2018-12-06 06:58:24 PM kathyhughes Hello All
2018-12-06 06:58:28 PM kathyhughes How are you doing?
2018-12-06 06:58:32 PM andrealonge Hi Kathy
2018-12-06 06:59:02 PM andrealonge not too bad. How're you?
2018-12-06 06:59:09 PM kathyhughes I am doing great
2018-12-06 06:59:13 PM dianea1781 hi everyone
2018-12-06 06:59:22 PM kathyhughes Hello
2018-12-06 06:59:48 PM kathyhughes How are the assignments going?
2018-12-06 07:00:33 PM kathyhughes I am guessing that everyone is busy this month!
2018-12-06 07:00:53 PM scoltey I'm having some trouble. I have not had a lot of time to do them and one asks for me to read articles but I can't get the. I emailed you earlier this week about that
2018-12-06 07:01:01 PM dianea1781 good i submitted my midterm practicum packet last week but no grade yet, do those take awhile to grade?
2018-12-06 07:01:03 PM melodywhipple my own are okay, but I'm having trouble nailing down my ED and DON for interviews and signing off
2018-12-06 07:01:10 PM scoltey Busy but I need to keep momentum going
2018-12-06 07:01:14 PM kathyhughes Stephanie,
2018-12-06 07:01:33 PM andrealonge I'm really just getting into the groove of things. Harder for me to complete assignments at work without interruption and home is quite busy too (I have two children 5 and 2) and my husband works evenings.

2018-12-06 07:01:46 PM kathyhughes As you are in the Paced course, there is no hurry. I believe I did look at the links and was able to access them
2018-12-06 07:02:36 PM kathyhughes It does take time to grade the Practicum assignments, but I will get them done
2018-12-06 07:02:37 PM scoltey Do you have a paid subscription? I don't and it looked like they were supposed to have some free ones. I tried a couple times
2018-12-06 07:02:40 PM awalden Hi everyone!
2018-12-06 07:02:48 PM dianea1781 ok thanks
2018-12-06 07:02:51 PM andrealonge I am in the at your own pace for that reason.
2018-12-06 07:03:00 PM scoltey Me too Andrea.
2018-12-06 07:03:09 PM andrealonge hi Steph :-)
2018-12-06 07:03:13 PM scoltey Hi!
2018-12-06 07:03:25 PM awalden I'm in the own pace too!
2018-12-06 07:03:27 PM kathyhughes I do not have a paid subscription and would not have you go to the page if you had to pay for it
2018-12-06 07:03:28 PM awalden Finally made it on to a chat
2018-12-06 07:03:50 PM kathyhughes So I am not sure what the issue may be , but I will look into it
2018-12-06 07:03:55 PM scoltey Ok thanks.
2018-12-06 07:04:09 PM andrealonge for which assignment steph?
2018-12-06 07:04:13 PM kathyhughes I can find other sites
2018-12-06 07:05:16 PM kathyhughes What are you all planning for National Activity Professionals Week....starting Jan 21st?
2018-12-06 07:05:38 PM scoltey I don't have it in front of me but it's like the second item on the midterm pack
2018-12-06 07:05:56 PM andrealonge oh.... I haven't ventured that far
2018-12-06 07:06:18 PM dianea1781 My E.D. usually plans a specisal lunch for me and my activity staff
2018-12-06 07:07:11 PM andrealonge to be honest Kathy I haven't given it thought. Our facility is under major construction and i'm being pulled in multiple directions to support the residents through this hard transition. We've been under construction for over a year now and will not be completed until the end of next summer at the earliest.
2018-12-06 07:07:30 PM melodywhipple I am a one woman show, so I hope it is something my ED will do lol
2018-12-06 07:07:31 PM scoltey I have not planned anything for AP week. Generally the administrator plans something for us. Last year he let us pick where we wanted lunch and gave us a gift card. It was very nice.
2018-12-06 07:07:35 PM andrealonge I would love to hear some easy to pull off ideas. My team certainly deserves recognition.
2018-12-06 07:07:36 PM kathyhughes Stephanie, if it is the Practicum assignment.... Find at least 4 articles on the Internet aboutLeadership Skills, besides Mind Tools and share themwith your fellow students in the “PracticumAssignment Forum” in the classroom.
2018-12-06 07:07:49 PM kathyhughes You are to do a search on the Internet for other sites about Leaderhip
2018-12-06 07:07:50 PM awalden I'm not currently working, but volunteering at a personal care faciltiy for my practicum. The AD there runs the whole dept on her own, so I was thinking of doing something special for her, like making her a little gift basket with a gift card or something. She just had a baby on Thanksgving so maybe some new mama stuff too :)
2018-12-06 07:08:38 PM scoltey I did that Kathy. I posted that this week. It's a link where we are supposed to read the articles. I can't get them. It pops up and says here are your two options to puechase a subscription
2018-12-06 07:09:13 PM kathyhughes We made displays about our activities and had resident make Thank you cards for my staff and all the residents signed them
2018-12-06 07:09:14 PM andrealonge Is the midterm around section 8?
2018-12-06 07:09:42 PM scoltey I am also not sure I am doing everything I am supposed to be doing. I'm looking at the midterm pack and I just completed section 2.
2018-12-06 07:10:01 PM andrealonge phew!
2018-12-06 07:10:36 PM andrealonge I like the idea of personalized cards... that's a nice gesture.
2018-12-06 07:10:54 PM kathyhughes The Mid term Practicum is due when you have gotten to section 8
2018-12-06 07:11:23 PM dianea1781 Any ideas on what i should do for my staff?
2018-12-06 07:11:29 PM scoltey I know it's due then but i find it prudent to pick at things when I can.
2018-12-06 07:11:41 PM awalden I like the card idea too! The pastor where I used to work had all my old residents sign a card for me before I left. I still have it!
2018-12-06 07:11:46 PM andrealonge Maybe when I find sometime after Christmas I can get on Pinterest and come up with an idea or two for professionals week
2018-12-06 07:11:49 PM scoltey I'm starting to collect thigs I need for it now.
2018-12-06 07:12:02 PM andrealonge that's smart Steph!
2018-12-06 07:12:12 PM scoltey Thanks.
2018-12-06 07:12:46 PM kathyhughes There are several ideas out there to celebrate
2018-12-06 07:12:54 PM melodywhipple I am hoping to hire a part time person so ideas would be great
2018-12-06 07:13:32 PM kathyhughes We did an inservice that week for the staff and included the residents ...we also had a luncheon for the department
2018-12-06 07:14:35 PM kathyhughes What do you have planned for New Years Eve?
2018-12-06 07:14:57 PM cantrellyard enter the chat room
2018-12-06 07:15:15 PM awalden The facility where I am volunteering has a new years at noon party and special lunch
2018-12-06 07:15:18 PM andrealonge we're doing something similar next week for the holiday. We have about 35 people (residents and my staff of 6) all gathering for a luncheon as a way to show our appreciation for the holliday season and to celebrate
2018-12-06 07:15:21 PM cantrellyard good evening
2018-12-06 07:15:27 PM scoltey I have a toast to the new year on new years eve then a day of games on new years day.
2018-12-06 07:15:36 PM kathyhughes Hello Angela
2018-12-06 07:15:50 PM dianea1781 We hand out noise makers and hats a dinner time and do a toast, most of my residents cant stay up that late lol
2018-12-06 07:16:06 PM awalden last year I did a sparkling cider toast, we all made resolutions, and talked about highlights from the year
2018-12-06 07:16:07 PM kathyhughes Does anyone watch the Parade with the residents on New Years Day???
2018-12-06 07:16:09 PM scoltey I'm taking my staff out to dinner on 12/20 so I will not be logging in that night unless I get back in time. I might.
2018-12-06 07:16:32 PM andrealonge We have a DIY ball drop and we sing songs and discuss news years traditions. We also toast the event with sparking cider
2018-12-06 07:16:32 PM kathyhughes Please do not worry...we will not be having chat that night
2018-12-06 07:16:40 PM scoltey ok
2018-12-06 07:16:48 PM cantrellyard we plann a New Years party in the day with trivia about the past year. with noise makers and hats and games
2018-12-06 07:16:58 PM scoltey I did the Thanksgiving parade so I wanted to change it up
2018-12-06 07:17:18 PM awalden we usually left the parade on for residents to watch in common areas
2018-12-06 07:17:44 PM melodywhipple we will have sparkling cider, games and play a movie
2018-12-06 07:18:11 PM kathyhughes Which movie???
2018-12-06 07:18:20 PM andrealonge we also spend a bit of time discussing the friends we've lost (residents in the community) that year and sharing things we learned from them and other happier memories. It doesn't feel like a funeral service... more like a nice reminisce.
2018-12-06 07:18:34 PM kathyhughes We would have a New Years Day Breakfast with the parade
2018-12-06 07:18:42 PM scoltey Oh we have Oceans 11 on the Sunday before which is sort of new years like
2018-12-06 07:19:10 PM kathyhughes We also make predictions for the upcoming year and would read the ones we made the year before
2018-12-06 07:19:24 PM dianea1781 ive lost too many of my favorite residents this year
2018-12-06 07:19:43 PM kathyhughes So sorry for your loss
2018-12-06 07:19:47 PM scoltey This is my forst new years in activities
2018-12-06 07:19:58 PM cantrellyard we have also thats the hard part about this job
2018-12-06 07:20:02 PM melodywhipple I would like to find the movie O god that George Burns and John Denver starred in , does anyone think that is too morbid?
2018-12-06 07:20:08 PM awalden One year we hired a magician to come in for our new years eve party, that was so much fun!
2018-12-06 07:20:29 PM kathyhughes No it is a good movie....Holiday Inn is based on New Years
2018-12-06 07:20:32 PM andrealonge we've had a magician come for a different social event... he was a hit
2018-12-06 07:20:59 PM scoltey Melodywhipple I think it's a good movie. They will probably enjoy the music
2018-12-06 07:21:01 PM melodywhipple Thanks i will reserve that one
2018-12-06 07:21:06 PM cantrellyard we had a magician also they loved it
2018-12-06 07:21:07 PM dianea1781 ive only had one magician come in and he was terrible lol thought it was a good idea but didnt work for us
2018-12-06 07:21:10 PM andrealonge anyone bake a new years cake with the baby (or the bean) and share the story abou the meaning?
2018-12-06 07:21:31 PM kathyhughes We would make them for Mardi Gras
2018-12-06 07:21:37 PM kathyhughes the King cake
2018-12-06 07:21:43 PM dianea1781 we do that for mardi gras too
2018-12-06 07:21:44 PM scoltey Andrea with my luck someone woud choke on it. lol
2018-12-06 07:22:24 PM kathyhughes We would place a different color batter in one place in the cake and the person that got that color would be the King for the year
2018-12-06 07:22:48 PM cantrellyard thats cool
2018-12-06 07:23:05 PM scoltey I received one when I was a SW from an assisted living and I'm telling you I had good luck that year!
2018-12-06 07:23:08 PM andrealonge That thought has crossed our minds... we end up putting like a gummy bear or something that is edible for that very reason
2018-12-06 07:23:33 PM andrealonge i like the food color idea too
2018-12-06 07:23:51 PM cantrellyard left the chat room
2018-12-06 07:24:04 PM kathyhughes That might work...
2018-12-06 07:24:11 PM cantrellyard enter the chat room
2018-12-06 07:24:15 PM kathyhughes coloring the batter is easy
2018-12-06 07:24:20 PM cantrellyard left the chat room
2018-12-06 07:24:30 PM cantrellyard enter the chat room
2018-12-06 07:24:35 PM cantrellyard left the chat room
2018-12-06 07:24:44 PM andrealonge true. We've made tie dye cakes before around Easter season
2018-12-06 07:24:44 PM cantrellyard enter the chat room
2018-12-06 07:24:44 PM cantrellyard left the chat room
2018-12-06 07:24:53 PM cantrellyard enter the chat room
2018-12-06 07:24:59 PM cantrellyard left the chat room
2018-12-06 07:25:10 PM cantrellyard enter the chat room
2018-12-06 07:25:23 PM kathyhughes We also would have a Mardi Gras parade and on Fat Tuesday we would have a Pancake Bar and staff would pay $5 for pancakes, sausage and all the fixings
2018-12-06 07:25:38 PM dianea1781 that sounds fun
2018-12-06 07:25:51 PM cantrellyard I like that Idea
2018-12-06 07:26:07 PM scoltey Yummy
2018-12-06 07:26:17 PM kathyhughes The staff enjoyed it
2018-12-06 07:26:26 PM kathyhughes and the residents could eat for free
2018-12-06 07:26:32 PM melodywhipple kathy did you ask the kitchen for ingrdients or buy them with your budget
2018-12-06 07:26:33 PM kathyhughes we had a ton of toppings
2018-12-06 07:26:38 PM andrealonge you reminded me of my favorite community event. Our campus has a maple sugaring operation and at the end of the season we have a huge breakfast for residents and staff that features our syrup
2018-12-06 07:26:46 PM cantrellyard i'm sure mine love to eat
2018-12-06 07:26:50 PM kathyhughes Dietary would make the batter
2018-12-06 07:27:18 PM kathyhughes we would cook the rest....lots of electric skillets
2018-12-06 07:27:25 PM cantrellyard dietary helps me a lot
2018-12-06 07:27:30 PM melodywhipple o good, we were told to watch our spending :(
2018-12-06 07:27:33 PM dianea1781 my kitchen charges me for anything i order for the residents i never understood that
2018-12-06 07:27:51 PM andrealonge we work well with our dining dept.
2018-12-06 07:27:52 PM cantrellyard We have done fried green tomatoes
2018-12-06 07:28:02 PM awalden I became good friends with our dietician and it saved me a LOT of money from our budget!
2018-12-06 07:28:10 PM kathyhughes I went through that and found it was cheaper to buy the supplies through Walmart
2018-12-06 07:28:45 PM dianea1781 i tried b uying supplies on my own but got in trouble saying its policy and cant have any outside foods brought in
2018-12-06 07:29:04 PM andrealonge we buy more than half of our food items each month out of house for that reason. We utilize the support of dining for large events and quick one offs
2018-12-06 07:29:19 PM scoltey I have a new FSD. I think she is overhwelmed and they do have staffing problem. Couple that with the building tightening what people can have within theor diets I'm somewhat discouraged from doing a lot of food things.
2018-12-06 07:29:51 PM scoltey feel bad saying no to people. No you can't have a donut or whatever.
2018-12-06 07:29:51 PM kathyhughes It was before all that...and I did check with the Health Dept and they said as long as I kept the receipt and it was from a store that they knew it was not a problem
2018-12-06 07:30:04 PM cantrellyard It is hard with differnt diets
2018-12-06 07:30:05 PM kathyhughes Sometimes we have to ask and ask the Health Dept
2018-12-06 07:31:00 PM awalden I struggled with the different diet issue too as I worked in a skilled nursing unit. It's so hard giving everyone cake and then 3 or 4 puddings to those on a puree diet!
2018-12-06 07:31:08 PM kathyhughes And there are different diets, but there are ways to adapt the food
2018-12-06 07:31:18 PM andrealonge We have family that want us to be responsile for sensoring what their loved one eats. We typically offer smaller portions with the option for more instead of telling people no
2018-12-06 07:31:25 PM kathyhughes we had a blender that we used a lot
2018-12-06 07:31:30 PM melodywhipple I am hoping if we have a food event, it will lessen the kitchen work for that day---hoping the Dietary mgr. will like that
2018-12-06 07:32:10 PM scoltey The consistency isn't as hard as diabetics. I think things may simmer down after some time. It's a bit topic right now with the doctors order vs resident rights.
2018-12-06 07:32:52 PM kathyhughes Also we have to remember that these folks are in a nursing home and would at least like a taste....and I would hate to be in a facility that would not let me cheat once in awhile
2018-12-06 07:32:59 PM cantrellyard I have a blender
2018-12-06 07:33:20 PM kathyhughes We had alert residents sign a waiver each time they wanted something that was not on their diet
2018-12-06 07:33:23 PM dianea1781 i give cake still to diabetics just a tiny slice so they still get a taste
2018-12-06 07:33:37 PM awalden That was one way the dietician helped me a lot. She would tell me specifically who could get away with little cheats here and there
2018-12-06 07:33:44 PM kathyhughes It is portion control
2018-12-06 07:34:04 PM andrealonge try donut holes steph instead of a whole donut. Add a side of fruit or something if you're worried about it feeling minimal
2018-12-06 07:34:25 PM scoltey Oh Kathy I get it! I have a family member there and it has been a struggle. Well she isn't technically family but I'm responsible for her. My feeling is she had a crappy life and I don't care to preserve her forever. I would rather she be happy and eat what she wants.
2018-12-06 07:34:47 PM cantrellyard the nurses help us they will check diabetics and tell us if they can have it
2018-12-06 07:34:48 PM melodywhipple we had a Dec bday breakfast today with waffles and strawberries-the residents chowed it down. I made sure to chop the berries and waffles into tiny pcs. a little bit of a cheat
2018-12-06 07:35:35 PM kathyhughes I believe that residents should be able to make their own choices...and that we spend too much time saying "NO" to people who are spending the rest of their life in a nursing home
2018-12-06 07:36:12 PM dianea1781 i agree its part of them having a quality of life
2018-12-06 07:36:26 PM andrealonge I feel so thankful that our facility is willing to look at changing old practices. We are now offering a cocktail hour twice a week where we serve alcoholic beverages and light refreshments (we do offer non-alcoholic options too). Residents really enjoy it.
2018-12-06 07:36:54 PM andrealonge I have a resident that drinks a bullseye at least 3 days a week right after breakfast :-)
2018-12-06 07:37:03 PM kathyhughes It is always a good idea to ask "Why" every now and then
2018-12-06 07:37:11 PM dianea1781 good for them
2018-12-06 07:37:31 PM scoltey I completely agree. I advocated for rights for 20plus years. I'm hoping this levels out soon. I should not feel bad for bringing my person broccoli cheddar soup. I have been discussing with the administrator about it. I want to solve it internally as I work there too
2018-12-06 07:37:37 PM awalden i had a resident who had an evening beer per her request in her care plan!
2018-12-06 07:37:53 PM cantrellyard left the chat room
2018-12-06 07:37:54 PM cantrellyard enter the chat room
2018-12-06 07:37:55 PM scoltey I plan to take her out sometime soon and let her eat whatever she wants lol
2018-12-06 07:38:21 PM kathyhughes Good idea!
2018-12-06 07:38:40 PM dianea1781 i take my residents out to eat once a month they love it
2018-12-06 07:38:53 PM andrealonge we allow our residents to bring their alcohol to the dining room. Some share with their tablemates too... it took a bit of "training" our staff to ensure alcohol orders were requested upon admission but we're finally there
2018-12-06 07:39:35 PM scoltey I do trips as the AD but this person is mine personally
2018-12-06 07:39:35 PM kathyhughes Thats even better!! I like that Andrea
2018-12-06 07:39:59 PM kathyhughes We also would do take out day and the residents could order a lunch out
2018-12-06 07:40:04 PM awalden That's fantastic. I did my college internship at an independent living facility that had a BYOB happy hour every friday. The AD would bring some wine and beer as well. It always turned into a great a party and the residents just loved it
2018-12-06 07:40:16 PM kathyhughes they would have to pay the cost, but we had a lot of residents who enjoyed it
2018-12-06 07:41:01 PM scoltey We have happy hour. It had dwindled in attendance though.
2018-12-06 07:41:12 PM andrealonge we have a great turn out. Residents don't feel institutionalized NOR do they feel belittled.
2018-12-06 07:41:28 PM dianea1781 i do whats called a wine and cheese every wednesday
2018-12-06 07:41:35 PM scoltey my contact is hurting. I'll be back in a sec
2018-12-06 07:41:53 PM kathyhughes We would make the snacks the in the morning for Happy Hour and then residents could share their recipes
2018-12-06 07:42:24 PM melodywhipple making snacks in the am is a good idea
2018-12-06 07:42:25 PM andrealonge that's how we do it Kathy. It's creates a better buy in for the residents when it comes time to show up in the afternoon
2018-12-06 07:42:50 PM scoltey back
2018-12-06 07:42:59 PM kathyhughes Right they enjoyed looking at the cook books and pick out the snack of the week
2018-12-06 07:43:18 PM kathyhughes we would post it so residents could see what we were having at Happy Hour
2018-12-06 07:43:29 PM cantrellyard We have let the residents help make snack the day before
2018-12-06 07:43:36 PM kathyhughes we used Table Tents on the dining room tables
2018-12-06 07:44:30 PM dianea1781 thats a cute idea
2018-12-06 07:44:31 PM melodywhipple did you do table tents that listed the whole week or by day
2018-12-06 07:44:35 PM awalden Table tents are useful for so many things!
2018-12-06 07:45:04 PM kathyhughes We did them for Happy Hour weekly and we also made some for Special Events
2018-12-06 07:45:17 PM cantrellyard We have done a build you plate activity You take magazines and the resident find pictures of food that they can put in a paper plate they like that
2018-12-06 07:45:25 PM melodywhipple that seems manageable for me
2018-12-06 07:46:02 PM scoltey I'm finding a lot of people aren't wanting the alcohol. I know it ebbs and flows
2018-12-06 07:46:05 PM andrealonge that would be a great idea for our tactile sessions (the plate idea)
2018-12-06 07:46:44 PM andrealonge can you still draw them in with music and food Stephanie? Or offer it at a different location or time?
2018-12-06 07:47:00 PM cantrellyard they pick meat vegetables and side and dessert
2018-12-06 07:47:47 PM andrealonge Our cocktail hour was fizzling out a few months back... we just changed locations and added to right after a large successful program and voila!
2018-12-06 07:48:30 PM dianea1781 i offer either gingerale or something bubbly if they dont want to drink alcohal
2018-12-06 07:48:37 PM cantrellyard We just made christmas trees with magazines and painted them green for our tables for our christmas party decoration
2018-12-06 07:48:39 PM scoltey I think the fact that I can only invite those with orders and it is downstairs where others can't see it if they shouldn't have it certainly detracts from it.
2018-12-06 07:48:44 PM scoltey They do come for snacks lol
2018-12-06 07:48:53 PM awalden That's a great idea to tack it on after something popular that they can just hang out and socialize at after
2018-12-06 07:49:36 PM andrealonge right. We don't have any formal structure to it... lots of small converstation
2018-12-06 07:50:03 PM cantrellyard we don't have happy hour
2018-12-06 07:50:12 PM kathyhughes Is there anything else for tonight???
2018-12-06 07:50:13 PM dianea1781 anything that deals with food they love lol
