2014-08-19 05:38:29 PM kathyhughes You are welcome
2014-08-19 05:38:33 PM carola How should we handle it if we get no response from various organizations about challenges they face in activities? I've only gotten one reply after reaching out to multiple organizations.
2014-08-19 05:39:00 PM kathyhughes Is there a local association that you can go to?
2014-08-19 05:39:12 PM carola None that anyone knows of.
2014-08-19 05:39:16 PM kathyhughes Or you can ask your fellow students in the forum
2014-08-19 05:39:25 PM kathyhughes where are you from Carol?
2014-08-19 05:39:31 PM carola Nashville, TN
2014-08-19 05:40:05 PM kathyhughes I think that there is a local group there.....I would call around to see if someone knows about it
2014-08-19 05:40:36 PM valerieh Also we use a behavior form at my facility not incidental progress notes will that be ok to use for this weeks assignment
2014-08-19 05:40:46 PM kathyhughes yes that will be fine
2014-08-19 05:40:49 PM carola I'll try again, but my director, the facility director and none of those I have spoken with know of one.
2014-08-19 05:41:20 PM kathyhughes hmmmm....I think there is but would have to check with a friend of mine who lives there
2014-08-19 05:41:47 PM kathyhughes He was working in a nursing home as the Activity Director
2014-08-19 05:41:56 PM kathyhughes Now he works in the prison

2014-08-19 05:43:14 PM carola I'll try looking again. Could be it's out of this region, though. We spread out here and just say we're from Nashville even if we're just close!
2014-08-19 05:44:02 PM kathyhughes I just messaged him on Facebook
2014-08-19 05:44:04 PM carola I'm in west Nashville area

2014-08-19 05:45:57 PM kathyhughes So how are things going?
2014-08-19 05:46:18 PM valerieh Good
2014-08-19 05:46:36 PM carola My next question is how do you all get support when you talk about ideas or want to try something but only get mild interest or no opportunity to try an activity.
2014-08-19 05:46:48 PM kathyhughes ready for the fall?
2014-08-19 05:46:56 PM kathyhughes Good question Carol
2014-08-19 05:47:29 PM kathyhughes I would file them away until you can do them and think about how you can make it that persons ideas
2014-08-19 05:47:42 PM kathyhughes I kept a book of ideas
2014-08-19 05:47:59 PM carola I want to plan some things but my director keeps a full calendar. My opportunity in our memory unit is also limited.
2014-08-19 05:48:15 PM kathyhughes Well there is a way around that
2014-08-19 05:48:19 PM valerieh I am having a grandparents carnival, johnny appleseed party, and Ohio state kickoff party

2014-08-19 05:52:14 PM carola I would really love to focus on our memory unit. The residents love me, as do the nurses and family has said they like me back there but for some reason they won't truly allow it. Then the director is upset if activities aren't well done which they are when I'm there.
2014-08-19 05:52:19 PM kathyhughes What would you all do to celebrate Johnny Appleseed

2014-08-19 06:08:25 PM carola In October we'll have a bonfire (f irepits really) and make smores.
2014-08-19 06:08:32 PM carriesl the exciting but nervous part is it is in a therapy centerwe will see how that goes
2014-08-19 06:08:47 PM debbielee the weekend after labor day we have Miss Crustacean (local beauty pageant) and her court coming in to do a runway walk in the evening wear and a dance routine.
2014-08-19 06:08:49 PM carola firepits...(stupid computer...)

2014-08-19 06:09:25 PM kathyhughes well you can have hot dogs and all the fixings for the tailgate party
2014-08-19 06:09:49 PM tracyl I love the firepit idea, although we can't have an acutal fire. instead we make smores in the microwave the residents still love it
2014-08-19 06:09:51 PM carola The family members jumped in an had a whole assembly line going to make the s'mores.
2014-08-19 06:09:52 PM mariak enter the chat room

2014-08-19 06:10:01 PM kathyhughes Hello Maria
2014-08-19 06:10:06 PM 241130 The families can be the biggest support system!
2014-08-19 06:10:14 PM lisao bring in the bean bag toss game, and music and nerf footballs, and other assorted outdoor games and munchies - talk about what goes good with football, make banners for the team we want to win. lots of times have contests with the nerf footballs like who can hit a target and such
2014-08-19 06:10:30 PM mariak hi kathy and all... sorry for being late- just got off from work
2014-08-19 06:10:35 PM 241130 That sounds like fun! Great idea :)
2014-08-19 06:10:40 PM kathyhughes no problem
2014-08-19 06:10:44 PM carriesl lisao that is a really good idea
2014-08-19 06:10:50 PM debbielee we dont have that many residents interested in sports.
2014-08-19 06:11:02 PM shullseniorliving we are going to venture to football game
2014-08-19 06:11:02 PM lisao :)
2014-08-19 06:11:08 PM meganisabel oo pom poms sounds like fun! We do not have any of these cool events were I work, its the same activites over and over again
2014-08-19 06:11:20 PM kathyhughes You can also have a chili contest and invite the staff and families to bring in their best chili ....residents vote for the best
2014-08-19 06:11:29 PM 241130 I don't always think repetition is bad if the residents are happy.
2014-08-19 06:11:34 PM carriesl i have lots that are into sports woe can they yell
2014-08-19 06:11:35 PM tbender I love the tailgating parties. Most of our residents are not tied to highschool teams, but itmay be a good idea for Monday night foobll

2014-08-19 06:11:59 PM nijah enter the chat room
2014-08-19 06:12:09 PM 241130 Actually we had the residents judge the chili for us and a winner was chosen based on our housing set up
2014-08-19 06:12:13 PM lisao Meganisabel - do you ever talk to the powers that be about shaking things up a bit? What are their reactions?
2014-08-19 06:12:15 PM shullseniorliving we r going to do a float in the homecoming parade
2014-08-19 06:12:21 PM cstandl I'm glad to hear the chili cook offs go good - I was contemplating that one :)

2014-08-19 06:12:53 PM meganisabel My boss says its not in the "budget" :/
2014-08-19 06:12:54 PM loriw Hey there Kathy
2014-08-19 06:12:57 PM jean1 We don't have a facebook page but the social worker and I are going to start one. I think they are great for showcasing events, recruiting volunteers, etc.
2014-08-19 06:13:10 PM lisao did you ever make candy to hand out?
2014-08-19 06:13:13 PM shullseniorliving we dont. that i know of . will have to ask.
2014-08-19 06:13:14 PM carriesl Budget bahumbug
2014-08-19 06:13:17 PM kathyhughes A chili contest would be free!
2014-08-19 06:13:23 PM valerieh We have trick or treaters come thru
2014-08-19 06:13:30 PM 241130 Megan- You can do great programming with little to no expenses- your boss should know that. I'm sorry youre dealing with that.
2014-08-19 06:13:49 PM tracyl I love all of the ideas! I just started Mens club and I bet they would love to do a "tailgate party" and they would love chili, so far they have had finger foods like mozzarella sticks, chips and dip, although i'm having a hard time figuring out what to make for the residents with special diets like mech soft or puree
2014-08-19 06:13:51 PM carola Our family and friends who live far away...and close...love to see the pictures!
2014-08-19 06:14:01 PM debbielee we dont make candy we buy it and bag it. but you could bake cookies and bag them and hand out
2014-08-19 06:14:05 PM loriw We have a lot of home health agencys and churches that will donate stuff too.
2014-08-19 06:14:06 PM 241130 Our families love the fb page. We update them almost daily with photos of our programming so they can keep up with their loved ones while they are not there.
2014-08-19 06:14:08 PM shullseniorliving we do a halloween carnivel
2014-08-19 06:14:10 PM nijah We had a chilli cook off a while ago and we asked the vendor to bring the prizes and they were also the judges
2014-08-19 06:14:12 PM kathyhughes chili covers most diets
2014-08-19 06:14:25 PM meganisabel Are nursing home is attached to a hospital, they are very strict on the diets... thats why it would be hard for us to do anything like a chili cookoff or even a tailgaiting party... they are so picky about everything!
2014-08-19 06:14:31 PM loriw and it makes me happy....lol
2014-08-19 06:14:53 PM lisao Megan - sometimes it is better to just sort of plan something - then have all your ducks in a row - and then get permission -to put it on - if the powers that be don't have to do work it sometimes opens doors for thinking outside the box
2014-08-19 06:14:54 PM 241130 Ah, that makes sense.
2014-08-19 06:14:56 PM mariak thanks for the suggestions, tracyl... yes, diet restriction is one consideration i have to look into
2014-08-19 06:15:00 PM shullseniorliving we made a sugar free cobbler. they all loved it.
2014-08-19 06:15:02 PM carola I think a chili cookoff would be fun...may suggest it for the hoedown!

2014-08-19 06:15:16 PM tracyl i will talk to our nutritionist about it :)
2014-08-19 06:15:24 PM kathyhughes Hello Elicia
2014-08-19 06:15:44 PM lisao you can do the tailgate party without food - I know our nursing dept hates me cuz I make everyone fat lol
2014-08-19 06:15:46 PM loriw What is our discussion tonight??
2014-08-19 06:15:52 PM 241130 lol
2014-08-19 06:15:52 PM carriesl thats sad it is such a good way to get staff together do prizes
2014-08-19 06:15:54 PM lisao food lol
2014-08-19 06:15:59 PM tracyl someone was talking about a fall bazaar, since I am so new i don't think there is time to prep for it so we are going to host a spring bazaar
2014-08-19 06:15:59 PM carola We made sf banana pudding...no one complained!
2014-08-19 06:16:13 PM tracyl we usually do host a fall bazaar
2014-08-19 06:16:31 PM tracyl next week we are having a silent auction for the residents and staff
2014-08-19 06:16:32 PM debbielee I think gaining weight would be better than losing
2014-08-19 06:16:37 PM nacresia35 enter the chat room
2014-08-19 06:16:42 PM kathyhughes You can have a Valentines Day Bazaar
2014-08-19 06:16:47 PM 241130 Food is never a complaint for my community as long as we are within their personal dietary restrictions. Some residents even struggle with eating so whenever we can convince them- its a good thing!
2014-08-19 06:16:50 PM kathyhughes Hello Nacresia
2014-08-19 06:16:57 PM 241130 I agree Debbie- especially for seniors.
2014-08-19 06:17:04 PM sarahe Last week we had a local pottery maker come to our assisted living facility to teach our residents how to paint pottery. She will be returning next month to present another crafty activity and she asked me if I thought the residents would enjoy making items out of clay. She wasn't sure if the majority of residents would like the feel of the clay. What do you all think?
2014-08-19 06:17:07 PM tracyl thats a great idea! we could implement a lot of great stuff for it as well :)
2014-08-19 06:17:10 PM lisao well I work in the field of developmental disabilities so gaining weight.... not so much lol
