2013-07-10 06:26:34 PM brycegray Your aides/nurses can turn a TV on or off for you. It should be in their job descriptions to assist residents, and assisting them with their tv is part of their job! Talk with your administrator. I always pay my aides off with candy/food!
2013-07-10 06:26:47 PM jamieblue What do you do when there is only one staff member and they need to leave out
2013-07-10 06:26:50 PM rvmann he feels it makes it easier to cook if the residents have something to do besides ask for special favors or drinks when he is cooking.

2013-07-10 06:34:13 PM stevemelton to get men to be more involved, what do one do that concerned itself with what kind of work they used to do? That is how we define ourselves pretty mcuh

2013-07-10 06:37:25 PM angel4aml18 if the men are puree it limits their choices but we include them if they want to join. For breakfast they can have oatmeal or scrambled eggs and for the men't coffee group they can have thickened coffee and ice cream or pudding

2013-07-10 06:37:35 PM rvmann I am trying to get the local rodeo roalty to bring in their horses for a visit and BBQ
2013-07-10 06:37:36 PM 10191961 We take our residents to the local animal shelter about once a month. They really enjoy seeing, petting and holding all the animals.

2013-07-10 06:38:32 PM lynnet Stamford Museum in Connecticut has a program called Animal Embassy - they bring animals to various communitys in and around the tri-state area
2013-07-10 06:38:43 PM sueharrington In the fall we have a car show. Its for all to come, but we do it mostly for the guys. Then we have someone dress like marilyn monroe, so they can have pictures with there favorite car and celeb.

2013-07-10 06:41:13 PM stevemelton I would think the residents today over about 80 would have an interest in WW II and Korean War. Power Points or videos and discussion. Maybe some questions they could answer
2013-07-10 06:41:20 PM lynnet since the majority of our residents lived through or served in WWII I got the FDR Fireside Chat series on CD - they love it

2013-07-10 06:41:34 PM 10191961 I also agree about the trains. Image getting a train person to come in and set up a little train show. Way cool.

2013-07-10 06:42:17 PM jamieblue I like that idea sandy55
2013-07-10 06:42:23 PM 10191961 We started a "red hat" group for the ladies at our facility, but I've been stumped about what to do with the men.
2013-07-10 06:42:34 PM brycegray I have asked staff to bring in their collections and show them off to the residents. It was something the staff member was interested in doing and the residents loved it. One staff member brought in her sons toys (legos, spaceships, etc) and the residents loved it. Called it COLLECTIBLES. It's a free activity that get's staff involved!
2013-07-10 06:42:36 PM sueharrington Some of the guys do respond well to the wwII thing
2013-07-10 06:42:36 PM stevemelton sueharrington: what brought up bad memories exactly?
2013-07-10 06:42:48 PM lynnet Sue - there will always be some with bad memories but I know that their sense of patriotism will shine thru

2013-07-10 06:43:47 PM lynnet Sue - the ones whose memories are difficult for them will not attend that particular activity and that's ok -
2013-07-10 06:43:50 PM sueharrington We do the "road show". Most of us girls in my department love antiques, so they love to see the old things we have kicking around at home

2013-07-10 06:47:19 PM stevemelton Bryce, great idea. I have taken some local history books to some men that I know lived here and they love looking at them? They would love a neighborhoodl tour and they could help lead.
2013-07-10 06:47:23 PM kamiwife47 I love the dollar store!
2013-07-10 06:47:24 PM eklemetsen I like the animal shelter thing! The ones that can, could take them out for a walk, feed and water the animals!
2013-07-10 06:47:27 PM angel4aml18 does anyone have a Telikin computer for their residents?
2013-07-10 06:47:33 PM lynnet dollar store is great

2013-07-10 06:48:06 PM sueharrington My boss does that with our residents. We call the trips mystery rides. Our residents love the trips
2013-07-10 06:48:13 PM juniorbull GARAGE SALES ARE GOOD
2013-07-10 06:48:14 PM lynnet thought I was only one who didn't know and didn't want to say anything
2013-07-10 06:48:19 PM rvmann I've been garage saling to stratch my budget Its amazing what I can get if I ask for a deal because im not keeping it.
2013-07-10 06:48:19 PM angel4aml18 it is a computer geared towards seniros where it is easier to use than a regular pc
2013-07-10 06:48:26 PM brycegray Do you have a tight activity budget? Too much of a certain craft material? Did you just receive a donation of material and don’t know what to do with it? Use this site to search for crafts by material used:http://familycrafts.about.com/od/craftsbyproduct/Crafts_by_Material_Used.htm
2013-07-10 06:48:29 PM 10191961 Our Bingo cart has lots of prizes. Most are donated by our volutneers and staff. Earrings, purses, necklaces, wallets, ball caps and such. I
2013-07-10 06:48:32 PM lynnet sounds good!
2013-07-10 06:48:53 PM angel4aml18 we are looking to get a computer and tested the Telikin out but I wanted to see if anyone actually has experience with one

2013-07-10 06:49:10 PM stevemelton Thanks, angel

2013-07-10 06:49:26 PM juniorbull WII IS GREAT FUN THE BOWLING
2013-07-10 06:49:29 PM dleonard I have 50/50 raffles which helps with my budget
2013-07-10 06:49:32 PM rvmann I can't have a resident computer till we get to the new building.... it can't happen too soon.
2013-07-10 06:49:42 PM 10191961 I have to say, my experience with the residents and computers has been frustrating. They can not maneuver the internet, and I end up doing all the work. Great one on one activity, but not so much for them.
2013-07-10 06:50:01 PM 10191961 Explain the 50/50 raffle.
2013-07-10 06:50:03 PM jamieblue Me too 10191961.
2013-07-10 06:50:14 PM lynnet we have volunteers from schools come and give the residents computer lessons
2013-07-10 06:50:15 PM tkallen same here 1019...my residents want ME to do all the work for them! LOL
2013-07-10 06:50:16 PM sueharrington I agree. Its tough to teach them
2013-07-10 06:50:28 PM rvmann it depends on the resident. We are seeing more and more that are computer literate and upset because we don't have the access.
2013-07-10 06:50:30 PM angel4aml18 that is what I am figuring it will be - more 1:1 but it will allow residents to do skype with family members who they won't get a chance to see and receive emails even if I have to read them to the resident
2013-07-10 06:50:33 PM brycegray There is Teliken (http://www.telikin.com/) and It's Never 2 Late to Learn (http://www.in2l.com/index.cfm) that are great (but expensive) computer systems for seniors/dementia
2013-07-10 06:50:40 PM lynnet the volunteers set up appointments and the residents love it
2013-07-10 06:50:43 PM sueharrington I love that idea with the kids giving lessons
2013-07-10 06:50:52 PM brycegray Show your residents fun things to do on the internet! Check out (appropriate) YouTube videos of babies laughing, animals doing funny things, even Charlie Bit My Finger (bet they haven’t seen it a 100x like we have)!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L49VXZwfup8http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J---aiyznGQhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE4FJL2IDEs&feature=c4-2U
2013-07-10 06:51:01 PM lynnet it really works sue
2013-07-10 06:51:16 PM juniorbull STORY TIME ALWAYS A GOOD TIME AS WELL as BIBLE STUDIES
2013-07-10 06:51:18 PM jamieblue I have a resident who wants to learn how to use the computer. She wants to sign up for Publishers Clearing House and check the news in Europe daily.
2013-07-10 06:51:21 PM dleonard Ticket are $1.00 I keep half and the winner of the weekly drawing gets half of the mony taken in.
2013-07-10 06:51:25 PM lynnet most of them really just want to be able to access email and news
2013-07-10 06:51:33 PM panderson62 i would love to see thier reaction to those
2013-07-10 06:51:50 PM dleonard Learning skype has been a beg hit.
2013-07-10 06:52:01 PM lynnet same here at my community
2013-07-10 06:52:04 PM 10191961 Great idea brycegray. We are asking for a laptop, projector, screen so we can show how cool the internet is in a large setting. But need the money to get it moving.
2013-07-10 06:52:09 PM krkurth We did a skype with another facility with trivia back and forth and the residents really enjoyed it!
2013-07-10 06:52:15 PM jamieblue We use pandora and youtube for parties.

2013-07-10 06:52:16 PM stevemelton I have a second cousin, living independently and doing great. I forgive the 10 emails he sends me daily.
2013-07-10 06:52:18 PM letroces4 i have 2 residents who have their own laptop so i set them up in the conference room so they can also interact with each other
2013-07-10 06:52:21 PM eklemetsen we do a Father's Day Fish Fry for the buys
2013-07-10 06:52:22 PM brycegray Other staff members love show residents what to do on the computer (try to get the dietary kids or aides to help your residents look stuff up on the computer)
2013-07-10 06:52:28 PM eklemetsen guys

2013-07-10 06:53:13 PM stevemelton The projector and screen (infocus) could be great, but expensive.

2013-07-10 06:56:15 PM brycegray Oh yeah... ask your dietician to do a free presentation on healthy meal choices or super foods (then serve a super food for the residents to try). It's another free activity!
2013-07-10 06:56:34 PM dleonard Great idea
2013-07-10 06:56:53 PM brycegray I only had one resident become upset seeing her old neighborhood, all the others have been proud to share their stories and memories of their city/community.
