2014-08-19 06:17:24 PM tbender what all is included in a bazaar?
2014-08-19 06:17:45 PM kathyhughes I think that they would love that SaraH
2014-08-19 06:17:46 PM debbielee we have more that quit eating so anything that encourges them to eat is a good thing
2014-08-19 06:17:46 PM carola Hmm, gaining weight has been serious for a few of our residents. The hard part is the ones who need to gain in the same group. You limit for some and they can get hurt feelings.
2014-08-19 06:17:47 PM 241130 The clay could be a sensory benefit
2014-08-19 06:17:48 PM jean1 I would say to try the clay activity and see how it goes.
2014-08-19 06:17:53 PM nacresia35 my residents made their own cake and decorated it and got to keep it
2014-08-19 06:17:54 PM emoeckly Hello everyone. Sorry I am a little late. One note on the chilli cookoff and strict diets, we had a grill off and did turkey legs. We used a thermometer to make sure temp was up to code
2014-08-19 06:18:04 PM meganisabel How does everyone have time for these events? We get about 45 mins in the morning for activites and an hour in the afternoon.. doesnt seem like enough time for anything.. its frustrating!
2014-08-19 06:18:13 PM kathyhughes You can do all sorts of crafts, plants and cards
2014-08-19 06:18:34 PM lisao I think clay is great sensory activity - one of my folks has some sensory issues - he made a ball - but then we talked about it and he said it was "his world" it oped us up for lots of meaningful discussion like what he would want on his world and so on
2014-08-19 06:18:35 PM 241130 Wow- we do programming for 6 hours throughout the day
2014-08-19 06:18:43 PM tracyl Bazaar- food, games, raffles
2014-08-19 06:18:44 PM 241130 Megan- what kind of facility do you work at again?
2014-08-19 06:18:45 PM carola We plan for full days.
2014-08-19 06:18:50 PM kathyhughes Its all about planning ahead
2014-08-19 06:18:53 PM 241130 7 days a week
2014-08-19 06:18:57 PM valerieh Crafts are challenging for me I dont want them to be childish
2014-08-19 06:19:03 PM kleson03 yes
2014-08-19 06:19:07 PM meganisabel Nursing home and rehab center.
2014-08-19 06:19:09 PM kathyhughes and keeping it simple
2014-08-19 06:19:12 PM debbielee meganisabel we have to do all the planning in advance and make sure everything is set up and ready ahead of time.
2014-08-19 06:19:14 PM tbender we plan 4 1/2 hr days 7 days a week
2014-08-19 06:19:15 PM carola We even have activities for weekends that are either staff or volunteer run.
2014-08-19 06:19:22 PM loriw Its taking some getting used to..... planning ahead. I'm new in my job.
2014-08-19 06:19:24 PM shullseniorliving i have been meeting with some of my aides. they are wanting to do a picnic
2014-08-19 06:19:27 PM kathyhughes and perhaps including residents in preparing for the activity
2014-08-19 06:19:35 PM 241130 We plan monthly and that always helps. Have everything prepared and ready to go before it happens.
2014-08-19 06:19:37 PM emoeckly You can also do many activities like sensory stimulation. Do crafts but add a scent for Aroma therapy, add something they can eat for taste, turn on music in the back ground for music therapy and to hit the hearing sense and have them work on a craft to get you touch sense
2014-08-19 06:19:37 PM tracyl we have 3 programs in the morning on the long term side that run from a 1/2hour to 45mins then several more programs that run until 8pm at night
2014-08-19 06:19:39 PM sarahe Yeah for the clay! I thought it would be cool too. I told her there's never any harm in trying something new!(F)
2014-08-19 06:19:56 PM carriesl use your volunteers
2014-08-19 06:19:58 PM tracyl does anyone have a sensory room?
2014-08-19 06:20:08 PM kathyhughes I had the residents make their own food for Happy Hour....they would make the food in the AM for the Happy Hour in the afternoon
2014-08-19 06:20:08 PM loriw I don't but would love one

2014-08-19 06:20:17 PM debbielee I would love a sensory room
2014-08-19 06:20:18 PM kathyhughes and they appreciated it better
2014-08-19 06:20:22 PM tbender @carola have you faced any challenges with volunteers running the weekends?
2014-08-19 06:20:34 PM 241130 At previous jobs i've had them but not current. They are a fantastic bonus
2014-08-19 06:20:36 PM nacresia35 hello kathy what is our topic about chili or diets
2014-08-19 06:20:51 PM tracyl i am working on creating a sensory room however my room is so small and most of the residents that would use it have huge recliing chairs
2014-08-19 06:20:56 PM mariak we have a sensory room for our non-ambulatory patients
2014-08-19 06:20:58 PM kathyhughes about activities all sorts Nacresia for fall

2014-08-19 06:21:03 PM jean1 Our kitchen klub group makes desserts for our afternoon social time. It works out great for those who love to cook and those who love to eat :)
2014-08-19 06:21:09 PM carola Usually for the first time or two my director schedules them for the Saturday she works so she can observe how things go.
2014-08-19 06:21:13 PM tracyl what kind of stuff do you have in your sensory room?
2014-08-19 06:21:15 PM debbielee my volunteers will be gone Friday when school starts. they will be missed
2014-08-19 06:21:19 PM lisao I have a traveling sensory room
2014-08-19 06:21:27 PM 241130 How so Lisa?
2014-08-19 06:21:39 PM tracyl tell me about your traveling sensory room, sounds interesting!!
2014-08-19 06:21:41 PM debbielee traveling sensory room?
2014-08-19 06:21:45 PM carola If they are really good she will trust them later.
2014-08-19 06:21:48 PM valerieh Any Ideals for getting volunteers
2014-08-19 06:21:56 PM loriw How do you encourage the resident driven activities when you aren't there?
2014-08-19 06:22:07 PM emoeckly In my experience, sensory rooms are kind of hard. If the room is not a place that people spend most of their time, when they are having a sad or angry moment, they dont want to go anywhere near a strange room. I have made the living area into a sensory room. I brought the sensory room to whoever needs it where ever they are.
2014-08-19 06:22:16 PM carriesl Free adds, and use the senior center
2014-08-19 06:22:34 PM nijah Valerieh You need to go to the churches in your communty
2014-08-19 06:22:59 PM 241130 We have highschool students who come, churches and our marketing deparment puts out ads. Word of mouth is always a big helper too.
2014-08-19 06:23:07 PM shullseniorliving i sent a letter to the churches. and a news letter to famlies i send a little note asking for help also.
2014-08-19 06:23:13 PM emoeckly You have to establish the activity and get it going to the point they are comfortable with it before they will run it without an activity person. I have also worked places that residents wouldn't run anything
2014-08-19 06:23:18 PM jean1 Family members make up the bulk of our volunteer staff. Church members play a big role, also.
2014-08-19 06:23:18 PM carola We get volunteers from the Catholic schools. For pet therapy try contacting your local dog training club.
2014-08-19 06:23:19 PM nijah Also any clubs or businesses
2014-08-19 06:23:26 PM lisao have all the sensory items - in an area - and then decide on a theme for sensory - then carry all the stuff I need - many of the folks I work with are at Day training so I go into different areas with the stuff - turn off the lights turn on projectors or what ever - and do it to it - One area teased me that I was turning their room into an opium de,

2014-08-19 06:24:19 PM shullseniorliving left the chat room
2014-08-19 06:24:20 PM carriesl also have everything avalable to them
2014-08-19 06:24:25 PM valerieh Thanks
2014-08-19 06:24:27 PM lisao rope lights are good because they don't get hot and you can drape them around things and make tunnels and stuff
2014-08-19 06:24:35 PM tracyl on my dementia unit we have a large room where our residents eat, then a small room attached and one small room across the hall, i would really like to make the one across the hall our sensory room because it is quieter
2014-08-19 06:24:44 PM nacresia35 ok well when i have activitys i may do arts and crafts and play music in the background so for the one that are not responsive and just sit in their wheelchair i bring them in to hear the music and see what we are doing

2014-08-19 06:26:04 PM carriesl i like that to its the smile on there face
2014-08-19 06:26:07 PM lisao when the folks in the WC don't see you behind them they seem to feel like it is more of a carnival ride
2014-08-19 06:26:17 PM tbender I like the sensory cart idea especially as a one on one tool
2014-08-19 06:26:26 PM tracyl we have a prom each year at one of our local highschools and the kifs volunteer their time they have a blast!
2014-08-19 06:26:41 PM kathyhughes I did sensory programs out of a suitcase
