2017-09-11 05:57:21 PM catiah Good evening!
2017-09-11 05:57:22 PM lynmyhre HI!
2017-09-11 05:57:25 PM jessicarae Hello everyone!
2017-09-11 05:57:27 PM jcking Wondering if she will be on tonight.
2017-09-11 05:57:30 PM taras Good evening everyone!
2017-09-11 05:57:40 PM prymyc hey all
2017-09-11 05:57:56 PM cynkarnes76 Yes, Karyn, how are you doing down there?
2017-09-11 05:58:19 PM catiah I hope she is doing well(y)
2017-09-11 05:58:46 PM cynkarnes76 Anyone else here from Florida or Texas?
2017-09-11 05:59:00 PM jcking no. I'm from Maine
2017-09-11 05:59:02 PM prymyc texas here
2017-09-11 05:59:10 PM karynbrinkley Hi, My name is Karyn Brinkley and I am the mepap alf consultant. Class will start at 8pm. Tonight, I want us to look at a common problem where the activity program seems to be tired. What is needed to change the industry and for quality of life? I really want us to think about what we would want for ourselves if we were the residents.
2017-09-11 05:59:26 PM taras Texas
2017-09-11 05:59:57 PM karynbrinkley My computer has a signal issue since the storm but if it goes out, I will come right back.
2017-09-11 06:00:09 PM jcking Hi Karyn. Glad to here from you.
2017-09-11 06:00:22 PM karynbrinkley Hi! You too!
2017-09-11 06:00:23 PM taras Good to hear from you Karyn!!1
2017-09-11 06:00:34 PM karynbrinkley Hi
2017-09-11 06:00:38 PM karynbrinkley ;)
2017-09-11 06:00:50 PM matthewc Glad to hear all is well with you Karyn.
2017-09-11 06:00:51 PM cynkarnes76 Cynthia Karnes, Mepap1 060617, I do this all the time and get frustrated when I can't come up with an immediate answer to change a program that well has gone stale.
2017-09-11 06:00:52 PM catiah Welcome Karyn

2017-09-11 06:01:21 PM taras I work in Skilled Nursing, but our sister facility is an AL next to us. We get together periodically with them to let the residents interact.
2017-09-11 06:01:36 PM taras oh----Mepap2-060617
2017-09-11 06:01:44 PM lynmyhre That's good strategy, TaraS
2017-09-11 06:01:47 PM jcking I'm also in MEPAP1-060617. My assisted living facility offers a lot of programs.
2017-09-11 06:01:53 PM cynkarnes76 I am in Healthcare but occasionally have programs with AL

2017-09-11 06:02:24 PM matthewc MEPAP2 090517 here! Just completed MEPAP1.
2017-09-11 06:02:27 PM prymyc I am trying to figure out a way to make bingo more exciting. It has become stagnant, but I am worried too because my residents dont like change much
2017-09-11 06:02:28 PM karynbrinkley That is a good idea
2017-09-11 06:02:39 PM shirleym enter the chat room
2017-09-11 06:02:42 PM jessicarae I think for myself I need to start thinking of my residents more than what the staff will think. There are so many activites that we can do, outside of the box, but sometimes we worry about what the nursing staff will think
2017-09-11 06:02:44 PM taras Our AD and theirs collaborated on it. Some residents at my facility have family there. It seems to be working. I know that the AL facility schedules more outings...they are going to a ballet this week!
2017-09-11 06:02:46 PM catiah Iam in Nursing home and I always ask the residents what they want.
2017-09-11 06:02:48 PM cynkarnes76 Your energy is very important to an activity

2017-09-11 06:03:03 PM cynkarnes76 I spice things up for Bingo by how I call the numbers
2017-09-11 06:03:12 PM taras Amen Jessicarae!!! I find that to be true at SNF!!!
2017-09-11 06:03:14 PM sandybenitez90 helloo'
2017-09-11 06:03:23 PM karynbrinkley all true!
2017-09-11 06:03:35 PM jcking We are also a memory care facility.
2017-09-11 06:03:57 PM kat86 I work in AL mostly, and we play for nickles at Bingo. I started tossing in a Jackpot bingo once a month, where the last game (coverall only) is the jackpot of $1. Its gotten a larger crowd
2017-09-11 06:04:06 PM cynkarnes76 I also have to stop getting intimidated and stressed out from all the great answers on here that I am not able to do at my facility for my residents.
2017-09-11 06:04:22 PM jcking We have different levels of activities.
2017-09-11 06:04:43 PM karynbrinkley What would your analysis be if you saw residents just sitting around?
2017-09-11 06:04:45 PM nikki06 enter the chat room
2017-09-11 06:05:07 PM taras Boredom would be my first reaction.
2017-09-11 06:05:08 PM catiah we have different levels too. I need to follow the FTag 248
2017-09-11 06:05:16 PM sandybenitez90 After Harvey, we have began transitioning all the residents from AL that have been ready for MC. It will make my job a little easier
2017-09-11 06:05:17 PM kat86 First be sure they can hear/see
2017-09-11 06:05:25 PM nikki06 Hi all, im in Mepap 2 080117
2017-09-11 06:05:43 PM cynkarnes76 It would be like an asylum but you have to see the whole picture, at times they will be sitting around like that before an activity or during Leisure time .
2017-09-11 06:05:45 PM jcking left the chat room
2017-09-11 06:05:55 PM kat86 may be bored, or simply not interested in that particular activity.
2017-09-11 06:05:56 PM jessicarae First thing I would do is make sure there is music on :)
2017-09-11 06:06:08 PM cynkarnes76 Sandy, what is MC?
2017-09-11 06:06:14 PM catiah I agree Kat86.

2017-09-11 06:06:30 PM sandybenitez90 Memory Care, our Alzheimer and dementia unit
2017-09-11 06:06:35 PM jessicarae But agreed there needs to be time to "just sit around"
2017-09-11 06:06:43 PM cynkarnes76 Yes, I put music on and do a crazy Balloon Volley and incorporated balls etc on Sat and Sun mornings
2017-09-11 06:06:47 PM matthewc I think what becomes tired for our department is honestly the lack of staffing, our visibility in the indicplinary team, and our original assessment and entry interview. We often don't dig deep enough for answers to truly understand the resident and their life/ADL's before entering a facility.
2017-09-11 06:07:06 PM cynkarnes76 Thanks, Sandy, brain dead here
2017-09-11 06:07:13 PM nikki06 i agree, so many people think that they nneed to be doinng someting every minute of everyday when they are awake. noone does that...
2017-09-11 06:07:16 PM jessicarae so true matthewc
2017-09-11 06:07:24 PM karynbrinkley good answer Matthew
2017-09-11 06:07:32 PM lynmyhre I think sitting around time can be fun if you toss up a topic of discussion...especially something fun, like funny things kids do, or best trips to take, etc.
2017-09-11 06:07:34 PM kat86 On our memory care unit, we have lower funcationing resident thats dont really participate in the large groups, but they can still be stimulated by the voices, or one to one help with the activity, or, enjoy music as I have music playing a lot
2017-09-11 06:07:34 PM karynbrinkley nikki, also true
2017-09-11 06:07:46 PM prymyc matthew, I agree. I am the only staff member in a 124 bed facility and I dont always have the time to do an in depth assessment
2017-09-11 06:07:46 PM karynbrinkley perfect lynn
2017-09-11 06:07:51 PM cynkarnes76 Hey, did you know that an activity can also just be allowing them to be outside and enjoy the fresh air
2017-09-11 06:07:57 PM karynbrinkley kat, true

2017-09-11 06:08:12 PM cynkarnes76 Matthew, I had to find out the hard way what you just posted
2017-09-11 06:08:13 PM taras true....Matthew---I love doing initial assessments!! It is imperative to get to know the ins and outs of the resident. There are three of us assistans and one AD. She was told by our admin that she had to do them.... :(

2017-09-11 06:08:48 PM karynbrinkley I saw today where a preschool opened n a community. It was in Seattle.
2017-09-11 06:09:02 PM jcking My residents love to go out. We played bean bag toss outside today.
2017-09-11 06:09:15 PM cynkarnes76 sorry Nikki, you said that spot on about having to be the every minute entertainer
2017-09-11 06:09:22 PM jessicarae Nice! our company is doing this as well in downtown Toronto
2017-09-11 06:09:41 PM karynbrinkley left the chat room
2017-09-11 06:09:42 PM matthewc hmmm...I feel like EVERYTHING is an activity though. Just because theyre not in group/one-on-one, doesnt mean its not an activity. People watching by the elevator is even an activity. When these don't exist, residents get "bored". Boredom leads to what we call in facilities as "BEHAVIORS". Some even want to escape. I mean...I WOULD TOO if I was that resident. lol
2017-09-11 06:09:44 PM lynmyhre I think my residents get into a 'rut' themselves. As a new AD, I've gotten mixed response to things I've put on teh calendar. I tried to add things that match the assessments, but some folks have been there for years and have personally changed, I think. Or, just in a rut. Want to figure out ways to motivate them to try new things. I am considering more connection with local college and high schools.
2017-09-11 06:09:49 PM jessicarae So great for both the kids and elders
2017-09-11 06:09:55 PM cynkarnes76 Karyn: I wish we had that were I worked. Children are a rarity
2017-09-11 06:09:56 PM taras I try to visit the resident on my halls especially to do a 1:1...introduce myself, and see if I can get to know them better, since I do small group activities on my halls.
2017-09-11 06:10:24 PM cynkarnes76 Don't forget "burn out", when we are burn out, things do get stale.

2017-09-11 06:10:51 PM matthewc Welcome back, Karyn.
2017-09-11 06:10:55 PM karynbrinkley lol
2017-09-11 06:10:56 PM catiah I always put something funny on TV while Iam doing act. w/ small group
2017-09-11 06:10:59 PM karynbrinkley TY
2017-09-11 06:11:12 PM cynkarnes76 Yes Matthew, that is sooooooo true.
2017-09-11 06:11:18 PM kat86 yes. burn out has been a problem in my department. Our director, sadly, like to keep the calendar cookie cutter and doesnt allow much variety. So I have been finding ways to change up the same activities
2017-09-11 06:11:27 PM gmollan Gorgia Mollan here. Taking Mepap 2. I work in an Assisted Living Facility, about 71 beds.
2017-09-11 06:11:35 PM shirleym my residents like watching cute kittens & puppies on youtube! FUN!
2017-09-11 06:11:39 PM kat86 otherwise, its easy to lose energy when you do the same thing every day
2017-09-11 06:11:44 PM cynkarnes76 I also think of the ones who have passed on and constantly try to do better each time, and spend that extra few minutes with a resident
2017-09-11 06:11:50 PM karynbrinkley Sometimes activity directors can be the problem whe they burn out
2017-09-11 06:11:57 PM karynbrinkley how do we help them?
2017-09-11 06:12:06 PM taras we recently tried to revamp our calendar (our AD has been doing this for 23 years) but we have some residents that are upset that their routine was disrupted!!
2017-09-11 06:12:12 PM catiah Shileym they love the babies video
2017-09-11 06:12:22 PM matthewc shirley, theres one resident in particular who only does 1:1, and she LOVES when I bring the laptop to her room to watch cat videos on youtube. She can laugh for hours.
2017-09-11 06:12:22 PM jcking Make sure we have a lot of energy.
2017-09-11 06:12:26 PM prymyc I do two new activities a month. then at the end of the month we assess them (the residents and I) and see what they liked and what they didnt. Then if they liked one or both, we take off one of our stagnant activities and add the new one or ones they liked
2017-09-11 06:12:33 PM prymyc that way we are always changing things up
2017-09-11 06:12:46 PM karynbrinkley good idea prymyc
2017-09-11 06:12:48 PM cynkarnes76 I have been trying to step up and take on extra activities but it is tough since I am part time and I end up doing a lot of unpaid work
2017-09-11 06:12:56 PM prymyc ty
2017-09-11 06:13:01 PM nikki06 how about evening programs? how often and how late?
2017-09-11 06:13:11 PM sandybenitez90 I try to add new things monthly too. I know I don't do good when i burn out
2017-09-11 06:13:13 PM taras I need to remember that...to do a review after the month...see what was enjoyed and what wasn't
2017-09-11 06:13:20 PM shirleym thanks catiah. I'll check that out. Mathhew that's a great idea to take laptop in for 1:1 : )
2017-09-11 06:13:21 PM jessicarae and weekends??
2017-09-11 06:13:24 PM matthewc Karyn, I'm currently in the situation now. I want to help my activity director so bad sometimes, but I also feel like I'm stepping on her toes, and feel like she seems me as trying to replace her or "do her job". Any advice on approacing that?
2017-09-11 06:14:05 PM gmollan Karynbrinkley: Volunteers to help run activities if you have the means. Some places dont have a lot of volunteers but I know local churches and high school students love to volunteer. You can have a little breather if you are brunt out. Change the routine as well helps.
2017-09-11 06:14:14 PM kat86 great idea prymyc. I'd like to use that idea to see if my AD will let me try out a few new things!

2017-09-11 06:14:43 PM matthewc Nikki, we do an evening activity M-F at 6:45. None on weekends.
2017-09-11 06:14:44 PM prymyc its helps keep from getting too bored with an activity
2017-09-11 06:14:52 PM catiah New things always help me to change the routine
2017-09-11 06:14:54 PM prymyc of course bingo is the one constant!!!!
2017-09-11 06:14:58 PM lynmyhre It helps me to get the frequently engaged folks to come to new things...they talk it up to otheres. I will be evaluating some of the new things at my next Resident meeting.
2017-09-11 06:15:00 PM taras Volunteers are indeed an asset on the weekends....it's just getting the residents there to the scheduled activity
2017-09-11 06:15:05 PM shirleym oh yes...BINGO!
2017-09-11 06:15:06 PM jcking I'm in the same situation Matthew
2017-09-11 06:15:11 PM jessicarae Are there some favorite evening activties?
2017-09-11 06:15:19 PM kat86 We do evening activities twice a week. 5:30 and 6:15. Attendance starts to fizzle out on those as it gets darj earlier.
2017-09-11 06:15:28 PM cynkarnes76 I do evening activities, each night is a different theme. some things work, others no so much
2017-09-11 06:15:42 PM taras Music...dominoes....movie/popcorn
2017-09-11 06:15:44 PM kat86 We play Bunco after dinner on my late night. Its easy, quick, great for a group of any size
2017-09-11 06:15:46 PM matthewc jcking, especially when she found out I was taking these classes. I feel like I'm walking on eggshells sometimes :(
2017-09-11 06:15:47 PM jessicarae I find participation low anytime after 6pm in NH
2017-09-11 06:15:48 PM catiah In my facility we go outing for dinner. They love it
2017-09-11 06:16:15 PM kat86 half of my residents just gather in the parlor to watch the evening news, and dont want you turning that off
2017-09-11 06:16:21 PM prymyc we do dinner and a movie once a month and that is a huge hit
2017-09-11 06:16:29 PM jcking Me too Matthew. I just want to hellp our department.
2017-09-11 06:16:38 PM matthewc Our evening participation is much lower than morning, and afternoon, but still a good group.
2017-09-11 06:16:39 PM karynbrinkley Matthew, I can understand your concern but maybe ask if she will allow you to test some things as assigned in the class. I think the delivery could be everything.
2017-09-11 06:16:39 PM cynkarnes76 We have an AL resident volunteer who plays piano every Friday at 6:30, musical mondays, Tuesday travelogues, Wednesday Comedy and Thursday Variety Show, all at 6:30
2017-09-11 06:16:43 PM catiah We do too prymyc
2017-09-11 06:17:03 PM gmollan We do chair yoga in the healing garden in the evenings three times a week. It starts at 6 so they have plently of time to "get ready for bed". They are set in their ways...lol
2017-09-11 06:17:09 PM jessicarae nice those are great ideas!
2017-09-11 06:17:11 PM shirleym that sounds like a terrific program cynkarnes76
2017-09-11 06:17:34 PM taras Interesting cynkarnes76!!!
2017-09-11 06:17:43 PM sandybenitez90 Love it CynKarnes
2017-09-11 06:17:45 PM kat86 Weekends are lighter. Exercise in the A.M in each area. half hour afternoon chat or dice game with memory care followed by a sing a long video or musical video, bingo with AL.
2017-09-11 06:17:46 PM matthewc Oooh, can you go into further detail about your Wednesday Comedy and Thursday Variety show?
2017-09-11 06:17:59 PM cynkarnes76 Shirley: Thanks but some of it needs spicing up
2017-09-11 06:17:59 PM catiah I did it karynbrinkley and it worked very well for me!(v)
2017-09-11 06:18:05 PM shirleym i like the idea of chair yoga in the garden gmollan. Nice!
2017-09-11 06:18:09 PM karynbrinkley good
2017-09-11 06:18:48 PM catiah I only had 4 residents for chair yoga
2017-09-11 06:18:49 PM kat86 chair yoga outdoors would be lovely to add for our IL residents. We have a Japanese garden that would be the perfect place to have it
2017-09-11 06:19:00 PM matthewc How big is your facility catiah?
2017-09-11 06:19:06 PM jcking On weekend mornings we have coffee and use conversation cards. They enjoy sharing their memories.
2017-09-11 06:19:07 PM jessicarae catiah same here
2017-09-11 06:19:13 PM catiah 285 beds
2017-09-11 06:19:32 PM lynmyhre How do you get the comedy? Is it a volunteer? cynkarnes76
2017-09-11 06:19:41 PM jcking your are in a 285 bed facility?
2017-09-11 06:19:59 PM taras Chair yoga...I wouldlike to look into that for my SNF residents!!!
2017-09-11 06:19:59 PM cynkarnes76 Wednesday Comedy is like anything Comedy related (a music show with comedy, an old tv show like golden girls, I use the youtube and mirror on the big tv but you can get DVDs at the library) I have been playing with the idea of doing a knock knock half hour type of activity haven't gotten up the nerve to do it
2017-09-11 06:20:14 PM catiah Yes jcking.
2017-09-11 06:20:28 PM gmollan You can put on some easy music and litterally do regular yoga sitting in a chair. They love it. It relax them and gives them exercise.
2017-09-11 06:20:47 PM sandybenitez90 Ohh thats nice. I have residents that go around telling jokes they read on newspaper
2017-09-11 06:20:48 PM jcking I need to try and locate good volunteer entertainers.
2017-09-11 06:21:02 PM taras Interesting!!!
2017-09-11 06:21:03 PM lynmyhre I'd love to create a Zen Garden or a Labyrinth
2017-09-11 06:21:14 PM kat86 you could also do more of an evening stretch if yoga isnt well recieved
2017-09-11 06:21:17 PM cynkarnes76 My favority Variety Show is Hollywood Palace that I mirror off the big screen but I have showed an old America's Got Talent. We don't have the DVR, so I can't tape anything.
2017-09-11 06:22:02 PM karynbrinkley love these ideas
2017-09-11 06:22:03 PM jcking We did a lot of gardening this summer. It was really fun, My complaint is lack of time to get everything done.
2017-09-11 06:22:14 PM sandybenitez90 What does it mean to mirror off big screen?
2017-09-11 06:22:33 PM gmollan Try your local high shool for volunteers... it looks great on college resumes.
2017-09-11 06:22:39 PM matthewc Mirroring is basically showing whatever is on your phone/laptop/tablet and showing it on your tv screen
2017-09-11 06:22:42 PM catiah Movie & popcorn is always welcome for evening activities
2017-09-11 06:22:49 PM cynkarnes76 But it is true so many go to bed right after dinner. And I have a tough time with our sundowning residents in the separate sitting area (which I originally called the dumping ground, my AD didn't like that name)
2017-09-11 06:22:58 PM nikki06 findinng voluntneer entertainers are so hard. most of my residents went to the theater and opera their whole lives and they expect quality too. So a top notch volunteer proformer is SOOOO hard to find :(
2017-09-11 06:23:05 PM cynkarnes76 Yep, my AD has an Apple TV
2017-09-11 06:23:12 PM jessicarae Sooooo true cynkarnes76
2017-09-11 06:23:15 PM sandybenitez90 Ohhh i thought mirroring is re enacting whats on tv lol
2017-09-11 06:23:21 PM matthewc haha
2017-09-11 06:23:31 PM shirleym hehehe!
2017-09-11 06:23:52 PM lynmyhre I am trying to put together a talent show...not sure if I want to just do staff and resident talent or open to public (have them audition...). Any suggestions? Anyone done one before?
2017-09-11 06:24:11 PM kat86 we JUST did a talent show and it was residents and staff and it was a hit!
2017-09-11 06:24:19 PM kat86 we called it Variety Show
2017-09-11 06:24:21 PM sandybenitez90 Anyone else here a little on the shy side? and find it hard to entertain?
2017-09-11 06:24:23 PM catiah We can have Netflex and show what they want to watch!
2017-09-11 06:24:23 PM karynbrinkley it is a lot of fun
2017-09-11 06:24:36 PM taras Residents and staff would be a lot of fun!!!!
2017-09-11 06:24:41 PM kat86 marketing team did a super cool skit
2017-09-11 06:24:46 PM cynkarnes76 Talent show: I was in one that an IL resident put together, a lot of work and you need to have a lot of volunteers and staff support
2017-09-11 06:24:50 PM matthewc lyn, Maybe ask the residents? Let them be involved in planning the talent show. I always find them LOVE doing things that make them feel important/have a job role.
2017-09-11 06:24:54 PM nikki06 sandy, i find it easier to entertain and harder to sit and have the in depth conversations.
2017-09-11 06:24:58 PM sandybenitez90 Ive seen ADs that are just so loud and funny and outoging. I can be fun but I get shy around other staff
2017-09-11 06:25:02 PM karynbrinkley good idea Matthew
2017-09-11 06:25:15 PM kat86 another group of staff dressed as the Andrews Sisters and lip-synced to Boogie Woogie Buggle Boy
2017-09-11 06:25:20 PM sandybenitez90 IM all for sit down and socializing once we get into it
2017-09-11 06:25:21 PM karynbrinkley lol
2017-09-11 06:25:29 PM matthewc thanks :)
2017-09-11 06:25:30 PM cynkarnes76 Unfortunately, internet connection is so spotty I gave up on netflix movies at night (my AD has no problem during the day)
2017-09-11 06:25:44 PM jcking does anyone work for next step healthcare?
2017-09-11 06:26:18 PM catiah I did A Resident Fashion Show one time and it was a blest.
2017-09-11 06:26:19 PM taras left the chat room
2017-09-11 06:26:19 PM taras enter the chat room
2017-09-11 06:26:21 PM kat86 I'm on the shy side when it comes to stuff like...sing a longs or reading in front of large groups. I could never lead a sing a long myself
2017-09-11 06:27:01 PM catiah I understand you Kat86!
2017-09-11 06:27:02 PM kat86 Fashion Shows are fun catiah! we have one once a year. A local company brings in items. Residents and staff pick two outfits to model. And the store sets up shopping area
2017-09-11 06:27:04 PM cynkarnes76 I used to be very very shy as a kid but the more I became comfortable with myself and said the heck with it the more I was able to let the real me out
2017-09-11 06:27:16 PM lynmyhre Great idea, Matthew. I was planning to mention it at Resident Council, but maybe will create an outline of 'jobs' and a 'to do' list to make it more real!
2017-09-11 06:27:25 PM matthewc kat, I was the SAME way years ago when I started. I often questioned if I was in the right profession. It's understandable.
2017-09-11 06:27:32 PM sandybenitez90 Ive done fashion show in past wheni was assistant. My AD put it together. It was great. im afraid to try it
2017-09-11 06:27:34 PM lynmyhre Fashion show...cool idea.
2017-09-11 06:27:35 PM sandybenitez90 on my own
2017-09-11 06:27:41 PM jcking We had a veteran's meeting over the weekend and it was so much fun. A younger vet came in to hear our vet's stories.
2017-09-11 06:27:52 PM taras Fashion show sounds like a lot of work but a lot of fun as well.
2017-09-11 06:27:55 PM gmollan The best thing i found for singing.... the dogs howl when I sing.... I have one of my residents start it and they litterally just fall in all toether.... then they can't here me! ;)
2017-09-11 06:27:59 PM kat86 I'm actually going to present the idea of a Retro Fashion show to add to my calendar next month
2017-09-11 06:27:59 PM catiah I let the family and residents pick their best outfit for the Resident Fashion Show.
2017-09-11 06:28:35 PM taras Do you serve refreshments as well? Seems like every activity the residents want some sort of snack!!
2017-09-11 06:28:36 PM matthewc lyn, great idea! I think you will find enthusiasm as you mention the roles of jobs. They will be happy to help and once they do, they'll really be into it.
2017-09-11 06:28:42 PM karynbrinkley love all these ideas
2017-09-11 06:28:47 PM jcking I'm having a car show and a fashion show/tea party on the same day.
2017-09-11 06:28:49 PM sandybenitez90 jcking I added veterens group for this month, im excited because I have one very active female veteran resident and she is different. She didnt have kids or get married so she doesnt really fit into ladies club. But she is a proud veteran
2017-09-11 06:28:57 PM shirleym i know right, tara? LOL!
2017-09-11 06:29:19 PM jessicarae We tried a new game this past week called penny ante. Residents loved it. Anyone else tried it?
2017-09-11 06:29:31 PM karynbrinkley tell us about it
2017-09-11 06:29:32 PM jcking I bet it will be really fun Sandy. Good luck!
2017-09-11 06:29:38 PM taras Seriously----I had a group of four that wanted to play 42....after I had everything set up, they were asking for something to eat!!
2017-09-11 06:29:39 PM cynkarnes76 The culture of my healthcare is very hospital like (medical model) so unless Admin sits on the nursing staff or I plea for a lot of help like this past Sunday, hard to get a lot of support since nursing and CNAs are so stressed and spread thin with their duties
2017-09-11 06:29:43 PM catiah What is penny ante?
2017-09-11 06:29:58 PM shirleym that sounds like a great program sandy
2017-09-11 06:30:15 PM cynkarnes76 I love penny ante, we don't have it at Cokesbury but I played it at my last job
2017-09-11 06:30:40 PM catiah ????????
2017-09-11 06:30:48 PM jessicarae its basically a card game that allows for great conversation. You use pennies (we used poker chips as we dont have pennies in canada anymore)
2017-09-11 06:30:48 PM nikki06 ive never played penny ante
2017-09-11 06:31:23 PM matthewc Never played Penny Ante.
2017-09-11 06:31:33 PM catiah It seems very interesting jessicarae!
2017-09-11 06:31:36 PM karynbrinkley sounds fun
2017-09-11 06:31:49 PM taras Never played it either. Sounds fun....
2017-09-11 06:31:52 PM jessicarae Resdient picks a card and so many throw in apenny if they have ridden a horse (just say thats what the card says) then you go around and talk about your time riding a horse. its cute
2017-09-11 06:31:58 PM cynkarnes76 You just have to make sure your memory care resident types don
2017-09-11 06:32:04 PM cynkarnes76 t eat the pennies
2017-09-11 06:32:07 PM catiah Can we buy the cards jessica?
2017-09-11 06:32:09 PM jessicarae right lol
2017-09-11 06:32:11 PM karynbrinkley it gives an opportunity for socialization
2017-09-11 06:32:16 PM jessicarae its on amazon
2017-09-11 06:32:18 PM taras Sounds like a good reminiscing activity as well!!
2017-09-11 06:32:23 PM karynbrinkley true
2017-09-11 06:32:25 PM shirleym that sounds like a fun game jessie
2017-09-11 06:32:26 PM jessicarae yes it is
2017-09-11 06:32:45 PM jcking My residents have bee asking to bake. That time of year I guess.
2017-09-11 06:32:55 PM gmollan Use oyster crackers so if they do eat it, it's not harmful to them. We do that in our Creatie care program.
2017-09-11 06:33:06 PM catiah I will look for it, thanks jessica!
2017-09-11 06:33:09 PM shirleym good idea gmollan
2017-09-11 06:33:16 PM lynmyhre Jcking- We aer forming a vet group. I love that idea. We are close to a Joint Base (mostly guard, reserve). Im retired USAF
2017-09-11 06:33:19 PM jessicarae oh thats a good idea!! the crackers
2017-09-11 06:33:27 PM cynkarnes76 I do a new trivia activity on Tuesday 3:30pm activity and it is tough but I incorporate visuals from the tv, including music from you tube.
2017-09-11 06:33:37 PM matthewc We just baked today! We do a Baking For A Cause. We bake dog treats and sell them the next day. We (the residents that baked) then choose a charity/organization to send the money to.
2017-09-11 06:33:42 PM karynbrinkley we used cheerios for bingo in MC
2017-09-11 06:33:44 PM kat86 you could maybe even have some fun little sign (like smiley faces) that higher functioning residents could hold up if they have done the thing
2017-09-11 06:34:11 PM cynkarnes76 Gmollan, awesome, oyster crackers, nice
2017-09-11 06:34:27 PM shirleym i LOVE that idea matthew!
2017-09-11 06:34:27 PM nikki06 not a bad idea for the cherrios. do you get more players or more snackers?
2017-09-11 06:34:31 PM taras Love the cheerios/oyster crackers idea...!
2017-09-11 06:34:44 PM jcking We have made a lot of money selling dog bones. People love their pets.
2017-09-11 06:34:57 PM catiah we use Hershe's kisses for bingo Karyn!
2017-09-11 06:35:13 PM jcking We do both cooked and uncooked recipes.
2017-09-11 06:35:26 PM matthewc yeah, its a great idea! It's fun because all the residents have their own "dog dough" in front of them to make the dog treats from.
2017-09-11 06:35:32 PM cynkarnes76 I love the charity ideas, but incorporating them without AD support is tough
2017-09-11 06:35:59 PM cynkarnes76 Matt: What type of gloves do you use?
2017-09-11 06:36:03 PM catiah I agree cynkarnes
2017-09-11 06:36:15 PM gmollan For National Assisted Living week : we have a cupcake showdown tomorrow! So exciting. The residents baked and all the staff bakes and we sell it for the Alzhiemers Association. They have a blast. The residents seel and control the money. They love it.

2017-09-11 06:37:12 PM cynkarnes76 Yes, facilites that have a lot of staff support are able to do so much
