2013-08-20 06:46:11 PM nansullivan To help your son, remind him that the best care he could have would be in a nursing home and for him to visit often.
2013-08-20 06:46:21 PM rvmann Nursing homes can be great for people. look at what is best for everyone and keep your son involved!

2013-08-20 06:48:46 PM rvmann being involved is one of the best gifts we can give our families... Also reminding them that everyone has a life and its ok to have your own life, but bring things from home that make his room feel like home
2013-08-20 06:48:56 PM hughesd16 Does his step-father have any family?
2013-08-20 06:48:59 PM cmzeitler Your son is doing the right thing by looking into the long term care avenue. Stay as involved as he can. Be consistant in visiting so his Dad can look forward to the visits. If he has a favorite treat suggest that he take it when he visits. I would bring my father in law pie and a "good" cup of coffee as he called it when I would visit.
2013-08-20 06:49:39 PM lwolter265 KAthy, the midterm is on all the readings we have read correct? Like from the very beginning to week 8
2013-08-20 06:49:43 PM rvmann My Mother- in Law likes fresh fruit. its peaches this week.
2013-08-20 06:49:53 PM kathyhughes right Laura
2013-08-20 06:49:56 PM kpenta Kathy, for the Marketing final Practum...can I use Active Aging Week as my display, even though the event will take place right after the final?
2013-08-20 06:50:04 PM cmzeitler Anyone from Mepap 1 take the final yet?
2013-08-20 06:50:09 PM nansullivan We have one resident and her son brings her coffee ice cream every week. Very sweet.
2013-08-20 06:50:18 PM stevemelton Does not have much of his own family. A sister and daughter(who he barely knows) and they are both out of state. They have spoken to them to try to get them imvolved
2013-08-20 06:50:19 PM lwolter265 okay thank you :) just making sure before i take it haha
2013-08-20 06:50:22 PM kathyhughes that will be fine Katie

2013-08-20 06:50:31 PM kpenta OK, Thanks!
2013-08-20 06:50:51 PM kathyhughes ask the family out of state to send him a card once a week
2013-08-20 06:50:56 PM cindynick When my grandmother was in a nursing home (for 15 years) We used to bring her home for Sunday dinner or out for a drive. She was always involved with the family. Which was good for all of us!
2013-08-20 06:51:14 PM rvmann even a post card works! but a card is much better with pictures

2013-08-20 06:51:24 PM kathyhughes ask his friends to send cards

2013-08-20 06:51:42 PM kathyhughes and perhaps he can Skype them once a month
2013-08-20 06:51:52 PM nansullivan You could even send them self addressed envelopes.
2013-08-20 06:51:52 PM hughesd16 Yes, this will help lighten the load your son in feeling.
2013-08-20 06:52:16 PM kathyhughes I always told families the more cards and notes a resident received the more visits they would get from staff and volunteers
2013-08-20 06:52:34 PM hughesd16 That is true!
2013-08-20 06:52:40 PM kpenta Great idea, very true

2013-08-20 06:52:54 PM letroces4 i thikk this is one of those where you really see that activities is not just about colors and painting and making music and all.. it really is about getting to know the person and finding ways to let them know that life still happens and it's here right now... i hope the relatives out of state will help out

Thinking of you Love Christine. I delivered it to her, she exclaimed oh I never get mail! I replied that I remembered her saying that yesterday. When she read it, she thought it was from her niece Christine (I didn't realize she had a niece with the same name) she was so happy I smiled and left without telling her it was from me :)

2013-08-20 06:55:45 PM kathyhughes That is why I found volunteers to send cards to residents without families

2013-08-22 06:01:39 PM kathyhughes when you apply through NCCAP for your ADC or ADPC
2013-08-22 06:01:51 PM horton I have so much fear about all the holidays coming up
2013-08-22 06:01:53 PM kathyhughes Once you apply they will send you information
2013-08-22 06:02:00 PM kathyhughes why?
2013-08-22 06:02:12 PM bhanson Ohh okay, so you do not have to take the test prior to sending in all of your information?
2013-08-22 06:02:42 PM horton Because its so much to do and the planning....in addition to the regular duties and we usually have our survey in November
2013-08-22 06:02:45 PM kathyhughes Nope you get information from the NCCAP office along with the pass to take the exam
2013-08-22 06:02:59 PM bhanson Okay, great. Thank you
2013-08-22 06:03:02 PM kathyhughes I had my survey during the holidays
2013-08-22 06:03:33 PM bhanson That is rough
2013-08-22 06:03:37 PM horton kathy, i am reallly have a problem getting to all of my one on ones
2013-08-22 06:03:46 PM kathyhughes I was always so happy to see them come and to see them go
2013-08-22 06:03:56 PM horton I am really worried about that
2013-08-22 06:04:03 PM frankin you in my prays hope feel a lot better noe
2013-08-22 06:04:16 PM kathyhughes Well Vanecia I would bet that you have too many people on 1-1's
2013-08-22 06:04:24 PM bhanson How about have a few smaller group activities rather than everyone doing a one-on-one?
2013-08-22 06:04:25 PM horton yes way too many
2013-08-22 06:04:48 PM kathyhughes and why do you have so many?
2013-08-22 06:05:01 PM horton They will not come out of their rooms some can'rt and others refuse
2013-08-22 06:05:02 PM kathyhughes what is the criteria?
2013-08-22 06:05:16 PM kathyhughes Okay
2013-08-22 06:05:21 PM horton I don't understand your question
2013-08-22 06:05:50 PM kathyhughes so if I refuse to come out of my room I would then be on the 1-1 list?
2013-08-22 06:05:52 PM bhanson How about having a volunteer come in and assist you with one-on-one activities?
2013-08-22 06:06:18 PM kathyhughes Even if I had my own TV watching schedule
2013-08-22 06:06:24 PM frankin left the chat room
2013-08-22 06:06:25 PM frankin enter the chat room
2013-08-22 06:06:48 PM kathyhughes would I be on your list?
2013-08-22 06:07:04 PM horton I guess maybe not
2013-08-22 06:07:26 PM kathyhughes and if my family came in everyday would I be on your list?
2013-08-22 06:07:32 PM horton No
2013-08-22 06:07:47 PM 29645 enter the chat room
2013-08-22 06:07:57 PM kathyhughes and if I don't like people I would be on your list?
2013-08-22 06:08:01 PM 29645 hello everyone
2013-08-22 06:08:10 PM kathyhughes Hello Cassie
2013-08-22 06:08:27 PM horton No... i just need to document that in my progress notes, correct
2013-08-22 06:08:31 PM kathyhughes and if I don't like groups I would be on your list?
2013-08-22 06:08:35 PM frankin yes be on my listen
2013-08-22 06:08:49 PM horton no
2013-08-22 06:08:56 PM 29645 what is the discussion about tonight
2013-08-22 06:09:38 PM kathyhughes right....you have to consider that there are people out there who do not have the social skills that we assume that they have and there are folks out there who don't want to come to activities
2013-08-22 06:10:19 PM horton therefore as long as it is documented on my progress notes am I good
2013-08-22 06:10:51 PM kathyhughes and we have to meet the needs and interests of all the residents but I think that we spend too much time thinking about people who do not have social skills and are loners
2013-08-22 06:11:30 PM kathyhughes so the loners might be very happy with an occassional visit and going to groups would be overwhelming
2013-08-22 06:11:31 PM horton What about individuals that have C-Def we have several of those...I must admit Kathy I have a fear of that
2013-08-22 06:11:48 PM kathyhughes Hand washing and hand washing
2013-08-22 06:11:56 PM horton lol
2013-08-22 06:11:59 PM kathyhughes and give them materials that only they can use
2013-08-22 06:12:12 PM 29645 we have several residents that are very much with it but refuse to participate in activities i just ckeck in on them often make sure they have everything they need and leave them alone thats what they want
2013-08-22 06:12:18 PM kathyhughes when they are done throw out the materials
2013-08-22 06:12:19 PM bhanson Yes, not every resident is a social butterfly and sometimes being over stimulated in a group can make these residents feel overwhelmed and uncomfortable.
2013-08-22 06:12:34 PM frankin thats verygood thing to do .
2013-08-22 06:13:02 PM 29645 we have a few with c dif as well im glad you ask that question lol
2013-08-22 06:13:05 PM kathyhughes I would not worry about C-Diff as long as you don't come in contact with the site they have it in
2013-08-22 06:13:07 PM horton I just want to make sure Im ok when survey time comes up....we were tagged for that last year with the last activity director
2013-08-22 06:13:30 PM kathyhughes So provide stuff that cannot be used by anyone else
2013-08-22 06:13:42 PM kathyhughes its the cost of doing business
2013-08-22 06:13:53 PM bhanson We have a few residents with C-Diff and we are sure to take the necessary precautions
2013-08-22 06:13:55 PM horton Thank you Kathy
2013-08-22 06:14:04 PM kathyhughes Hand washing
2013-08-22 06:14:19 PM frankin so ture
2013-08-22 06:14:20 PM kathyhughes and use some fancy antibacterial soaps
2013-08-22 06:14:29 PM 29645 as long as you are trying to provide them with some kind of activity that they would enjoy they should be fine right
2013-08-22 06:14:41 PM kathyhughes right
2013-08-22 06:14:51 PM kathyhughes and take credit for what you do
2013-08-22 06:15:15 PM 29645 ok yes mam i log it in the activity log book
2013-08-22 06:15:21 PM kathyhughes If I was to go into their room would I know what they like to do?
2013-08-22 06:15:50 PM 29645 yes mam i stock them up good lol
2013-08-22 06:15:58 PM bhanson Even letting a resident reminiscise and chat with you about their life stories/experiences can really be a special one-on-one that helps you bond with the resident
2013-08-22 06:16:02 PM kathyhughes Ok activity log...but what is in their room that says you were there and the activity calendar doesn't count
2013-08-22 06:16:12 PM frankin you so right. our beach party turn great residents love . something diffence.
2013-08-22 06:16:13 PM horton In some yes...but we get residents that we cant even communicate with from the very beginning....they are so sick
2013-08-22 06:16:44 PM horton what
2013-08-22 06:16:57 PM 29645 word search sheets coloring books with crayons a small cheap puzzle that can be tossed
2013-08-22 06:17:07 PM kathyhughes and what did they enjoy doing? Are there pictures of their favorite things in their room?
2013-08-22 06:17:14 PM horton ahhh
2013-08-22 06:18:00 PM 29645 when i done activity assessment they said they like to color and work puzzles and watch to
2013-08-22 06:18:07 PM kathyhughes I had an art professor who was late stage ALZ who was non responsive
2013-08-22 06:18:23 PM horton So you put art in his room
2013-08-22 06:18:45 PM kathyhughes So I hung art work in her room at her eye level and changed it one a week
2013-08-22 06:18:46 PM 29645 you can provide a scetch pad
2013-08-22 06:19:20 PM frankin good ideal
2013-08-22 06:19:25 PM 29645 oh sorry non responsive lol
2013-08-22 06:19:27 PM bhanson You could also pull up images of art on a computer or tablet to show the resident periodically
2013-08-22 06:19:32 PM kathyhughes Late Stage ALZ means that a resident is comatose and unresponsive and cannot follow directions
2013-08-22 06:20:07 PM kathyhughes I hung the picture from the Library once a week...did she know I have no idea
2013-08-22 06:20:25 PM kathyhughes so that was what she was interested in
2013-08-22 06:20:29 PM kathyhughes fine art
2013-08-22 06:20:40 PM 29645 i have hung up sun catchers in the window
2013-08-22 06:20:59 PM kathyhughes Is the resident interested in that?
2013-08-22 06:21:20 PM horton Ok Kathy we should do one-on-ones how often a week
2013-08-22 06:21:26 PM bhanson As long as you are trying to help keep them involved in some way, then I think we are doing our part. Sometimes, we may never know what type of impact we are leaving with the resident.
2013-08-22 06:21:39 PM kathyhughes right
2013-08-22 06:21:45 PM 29645 she seemed to enjoy looking at it she would have a peaceful smile on her face she looked out the window all the time
2013-08-22 06:21:58 PM kathyhughes but as we know it is what the resident is interested in
2013-08-22 06:22:10 PM kathyhughes 1-1
2013-08-22 06:22:14 PM horton yes
2013-08-22 06:22:16 PM kathyhughes s depend on the resident
2013-08-22 06:22:20 PM 29645 yes mam
