2013-05-28 06:19:07 PM 29645 YEA IF YOU SERVE FOOD THE AID ARE THE FIRST IN THE DOOR JUST TELL THEM TO BRING A RESIDENT
2013-05-28 06:19:09 PM slf0038 I dont think they realize how hard we work!
2013-05-28 06:19:09 PM cmzeitler I do bingo on Thursday evenings 17-20 Residents attend. some NA's think its more work for them- I remind them that I bring all of them in and take them back to their rooms. Im spending 1.5 hours with them which should be giving them an easier time...
2013-05-28 06:19:12 PM kathyhughes Have a Pizza Inservice
2013-05-28 06:19:21 PM chustead I try to include the aides in parties and social events it's important to the residents to have them there and the nursing staff always loves a treat.
2013-05-28 06:19:24 PM catejuvenal Kathy, that is a great idea...food always brings people in
2013-05-28 06:19:26 PM dleonard Food is key!
2013-05-28 06:19:32 PM brenda1945 How about the employee of the month gets to plan and assist with an activity, maybe they will start to realize just how important activities are.
2013-05-28 06:19:48 PM carlota36 17 to 20 wow. my hats off to you i get 7
2013-05-28 06:19:50 PM krkurth brenda i like that idea!
2013-05-28 06:19:51 PM deedabbler That is a great idea Brenda
2013-05-28 06:19:52 PM kathyhughes I think thats a good idea
2013-05-28 06:19:56 PM cmzeitler Oh Brenda 1945 thats an interesting idea!!!
2013-05-28 06:19:56 PM brenda1945 oh yes and food always
2013-05-28 06:19:56 PM sharonbeseda Hum, where are the diseases to choose for our assignments, not sure what area i
2013-05-28 06:19:59 PM carlota36 for bingo only 7.
2013-05-28 06:20:08 PM chustead And they do work very hard and are always hungry. For nursing home week we had a special snack for the staff daily.
2013-05-28 06:20:15 PM kathyhughes Under Written ASsignment #1 Sharon
2013-05-28 06:20:19 PM sharonbeseda I Saw
2013-05-28 06:20:22 PM slf0038 I also have trouble with the nurses getting them up on time to get to the morning activity
2013-05-28 06:20:23 PM sharonbeseda Thank you
2013-05-28 06:20:24 PM bernlewis 1945 would dthe employee o fthe month think it was punishment?:)
2013-05-28 06:20:31 PM kathyhughes so you pick one and post it
2013-05-28 06:20:37 PM sharonbeseda OK
2013-05-28 06:20:51 PM kathyhughes LOL Bernadette
2013-05-28 06:21:16 PM jamieblue My facility is going to use activities to prevent falls in the evenings. Does anyone have any ideas I could use? The DON gave me the idea of filling buckets with water and letting them splash their hands in it?
2013-05-28 06:21:22 PM deedabbler They might but I bet after they tried it they would be begging to do it again.
2013-05-28 06:21:44 PM slf0038 Whats with the buckets?
2013-05-28 06:21:48 PM kathyhughes I have an inservice that I have done with staff that lets them plan their own calendar of events and what they would like to do and then we relate that to the calendar for the residents
2013-05-28 06:21:53 PM carlota36 yeah?????
2013-05-28 06:21:56 PM sharonbeseda That may lead to a fall risk
2013-05-28 06:22:06 PM brenda1945 Oh no, I think they would enjoy the opportunity because they would have that time 2-4 hours to interact with the residents. They are always the ones that are good to the residents.
2013-05-28 06:22:08 PM kathyhughes I agree
2013-05-28 06:22:18 PM deedabbler oh slip and fall.
2013-05-28 06:22:21 PM chustead Yeah all the water would splash on the floor.
2013-05-28 06:22:27 PM kathyhughes in the water on the floor
2013-05-28 06:22:45 PM sharonbeseda not a good idea
2013-05-28 06:22:47 PM cmzeitler We have Thursday pm and Saturday afternoon bingo. Their request. Saturdays 22-26 come, Thursday 15 to 20. We give small candy bars for winnings and the final game is Full Card Cover All where they get a dollar. for the evening idea we do a quiet sensory hour with relaxing instrumental music, a lavendar plug in air freshener and turn the lights down in the "living room" It really does calm down our fall risks
2013-05-28 06:22:49 PM bernlewis Maybe u could have pictures of potential dangerous things like an untied shoe or a cord over the walkway with a person using a walker and discuss it then make it into a poem.
2013-05-28 06:22:51 PM carlota36 sometimes you can win for loosing
2013-05-28 06:22:57 PM kathyhughes I would first check the lighting...sometimes 2nd shift likes to turn off lights
2013-05-28 06:23:09 PM letroces4 i have one resident who always shouts and has a very short attention span, she is vietnamese and i tried bringing her in to our low functioning activities but after 5 minutes she would be shouting. Im trying to think of activities for her. today i had her husband come in and do activities with us, but even with him, she was shouting...
2013-05-28 06:23:10 PM bernlewis maybe tht would become twisted humor :)
2013-05-28 06:23:36 PM ss1325 activities at night to prevent falling?.... pass our magazines?
2013-05-28 06:23:42 PM carlota36 try vietnamesse index cards for communication
2013-05-28 06:23:44 PM chustead We have a wonderful young lady that comes in and play the harp for the residents in the evenings three times a week.
2013-05-28 06:23:52 PM bernlewis If my husband did activities with my group i would shout at him !!
2013-05-28 06:23:59 PM krkurth i love that harp idea, sounds so calming
2013-05-28 06:24:01 PM ss1325 i think nursing needs to be making sure they have everything they need before they lay down
2013-05-28 06:24:02 PM kathyhughes Where do they fall the most?
2013-05-28 06:24:09 PM deedabbler Do you have any music she might like in her own language
2013-05-28 06:24:16 PM nvite664 in their room's
2013-05-28 06:24:22 PM slf0038 This may sound childish, but I had a resident that yelled and I gave her a lollipop or popcycle. That helped. Honestly! lol!
2013-05-28 06:24:24 PM letroces4 i provided communication board for her too and she would not look at it and just shout... i took her in today for some meditation maybe to calm her down...
2013-05-28 06:24:32 PM jamieblue Most fall in their rooms.
2013-05-28 06:24:34 PM letroces4 hey maybe you can use meditation for fall prevention at night
2013-05-28 06:24:45 PM chustead left the chat room
2013-05-28 06:24:51 PM kate9 When all else fails, I find that my female residents almost always love to have scented lotion massaged onto their hands.
2013-05-28 06:24:57 PM bernlewis Hey the way to the resident's heart must have been her stomach :) 38
2013-05-28 06:24:58 PM letroces4 i put out those battery candles, put on some soothing music and spray lavender in the room then do some massages
2013-05-28 06:25:06 PM jamieblue I like the meditation idea.
2013-05-28 06:25:16 PM kathyhughes You should make sure there is nothing physical happening like a UTI
2013-05-28 06:25:21 PM ss1325 yea meditation relaxed breathing massages!
2013-05-28 06:25:37 PM sharonbeseda Here's one, small box of favorite instant pudding, follow directions, 2 sturdy zip lock bags, fill the inner bag with mix and the milk. Close tight. Place the filled ziplock inside the empty zip lock. Start tossing the football, "football toss". In a matter of minutes the instant pudding mix, mixes. Let stand for several minutes. have cups and spoons ready to go. Put in a movie and there you are???
2013-05-28 06:25:47 PM kathyhughes If they are falling in their rooms it can be the lighting
2013-05-28 06:26:07 PM carlota36 asian people relly like to do things with their hands, maybe a squezzy ball or research vietnamesse games it might work
2013-05-28 06:26:09 PM sharonbeseda We had falls, mostly due to UTI
2013-05-28 06:26:22 PM 29645 AS A CNA MYSELF I HAVE TO SAY EVEN WHEN YOU LAY THEM DOWN THEY MOST OFTER TRY TO GET BACK UP FOR THE BATHROOM OR FROM SUNDOWNERS
2013-05-28 06:26:31 PM catejuvenal Residents should not be falling in their rooms- there seems to be an issue with the rooms and not the residents?
2013-05-28 06:26:40 PM kathyhughes UTI's effect a lot of things
2013-05-28 06:26:44 PM deedabbler We have falls with people trying to get to the bathroom.
2013-05-28 06:26:47 PM hhammondg enter the chat room
2013-05-28 06:26:54 PM 29645 YES UTI IS THE MOST COMMON ONES BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT THEM SELVES
2013-05-28 06:26:55 PM ss1325 i did not know UTI's could reak so much havoc on the body and mind until i started working at a facility
2013-05-28 06:27:03 PM kathyhughes Hello Heather
2013-05-28 06:27:15 PM hhammondg Hello. Just in from a community thing...
2013-05-28 06:27:21 PM cmzeitler Could they be trying to get into bed-do their own bedtime routine. Even with low functioning or dementia they still follow a routine in their mind
2013-05-28 06:27:21 PM kathyhughes welcome
2013-05-28 06:27:33 PM nvite664 it's not the room's per say I agree with Kathy most of the time it could be confussion due to a medical condition going on that isn't be caught yet
2013-05-28 06:27:35 PM jamieblue We were told if more activities were offered in the evening there wouldn't be so many falls.
2013-05-28 06:27:39 PM carlota36 nether did I. Now i am afraid of getting a uti
2013-05-28 06:27:50 PM kathyhughes It can also be form their evening meds
2013-05-28 06:27:51 PM carlota36 Kathy y its that
2013-05-28 06:27:58 PM kathyhughes Many meds cause dizziness
2013-05-28 06:27:59 PM slf0038 Thats just nursing trying to pass the buck!
2013-05-28 06:27:59 PM deedabbler Yes, that is true UTI's can cause alot of trouble mentally and physically even in small children.
2013-05-28 06:28:11 PM letroces4 she doesnt respond well even to her husband who communicates with her in vietnamese, she has dementia and gets really anxious and wants to pull and shout... hehe.. she is really cute though... tried playing vietnamese music and the husband and I sang vietnamese song to her (husband taught me a nursery rhyme kinda song hehe), but she didnt respond that well
2013-05-28 06:28:13 PM nvite664 dehydration?
2013-05-28 06:28:13 PM 29645 1325 I DIDNT EITHER I KNEW THEY WERE BAD BUT THE DIFFERENCE THEY CAN MADE ID UNBELIEVABLE
2013-05-28 06:28:15 PM ss1325 yea im actually suprised you have to deal with this
2013-05-28 06:28:18 PM brenda1945 Gets a little lonely in the evening.
2013-05-28 06:28:21 PM hhammondg I was told to be careful with afternoon activities, b/c they thought those caused falls...right after nap, I guess?
2013-05-28 06:28:30 PM kathyhughes that too Nancy
2013-05-28 06:28:42 PM bernlewis Kathy, do we keep time logs for all of the planning and interviewing to turn in?
2013-05-28 06:28:48 PM sharonbeseda Maybe everything is activities fault
2013-05-28 06:28:49 PM cmzeitler What time of day is she having her yelling episodes?
2013-05-28 06:28:58 PM kathyhughes You don't have to Bernadette
2013-05-28 06:29:10 PM deedabbler Sometimes medication before her activity may help if she gets anything for the yelling out, maybe she is in pain.
2013-05-28 06:29:27 PM slf0038 Yeah Sharon, must be an activity thing! ha ha
2013-05-28 06:29:34 PM kathyhughes Perhaps she needs some time to yell.....that might be a good activity?!
2013-05-28 06:29:39 PM sharonbeseda right
2013-05-28 06:29:42 PM ss1325 29645 totally, complete 360 in some residents. is it the UTI that makes the resident different or the meds that they take to help the UTI?
2013-05-28 06:29:42 PM letroces4 hehehe
2013-05-28 06:29:44 PM nvite664 lol
2013-05-28 06:29:53 PM hhammondg Singing at the top of your lungs, maybe?
2013-05-28 06:29:57 PM brenda1945 Sad, has a behavorial doctor been requested. Probably confused.
2013-05-28 06:29:58 PM carlota36 Sharon I think cna and nursing should be thankful we care enough....
2013-05-28 06:29:59 PM cmzeitler the UTI causes confusion
2013-05-28 06:30:01 PM kathyhughes that would work
2013-05-28 06:30:10 PM deedabbler No it isn't activities fault the activities are the solutions for everything. lol
2013-05-28 06:30:15 PM sharonbeseda That is right
2013-05-28 06:30:17 PM kathyhughes right Christine

2013-05-28 06:30:21 PM letroces4 im working with the husband and we are both thinking of ways, he will be coming again on friday to work with me and her in the activity for his wife... its really sweet....
2013-05-28 06:30:26 PM kate9 In my first week of being a director, another activity director told me, "you will be the problem and the solution to everything in the building." I wish I could say that wasn't the case.
2013-05-28 06:30:37 PM brenda1945 CNA's, Nurses, thank you all!
2013-05-28 06:30:41 PM bernlewis Group yelling is good. We uswed to prtend we were at different events and see what kind of yells we could gnerate. We did it outside. Hockey seemed to be the most colorful. :)
2013-05-28 06:30:43 PM kathyhughes You will be Katherine!
2013-05-28 06:30:49 PM catejuvenal Maybe this resident, if not born in the US, is experiencing PTSD. I had a client who lived a full live until he retired and the flashbacks started and he had a stroke
2013-05-28 06:31:04 PM kate9 That's a good suggestion BernLewis
2013-05-28 06:31:05 PM kathyhughes good clue Cate

2013-05-28 06:35:35 PM kate9 Does anyone have any suggestions for someone who yells for long periods of time. I feel like I've tried everything and while she will stop yelling for a brief period of time; once you leave the room, she starts up again....

2013-05-28 06:35:57 PM kathyhughes Kate you are encoraging her to yell
2013-05-28 06:36:03 PM hhammondg Hey, about the Vietnamese woman....when my grandmother unwound with her Alzheimers...she unwound back to her first language: FRENCH. Not so good for rural south GA and communication.
2013-05-28 06:36:29 PM slf0038 Did u try lollipos like I said before? gives them something for their hands and mouth.
2013-05-28 06:36:31 PM kathyhughes everyone is positively reinforcing the yelling
2013-05-28 06:36:34 PM sharonbeseda I was told to get rid of the bubbles because someone might slip
2013-05-28 06:36:38 PM hhammondg The staff had to call my mother and put her on the phone to talk to her in French. It worked until she unwound to pre-verbal.
2013-05-28 06:36:39 PM deedabbler she sounds afraid of being alone, does she like baby dolls?
2013-05-28 06:36:39 PM carlota36 flash cards, i am just saying
2013-05-28 06:36:55 PM bernlewis Cue cards, cue cards, cue cards :) hhammondg
2013-05-28 06:36:58 PM sharonbeseda Maybe she wanats to go home
2013-05-28 06:37:02 PM kate9 You know...I almost suggested that we not use positive reinforcement; but it was something that the team came up with....
2013-05-28 06:37:16 PM kathyhughes all staff needs to go to her when she is quiet
2013-05-28 06:37:19 PM kathyhughes all staff
2013-05-28 06:37:23 PM kathyhughes and volunteers
2013-05-28 06:37:37 PM kathyhughes it takes some coordination but it does work
2013-05-28 06:37:40 PM carlota36 i agree prayse good behavior
2013-05-28 06:37:51 PM kate9 Thanks Kathy...I'm going to tell my care team that this solution has your endorsement...if that's OK.
2013-05-28 06:37:52 PM kathyhughes pay attention when she is quiet
2013-05-28 06:37:58 PM slf0038 Some yell cuz they dont want to be alone.
2013-05-28 06:37:58 PM carlota36 ignor the negative behavior
2013-05-28 06:38:00 PM kathyhughes thats fine
2013-05-28 06:38:04 PM ss1325 sharonbeseda ... that does not sound fun taking away the bubbles!! sounds TOO protective. there is a posibility that you could trip just on your own shoe i do it all the time haha
2013-05-28 06:38:05 PM kathyhughes we did that all the time
2013-05-28 06:38:05 PM brenda1945 Maybe flash cards in her language that she can use to communicate
2013-05-28 06:38:07 PM hhammondg Bubbles work if they are all seated at a table, and you blow them so they pop over the table. Safe.
2013-05-28 06:38:13 PM letroces4 i find that she is just quiet when she looks at her pictures
2013-05-28 06:38:14 PM jacqueline left the chat room
2013-05-28 06:38:16 PM bernlewis It's a non verbal jesture but it could provide the comfort needed without saying anything
2013-05-28 06:38:16 PM jacqueline enter the chat room
2013-05-28 06:38:20 PM letroces4 sometimes.. hehe
2013-05-28 06:38:39 PM sharonbeseda We had a lady that yelled all the time and I believe she was in much pain
2013-05-28 06:39:09 PM slf0038 Has she had a pain assessment?
2013-05-28 06:39:19 PM kathyhughes right Sharon you have to eliminate all the physical conditions first
2013-05-28 06:39:24 PM 29645 YES SHARON WE HAD ONE AS WELL AND I FEEL LIKE SHE WAS IN PAIN TOO
2013-05-28 06:39:27 PM kate9 Yes, they've explored medical reasons for her yelling.
2013-05-28 06:39:30 PM sharonbeseda She is no longer with us
2013-05-28 06:39:31 PM kathyhughes then use positive reinforcement
2013-05-28 06:39:35 PM letroces4 but we are working on trying to get her interested in some activities... im working with husband to gather more pictures, was thinking of making like a little movie of it and let her see it on screen, maybe it will calm her and get her interested longer
2013-05-28 06:40:04 PM sharonbeseda I believe if I had had what she was going through I would have screamed all of the time
2013-05-28 06:40:06 PM jacqueline ive notice that just because the some one yells out doesnt mean their in pain
2013-05-28 06:40:07 PM jamieblue We have a resident who yells out also. And one who growls.
2013-05-28 06:40:10 PM kate9 Letroces...just wanted to check....is she more agitated when her husband is around?
2013-05-28 06:40:15 PM kathyhughes What are you all planning for June?????

2013-05-28 06:42:31 PM kate9 For June....sad to say, but our time is so limited that we're making just going outside an activity. I mean, we'll have some reminiscing and socializiing while doing it; but a lot of our residents just want to go outside and unless we make it an activity, there isn't enough supervision for it.
2013-05-28 06:42:33 PM krkurth i used pinterest for all the crafts this month, and although everyone loved the outcome, they added up too quick haha
2013-05-28 06:42:34 PM ss1325 weekly!! whoa baby
