2019-08-27 05:33:58 PM kathyhughes Hello Karen
2019-08-27 05:34:36 PM mmhines38 same this week is going great so far, we are having a mock survey getting ready for the real deal
2019-08-27 05:35:07 PM kathyhughes I am sure that the Mock survey will be harder than the regular one!
2019-08-27 05:35:19 PM mmhines38 lol thank goodness
2019-08-27 05:36:12 PM foxkaren hello everyone sorry late. I'm Karen from Florida. How are we all doing?
2019-08-27 05:36:43 PM mmhines38 always gets everyone so uptight
2019-08-27 05:36:45 PM kathyhughes That is how it went with me...they all had an "idea" of what was wrong with activities and I would ask them for the regulation (which 9 times out of ten did not exist!)
2019-08-27 05:36:53 PM kathyhughes Hello Karen
2019-08-27 05:36:57 PM mmhines38 oh wow
2019-08-27 05:37:35 PM kathyhughes Well no one really reads the regulations, they actually make things up...so I would always ask them
2019-08-27 05:38:37 PM foxkaren State is at our place. Need I say more
2019-08-27 05:38:51 PM kathyhughes Well I am sure that you will do well
2019-08-27 05:38:59 PM kathyhughes I enjoyed their visit....
2019-08-27 05:39:03 PM mmhines38 good to know , now I know what to ask them
2019-08-27 05:39:03 PM mmhines38 thank you
2019-08-27 05:39:09 PM kathyhughes It was always an adventire
2019-08-27 05:39:19 PM mmhines38 right thats my attitude just enjoy the ride
2019-08-27 05:40:00 PM kathyhughes There was always things that happened that was entertaining
2019-08-27 05:40:16 PM foxkaren My theroy on state is this. If you are doing your job it doesn't matter. And I do my job the same because I know I'm doing it right. Plus I love my residents and job so all is good
2019-08-27 05:40:44 PM kathyhughes I had a resident look directly at the DON who thought she should help with lunch...and the resident said "Who the Hell* are you and why are you here?"
2019-08-27 05:41:17 PM mmhines38 omg that is hilarious
2019-08-27 05:42:00 PM kathyhughes Another resident asked the surveyor if they could stay because they never get pitchers of water unless they were there!
2019-08-27 05:42:24 PM foxkaren Funny story. We have hymn sing every Tuesday morining with the preacher. Right after he closed and gave his pray...the fire alarm went off. Just found that kind of interestin. Because with that have to get all resident to room or out of main facility. Plus like I said State is there. Made for exciting morning
2019-08-27 05:42:59 PM mmhines38 true foxkaren
2019-08-27 05:43:08 PM kathyhughes Well good timing! I would bet that the staff actually helped get residents!

2019-08-27 05:47:30 PM shirleyk hi
2019-08-27 05:47:43 PM mindyyoung1978 Hi Kathy
2019-08-27 05:47:57 PM kathyhughes Hello
2019-08-27 05:48:23 PM kathyhughes So what types of questions do you have before the larger group shows up???
2019-08-27 05:48:55 PM foxkaren How to handle resident's family member being over bearing when she does volunteering as well? She thinks she can do anything cause her mother lives there. Went to staff incharge of volutnteering and was told fine line because of mother. I get that but does not help me. Espcially when other staff is coming to me. So help
2019-08-27 05:49:03 PM stephaniet enter the chat room
2019-08-27 05:50:13 PM stephaniet hello everyone
2019-08-27 05:50:16 PM kathyhughes Well if you have a job description for your volunteers you can refer to that...also you need to consel her about volunteering and ask her to tell you what she thinks the job is
2019-08-27 05:50:23 PM mmhines38 i like this question
2019-08-27 05:51:19 PM kathyhughes Also I am sure that she had an orientation to the facility and was given a list that she had to sign that says she read all of the "rules'
2019-08-27 05:51:40 PM mindyyoung1978 Ok so this one is kinda heavy should you every feel guilty for calling state?
2019-08-27 05:51:49 PM kathyhughes Even if they are relatives they are considered staff and need to have an orientation and an annual orientation
2019-08-27 05:52:04 PM badalyanlilit enter the chat room
2019-08-27 05:52:11 PM kathyhughes Nope I never did Mindy if I had reason to

2019-08-27 05:52:57 PM mindyyoung1978 I feel like I have a reason everyday.
2019-08-27 05:53:06 PM kathyhughes Hello Amber
2019-08-27 05:53:16 PM amberwilson hello, how are you?
2019-08-27 05:53:20 PM foxkaren She now thinks she should apply for the pt activities job. Which is fine but her and her mother fight like cats and dogs. Also mother should and would do better in memory. But daughter not ready to admit mother should go there. She is in Assisted now but has become an elopemlent risk but daughter doesn't see that. So when do you say enough is enough without hurting her feeling? Management is really no help.. Has become slot to fill and does not want to loose the money for the room.
2019-08-27 05:53:25 PM buddyrmorvent enter the chat room
2019-08-27 05:53:43 PM kathyhughes You have to know the regulations before you report them and I always would write the staff up before I went to the state
2019-08-27 05:54:47 PM lamearaj I have a question about written assignment #2 week 3. I noticed that in the deficiency report, RN's and other caregivers in the facilty were interviewed as well. In a real life situation, due to the fact that activities is what is being surveyed if the reason the resident is not attending social event or activities is due to something such as not being dressed, not getting out of bed, etc would the Activity director report this to the RN or become directly involved themselves and make sure the resident is prepared for participation and one on one room visits?
2019-08-27 05:54:50 PM kathyhughes Karen, she is volunteering without a job description or an orientation...so you can fire her
2019-08-27 05:54:52 PM badalyanlilit Hi everyone.
2019-08-27 05:55:50 PM mindyyoung1978 Wish I could write the staff up but the executive director and the DON will not address the issues.
2019-08-27 05:56:09 PM kathyhughes Lameara...you should have care planned for the resident to be up and ready for the activities of her choice. Once everyone signs off they are accepting what is written and it is a legal document
2019-08-27 05:56:09 PM buddyrmorvent Hello all!
2019-08-27 05:56:18 PM jcox I have the same problem in my area
2019-08-27 05:56:38 PM badalyanlilit left the chat room
2019-08-27 05:56:52 PM kathyhughes But you need to write them up...keep a copy and give it to the DON and ED....what they do with it is then their responsiblity
2019-08-27 05:57:16 PM kathyhughes You have the documentation and the dates, times and issues
2019-08-27 05:57:33 PM mindyyoung1978 yup.
2019-08-27 05:57:42 PM jcox I write it on the complaint forms
2019-08-27 05:58:13 PM kathyhughes You can but you have to keep a copy...and then you have access to the dates and times
2019-08-27 05:58:39 PM kathyhughes also if you report to the state...you will not be reported but I would look for another job
2019-08-27 05:59:06 PM foxkaren Question?? Can we do anything about nursing giving resident showers doing activitie? I realize they have job to do as well. But really I only would like to have them certain time certain days. so when resident wants to come activity for an hr of certain day nursing can't wait? Tring to reach my boss is impossible and they always stick up for nursing. How to handle that. And this one nurse can make my life ....if she wants.
2019-08-27 05:59:26 PM lamearaj Great question foxkaren
2019-08-27 05:59:30 PM mindyyoung1978 Thank you for the help I feel better
2019-08-27 06:00:02 PM jeaninem enter the chat room
2019-08-27 06:00:07 PM buddyrmorvent That is unfortunate foxkaren.
2019-08-27 06:00:29 PM shirleyk I have a similar problem with my therapy department, they take people out of activities and if the resident keeps participating tjey stand over them
2019-08-27 06:00:31 PM stephaniet we have this same kind of issue where i work
2019-08-27 06:00:47 PM buddyrmorvent Also a violation of the residents' rights.
2019-08-27 06:00:56 PM kathyhughes Again if you specifically state that Ms Brown would like to go to XYZ activity and she needs to be reminded by all staff to be ready for the activity that she enjoys. The nurse will sign off on that the Dr will sign off on that and they have to follow the care plan
2019-08-27 06:01:28 PM kathyhughes But if you are not specific and the resident "has" to have their bath at that time...I would show them the regulations
2019-08-27 06:01:45 PM foxkaren PT owns our place they think. Have been told by almost all Ed that PT trumps everything
2019-08-27 06:01:47 PM kathyhughes you have access through the course to the federal regulations...all of them
2019-08-27 06:02:09 PM jeaninem left the chat room
2019-08-27 06:02:24 PM kathyhughes Yes they do....PT brings in the money
2019-08-27 06:02:41 PM amberwilson do your residents have a shower schedule. when i worked in the nursing home they did. We didn't schedule showers during activity times.
2019-08-27 06:02:43 PM kathyhughes You should request a list of residents and the times that they need to be in PT
2019-08-27 06:02:49 PM foxkaren Would love to think the rules and regs work but not so

2019-08-27 06:03:08 PM amberreed enter the chat room
2019-08-27 06:03:09 PM kathyhughes they will also sign off on that care plan so they have to abide to what they signed off on
2019-08-27 06:03:10 PM jcox our therapy team is amazing they will wait until the activity is over befor taking the resident away.
2019-08-27 06:03:10 PM aclady Hi everyone

2019-08-27 06:03:59 PM shirleyk that is great jcox
2019-08-27 06:04:11 PM buddyrmorvent I never thought of the Care Plan as a leagal agreement before. That is useful as I try to reshape the AD position in my facility.

2019-08-27 06:04:43 PM kathyhughes It is a legal document
2019-08-27 06:04:43 PM stephaniet hello
2019-08-27 06:05:00 PM erittenhouse1683 Hello everyone
2019-08-27 06:05:14 PM kathyhughes And you have to discuss this with the team at the care plan meeting
2019-08-27 06:05:34 PM kathyhughes also if the resident is there they can state what activities they like to go to
2019-08-27 06:05:58 PM foxkaren So question Miss Kathy??? In assisted living if you have a Dr's order stating you can have a coctail before dinner is that true? If in your orders and written by Dr?
2019-08-27 06:06:19 PM mindyyoung1978 My PT and I talk we check in with each other. So we are not haveing the elder miss anything.
2019-08-27 06:06:26 PM mmhines38 how do we get the order
2019-08-27 06:06:33 PM best1 Having schedules in place is one of the best things for residents. Showers and PT and all. Makes things more organized
2019-08-27 06:06:41 PM kathyhughes Yes if the Dr orders it and it is in their service plan
2019-08-27 06:06:46 PM buddyrmorvent Yes I have always understood that, but it is also an agreement to do what is care planned. I guess I knew that also but the gravity of it just sunk in.
2019-08-27 06:06:51 PM kathyhughes ASk the Dr
2019-08-27 06:06:55 PM mmhines38 k
2019-08-27 06:07:17 PM erittenhouse1683 Our PT continues to just take our residents from the activities. In most cases they ask the resident, but they are still missing out.
2019-08-27 06:07:29 PM best1 Most times when we think a resident needs it we talk to the family and then talk to Dr about it and a order is put in place.
2019-08-27 06:07:45 PM kathyhughes The care plan or your service plan is the document that the survey team will look at to make sure that you are doing what the resident wants

2019-08-27 06:08:18 PM yvette1 good evening guys
2019-08-27 06:08:19 PM erittenhouse1683 We have a weekly happy hour.
2019-08-27 06:08:34 PM jcox I just had to ask the dr. and get the POA to sign off on it.
2019-08-27 06:08:35 PM mindyyoung1978 would the Dr. get mad if you assed for all the elders to have the order for alcohol.
2019-08-27 06:08:42 PM kathyhughes Welcome to the MEPAP1 chat
2019-08-27 06:09:09 PM buddyrmorvent Our weekly happy hour is one of our most successful activities.
2019-08-27 06:09:20 PM kathyhughes I doubt that the Dr would get "Mad" the Dr has to understand that they are in a nursing home and not at the corner bar....
2019-08-27 06:09:21 PM amberwilson we use to have a patient that would get a shot of whickey at night bedore bed, it was on his orders
2019-08-27 06:09:29 PM erittenhouse1683 Our Dr. automatically signs an order for each resident to participate in Happy Hour upon admission
2019-08-27 06:09:38 PM mindyyoung1978 I it is a big ask i know but I want all that want to come to be there.
2019-08-27 06:09:51 PM erittenhouse1683 Happy Hour used to be our most attended activity but has been loosing its popularity lately.
2019-08-27 06:09:53 PM kathyhughes Besides I always ask the Dr what would they do if they were spending the rest of their lives in a nursing
2019-08-27 06:09:55 PM lamearaj I have to admit... sounds like a pretty awesome activity
2019-08-27 06:09:55 PM kathyhughes home
2019-08-27 06:10:28 PM kathyhughes And it has to do with the Quality of Life and that is what you are in charge of

2019-08-27 06:10:42 PM stephaniet i have a question. i have never been in a management possition and i am an activities aide now and i always feel like my boss has all the answers but i feel like once i am a director i will get hung up on stuff and wont have anybody to ask what to do. did u ever feel like this and how do i stop that?
2019-08-27 06:11:02 PM amberwilson but ours is a different setting, so that would never happen

2019-08-27 06:11:20 PM foxkaren We have happy hour. Just this resident thinks should be everyday at 4 Have tried explaining to family member about sharing wine with other residents and not everyone has Dr orders. Family members answer well mom doesn't remember not to and use to do it at home. She even brings snacks with her happy hour. Daughter got very nasty with ED and me and threatened to take mom and dad our and find other living facility.

2019-08-27 06:15:11 PM merrellsherry we have a mock-tail cart that goes around and for residents who want alcohol they have a doctors order and their beverage is locked behind the nurse station and distributed by the nurse so consumption can be documentd
2019-08-27 06:15:13 PM stephaniet we gave non alcoholic beer before and had residents "really feeling it" its the idea sometimes that is enough

2019-08-27 06:17:47 PM kathyhughes But what would you do if the residents wanted a Happy Hour every afternoon???
2019-08-27 06:17:55 PM amberreed for those who have happy hour maybe you could change it up a little and have hors d'oeuvres every other week instead you can make a few different ones to try and sample
2019-08-27 06:18:10 PM stephaniet once a month we order pizza and have beer and pizza parties
2019-08-27 06:18:37 PM kathyhughes On Fridays we would cook the snacks for Happy Hour in the AM and then serve them
2019-08-27 06:18:55 PM mnissenbaum well, they know that I do happy hours every time music/entertainer comes to the facility.
2019-08-27 06:19:05 PM erittenhouse1683 Work on a way to make it happen. We have talked about moving our Happy Hour to right before supper, and possibly having it daily. Most of our residents get to the dining room too early.
2019-08-27 06:19:08 PM jcox I change my happy hour up each friday to keep it fresh
2019-08-27 06:19:12 PM aclady we would have to come to a half way point were it wouldn't everyday but more often something like once a week

2019-08-27 06:20:05 PM buddyrmorvent Happy Hour every day could morph into anything you want. Bring them in with the booze and keep them with engauging activities.
2019-08-27 06:20:13 PM yvette1 ask to see if can, then give the residents what they want

2019-08-27 06:20:33 PM yvette1 just do it...like nike
2019-08-27 06:20:41 PM foxkaren My question is? Daughter says mom is fine just short term memory loss. but if we can't remember serving drinks everyday when does it become more than short term? And threatens to move parents. One in in AL other in health center. so double rooms more money. c my problem with higher up? More money is all they see
2019-08-27 06:20:49 PM kathyhughes I was asked the question by a surveyor what would I do if residents wanted Bingo every day
