2018-10-31 06:05:59 PM anneo I don't work in Adult Day Health - I'm in an AL/MC community
2018-10-31 06:06:16 PM jackiem what are the qualifications to be an aide in one?
2018-10-31 06:06:44 PM tanea37 we do have young adults here though

2018-10-31 06:07:12 PM tanea37 ok

2018-10-31 06:08:11 PM molleem In my center we're open from 7am-6pm. We have people that come in and leave throughout the day.
2018-10-31 06:08:42 PM anneo General common rooms or are private rooms to nap?
2018-10-31 06:08:49 PM molleem Participants range from 50-mid to late nineties.
2018-10-31 06:09:09 PM tanea37 I would love to find activities that peak the younger group of people in our facility
2018-10-31 06:09:20 PM cchase ADH does not typicall have beds - it is a day program only
2018-10-31 06:09:27 PM molleem We have one quiet room that is private and another designated quiet area.
2018-10-31 06:09:56 PM noraim87 enter the chat room
2018-10-31 06:10:07 PM cchase quiet areas are sooo important for this environment -it can be overstimulating for some
2018-10-31 06:10:21 PM molleem We do encourage participants to be active during the day but sometimes, especially if they are are with us 8+ hours a day they need a break.
2018-10-31 06:10:32 PM noraim87 Hello everyone

2018-10-31 06:12:22 PM cchase some basics
2018-10-31 06:12:37 PM cchase there are generally two types of Adult Day centers
2018-10-31 06:13:05 PM cchase one is more a social program the other is a medical model day program
2018-10-31 06:13:15 PM anneo Tanea37 - Food is always a good draw for all age groups - sensory activity, Groovy Smoothie Tasting Challenge. Let them sample the varieties fof smoothies and guess what fruit they are made of....

2018-10-31 06:13:57 PM cchase anyone can share activities for the younger participants
2018-10-31 06:14:11 PM cchase ty molleem
2018-10-31 06:14:40 PM noraim87 i know art works for both older and yonger
2018-10-31 06:14:44 PM cchase the medical model is required to follow regulations much like LTC but social models do not
2018-10-31 06:14:45 PM noraim87 younger*
2018-10-31 06:14:49 PM tanea37 What is the medical model group do?
2018-10-31 06:14:51 PM molleem We have a nurse on staff for medications or any medical treatments that a participant would need druing the day.
2018-10-31 06:15:26 PM cchase medical model staff will include nurses, therapist, social workers, etc. whereas social models do not
2018-10-31 06:15:38 PM tanea37 ok
2018-10-31 06:15:51 PM noraim87 that's good to know
2018-10-31 06:15:55 PM anneo Tanea37: We also made some homemade drums with hard coardboard columns from Lowe's and a leather looking vinyl on top. We use our drum sticks and have drumming class - it's fun for all ages. Drumming to music of choice, finding a rythem and routine is good physcial exercise and a good cognitive exercise too.
2018-10-31 06:15:55 PM cchase yes.. that is a requirement due to any possible emergency issues

2018-10-31 06:17:49 PM jackiem ok thank you
2018-10-31 06:17:51 PM anneo I will go and check out the article....
2018-10-31 06:17:55 PM noraim87 are the social one more like an activity department in facilities?
2018-10-31 06:18:09 PM noraim87 Thank you
2018-10-31 06:18:17 PM cchase social models are generally more like senior centers of sorts
2018-10-31 06:18:34 PM noraim87 ok
2018-10-31 06:18:35 PM cchase field trip, social opportunities etc.
2018-10-31 06:18:56 PM anneo Field trips too? That's great!
2018-10-31 06:18:58 PM cchase molleem - how would you describe your center and what they do??
2018-10-31 06:19:04 PM molleem The difference I've notice is that we offer more medical care and personal care.
2018-10-31 06:19:12 PM noraim87 field trips are awesome
2018-10-31 06:19:35 PM tanea37 that is good that they have those type of activities like field trips
2018-10-31 06:19:50 PM molleem We have 25-40 participants that range from 50-90+ with a wide vareity of interests and abilities.
2018-10-31 06:19:51 PM jackiem thats awesome
2018-10-31 06:20:12 PM cchase indeed,, it is a busy day in adult day
2018-10-31 06:20:14 PM anneo Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, we have an ADH in our city and I've seen them at a downtown lunch concert and picnic.

2018-10-31 06:20:41 PM anneo Do they have an Activity Department?
2018-10-31 06:21:01 PM cchase CNA's Rn's , social workers, PT, OT, speech therapy, and more

2018-10-31 06:22:18 PM jackiem how many actvities assistants?
2018-10-31 06:22:29 PM tanea37 thats nice for them to have that knowledge

2018-10-31 06:22:47 PM cchase we call it predictable respite
2018-10-31 06:23:02 PM anneo Good despcription!
2018-10-31 06:23:06 PM cchase families can predit the day time hours for help
2018-10-31 06:23:20 PM tanea37 wow
2018-10-31 06:23:26 PM molleem We have a lot of people that come to the center because their family caregivers work during the day.
2018-10-31 06:23:33 PM cchase it is also called... "age in place" because seniors get to stay home as they age
2018-10-31 06:23:40 PM cchase hello karen
2018-10-31 06:23:48 PM anneo Is this covered by LTC Insurance or Medicare?
2018-10-31 06:24:08 PM noraim87 that's great that they have people to hold accountable
2018-10-31 06:24:16 PM cchase some are private payers others may qualify for state funding
2018-10-31 06:24:35 PM cchase some long term insurances will also provide funding
2018-10-31 06:24:37 PM karenfabian hello
2018-10-31 06:24:52 PM tanea37 good to know
2018-10-31 06:24:58 PM noraim87 do they have to have a referral?
2018-10-31 06:25:00 PM molleem A lot of people go through their local Council on Aging to get funding.
2018-10-31 06:25:27 PM cchase ADh for medical model will do care plans, progress notes, participation , all of the same as in LTC
2018-10-31 06:25:42 PM tanea37 ok
2018-10-31 06:25:47 PM cchase we often get participants from referrals
2018-10-31 06:26:00 PM noraim87 ok
2018-10-31 06:26:06 PM anneo I'm assuming medicine management as well....
2018-10-31 06:26:30 PM cchase yes - the council will provide a "limit" based funding. usual a certain amt. or a certain number of days
2018-10-31 06:26:55 PM tanea37 do you have to have a different type of licence in activities to work in an adult day center
2018-10-31 06:26:55 PM cchase yes.. my RN;s provide medical oversight
2018-10-31 06:27:18 PM cchase but social models do certify staff to dispense medication
2018-10-31 06:27:50 PM anneo Are fees based on a day rate? or 1/2 day rate? Hourly?
2018-10-31 06:27:51 PM cchase Adult Day Health centers must be licensed by the state it is operating from
2018-10-31 06:27:52 PM molleem Where I am only LPN's and up can dispense meds.
2018-10-31 06:28:02 PM tanea37 ok
2018-10-31 06:28:34 PM cchase fees are based on aquity levels..the more help assistance that is needed to more the fee
2018-10-31 06:28:55 PM molleem But DD aides can do meds, it makes it confusing for people who have aged out of workshops and are now getting used to a whole new set of regs.
2018-10-31 06:29:15 PM karenfabian So, same Health Insp. Survery every 15 months?
2018-10-31 06:29:16 PM cchase independent participants can manage very well on their own so they are not chrged as much
2018-10-31 06:29:22 PM noraim87 do you get total pt?
2018-10-31 06:29:42 PM anneo left the chat room
2018-10-31 06:29:47 PM cchase yes... they are now going to be part of the survey process... it is long time coming
2018-10-31 06:29:47 PM tanea37 what is the price range per day
2018-10-31 06:29:57 PM anneo enter the chat room
2018-10-31 06:30:07 PM anneo When does that assessment happen, the day of admittance in ADH or is there a pre-assessment needed. Is this done at ADH or participants home?
2018-10-31 06:30:57 PM arutgers78 enter the chat room
2018-10-31 06:31:11 PM arutgers78 Hello everybody
2018-10-31 06:31:16 PM noraim87 hello
2018-10-31 06:31:34 PM tanea37 hello
2018-10-31 06:31:38 PM cchase $$ can be any range from 95 to 150 ish
2018-10-31 06:31:46 PM tanea37 wow
2018-10-31 06:31:51 PM noraim87 wow
2018-10-31 06:32:06 PM anneo I would have thought it would be much more expensive - that is reasonable.
2018-10-31 06:32:10 PM arutgers78 I have a random question
2018-10-31 06:32:31 PM noraim87 do they provide lunch for them
2018-10-31 06:32:40 PM jackiem ok sorry,i really don't know what to add to it just yet
2018-10-31 06:32:41 PM arutgers78 do you have to have resident council in a skilled nursing that is based on short term?
2018-10-31 06:32:44 PM molleem We provide a hot lunch.
2018-10-31 06:32:45 PM cchase yes very reasonable when you think of how much LTC costs.
2018-10-31 06:32:53 PM cchase what is your random question
2018-10-31 06:33:38 PM cchase skilled nursing facilites are req. by regs to have a resident council
2018-10-31 06:33:41 PM arutgers78 do you have to have resident council in short term facility if the residents just stay 3 to 4 weeks?
2018-10-31 06:33:51 PM jackiem i was really just reading what people were saying trying to get all the info on adult day cares
2018-10-31 06:34:03 PM cchase breakfast, lunch and PM snack is offered
2018-10-31 06:34:14 PM cchase registered dietition on board as well
2018-10-31 06:34:21 PM arutgers78 thank you
2018-10-31 06:34:34 PM jackiem we had 1 person 1 time come in for adult day care at our nursing home, and that was about a year ago,we haven't had one sinvce
2018-10-31 06:34:39 PM jackiem since
2018-10-31 06:34:46 PM cchase ok jackiem
2018-10-31 06:35:00 PM tanea37 that is great
2018-10-31 06:35:01 PM noraim87 ok good, i was wondering why my resident always say he's not hungry when he's back
2018-10-31 06:35:03 PM jackiem she seemed to have just been there at 2 meals and then went home
2018-10-31 06:35:07 PM anneo Is there typically a kitchen providing the food or is it prepared and brought in by a catering supply company.
2018-10-31 06:35:08 PM karenfabian Do you have mostly group activities or 1-1?
2018-10-31 06:35:40 PM molleem How do you do resident/particpant council in adult day? We never have the same group from day to day.
2018-10-31 06:35:55 PM molleem It makes it challenging to get opinions.
2018-10-31 06:36:01 PM jackiem i don't remember her being in any activities though,so i'm not really sure of what came of it...maybe it didn't work out the way my facility had hoped for
2018-10-31 06:36:04 PM cchase yes... kitchen is on the premises...but breakfast & snack is usually prepared on site whereas lunch is sent in from off site service
2018-10-31 06:36:40 PM tanea37 ok
2018-10-31 06:36:53 PM noraim87 good to know
2018-10-31 06:37:06 PM cchase we do it more as a activity brainstorming group... they get to plan the upcoming month and what they would like it to look like
2018-10-31 06:37:17 PM tanea37 is there a specific diet that they have liike in skilled nurding
2018-10-31 06:37:19 PM jackiem do you need the same qualifications in an adult day care for an activities assistant as you do in a nursing home setting?
2018-10-31 06:37:31 PM cchase this meeting takes place over a period of time so all can be included
2018-10-31 06:37:41 PM anneo Is food including in the pricing or extra?
2018-10-31 06:37:49 PM cchase yes... diets are regulated very carefully
2018-10-31 06:38:06 PM cchase we have diets of all sorts, allergies, etc
2018-10-31 06:38:13 PM cchase food in included
2018-10-31 06:38:16 PM cchase in pricing
2018-10-31 06:38:18 PM molleem Ok, that's pretty much what I end up doing but I always worry that I'm not including someone.
2018-10-31 06:38:22 PM noraim87 it's good that you inculde everyone in the meeting
2018-10-31 06:38:27 PM anneo Do you take special diets (pureed, etc)
2018-10-31 06:38:34 PM tanea37 ok
2018-10-31 06:38:43 PM cchase the dietition regulates the meals
2018-10-31 06:38:55 PM cchase based on the participants health record
2018-10-31 06:38:58 PM molleem Our lunch facility does purees, mechanical, etc.
2018-10-31 06:39:03 PM jackiem what are some other activities that you provide?
2018-10-31 06:39:09 PM cchase yes.. special diets are available
2018-10-31 06:39:25 PM anneo What about people with feeding tubes? We are not allowed to have anyone in our LTC as per state regs.
2018-10-31 06:40:12 PM molleem We do exercies, brain games, card games, some individual activities like writing to a soldier or adult coloring books.
2018-10-31 06:40:18 PM cchase that has been a tricky slippery slope but we are allowed to have that participant...we feel it is more of an issue of privacy
2018-10-31 06:40:20 PM jackiem nice
2018-10-31 06:40:46 PM noraim87 what kind of field trips do you have?
2018-10-31 06:41:08 PM anneo I understand
2018-10-31 06:41:11 PM arutgers78 I don't have any this year.
2018-10-31 06:41:12 PM noraim87 or go on?
2018-10-31 06:41:17 PM jackiem how often do you do field trips?
2018-10-31 06:41:36 PM molleem Depends on where the participants want to go.
2018-10-31 06:41:50 PM jackiem we have two a week
2018-10-31 06:42:23 PM molleem We go on a "big" trip at least once a month but we have a store right next door that participants can go to much more often.
2018-10-31 06:42:25 PM cchase they go all around for field trip... we have beautiful gardens and farms and many places they ask for
2018-10-31 06:42:28 PM jackiem i mean one is scenic drive, the other is either a restaraunt outing or a museum, etc,or shopping trip
2018-10-31 06:42:40 PM noraim87 nice...
2018-10-31 06:42:47 PM karenfabian How many activity people do you have?
2018-10-31 06:43:06 PM cchase we do more field trips in better weather of course but try to keep them going weather permitting
2018-10-31 06:43:13 PM molleem My group likes a local aviation museum, a historic cemetary that has a great bus tour.
2018-10-31 06:43:23 PM cchase I do not want them out when falls are a risk
2018-10-31 06:43:30 PM jackiem true
2018-10-31 06:43:50 PM cchase I have an AD and 4 activity assistants
2018-10-31 06:44:04 PM anneo Sounds fun! Also dynamic becuase every day you can have a different mix of participants!
2018-10-31 06:44:08 PM cchase but remember that all staff are part of activities
2018-10-31 06:44:14 PM jackiem we have an AD and 3 assistants
2018-10-31 06:44:52 PM cchase the cnas actually like to help with activities - it gives them a change of pace
2018-10-31 06:45:00 PM molleem We have a AD, a STNA and three aides.
2018-10-31 06:45:14 PM noraim87 i try to incorporate Museums and visits to Ocean Beach but transportations are really hard .
2018-10-31 06:45:20 PM anneo molleem - what is an STNA
2018-10-31 06:45:27 PM jackiem i wish our staff would participate more...they feel like they shouldn't have tohelp get residents to an activity
2018-10-31 06:45:56 PM tanea37 me being a CNA i enjoy helping in activities
2018-10-31 06:45:57 PM jackiem state tested nurses aide
2018-10-31 06:46:09 PM cchase we have four large box vans and one mini caravan that is ours for transport
2018-10-31 06:46:33 PM jackiem we have one mini bus
2018-10-31 06:46:40 PM cchase some are actually picked up in the morning to come to the center and taken home by our transport
2018-10-31 06:46:53 PM tanea37 Was an activity aide for 2 years
2018-10-31 06:46:54 PM jackiem we can only take 14 residents total
2018-10-31 06:47:17 PM cchase they are required to help and especially to get residents to activities.
2018-10-31 06:47:30 PM cchase surveys are watching for that
2018-10-31 06:47:35 PM jackiem some are great at it,many are not
2018-10-31 06:47:39 PM noraim87 thats great
2018-10-31 06:48:00 PM cchase transportation is added pricing
2018-10-31 06:48:04 PM tanea37 i enjoy it
2018-10-31 06:48:22 PM jackiem we put calendars everywhere so the aides knowwhat activity is next, yet they still don't like to help
2018-10-31 06:48:34 PM anneo I like learning about differnt care facilities!
2018-10-31 06:48:38 PM tanea37 I never wanted to be a nurse, they dont spend as much time with the residents like we do
2018-10-31 06:48:44 PM cchase odd that they do not like to help.. ours like the change
2018-10-31 06:48:53 PM noraim87 i hope we'll get better transport soon, it's really hard to plan outings
2018-10-31 06:49:02 PM jackiem are your activities assistants certified stnas?
2018-10-31 06:49:29 PM cchase they are certified direct care staff
2018-10-31 06:49:34 PM noraim87 i used to be a CNA and RNA very different from Activity Assistant
2018-10-31 06:49:45 PM tanea37 we have a big facility
2018-10-31 06:49:47 PM cchase they help with ADL's as per this certification
2018-10-31 06:49:55 PM anneo Are CNA's the same as STNA's?
2018-10-31 06:50:10 PM jackiem our head nurse wants us to become certified, but our AD thinks that they will pull us on the floor and then we won't have anybody in activites dept.
2018-10-31 06:50:29 PM tanea37 we hold 188 beds they really dont have the time to interact with the resident like they would like to
2018-10-31 06:50:59 PM jackiem i prefer not to,only because i cannot to toiletries anymore...i gag now that im older..i puked cleaning my cats litter tonight!!!
2018-10-31 06:50:59 PM cchase well - they do pull from the floor when needed for sure
2018-10-31 06:50:59 PM tanea37 what is a STNA
2018-10-31 06:51:22 PM noraim87 I am still certified to do CNA and RNA work. sometimes they'll try to pull me to work on the floor
2018-10-31 06:51:23 PM jackiem when i was 18 it never bothered me,now i can't
2018-10-31 06:51:30 PM jackiem smells really get to me
2018-10-31 06:52:12 PM cchase State Tested Nurse Assistant Training (STNA)
2018-10-31 06:52:38 PM tanea37 i love working on the floor but CNA is a hard job and at 37 i see that it is hard on the body
2018-10-31 06:52:40 PM noraim87 ive never heard of STNA
2018-10-31 06:52:54 PM tanea37 I havent either
2018-10-31 06:53:09 PM molleem The smells used to but now it takes a lot to gross me out, some of the old farmers really like to test that.
2018-10-31 06:53:10 PM anneo I live and work in Louisiana - I have never heard the tearm STNA - I just assume it is our equivalent of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
2018-10-31 06:53:13 PM cchase depends on the state - In the state of Ohio, CNAs are called STNAs.
2018-10-31 06:53:28 PM noraim87 im in Cali
2018-10-31 06:53:40 PM jackiem well,we have both Cnas and stnas
2018-10-31 06:54:03 PM tanea37 ok
2018-10-31 06:54:07 PM jackiem cnas work on assisted living side stnas can do both health care and assisted living
2018-10-31 06:54:24 PM jackiem ohio
2018-10-31 06:55:01 PM molleem left the chat room
2018-10-31 06:55:11 PM tanea37 In Florida a CNA is the same no matter what setting you are in
2018-10-31 06:55:24 PM jackiem interesting
2018-10-31 06:55:31 PM cchase a state tested nurse assistant is also a state tested certified nurse assistant (CNA) symantics
2018-10-31 06:55:45 PM jackiem wild
2018-10-31 06:55:57 PM anneo cchase - I'm learning a lot of NEW things :) Thank you!
2018-10-31 06:56:13 PM tanea37 assistant living, long-term, and memory care have the same requirements as a CNA
2018-10-31 06:56:31 PM jackiem why then are our cnas only able to work onassisted livng side then?
2018-10-31 06:56:32 PM cchase here's the scope from google:STNAs, CNAs, and MoreActually, the only major difference between STNAs and CNAs – as well as LNAs, NAs, and other nursing assistants – is the title that their respective states use.
2018-10-31 06:56:33 PM arutgers78 We are short in Cna and our beautiful nurses ignore the call light
2018-10-31 06:56:33 PM molleem enter the chat room
2018-10-31 06:56:56 PM arutgers78 I am cna and activity director and they do pull to work on the floor for sure
2018-10-31 06:57:07 PM cchase hello molleem
2018-10-31 06:57:27 PM arutgers78 welcome Mollie
2018-10-31 06:57:28 PM tanea37 ok
2018-10-31 06:57:31 PM molleem I'm back. Tech can be annoying
2018-10-31 06:57:35 PM jackiem yeah im not interested in doing stna or cna stuff...mostly because of my upchuck reflex
2018-10-31 06:57:38 PM tanea37 im learning a lot tonight as well
2018-10-31 06:57:39 PM cchase (Tp)
2018-10-31 06:57:45 PM cchase that's tech
2018-10-31 06:57:54 PM cchase (lol)
2018-10-31 06:57:54 PM arutgers78 me too but I don't have a choice
2018-10-31 06:58:02 PM arutgers78 i need my job and pay
2018-10-31 06:58:16 PM jackiem if they make it mandatory i might have to go back to kitchen work
2018-10-31 06:58:27 PM cchase the role reversal is catching on in many places
2018-10-31 06:58:45 PM tanea37 in our building certain departments have to be CNA certified
2018-10-31 06:58:53 PM jackiem i feel it coming...but i will hang on until that happens
2018-10-31 06:58:54 PM cchase it becomes a cost thing but certification and qualifications tops the cost savings
2018-10-31 06:58:59 PM noraim87 learned alot, thank you
2018-10-31 06:59:28 PM molleem I don't mind it, it just gets tricky to balance time spent doing personal care with time doing activities.
2018-10-31 06:59:36 PM jackiem i love my job i hope i don't have to choose
2018-10-31 06:59:41 PM cchase regulators won't appreciated untrained staff delivering services...
2018-10-31 06:59:51 PM arutgers78 the advantage to be a cna is we can transfer and help our residents more
