2017-08-15 06:39:48 PM sjorgensen If you are talking "art" maybe you could have an "Art Exhibit" and dress up, serve wine, and have your residents' art pieces for sale. It could be in the evening and it could be special and the whole facility and their families could be involved. Fancy, huh?
2017-08-15 06:39:57 PM ginadilas schmidtke22, they should let you bring one in as long as its really clean. You might even be able to buy one cheep from walmart.

2017-08-15 06:48:24 PM melissamartin Wedo a big Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner with all the residents and there family. All of our management helps with those dinners

2017-08-15 06:48:46 PM kathyhughes Remember to keep the holidays simple
2017-08-15 06:48:53 PM nikki06 what time of the onth do you do the thansgiving andn then the christmas?
2017-08-15 06:48:53 PM ginadilas Overwelmed isnt even a good word lol, ive got knots in my stomach :)
2017-08-15 06:48:57 PM nikiawyche I had to advocate for my residents a few years ago they wanted to watch Jerry springer and everyone hated it. but the residents enjoyed it i had a cna block the channel it was a battle but needless to say I won
2017-08-15 06:48:58 PM mdh4677 Thanks i am going look in to that
2017-08-15 06:48:58 PM nikiawyche lol
2017-08-15 06:49:03 PM rcgarcia73 lol
2017-08-15 06:49:04 PM kathyhughes sometimes we are our own worse enemies
2017-08-15 06:49:07 PM jadams69 yep lots of christmas movies !!!
2017-08-15 06:49:10 PM tiwanah holidays are my favorite as well
2017-08-15 06:49:11 PM maria7293 lol
2017-08-15 06:49:18 PM yogini STATE CAN BE A SPOILER
2017-08-15 06:49:20 PM dianej A dementia specialist once told us to keep music on as much as possible. I can't tell you how many times I will put something on and then come back a few minutes later to have it changed. I work on the most advanced demenita unit and I can't get them to understand that some of the movies or news is not appropriate for them.
2017-08-15 06:49:25 PM lynmyhre I like the vibe of keeping holidays simple, but I am sensing at least one of my staff is a 'go all out' type...
2017-08-15 06:49:25 PM maria7293 for everybody
2017-08-15 06:49:28 PM slooney just have fun and remember it's for the residents!
2017-08-15 06:49:31 PM nicolespangler One of my biggest struggles is everyone in the facility keeps saying "oh the person before you did this and this" so I am feeling a lot of pressure to "live up" to that
2017-08-15 06:49:33 PM taylorweitzel97 crafts over the holidays are great too!
2017-08-15 06:49:37 PM lwright I keep extra holiday caards on hand because some residents feel bad accepting gift and not giving one back
2017-08-15 06:49:37 PM slooney we do elf on the shelf for them and they love it
2017-08-15 06:49:38 PM schmidtk22 That would be fun, diane.. to "Travel" and have a food from outside come in or a food made.. not sure if dietary would go along with it and/or if we could get outside delivered.
2017-08-15 06:49:39 PM vgreen Why do you suggest to keep holidays simple?
2017-08-15 06:49:41 PM maria7293 is truth
2017-08-15 06:49:46 PM valencia9 lynmyhre..........that's a good idea too. Decorating the living room like a certain vacation spot!!! GREAT, Great idea!!
2017-08-15 06:49:47 PM schmidtk22 my old facility i worked at used to have a salad bar and a pizza bar.
2017-08-15 06:49:50 PM schmidtk22 pizza party
2017-08-15 06:49:54 PM schmidtk22 every month. they loved it.
2017-08-15 06:49:59 PM sjorgensen The CNA's put in movies that THEY like to watch instead of taking into consideration what's best for the residents!
2017-08-15 06:50:03 PM melissamartin We do our dinners the week before the actual holiday
2017-08-15 06:50:20 PM jcking we dinners before holidays also
2017-08-15 06:50:23 PM maria7293 my facilty always wit buffet every holiday!!!
2017-08-15 06:50:29 PM dianej nicole. I get that a lot too especially since the person before me could sing and play the piano beautifully. I am finally learning how to make my own mark
2017-08-15 06:50:29 PM schmidtk22 yeah im with jcking.. i can only focus on one activity at a time.
2017-08-15 06:50:43 PM kathyhughes Because we think that we have to have over the top activities for the holidays....but the residents are more used to simple and uncomplicated programs
2017-08-15 06:50:43 PM taylorweitzel97 yeah sjorgensen- my facility had that same problem and i put my foot down real quick on that and made sure they undeerstood raunchy comedies arent of interest to these residents
2017-08-15 06:50:44 PM schmidtk22 i get overwhelemed when i walk into walmart or somehwere and halloween is not for another 3 months and they already have candy out.
2017-08-15 06:50:51 PM constanceg Residents are adults and it is their home! They should be able to watch whatever they want as long as it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others - not too loud, does not monopolize the public tv, etc....
2017-08-15 06:50:52 PM cynkarnes76 dianej Well, I did in the past have an issue with the sound and had to take a remote out of a CNAs hand (to advocate for my resident that could not hear). I did it directly and tactfully.
2017-08-15 06:50:57 PM rcgarcia73 good point KAthy
2017-08-15 06:50:59 PM lynmyhre Holidays are very emotional...if its overdone, it can be overwhelming and cause residents to miss family, miss the past, feel disconnected when our intent was to make them feel connected.
2017-08-15 06:51:01 PM maria7293 is truth kathy!!!
2017-08-15 06:51:05 PM yogini STATE IS NOW ASKING FOR FIRE RATED MATERIALS FOR ARTS AND CRAFTS
2017-08-15 06:51:05 PM ginadilas You are right KAthy !
2017-08-15 06:51:14 PM nicolespangler exactly Kathy!
2017-08-15 06:51:15 PM taylorweitzel97 yeah i agree with the simplicity. just enough for them to feel special!
2017-08-15 06:51:32 PM nikki06 yogini what does that even mean??
2017-08-15 06:51:41 PM mdh4677 your are right Kathy
2017-08-15 06:51:56 PM jadams69 so true kathy.. my residnets just enjoy seeing all of us laughing , decorating and being in the christmas spirit...
2017-08-15 06:51:59 PM kathyhughes Like....for example....we go nuts getting gifts for everyone when the families should be getting the gifts and we should only worry about the people who do not have families
2017-08-15 06:52:00 PM constanceg Thank you, slooney, for the reminder of Elf on the shelf!!
2017-08-15 06:52:02 PM valencia9 slooney.....tell me about the elf on the shelf???
2017-08-15 06:52:06 PM rcgarcia73 fire rated material for arts and crafts?
2017-08-15 06:52:06 PM yogini ONE HOUR FIRE RATED, NOT CLASS ONE
2017-08-15 06:52:07 PM nikiawyche for december I do prize bingo where the items are wrapped and the residents pick from the table
2017-08-15 06:52:16 PM nicolespangler air enough Kathy
2017-08-15 06:52:19 PM sjorgensen We do family night and the resident Christmas Party a couple of weeks before Christmas...that way, families can spend Christmas with their "own" families on the actual holiday.
2017-08-15 06:52:20 PM nicolespangler *fair
2017-08-15 06:52:21 PM slooney His name is Shenanigans, and I move him in our pub everyday
2017-08-15 06:52:25 PM nikiawyche Cookies with Santa and I give out gifts from the staff
2017-08-15 06:52:28 PM virginia because they can be to ioverwhelming for some people attimes
2017-08-15 06:52:41 PM slooney the residents look for him and chuckle... and visitors, especially the kiddos love it
2017-08-15 06:52:46 PM vgreen I had the best Christmas event last year, planned by the residents. No Party, they wanted and enjoyed an elegent dinner with live soft music. They talked about it for a month!
2017-08-15 06:52:47 PM lwright We also do an angel tree
2017-08-15 06:52:50 PM schmidtk22 yeah and some of my snf side say that the al is "snooty" and they're "too good for" to intermingle..
2017-08-15 06:53:25 PM taylorweitzel97 we do a scenic drive and go look at the falling leaves in fall time, the halloween decorations in october, and christmas lights in december!
2017-08-15 06:53:27 PM valencia9 nicolespangler.....you will run yourself ragged by doing what the previous person did. Find what worked and what didn't and then swing with your ideas (prepare yourself enough time to organize it).
2017-08-15 06:53:36 PM taylorweitzel97 they love looking at christmas lights
2017-08-15 06:53:40 PM lynmyhre I like the idea of letting the residents direct the 'holiday vibe'...vgreen. I think that's the surest way to make t hem feel special.
2017-08-15 06:53:47 PM sjorgensen If you get the residents involved with decorating for the holidays, you can turn the whole month into an activity...arts & crafts, fine motor skills, gross motor skills...you get the idea!
2017-08-15 06:53:51 PM maria7293 yes they do!!!
2017-08-15 06:53:54 PM tiwanah we also do angle tree
2017-08-15 06:53:55 PM mdh4677 I would like to have my staff invovlde with the resident
2017-08-15 06:54:03 PM maria7293 is good idea
2017-08-15 06:54:09 PM dianej I am excited. This year we have tried something new. Every three months we do a store. WE have many beautiful donated clothes as well as nic nacs books, snacks, jewelry, so all. We let the residents come in and shop and everything is free. It has been a huge hit. We have decided to add a Christmas store where the residents can shop for their loved ones. We will gift wrap and so on. I am so looking forward to it.
2017-08-15 06:54:19 PM nicolespangler I am trying to focus on that stuff now, for getting ready for holidays
2017-08-15 06:54:33 PM slooney diane, that's amazing! i love it1
2017-08-15 06:54:33 PM maria7293 LOL!!!
2017-08-15 06:54:37 PM lynmyhre I like the store idea.
2017-08-15 06:54:52 PM schmidtk22 ginadilas--thats how it seems here.. i try to fun thingsa nd people think im weird for trying them out.. like any craft related thing, or doing something like an outing they would like..
2017-08-15 06:54:57 PM taylorweitzel97 Diane thats such a fun thing! we do that one a month and our residents adore the store! instead of bingo prizes they get points and then they can spend their points at the store
2017-08-15 06:55:02 PM maria7293 YES Me too
2017-08-15 06:55:03 PM dianej I mean...who doesn't like to shop. Lol
2017-08-15 06:55:12 PM vgreen Our nursing and CNA staff are not involved with most american traditions, not involved with our holiday themes, makes it hard to get help.
2017-08-15 06:55:21 PM taylorweitzel97 encourages them to come down and participate in more games too
2017-08-15 06:55:51 PM mdh4677 i feel the same vgreen
2017-08-15 06:56:02 PM maria7293 I MAKE MEXICAN PARTY EVERY YEAR WIT MEXICAN FOOD THE RESIDENTS LOVE IT!!!
2017-08-15 06:56:05 PM taylorweitzel97 vgreen just do the best that you can! if they cant get into it thats okay becasue your there to bring that to them :) i have the same trouble and i just do the best I can!
2017-08-15 06:56:07 PM jcking has anyone heard of next step healthcare? we were just purchased by them/
2017-08-15 06:56:14 PM sjorgensen When we put up the Christmas tree, we start making decorations. When we get ready for the Christmas party, residents help wrap gifts and bake cookies. It becomes a community event and it's fun! Everyone feels productive...
2017-08-15 06:56:21 PM lynmyhre I'm starting to fade, guys. Need toothpicks to keep eyes open. hah. I think I am gonna turn of the PC (it's burning my legs! hah). I have learned some much, especially the Care Plan info! Thanks to everyone who shared! Talk to you guys again soon. Have a good night.

2017-08-15 06:56:34 PM yogini WE HAVE ONLY 5 HOURS AT AN ADULT DAYCARE, SO WE CANNOT DO WHAT ASSISTED LIVING AND NURSING CARE CAN DO
