2019-08-21 06:26:34 PM ruthiesister two you should see if your people can make decoration for one of the floats,
2019-08-21 06:26:38 PM amberwilson MOSTLY BECAUSE I ONLY HAVE 1 TO 2 PATIENTS AT A TIME RIGHT NOW. I AM PRETTY SURE THAT WILL CHANGE IN THE WINTER MONTHS SO I WILL BE ABLE TO COME UP WITH GROUP ACTIVITIES
2019-08-21 06:27:10 PM jcox I have 40 beds in my unit and a waiting list
2019-08-21 06:27:18 PM ruthiesister i did the golf with 4 patients ,, thing of something they both can do
2019-08-21 06:27:30 PM ruthiesister think
2019-08-21 06:27:52 PM ruthiesister how many of you have a garden that grow veggie for the patients
2019-08-21 06:28:28 PM amberwilson WE ARE A 25 BED FACILITY AND OUR SWING BED PATIENT COUNT IS LOW RIGHT NOW, I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE PATIENTS AT ONCE (NOT THAT I WANT ANYONE TO BE SICK, LOL)
2019-08-21 06:28:29 PM twolcott We did something fun last week that really was a great memory and also sensory activity. We called it Watermelon Blast! I sliced up fresh watermelons and served them to several of the residents. Put a smile on their face and brought up some good conversation about their eating watermelon as a kid.
2019-08-21 06:28:55 PM kimranck We planted vegtables in our raised garden. We have tomatatos and peppers on the plants. The residents helped to plant and they help me water them.
2019-08-21 06:29:04 PM ruthiesister you can do a small things ,, i have had 1 patient and i have 10 right now
2019-08-21 06:29:43 PM ruthiesister i have a veggie and a flower garden ,,
2019-08-21 06:30:04 PM jcox we have planted flowers and made hummingbird food
2019-08-21 06:30:40 PM ruthiesister we go outside ,and pick and prep everything ourselves ,to eat a small little salad , and they love that
2019-08-21 06:30:55 PM kimranck What kind of budget do you have when you have such a small number? I guess it is hard to schedule events such as entertainers?
2019-08-21 06:30:58 PM amberwilson I DID HAVE A PATIENT SUGGEST HUMKINGBIRD FEEDERS THAT WE HANG OUTSIDE OF ALL THE PATIENT ROOMS
2019-08-21 06:30:59 PM ruthiesister and if i don't have those that can go outside i do it myself and bring it to them
2019-08-21 06:31:24 PM twolcott about 3 residents could really identify and speak about watermelon. A few others who don't speak were able to use their sense of taste and smell to show that they did remember at least what watermelon tasted like. Very low cost and not a lot of preparation.
2019-08-21 06:31:34 PM ruthiesister that gets tough because then it become something you have to do all the time and it can be hard
2019-08-21 06:32:05 PM ruthiesister put two in the garden , and they can do that
2019-08-21 06:32:21 PM amberwilson THATS A GREAT IDEA

2019-08-21 06:36:06 PM kimranck Oh, we have talked about wear they grew up and brought it up on google earth to see their houses. It was really nice.

2019-08-21 06:37:49 PM kimranck We have started a new activity called Resident Spotlight. Each month a different resident is in the spotlight and they tell us where they grew up, or what they did for a career, hobby, travels, we learn alot about that resident. Everyone has been enjoying this activity.
2019-08-21 06:37:53 PM amberwilson I AGREE WITH JCOX, HOW DO YOU NOT BREAK HIPPA?
2019-08-21 06:38:39 PM ruthiesister they told me once and it's in my book ,, that two guys that grow up in town where part of the gang at the ok corral that killed the earp
2019-08-21 06:39:21 PM amberwilson left the chat room
2019-08-21 06:39:28 PM ruthiesister your not , braking hippa , your talking about your community , and if your worry you can have them sigh a waiver

2019-08-21 06:41:21 PM ruthiesister there is a ton of thing you can put in that history book that doesn't have to be about them ,, just things they did in there life

2019-08-21 06:45:03 PM twolcott we have a american sign museum in our downtown area and i took a group of residents to go on a tour, and it was a great way to bring up memories from their times and the signs that represented their era.
2019-08-21 06:45:44 PM ruthiesister see i'm telling you the history book does wonders for me ,, i can open up any page with a small group and start talking about something on that page and it starts a hole group talking

2019-08-21 06:50:48 PM kimranck It doenst matter how many residents you have there is still an acitivity that can be done.
2019-08-21 06:51:17 PM amberwilson IT DOESN'T MATTER THE NUMBER, THAT ALL ACTIVITIES ARE POSSIBLE.

2019-08-28 06:14:02 PM cchase ok - sounds like we need to learn how adult day compares to LTC
2019-08-28 06:14:11 PM cchase thanks michael
2019-08-28 06:14:42 PM cchase what do you think is the similarities or differences btw. adult day and LTC?
2019-08-28 06:15:30 PM best1 I work at a Assited Living home
2019-08-28 06:15:46 PM best1 Assited Living Nursing home
2019-08-28 06:16:12 PM cchase hey best1 (name?) you can also provide your thoughts on my question
2019-08-28 06:16:14 PM twolcott I think similarities might be that there are activities every day planned for the residents that live at the facility or come for a day or on a weekly basis and then go home
2019-08-28 06:16:49 PM juice24 im not sure but just taking a guess but my guess is adult care is day programs and LTC they lve there
2019-08-28 06:16:53 PM cchase a good answerTracy
2019-08-28 06:16:57 PM mnissenbaum similiarity is that both have activities planned for residents
2019-08-28 06:17:11 PM cchase yes correct jason
2019-08-28 06:17:13 PM twolcott Are you required to have care plans for the Adult day care attendees or just LTC?
2019-08-28 06:17:29 PM cchase that's a good question
2019-08-28 06:17:36 PM cchase speaking to reports and such
2019-08-28 06:17:55 PM cchase ADH does the same paperwork as a long term care facility
2019-08-28 06:18:08 PM twolcott Wasn't sure if that might be a difference?
2019-08-28 06:18:20 PM twolcott but seems from your response that it is a similarity
2019-08-28 06:18:26 PM cchase all - care plans, progress notes. participation records , nursing notes (if medical ADH)
2019-08-28 06:18:51 PM cchase there are generally two types of centers
2019-08-28 06:19:12 PM cchase one is more social in nature more on the model of a senior center
2019-08-28 06:19:44 PM cchase the other is a medical model with nursing, social workers, physical therapy, etc
2019-08-28 06:20:26 PM cchase social models do not have to abide by the more stringent regs. that the medical model
2019-08-28 06:20:37 PM twolcott I am not that familiar with the Adult day care centers. Good to know the types that are offered.
2019-08-28 06:21:12 PM juice24 do most adult day care work with people with DD
2019-08-28 06:21:14 PM juice24 ?
2019-08-28 06:21:15 PM cchase now a days - some day centers have become specialized such as an Alzheimer's
2019-08-28 06:21:20 PM mnissenbaum both are care plans, right?
2019-08-28 06:21:30 PM juice24 nevermind lol
2019-08-28 06:21:50 PM cchase yes care plans, family meetings
2019-08-28 06:22:28 PM twolcott Do any of the centers provide respite stay?
2019-08-28 06:22:36 PM cchase the ADH participant (we call them) arrives early morning then leaves the end of the day
2019-08-28 06:22:56 PM cchase this is considered predictable respite
2019-08-28 06:23:47 PM twolcott Does medicaid or medicare cover any of the costs?
2019-08-28 06:24:08 PM cchase a respite care can be arranged but admission and history intake must take place first
2019-08-28 06:24:43 PM cchase yes - medicaid (our state) does cover and some long term insurance plans as well
2019-08-28 06:25:00 PM best1 MY other job BRC provides respite care
2019-08-28 06:25:37 PM cchase our participants go through an very comprehensive assessment prior to admission
2019-08-28 06:26:12 PM cchase thus, respite meaning - dropping in from time to time is a little tricky
2019-08-28 06:26:42 PM twolcott I am assuming you have certain requirements for the participants to be qualify for attending the facility?
2019-08-28 06:26:47 PM cchase some families drive their loved one to the center and we pick up as well
2019-08-28 06:27:43 PM cchase My center is a medical model and I have Registered nursing onboard so we can care for most cases
2019-08-28 06:28:10 PM cchase a social model may be more restricted when it comes to that
2019-08-28 06:28:27 PM best1 We have families that bring there relatives for weekends and some for a week for respite care services. at my second job BRC
2019-08-28 06:28:45 PM mnissenbaum LTC cover the costs of that care such as Alzheimer. and ADS is a Service that is provided for a full day. Respice can take place anywhere?
2019-08-28 06:28:55 PM cchase I have only refused two admissions in a five year period of doing admission
2019-08-28 06:29:17 PM juice24 how many residents do you have?
2019-08-28 06:29:19 PM cchase do your respite care services offer overnight?
2019-08-28 06:30:02 PM mnissenbaum yes
2019-08-28 06:30:07 PM buddyrmorvent When more comprehensive care is required to you help educate families on options available? And are you able to taylor it for the person given you are familiar with them?
2019-08-28 06:30:19 PM best1 Yes ours offer overnight services
2019-08-28 06:30:25 PM cchase average daily attendance is btw 45 to 50
2019-08-28 06:30:53 PM buddyrmorvent Wow. Is this considered average?
2019-08-28 06:31:18 PM cchase yes correcy buddy...generally families start to look for alternate care when they cannot keep their loved one safe at night
2019-08-28 06:31:35 PM best1 wow.....
2019-08-28 06:31:44 PM cchase adult day health is not and cannot be liscensed for overnight stays
2019-08-28 06:32:51 PM cchase it is average for a small to medium size center. some come only three days/wk others come 6 days/wk
2019-08-28 06:32:56 PM mnissenbaum Can a family member do respite care?
2019-08-28 06:33:18 PM cchase it is a mix of attendance thus why the average is in that range
2019-08-28 06:34:09 PM cchase not sure about your question- certainly a family member can care for his/her loved one
2019-08-28 06:34:45 PM twolcott I will have to search in our area, Cincinnati. I really haven't heard much about adult day care centers. It seems as if most of it is LTC and independent living with the options of assisted living and then skilled nursing.
2019-08-28 06:35:21 PM cchase these centers are growing
2019-08-28 06:35:42 PM cchase they allow seniors to remain in their homes in what we call (age in place)
2019-08-28 06:36:10 PM cchase they are also super affordable in relationship to the cost of LTC
2019-08-28 06:37:19 PM cchase I write the articles for the Consultants Help Desk - the next article will be on Wellness then there will be one on Adult Day Centers
2019-08-28 06:37:26 PM juice24 thats pretty dope. we have to deal with alot of people that dont wanna give up their homes they worked so many years for
2019-08-28 06:37:30 PM twolcott I would imagine they would be less expensive. Do you have much turnover with staff?
2019-08-28 06:37:47 PM cchase take the time to read that educational information if you can manage
2019-08-28 06:37:59 PM mnissenbaum ok
2019-08-28 06:38:28 PM twolcott YOur article sounds very interesting. I will look for it to read
2019-08-28 06:38:29 PM juice24 will do
2019-08-28 06:38:32 PM cchase the thing is that they can attend adult day then have home services when they go home at the end of the day
2019-08-28 06:39:22 PM cchase I beleive you can sign up for the information - check our classroom for where to sign up for it
2019-08-28 06:40:30 PM cchase the activities are somewhat difference in that many of those in ADH are very able so they can do independent leisure or even lead activity programs
2019-08-28 06:41:04 PM mnissenbaum nice
2019-08-28 06:41:21 PM best1 I agree with you cchase
2019-08-28 06:41:24 PM cchase we also have a large volunteer pool
2019-08-28 06:42:04 PM twolcott That is awesome that you have a large group of volunteers to utilize.
2019-08-28 06:42:10 PM cchase many from senior centers show up to help with book club or mens club
2019-08-28 06:42:24 PM cchase knitting or sewing and craft shop
2019-08-28 06:42:43 PM mnissenbaum knitting its a great idea
2019-08-28 06:42:44 PM twolcott We are challenged in that we do have students that want to volunteer, but always need to be supervised.
2019-08-28 06:43:07 PM cchase It is a happy environment - very busy and folks like to be part of it
2019-08-28 06:43:26 PM buddyrmorvent That is great. We struggle with volunteers. I think they are not prepared for our high population of low functioning residents.
2019-08-28 06:43:41 PM cchase yes - we have students earning community service hrs. and yes they are supervised
2019-08-28 06:44:00 PM cchase I agree buddy..
2019-08-28 06:44:33 PM buddyrmorvent I can see the shock and fear when they start and rarely do they return.
2019-08-28 06:44:39 PM twolcott It does add an extra challenge in that you are assisting the resident, but also having to teach the student how to work with the resident.
2019-08-28 06:44:40 PM juice24 do you have advice on getting volunteers. ive only been here for a month and need to start trying to get some
2019-08-28 06:45:04 PM mnissenbaum me too
2019-08-28 06:45:26 PM cchase generally the student helps the activity person or cna
2019-08-28 06:45:55 PM mnissenbaum so, you go to the school and advertise or how does that work?
2019-08-28 06:46:04 PM juice24 ???
2019-08-28 06:46:09 PM twolcott We have a volunteer button on our website with an application to fill out that gets emailed to me. However, I get more volunteers by word of mouth
2019-08-28 06:46:12 PM cchase I will write an educational piece on the volunteer topic to post on my help desk
2019-08-28 06:46:42 PM twolcott That woudl be very helpful
2019-08-28 06:46:43 PM cchase I make it a point to reach out and get to know community services and the schools
2019-08-28 06:46:47 PM mnissenbaum nice, I will do that
2019-08-28 06:46:54 PM cchase so I can easily call them
2019-08-28 06:46:57 PM juice24 ok thanks!
2019-08-28 06:48:01 PM cchase adult day participants are more challenging in that they are more picky about who they share time with
2019-08-28 06:48:26 PM cchase so they are at times like school youngster
2019-08-28 06:48:54 PM twolcott Do you try to match up like interests with the volunteers and the AD participants?
2019-08-28 06:49:06 PM cchase I do not want to site next to Jodi or I want to see what Mark is doing so I do not want to sit for this activity
2019-08-28 06:49:49 PM cchase absolutely - regs require that activieis are interest based so you need to do your homework
2019-08-28 06:50:10 PM mnissenbaum (y)
2019-08-28 06:50:22 PM cchase volunteers will tell you what they offer so easy to match up to the activity
2019-08-28 06:51:24 PM cchase they are given breakfast in the morning - hot lunch and pm snack before they leave
2019-08-28 06:51:40 PM cchase meals are also dictated by ADH regs.
2019-08-28 06:51:57 PM twolcott I would think that would help tremendously and provide good quality of interaction.
2019-08-28 06:52:12 PM mnissenbaum (y)
2019-08-28 06:52:25 PM buddyrmorvent Do you have many participants with restricted diets?
2019-08-28 06:52:45 PM buddyrmorvent as far as texture is concerned...
2019-08-28 06:53:05 PM cchase the experienced volunteers are my preference as I still have newbies work with a partner (staff)
2019-08-28 06:53:29 PM cchase even experienced get a staff member to monitor
2019-08-28 06:53:43 PM cchase oh yes... all types of diets
2019-08-28 06:54:06 PM twolcott do you have a dietician on staff?
2019-08-28 06:54:07 PM cchase even those at risk for aspiration
2019-08-28 06:54:28 PM mnissenbaum well, I have to go. it was nice to chat with ya'll. its 8:55pm. hope and wish this storm go away. need to prep my stuff. good night. sorry about living early.
2019-08-28 06:54:29 PM cchase the dietician drops in evey other week
2019-08-28 06:54:50 PM cchase I am serv safe certified thus oversee the program along with nursing
2019-08-28 06:55:17 PM cchase hey Michael - time is almost up anyways - be safe out there
2019-08-28 06:55:35 PM mnissenbaum (y)thanks
2019-08-28 06:55:38 PM best1 Yes I enjoyed the chat
2019-08-28 06:55:45 PM best1 Plzzz be safe
2019-08-28 06:55:45 PM twolcott Does that person have to review their dietary requirements or make recommendations?
2019-08-28 06:55:53 PM cchase I do an Alzheimer's chat next wed.
2019-08-28 06:56:00 PM twolcott Yes, be Safe Michael.
2019-08-28 06:56:11 PM cchase would love to see you all there
2019-08-28 06:56:14 PM mnissenbaum I will, thanks
