2018-04-12 06:08:47 PM olivcar We've found inservices to be incredibly effective
2018-04-12 06:08:49 PM schmidtk22 i feel like for orientation they just walk rhem around
2018-04-12 06:08:50 PM anissa44 i stuggle with that kathy
2018-04-12 06:08:50 PM jjerger im stuggling coming uo with my inserivce on quality of life bc of lack of support from admin
2018-04-12 06:08:59 PM susankent our activities do not start until 10:30 as alot of our residents have therapy first, then meds are being passed between 9 & 10 so we have to wait until then as clinical staff is not permitted to pull residents from activities.
2018-04-12 06:08:59 PM kathyhughes and then we also have to teach the Dept Heads
2018-04-12 06:09:03 PM monikadover all staff would help
2018-04-12 06:09:03 PM nancyathiel thank you all what are some of the eveing actities you all do
2018-04-12 06:09:04 PM danielles0127 I just had to hire a part timer
2018-04-12 06:09:10 PM anissa44 at our orientations all dept heads get a set time
2018-04-12 06:09:40 PM monikadover movie night, card games, and outings in the summer
2018-04-12 06:09:42 PM cassie10 orientation is very imporant I do believe
2018-04-12 06:09:43 PM thad39 we are putting together memory books in the ev3ening. We have family provide photos and news articles to put in them
2018-04-12 06:09:44 PM priscillad So informative, Kathy. I'll have to keep that in mind as well have serval more inservices
2018-04-12 06:09:44 PM suerahn Supper club they choose a restaurant and we order out
2018-04-12 06:09:48 PM anissa44 we use to have music once a month at night. nancy
2018-04-12 06:09:57 PM olivcar We usually first ask the staff what they think we do, and then go on to explain what our job entails, why we do what we do, how they are able to participate, and the benefits not only to the residents, but to the staff as well
2018-04-12 06:10:07 PM schmidtk22 thats what another facility i worked for did..each dept had their own time
2018-04-12 06:10:15 PM jadams69 I have happy hour every other friday night , we also have bingo bonanza on friday nite and poker nite for men
2018-04-12 06:10:17 PM kathyhughes And at the Dept Head meetings we should show them the activities regulations
2018-04-12 06:10:31 PM rkbaber02 We have activities in our orientation. We play BINGO and then when we get a winner... we asked them about how they felt winning and playing (most of the time they said they enjoyed it and was excited to win) We then use that as an example to how our residents feel about activities. It's a part of every day life!
2018-04-12 06:10:36 PM tonjaboyd we do bingo, church, jingo, arts & crafts
2018-04-12 06:10:41 PM rabya13 bingo pokeno word find

2018-04-12 06:10:48 PM kathyhughes Remember that we are now all over the "new" regulations
2018-04-12 06:10:50 PM susankent evening activities in my facility is movie nights as most of our residents go to bed just after supper. by 6:30 over half of residents are in bed
2018-04-12 06:10:56 PM brian yep
2018-04-12 06:11:06 PM schmidtk22 i just had a ceu bout the new regulations
2018-04-12 06:11:11 PM cassie10 susankent same here
2018-04-12 06:11:16 PM tristageisler A simple reminder at times just letting your team know that you acknowledge and appreciate their help during meetings or all staff is huge too and I think more people become aware and help when they can with activities
2018-04-12 06:11:20 PM tknox23508 they have to understand that its not just activities jobs
2018-04-12 06:11:22 PM jjerger our residents go to bed so early bc staff think they must have everyone in bed by 7p
2018-04-12 06:11:33 PM tonjaboyd so did I
2018-04-12 06:11:35 PM priscillad evening activities are midnight bingo, poker games, happy our, movie night,
2018-04-12 06:11:39 PM anissa44 our facitlity pays for cable in Every room so movie night or movie time is kind of null and void
2018-04-12 06:11:40 PM brian same here
2018-04-12 06:11:42 PM kathyhughes And when we go to those sessions we need to bring back the info
2018-04-12 06:11:43 PM brendarivest letting all staff in all departments know they are appreciated goes a long way
2018-04-12 06:11:46 PM rabya13 left the chat room
2018-04-12 06:11:49 PM anissa44 they have tons of movie channels
2018-04-12 06:11:51 PM schmidtk22 i tried to say thank you and she had a sarcastoc condensending tone back

2018-04-12 06:11:55 PM tknox23508 they are suppose to help we are a team
2018-04-12 06:11:57 PM rabya13 enter the chat room
2018-04-12 06:12:05 PM kathyhughes Also when you start to teach the activities regulations start with the activities staff
2018-04-12 06:12:10 PM tonjaboyd midnight bingo sounds fun!!
2018-04-12 06:12:27 PM olivcar Our residents LOVE Po-Ke-No! What do you play with? We started with candy but now we play with dimes
2018-04-12 06:12:32 PM schmidtk22 =wait bingop at midnight?
2018-04-12 06:12:33 PM kathyhughes The activities staff needs to know as well
2018-04-12 06:12:37 PM danielles0127 I had to get all of my staff to resign their job discription. They were not wanting to do anything
2018-04-12 06:12:40 PM brian chips
2018-04-12 06:12:50 PM brian chips donated to us

2018-04-12 06:13:27 PM jjerger im frustrated at the moment
2018-04-12 06:13:34 PM schmidtk22 we play with andy
2018-04-12 06:13:37 PM schmidtk22 candy
2018-04-12 06:13:45 PM cassie10 im frustrated too.. we cannot do any prizes its bull
2018-04-12 06:13:46 PM susankent tknox23508, yes we are a team but for some unknown reason clinical staff thinks of activities as an interruption of their day and really don't see us.
2018-04-12 06:13:47 PM kat86 we are having an inservice this month for the nursing staff on the impirtance of activites and how they can help make a positive impact in residents lives
2018-04-12 06:13:59 PM anissa44 im excited for mother's day tea party
2018-04-12 06:14:08 PM brian great idea
2018-04-12 06:14:10 PM monikadover In Germany, they don't need an activities department because we all do activities, nurses, CNAs and all the staff is involved
2018-04-12 06:14:11 PM anissa44 and nursing home week.
2018-04-12 06:14:15 PM jjerger Ive been in this positon for 6months and was a cna prior and its hard to transition
2018-04-12 06:14:18 PM jadams69 well you are there for the residents and when staff is not doing "resident centered care" its a problem...
2018-04-12 06:14:21 PM alennon Mother day tea is big
2018-04-12 06:14:24 PM tknox23508 I did an inservice with our staff on activities
2018-04-12 06:14:32 PM schmidtk22 im trying to do a mothers day tea
2018-04-12 06:14:34 PM tknox23508 It went well
2018-04-12 06:14:41 PM monikadover without the residents we would not have a job
2018-04-12 06:14:49 PM jjerger amen
2018-04-12 06:14:49 PM brendarivest exactly monika
2018-04-12 06:14:54 PM tonjaboyd we can't do any prizes so we make awards
2018-04-12 06:14:54 PM poirierheidi123 agreed
2018-04-12 06:14:55 PM thad39 We will make scones in the morning and serve them in the afternoon with tea
2018-04-12 06:14:55 PM brian we having a violinist coming in
2018-04-12 06:14:58 PM danielles0127 FACT!!!
2018-04-12 06:14:59 PM schmidtk22 this s true
2018-04-12 06:15:03 PM kathyhughes As a CNA Jessica....how did you think about activities?
2018-04-12 06:15:14 PM anissa44 i am using a cricket to make crowns and doing like who is the oldest mother. the mother with the most kids ect...
2018-04-12 06:15:35 PM anissa44 we are doing paper flower center pieces.
2018-04-12 06:15:37 PM schmidtk22 that would b neat
2018-04-12 06:15:45 PM jjerger i helped i loved the more intimate interaction with the residents I volunteered on my off time
2018-04-12 06:15:46 PM anissa44 i made paper teacup invites.
2018-04-12 06:15:55 PM kat86 we have a big mothers day tea event. The kitchen staff even dresses up in victorian costumes
2018-04-12 06:15:56 PM brendarivest awesome jjerger
2018-04-12 06:15:57 PM alennon good ideas with the crowns
2018-04-12 06:15:59 PM jjerger that why i went into activites
2018-04-12 06:16:01 PM schmidtk22 how do you do paper flower centerpieces
2018-04-12 06:16:03 PM monikadover here, as a CNA, even in training they do not teach you how important activities are to fight the daily bordom
2018-04-12 06:16:10 PM nancyathiel i am doing a mother daughter tea and i am goingto get a large variety of ice and hot teas and some finger sandwiches
2018-04-12 06:16:10 PM poirierheidi123 kat86 that's awesome
2018-04-12 06:16:19 PM danielles0127 We just did spoon flowers and used pompoms as the center of the flower
2018-04-12 06:16:24 PM anissa44 pintrest schmidtk
2018-04-12 06:16:30 PM kathyhughes So how do we teach the CNA's about activities?
2018-04-12 06:16:38 PM anissa44 it took me longer then i thought it would lol.
2018-04-12 06:16:44 PM schmidtk22 love pinterest
2018-04-12 06:16:46 PM poirierheidi123 inservice
2018-04-12 06:16:49 PM monikadover it must start when they learn to be a CNA
2018-04-12 06:16:56 PM anissa44 my cnas are really good about activities the nurses are not
2018-04-12 06:16:57 PM kat86 In my upcoming inservice, I am trying to spin it in a way to show them how activities can help THEM
2018-04-12 06:16:59 PM rabya13 inservice
2018-04-12 06:17:04 PM suerahn How does anyone communicate what activities the residents like to go to or do you think the staff knows
2018-04-12 06:17:04 PM tonjaboyd inservices
2018-04-12 06:17:07 PM kathyhughes Good idea Kat
2018-04-12 06:17:11 PM tknox23508 you have to explain to them and so them
2018-04-12 06:17:19 PM olivcar We encourage the CNA's to get involved and have events that they want to participate in
2018-04-12 06:17:25 PM jjerger i did a paper of what activities they liked but didnt help
2018-04-12 06:17:25 PM olivcar it usually involves food
2018-04-12 06:17:26 PM jackieb We could explain how it benefits them and their residents. Less falls, less wandering, less residents to watch for a little while
2018-04-12 06:17:27 PM tknox23508 I give out handouts and we do hands on
2018-04-12 06:17:36 PM monikadover I think about making an inservice so that the staff will learn what activities does for the residents
2018-04-12 06:17:37 PM rkbaber02 My CNAs are pretty awesome for the most part.
2018-04-12 06:17:39 PM danielles0127 I have explained it to the CNA's that they are basiclly teaching them step by step
2018-04-12 06:17:39 PM kat86 how it can help with behaviors and promote wellness for the residents
2018-04-12 06:17:41 PM tknox23508 especially in our memory unit
2018-04-12 06:17:41 PM schmidtk22 I wish my CNA's would actually want to help me with activities
2018-04-12 06:17:43 PM brian good idea
2018-04-12 06:17:43 PM jenniferhess2 the problem with the cna is getting them up for morning activities
2018-04-12 06:17:46 PM anissa44 i have to go up every morning and tell cnas which residents want to go. and then i ask other residents to come
2018-04-12 06:17:52 PM tknox23508 i agree
2018-04-12 06:17:56 PM olivcar that's an awesome idea Kat. I love to remind them that there's typically a decrease in falls when they are with us :)
2018-04-12 06:18:07 PM schmidtk22 YES!!! ive noticed the pm activities have more in attendance than the am
2018-04-12 06:18:08 PM jjerger I have a harder time getting them to understand not every activity isnt meant for everyone
2018-04-12 06:18:12 PM alennon yes the cna's out them to bed after lunch
2018-04-12 06:18:23 PM kathyhughes And they do not have to worry about the residents when they are in activities
2018-04-12 06:18:26 PM jenniferhess2 we have such a problem with it i know their job is hard but you have residents wanting to participate in the morning but cant because their aide dont get them up
2018-04-12 06:18:39 PM kat86 right Kathy
2018-04-12 06:18:41 PM jackieb I offer the CNAs who show interest extra hours to work our big activities like picnics and parties. When they get involved they see the positive effect on the residents
2018-04-12 06:18:41 PM schmidtk22 This is also true
2018-04-12 06:18:44 PM cassie10 agree so much kathy its frustrating!
2018-04-12 06:18:47 PM susankent i have heard here in florida that some ALF's the cna's do activties, laundry, dietary as well as their own duties so when they come to a skilled nursing facility they do appreciate the change and are more open to assisting in taking residents to activities. in regards to administration not having your back i think that's kind of the norm. however I'm not shy and to me the residents are my main priority so with the risk of alot of people really not caring to much for me I speak up and say what's wrong with the situation. even to the DCS.
2018-04-12 06:18:48 PM brian that is true
2018-04-12 06:18:50 PM jjerger are u all cna as well
2018-04-12 06:18:52 PM danielles0127 I always give my members the main activity or small group. if not i encourage them to do something they feel up to doing
2018-04-12 06:18:52 PM kathyhughes And that should be on the residents care plans
2018-04-12 06:18:52 PM monikadover it helps to keep the wanderers busy during activitie
2018-04-12 06:18:55 PM rabya13 agree kathy
2018-04-12 06:19:06 PM anissa44 my nurses insist they lay down after breakfasst and after lunch those are my two times for activities.
2018-04-12 06:19:13 PM rabya13 yes helpwith the wanders
2018-04-12 06:19:15 PM priscillad inform the nursing staff of residents likes and which groups they enjoy to see that the resident is up that dat
2018-04-12 06:19:18 PM danielles0127 I was a Program Assistant. its the same work less pay lol
2018-04-12 06:19:18 PM tonjaboyd So do I, It's like they do not like activities at all
2018-04-12 06:19:20 PM priscillad day
2018-04-12 06:19:23 PM nancyathiel our nursing staff thinks activties are lazy untill they have a resdent they dont want around them thens its send them to actitives they can baby sit this angers our resdents dont need a baby sitter the need love and understanding
2018-04-12 06:19:34 PM anissa44 we just got a new DON so im am thinking there will be some changes.
2018-04-12 06:19:37 PM suerahn I developed an attendance sheet that highlights all the activities that everyone enjoys doing. I copy it for the staff so they are aware. I also give them a list of who likes to go to church services and meals in the main DR
2018-04-12 06:19:52 PM rkbaber02 I give my CNAs a list in the morning of resident interested in morning and afternoon activities.
2018-04-12 06:19:55 PM schmidtk22 I'm trying to take my residents out on a field trip, but we don't have enough staffing right now to do that (I have to take an aide with me)
2018-04-12 06:20:03 PM jadams69 We have a Fall Focus Group. All residents are on a get up list daily
2018-04-12 06:20:08 PM tknox23508 we give them the calendar
2018-04-12 06:20:09 PM kathyhughes You should use the care plans for residents that want to go to a specific activity
2018-04-12 06:20:12 PM brian any ideas for the field trip
2018-04-12 06:20:22 PM kathyhughes and make sure that all the depts are responsible
2018-04-12 06:20:23 PM jadams69 the CNAs have to take them to us for activities
2018-04-12 06:20:24 PM tknox23508 that is true
2018-04-12 06:20:25 PM anissa44 kathy what do you mean?
2018-04-12 06:20:25 PM poirierheidi123 i find that the NAC's don't think activities is important until they need us
2018-04-12 06:20:37 PM tknox23508 i agree kathy
2018-04-12 06:20:38 PM jjerger i have added on careplans what they like and should be encourage to attend
2018-04-12 06:20:42 PM monikadover we are going to a monster truck jamb
2018-04-12 06:20:43 PM rkbaber02 My care plans have everyone's interests, needs, routine and what they prefer to be called
2018-04-12 06:20:48 PM brian nice
2018-04-12 06:20:50 PM kathyhughes If a resident wants to go to an activity and they are not up and ready that is a problem
2018-04-12 06:20:56 PM brendarivest according to a few cnas activities are just babysitting
2018-04-12 06:20:56 PM rabya13 nice monster truck jam
2018-04-12 06:21:01 PM olivcar we've gotten to the point that if we feel a resident has been placed in an activity that they are not enjoying, we call the charge nurse and ask them to remove the resident since they aren't enjoying it, asking to leave, etc. It's been effective bc the charge nurse typically doesn't want to worry about that
2018-04-12 06:21:12 PM kathyhughes It has to be discussed at care plan meeting
2018-04-12 06:21:18 PM jenniferhess2 my care plans have what they like attending
2018-04-12 06:21:24 PM rabya13 so untrue activities are the best
2018-04-12 06:21:30 PM danielles0127 Does anyone do morning meetings?
2018-04-12 06:21:30 PM jjerger i agree
2018-04-12 06:21:33 PM susankent when the residents aren't up in the morning I go with who I have and make mention to the DCS to rectify the situation. my statement is"I know that you want residents down for activities but recently I have found that my residents are still in bed at the start of my morning activity"
2018-04-12 06:21:36 PM tonjaboyd We can't take our residents out
2018-04-12 06:21:42 PM jenniferhess2 we have morning meetings every day
2018-04-12 06:21:43 PM jjerger i do morning meeting as idt team
2018-04-12 06:21:47 PM suerahn Yes on morning meeting
2018-04-12 06:21:48 PM anissa44 i note it in my 3 months note but no one seems to pay attention.
2018-04-12 06:21:49 PM brian I start next week, morning meetings
2018-04-12 06:21:52 PM kathyhughes and what the other depts are doing to assist the residents with attending what they want to
2018-04-12 06:21:52 PM alennon yes
2018-04-12 06:21:55 PM jadams69 we do too jennifer hess
2018-04-12 06:21:57 PM thad39 Morning meeting on week day at 9:30AM
2018-04-12 06:21:59 PM rabya13 yes every day is a morning meeting
2018-04-12 06:22:04 PM brendarivest the department heads have a meeting in the mornings
2018-04-12 06:22:16 PM poirierheidi123 morning managers meeting (stand up)
2018-04-12 06:22:17 PM monikadover one of my resident's chair was not charged and that raised a stinc because the resident could not go to an activity
2018-04-12 06:22:24 PM jadams69 our therapist have alot of our people up every day and bring them down for morning exercise class
2018-04-12 06:22:28 PM tonjaboyd stand up morning meetings are goog.
2018-04-12 06:22:29 PM kathyhughes And at the morning meetings what do you report??? My guess is all you do is tell them the activities for the day
2018-04-12 06:22:35 PM monikadover we had an inservice for that
2018-04-12 06:22:37 PM rkbaber02 I like to do travleing carts early like 9:00am and then I can also assess who needs to get up for the 10:30 morning activity.
