2013-04-18 06:09:03 PM agates Sensory tubs or bottles are great!
2013-04-18 06:09:20 PM christine41 what would you put in the bottles agates?
2013-04-18 06:09:22 PM kathyhughes And you can also make baskets of items familiar to the resident individually
2013-04-18 06:09:33 PM babieofseven We just took our residents to see 42 a must see for everyone the residents LOVED IT
2013-04-18 06:09:34 PM jadreani hand massage, music therapy,of coarse pet therapy,
2013-04-18 06:09:54 PM kathyhughes And familar music
2013-04-18 06:09:56 PM agates I think doing a memory board in their room is good too. Pictures of familiar things and people
2013-04-18 06:10:03 PM dh162986 good thing with sensory is puzzles and other things that are simple
2013-04-18 06:10:16 PM dwhite would sensory smells and teas work for your group? I have a number of employees from other countries and we put together a spice array for people to smell and then serve tea made from this group of spices--we have somali tea, ethiopian, etc
2013-04-18 06:10:38 PM agates I think that is a great idea dwhite!

2013-04-18 06:10:42 PM mtcourtney I made a texture board on my own with different material, I did the hand massage, music therapy, aromatherapy, soothing sound machines
2013-04-18 06:10:47 PM christine41 oh cool idea on the tea
2013-04-18 06:10:55 PM agates Really have them concentrate on the aromas before tasting them?? ..
2013-04-18 06:11:04 PM dh162986 texture boards are great
2013-04-18 06:11:05 PM dwhite What is on the texture board?
2013-04-18 06:11:25 PM anniei2552 left the chat room
2013-04-18 06:11:44 PM christine41 ok so heres the next question, would it be offensive to have them smell tea/food items when they are tube feed with a gtube
2013-04-18 06:11:48 PM jadreani we made wind chimes out of sparkling jewlery and hung them where the sun would shine on them
2013-04-18 06:11:48 PM kathyhughes Get a foam core display board and place all sorts of textures on it material
2013-04-18 06:12:03 PM jadreani bird feeders outside the windows
2013-04-18 06:12:06 PM mtcourtney I did some velvet , leather and then i did some not so abrasive sand paper, foam and sponge
2013-04-18 06:12:06 PM dwhite What did you make the tetur board from? I usually use swatches
2013-04-18 06:12:15 PM cathymayle left the chat room
2013-04-18 06:12:21 PM kathyhughes Thats a good question Christine
2013-04-18 06:12:29 PM dwhite What is the texture board made out of. I ue swatches but am interested
2013-04-18 06:12:33 PM kathyhughes there are two ways to think about that
2013-04-18 06:12:33 PM agates I would do the tea but no the food .. Just think, how would you like to smell cookies and not be able to eat them
2013-04-18 06:12:44 PM cathymayle enter the chat room
2013-04-18 06:13:05 PM mtcourtney I took some swatches given to me and put them on a piece of board i upholstered with the help of my mother in law :)
2013-04-18 06:13:05 PM kathyhughes One is that they need the stimulation
2013-04-18 06:13:09 PM cathymayle that's true
2013-04-18 06:13:15 PM mwilson im with agates on that i wouldent like it
2013-04-18 06:13:36 PM christine41 yea thats how i see it too, stimulation.
2013-04-18 06:13:36 PM kathyhughes the other would be that they are weaning off the tube and need their appetities stimulated
2013-04-18 06:13:40 PM kam enter the chat room
2013-04-18 06:13:47 PM kathyhughes Hello Kamala

2013-04-18 06:14:26 PM dwhite I do have people who are NPO and they just smell aromas.Fall smells-cinammon, nutmeg, etc are really popular. But so are summer fresh herbs such as basil, mint, tarragon
2013-04-18 06:14:27 PM mtcourtney i use essential oils on cotton sealed in baby food jars
2013-04-18 06:14:31 PM jadreani we used sand, and would put things in the sand for a client to just feel, and find things
2013-04-18 06:14:33 PM kam Took the final today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2013-04-18 06:18:18 PM dh162986 haha
2013-04-18 06:18:26 PM kam Bummer on the slime :(
2013-04-18 06:18:33 PM christine41 I have another question. One of my patients mom has brought in very age inappropriate items, such as dragon stuffed animal and mythical creature stuffed animals as well as many other weird items that are not age appropriate. Every day she brings more and more items and has said that her son needs to be doing something all the time, constantly. The nursing staff and myself don't think that. He is a TBI and needs rest too. Has anyone dealt with anything similar? If so what did you do or what was done?
2013-04-18 06:18:38 PM mtcourtney I know right I love it hahaha
2013-04-18 06:18:43 PM babieofseven Mine like the ocean and waterfalls

2013-04-18 06:19:52 PM jadreani i found liqiud oil lamp where it can show up on the ceiling as it the wheel turns, all different colors intwine with each other, again excuse my spelling
2013-04-18 06:19:53 PM kathyhughes Remember that all things are "person-appropriate" so that the animals might be okay
2013-04-18 06:20:00 PM kmcooley We have rhythm band instruments that we use on exercise days
2013-04-18 06:20:12 PM dh162986 what is his reaction to all the stuffed animals
2013-04-18 06:20:41 PM kathyhughes as far as rest....I would make a schedule for her...you know guilt is hard to tackle in family members

2013-04-18 06:24:29 PM christine41 family is so so so rediculously difficult. For me family is probably the hardest part because they can either be supportive or just drive you nuts

2013-04-18 06:24:39 PM jblackmon yes and I can understand that
2013-04-18 06:24:48 PM mtcourtney I love when they attend CP meetings though because it helps them understand the care provided and at times they become part of the team
2013-04-18 06:24:51 PM dh162986 ive found out family is the hardest to deal with
2013-04-18 06:25:00 PM nalvarez true
2013-04-18 06:25:17 PM mwilson care plans help but so does starting a family council
2013-04-18 06:25:20 PM kathyhughes I always thought that we should assess the family first befiore we accepted the resident

2013-04-18 06:25:43 PM agates your right about CP mtcourtney! It really opens their eyes and allows them to feel like they are involved in their care and that we as an interdisciplinary team are doing the best we can for them

2013-04-18 06:26:06 PM dh162986 support groups are awesome
2013-04-18 06:26:10 PM kathyhughes Or have her start one....and host it at your facility
2013-04-18 06:26:19 PM jadreani I cant imagine what i would feel if someone else was trying to help me by teaching me new things about my love one? it has to be ?
2013-04-18 06:26:24 PM kam Sometimes the family member enables so much that it hurts them!
2013-04-18 06:26:36 PM mwilson that would give her a place to put all her greef and anger about the situation
2013-04-18 06:26:46 PM kmcooley I mean talk as in a monolog just to perhaps jog his mind
2013-04-18 06:26:46 PM agates I have mixed feelings about supposrt groups .. atleast the ones I have hosted at my facility!

2013-04-18 06:26:58 PM christine41 um thats a good idea, support groups at my facility in addition to family council and care plan meeting
2013-04-18 06:27:12 PM kathyhughes We had an MS support group at our facility and it really helped the residents and their families
2013-04-18 06:27:19 PM kam I agree mtcourtney
2013-04-18 06:27:38 PM dwhite We have trouble getting families to attend support groups? What has worked for you all?

2013-04-18 06:28:05 PM mtcourtney because my facility is mostly behavioral... the support groups help tremendously

2013-04-18 06:28:13 PM kathyhughes The residents started it and we would send reminders to the families
