2016-06-16 06:07:04 PM naomid I'm always saying thank you, /i appriciate you.
2016-06-16 06:07:09 PM monigreen we had a staff member that was really lazy and she finally left on her own because she didn't like the work. People thing activities is easy until they do it and then they are surprised at the hard work involved. I think that is why she transferred into our department in the first place. She thought that it was going to be easy.
2016-06-16 06:07:16 PM jennyw One of the most important lessons I learned so far with staff is motivating them that instead of "having to" do something, looking at it as "getting to." And what can they learn or gain from it?
2016-06-16 06:07:16 PM kathyhughes But do they know that they can progress to eventually become an activity director?
2016-06-16 06:07:19 PM jackie26 they are lazy
2016-06-16 06:07:38 PM amber88 no i dont think so because i didnt when I was an aide
2016-06-16 06:07:39 PM jackie26 and i have cna to help
2016-06-16 06:07:44 PM susieq4220 enter the chat room
2016-06-16 06:07:47 PM awatts in this profession you really have to have the right attitude
2016-06-16 06:07:48 PM kmdemers i had to give my staff their evaluations last week one was not so good her lack of ambition was not there i tried explaing to her why and what she needed to work on and also the possitive things she has doneand she still thinks its ok to do whatever she wants its very frustrating i have spoken with the administrator about it
2016-06-16 06:07:55 PM kathyhughes Everyone thinks the job is easy
2016-06-16 06:08:09 PM awatts not so much!
2016-06-16 06:08:11 PM carlosm2015 I went to the a Toastmaster meeting on Tuesday, It really was great, It is a program that can help you develop leadership skills and communication. I learned a lot in 3 hours.
2016-06-16 06:08:24 PM amber88 3 hours?? wow
2016-06-16 06:08:27 PM belindaf that s a long meeting
2016-06-16 06:08:27 PM susieq4220 Hi Kathy and friends, sorry to be late but I had trouble logging in. Can I stay?
2016-06-16 06:08:40 PM kathyhughes It is hard to get staff to see that they are making a difference in people's lives
2016-06-16 06:08:49 PM belindaf mine was only 50 minutes, I went at a lunch time one
2016-06-16 06:08:50 PM kathyhughes yes you can stay
2016-06-16 06:08:52 PM naomid we get paid to play...how do you have a hard day??
2016-06-16 06:08:54 PM jud4me I finally got my Assistant and she is doing well. YEAHHHHH
2016-06-16 06:08:57 PM jackie26 i think that they are adult i do not have to tell them what to do
2016-06-16 06:08:57 PM kathyhughes Great Carlos
2016-06-16 06:09:09 PM belindaf But most need direction
2016-06-16 06:09:16 PM awatts correct
2016-06-16 06:09:25 PM kathyhughes Oh but you have to educate them daily on why they are doing what they are doing
2016-06-16 06:09:41 PM amber88 yes and you really have to have the care in your heart to work in the health field..if you dont you are not going to succeed
2016-06-16 06:09:41 PM kathyhughes And the first step is to have them see the regulations
2016-06-16 06:09:42 PM awatts that is what im having to do
2016-06-16 06:09:44 PM kmdemers true
2016-06-16 06:09:44 PM susieq4220 I think we need an injection of enthusiasm. My unit has been under gastro for a week and it gets stressful.
2016-06-16 06:09:46 PM belindaf I A smile goes a long way, as does a hug for a residnet
2016-06-16 06:09:48 PM jennyw One of the most important lessons I learned so far with staff is motivating them that instead of "having to" do something, looking at it as "getting to." And what can they learn or gain from it?
2016-06-16 06:09:54 PM jackie26 i tell the aid that shehas 15minutes brake and she took 1/2hour
2016-06-16 06:10:02 PM akline sometimes the attitudes of the nurses, cna's and other staff have an effect on our department and how motivated we are to try new things. if we feel as though they aren't motivated and not supporting us if affects us. I know it shouldn't but sometimes it just does.
2016-06-16 06:10:07 PM kathyhughes and then teach them that if it weren't for the regulations we would not have a job
2016-06-16 06:10:19 PM susieq4220 I like to come to work with something positive.
2016-06-16 06:10:20 PM belindaf I like that one Kathy
2016-06-16 06:10:28 PM monigreen That's a great point, Kathy!
2016-06-16 06:10:28 PM susieq4220 We make a difference every day.
2016-06-16 06:10:34 PM jackie26 i am always positive
2016-06-16 06:10:38 PM awatts oh my gosh Kathy, I had to fire a gal who violated HIPPA regulations for talking to another member about another member
2016-06-16 06:10:43 PM belindaf Its the little things that people notice
2016-06-16 06:10:46 PM amber88 regulations are interesting..i didnt know anything about it until this class
2016-06-16 06:10:51 PM kathyhughes And that they are very important it the scheme of things
2016-06-16 06:10:57 PM amber88 well part 1 anyway
2016-06-16 06:11:06 PM kathyhughes That happens....
2016-06-16 06:11:10 PM carlosm2015 It did go quick and they bring you in inmediatly to participate and give opinions right in front of everyone it was exciting, scary and rewarding :-)
2016-06-16 06:11:43 PM kathyhughes We need to make sure that our staff knows that they can be an activity director and that they need the skills to be one that reflects us
2016-06-16 06:12:02 PM awatts agreed
2016-06-16 06:12:03 PM susieq4220 I just finished the section on learning styles and find tht very enlightening for me, for staff, and for residents.
2016-06-16 06:12:03 PM kathyhughes I loved Toastmasters
2016-06-16 06:12:12 PM jackie26 yep
2016-06-16 06:12:15 PM belindaf This course has made me do things I would never had tried on my own and I like that
2016-06-16 06:12:24 PM susieq4220 Agreed
2016-06-16 06:12:27 PM kathyhughes Right Sue....looking at their learning styles help
2016-06-16 06:12:27 PM amber88 very true
2016-06-16 06:12:28 PM awatts good for you belinda
2016-06-16 06:12:37 PM mariahmatthews enter the chat room
2016-06-16 06:12:38 PM jackie26 it is
2016-06-16 06:12:39 PM jennyw what is toastmasters?
2016-06-16 06:12:48 PM belindaf I would like to go back, its a very positve experience
2016-06-16 06:12:48 PM kathyhughes and letting them have control about how to do the activities is also a good step
2016-06-16 06:12:57 PM susieq4220 Toastmasters was a cool experience.
2016-06-16 06:13:12 PM amber88 I still have to go to a meeting
2016-06-16 06:13:17 PM jud4me My new assist got excited that when she was playing a game with theem today they were all laughing joking and enjoying themselves and it touched her heart to see that I LOVE IT!!!
2016-06-16 06:13:20 PM kathyhughes Toastmasters is a Practicum Requirement for MEPAP2 and it is a communication organization
2016-06-16 06:13:28 PM awatts working together as a team and making sure they are all on the same page is always nice
2016-06-16 06:13:42 PM naomid yes it is
2016-06-16 06:13:43 PM kmdemers any ideas for an activity for a 34 year old man he is young but cannot use his hands
2016-06-16 06:13:45 PM susieq4220 With dementia, I have to be more mindful to have an example, outline the steps, and to be hands on learning.
2016-06-16 06:13:46 PM mariahmatthews I really enjoyed my toastmasters experience
2016-06-16 06:13:52 PM belindaf It melts your heart when that happens
2016-06-16 06:13:53 PM kathyhughes Yes Judy having some time to try new things together helps motivate staff
2016-06-16 06:13:55 PM jackie26 in my facility is hard to work as a team
2016-06-16 06:14:05 PM awatts gathering ideas from eachother to make programs even better is awesome
2016-06-16 06:14:06 PM monigreen Yes, that works for us. When the staff get to help in the planning and activities they really feel a part of everything. It gives them a sense of satisfaction. Especially when you congradulate them on a successful program.
2016-06-16 06:14:10 PM jennyw oh thats why it sounded familiar :) Thanks Kathy
2016-06-16 06:14:15 PM kathyhughes and sometimes we have to ignore the "opinions" of the other departments
2016-06-16 06:14:17 PM akline morale has gotten low in my facilty
2016-06-16 06:14:29 PM jackie26 yes kathy that too
2016-06-16 06:14:30 PM akline i agree....but sometimes its hard
2016-06-16 06:14:35 PM awatts thank goodness i dont ave to deal with that kathy
2016-06-16 06:14:48 PM monigreen YESSSS....Those opinions can really kill your moral
2016-06-16 06:14:54 PM naomid does he use his feet or mouth ?
2016-06-16 06:14:55 PM jackie26 too many criticism
2016-06-16 06:14:57 PM kathyhughes And having them help with some of the MEPAP2 assignments as collaboartors also helps
2016-06-16 06:14:57 PM jud4me Im on a high today, I am home early
2016-06-16 06:15:14 PM kmdemers his mouth
2016-06-16 06:15:21 PM susieq4220 I've been out sick for two days and can't wait to see the welcome I get tomorrow. Sometimes when we are NOT there staff see the difference.
2016-06-16 06:15:26 PM monigreen i'm still at work
2016-06-16 06:15:29 PM akline me too! i usually work till 7:30 tonight but was able to leave at 7:)
2016-06-16 06:15:39 PM amber88 what do you mean as collaboartors
2016-06-16 06:15:55 PM belindaf when dept work together for a common goal
2016-06-16 06:15:55 PM monigreen It can be a real eye opener when the activities staff is gone
2016-06-16 06:16:04 PM kathyhughes they should collaborate on the vision of the dpeatrment
2016-06-16 06:16:11 PM susieq4220 Show the 34-year old some videos of painting with mouth. u-tube has great inspirations.
2016-06-16 06:16:13 PM amber88 oh i see
2016-06-16 06:16:14 PM awatts monigreen i hear you there
2016-06-16 06:16:16 PM jackie26 what activities can i do for residents that has a laptop and prefers to stay in his room but the DON want me to find something for him to do
2016-06-16 06:16:21 PM jud4me I am having to understand how she learns right which helps withe assignments we have
2016-06-16 06:16:36 PM mariahmatthews Have that resident teach other residents how to use the computer
2016-06-16 06:16:40 PM kathyhughes they should also collaborate on evaluating the activities, this gives them an opportunity to "buy into" the evaluations
2016-06-16 06:16:45 PM awatts activities department is such an important part
2016-06-16 06:16:54 PM kathyhughes They then take ownership
2016-06-16 06:17:01 PM jackie26 but he does not want to go out of his room
2016-06-16 06:17:03 PM awatts what would they do with out us
2016-06-16 06:17:08 PM amber88 i like that and never thought of doing that before
2016-06-16 06:17:12 PM susieq4220 That's a good idea, Kathy. I can ask CNAs what they like to see done more effectively.
2016-06-16 06:17:15 PM kathyhughes they should also have a say in the procedures of the activities
2016-06-16 06:17:16 PM mariahmatthews does he accept guests in his room?
2016-06-16 06:17:20 PM belindaf maybe one or two can come to his room
2016-06-16 06:17:22 PM naomid ask him/her if they wouldnt mind showing some people to play games on there
2016-06-16 06:17:24 PM jennyw jackie - does he want to do anything else? is he bored? why does the DON want him more involved?
2016-06-16 06:17:25 PM kmdemers thanks its hard trying to find him things to do and to get out of his room
2016-06-16 06:17:36 PM jackie26 i have to ask maria
2016-06-16 06:17:44 PM belindaf find a pen pal on line
2016-06-16 06:17:48 PM jackie26 will see belinda
2016-06-16 06:18:01 PM susieq4220 Pen pal would be a great idea.
2016-06-16 06:18:02 PM jackie26 he said he is bored yes
2016-06-16 06:18:04 PM awatts at my facility, i let my staff play around with the programs to see what different reactions they get
2016-06-16 06:18:10 PM akline could he write things up for various staff? maybe type up the menus for each day?
2016-06-16 06:18:21 PM belindaf cool idea get him a job
2016-06-16 06:18:21 PM kmdemers yes he said he was bored
2016-06-16 06:18:34 PM kathyhughes And I learned early on NEVER to say....that won't work
2016-06-16 06:18:35 PM jackie26 yes good idea i will do that thanks
2016-06-16 06:18:40 PM amber88 that always gets me..residents say they are bored but they dont want to come out of their rooms or help in anyway
2016-06-16 06:18:44 PM kathyhughes You never know until you try
2016-06-16 06:18:46 PM akline something tht makes him feel purposeful
2016-06-16 06:18:47 PM monigreen Have him make a few flyers for some of your events and give him all the credit. He will love it
2016-06-16 06:18:48 PM awatts true
2016-06-16 06:18:52 PM mariahmatthews That is a cool idea, we have a resident that sends out words of wisdom every morning to staff members
2016-06-16 06:19:04 PM akline nice
2016-06-16 06:19:07 PM carlosm2015 That was one of the firts things I noticed on the Toastmaster they collaborate not just to let you know how great you do, but also they let you know where you can improve.
2016-06-16 06:19:13 PM vickeybates Residents have the right to choose their own activities
2016-06-16 06:19:14 PM jackie26 yes
2016-06-16 06:19:16 PM susieq4220 Online learning or online video trips. Smithsonian has a great selection
2016-06-16 06:19:19 PM belindaf I like the words of wisdom, has he ever read Winston Churchill
2016-06-16 06:19:21 PM jennyw could he use his laptop to help discover new activities for your calendar? some that might interest him and others? collaborate with him?
2016-06-16 06:19:30 PM susieq4220 Carlos dis you talk at the Toastmasters?
2016-06-16 06:19:40 PM susieq4220 did you
2016-06-16 06:19:47 PM kathyhughes I had a resident who would make up trivia questions for us from the computer
2016-06-16 06:19:56 PM awatts too cool
2016-06-16 06:20:03 PM kathyhughes He loved it
2016-06-16 06:20:13 PM kathyhughes and I had trivia questions forever!
2016-06-16 06:20:15 PM amber88 thats a neat idea
2016-06-16 06:20:16 PM jackie26 trivia sounds good
2016-06-16 06:20:17 PM monigreen everyone loves trivia
2016-06-16 06:20:22 PM susieq4220 Great idea...
2016-06-16 06:20:25 PM kmdemers true
2016-06-16 06:20:25 PM awatts i really like to involve my members as much as possible
2016-06-16 06:20:36 PM mariahmatthews Something purposeful like that will maybe open him up to more activities
2016-06-16 06:20:38 PM susieq4220 Sometimes we just have to think outside the box.
2016-06-16 06:20:43 PM jackie26 and i have another who are always wondering
2016-06-16 06:20:49 PM belindaf i like the way you say members insstead of residnets
2016-06-16 06:20:55 PM awatts i have a lady who likes to bring in poetry and she will read it to us
2016-06-16 06:21:17 PM amber88 my old facility called residents members and residents hated it
2016-06-16 06:21:20 PM belindaf its like they are in a country club
2016-06-16 06:21:23 PM carlosm2015 That can be applied at work with the staff instead of telling a staff member how bad you are doing at something, maybe just be supportive and offer tehm help if they are having a problem in any area of their job , provide tehm with guidance.
2016-06-16 06:21:26 PM jackie26 it is hard to please everyone
2016-06-16 06:21:38 PM kathyhughes I had some homeschoolers who made triva questions for us for each day of the Olympics
2016-06-16 06:21:58 PM awatts the only reason why mine are called members is because they are at an adult day care and go home
2016-06-16 06:22:03 PM kathyhughes they made table tents with the question and we put them on all the diningroom tables each day
2016-06-16 06:22:06 PM naomid I might steal that one Kathy
2016-06-16 06:22:07 PM mariahmatthews we are getting very excited to do the Olympics at our facility in August!
2016-06-16 06:22:15 PM belindaf me too!
2016-06-16 06:22:24 PM akline we have a resident, who wants to feel as though shes helping so she typically takes this one resident whos in a wheelchair, and tries to take her back to her room or wherever the other resident wants to go. Problem is they both have some dementia and forget where they are to go. We've told this resident to not take her anymore but she still does when we leave the room to take another resident back, who's a fall risk. We dont know how to stop her
2016-06-16 06:22:24 PM susieq4220 I enjoy working in the dementia unit, but I miss these self-directed ideas involving residents. I get tired being the only one to bring the ideas and fun.
2016-06-16 06:22:26 PM kathyhughes you are welcome to
2016-06-16 06:22:31 PM jud4me What are yall doing for Fathers day
2016-06-16 06:22:43 PM belindaf thanks
2016-06-16 06:22:52 PM awatts fathers day we are having a car show
2016-06-16 06:22:55 PM jackie26 live music
2016-06-16 06:23:00 PM amber88 oh that makes sense awatts..residents were upset because they said they live there and should be called residents
2016-06-16 06:23:02 PM mariahmatthews We actually started celebrating Father's Day today with a Sports n' Suds event
2016-06-16 06:23:05 PM susieq4220 we're having a barbeque.
2016-06-16 06:23:06 PM jackie26 and gift for them
2016-06-16 06:23:09 PM awatts actually its going to be tomorrow
2016-06-16 06:23:10 PM jud4me cool car show
2016-06-16 06:23:15 PM kathyhughes Well Ashley who is the fall risk?
2016-06-16 06:23:29 PM mariahmatthews The men got beer or soda and we played pool, poker, uno, cranked up the music and turned our wellness center into a "bar"
2016-06-16 06:23:31 PM jud4me left the chat room
2016-06-16 06:23:36 PM jennyw sports and suds?
2016-06-16 06:23:41 PM jud4me enter the chat room

2016-06-16 06:24:01 PM awatts i was able to get a classic car club donate there time and have luch with the members BBQ
2016-06-16 06:24:02 PM jud4me we are having a cherry pie fest
2016-06-16 06:24:07 PM awatts lunch
2016-06-16 06:24:07 PM naomid my men would love that
2016-06-16 06:24:17 PM jennyw haha awesome!
2016-06-16 06:24:18 PM jackie26 cherry pie yummiii
2016-06-16 06:24:26 PM jud4me that is so awesome
2016-06-16 06:24:29 PM akline well we have another resident, neither of the two i mentioned, who needs to go back first. So we take her back first, we come back into the room and the one resident has taken the other, they never get too far. But we dont want to hurt this lady's feelings but need her to stop taking the other resident.
2016-06-16 06:24:31 PM amber88 how are you doing the car show?
2016-06-16 06:24:48 PM kathyhughes Why?
2016-06-16 06:24:59 PM kathyhughes They are on their own adventure
2016-06-16 06:25:04 PM akline hahaha
2016-06-16 06:25:10 PM susieq4220 (H)
2016-06-16 06:25:11 PM jackie26 hi amber, where are you know. did you find a new job?
2016-06-16 06:25:11 PM akline the nurses get angry
2016-06-16 06:25:18 PM kathyhughes and is there something that she can do at the end of the activity?
2016-06-16 06:25:31 PM kathyhughes And nurses then can come at the end of the activity
2016-06-16 06:25:46 PM akline hmmm like clean up the napkins and cups?
