgreen I would do the food Natl activity events
2017-08-15 06:25:29 PM valencia9 enter the chat room
2017-08-15 06:25:34 PM lynmyhre We have services in or facility. We do not have transportation yet. If we had a situation where a resident insisted on going out, and had not family/friend connection...we'd have to reserve a local bus. I wonder if I emailed my local car dealer if they'd donate a mini-van
2017-08-15 06:25:58 PM kathyhughes They should have other services and ask if the residents can help them
2017-08-15 06:25:58 PM taylorweitzel97 we had a resident who discharged and went home, her and her husband come in once a month to sing and dance for our residents and they adore it! its the cutest thing ever.
2017-08-15 06:25:59 PM nicolespangler @dinaej We do a volunteer appreciation brekfast or luncheon. every quarter
2017-08-15 06:26:07 PM maria7293 kathy, how many times a week i can get the church on my facility?
2017-08-15 06:26:15 PM mdh4677 Good idea
2017-08-15 06:26:18 PM jhirczak We have a spiritual care coordinator that organizes all our religious programs
2017-08-15 06:26:21 PM dianej How many hours a week do your facilities have an activities person? We now have our weekly staff like me Monday thru friday. We then have evening activities girls from 4 -8 and then we have weekends. eAch of us has to work one weekend about every 7 weeks
2017-08-15 06:26:29 PM kathyhughes As many as the residents would like
2017-08-15 06:26:30 PM rcgarcia73 hey thats a good ideas nicole
2017-08-15 06:26:33 PM vgreen Melissamartin-the food natl activity events, what is that?
2017-08-15 06:26:40 PM ginadilas I have lost a lot of volunteers because the former activity director was friends with most of them and when she retired they never came back.
2017-08-15 06:26:48 PM maria7293 thank u kathy
2017-08-15 06:26:49 PM kathyhughes depends on your residents and what they need and what they are interested in
2017-08-15 06:26:58 PM taylorweitzel97 we only have 66 hours total now that only allows me and a part time assistant to do everything!
2017-08-15 06:27:10 PM rcgarcia73 my residents only interest is food...or so it appears
2017-08-15 06:27:16 PM cynkarnes76 I have been helping my AD with coordinating the student volunteers but having a hard time designing that program and getting the kids to commit to a time slot or let me know when they are coming. I am trying something new before sept 1st by designing time slots and a calendar book and asking my AD or other AA to back me up on emails, etc.
2017-08-15 06:27:22 PM lynmyhre how many residents, Taylorweitzel97?
2017-08-15 06:27:24 PM jcking my facility is adding a 4th activity professional. so glad
2017-08-15 06:27:26 PM ginadilas We have 608 hours right now with 78 beds
2017-08-15 06:27:27 PM dianej ginadilas...I have seen that happen. We have lost a few as well when someone quits or changes jobs
