2013-03-11 05:56:25 PM angi55 a few weeks
2013-03-11 05:56:32 PM dtkimble time flies when we are full time employed!

2013-03-11 05:57:01 PM karynbrinkley You can always catch up. It is hard to work full time and get everything done.
2013-03-11 05:57:11 PM dtkimble Karyn, I have an assisted living question for you.
2013-03-11 05:57:15 PM karynbrinkley Just keep plugging along.
2013-03-11 05:57:19 PM karynbrinkley Ok
2013-03-11 05:57:50 PM dtkimble Part of the criteria for one to be eligible for the ALP is to be medically stable.

2013-03-11 05:58:32 PM karynbrinkley Angie, Is there anything you are having trouble with or is it just finding the time?
2013-03-11 05:58:39 PM angi55 finding the time
2013-03-11 05:58:43 PM bhanson Hi, Karen!
2013-03-11 05:58:50 PM karynbrinkley Hi Brooke
2013-03-11 05:58:52 PM angi55 and yes some of assignments feels confusing

2013-03-11 05:59:04 PM smmbruin10 hello all =)
2013-03-11 05:59:09 PM nikibryant Hi
2013-03-11 05:59:29 PM karynbrinkley We have a Memory Care that is Assisted Living.
2013-03-11 05:59:48 PM dtkimble is it a secured unit?
2013-03-11 06:00:01 PM angi55 i dont work in a facility. if i did it might seem easier
2013-03-11 06:00:13 PM estrawser enter the chat room
2013-03-11 06:00:25 PM karynbrinkley Unless they are unable to feed themselves, need skilled nursing, or you need to use a lift, they fit our criteria for our MC unit.
2013-03-11 06:00:45 PM karynbrinkley Yes. it is a locked unit.
2013-03-11 06:00:53 PM dtkimble does the criteria differ in assisted living programs?
2013-03-11 06:01:01 PM angi55 i have never seen a locked unit in an assisted living
2013-03-11 06:01:32 PM dtkimble We are not a secured unit but some of the residents do have some form of dementia
2013-03-11 06:01:35 PM aprilkirkland enter the chat room
2013-03-11 06:01:36 PM smmbruin10 we have a secured unit for our memory care program- advanced dementia
2013-03-11 06:01:39 PM karynbrinkley It is the same for an Assited Living. We do have some people who need more assistance and they either have hospice or a caregiver.
2013-03-11 06:01:49 PM karynbrinkley That allows the to remain in Assited Living.
2013-03-11 06:02:00 PM smmbruin10 i work in memory care but in our AL side of the building. those with MCI or early dementia
2013-03-11 06:02:11 PM estrawser hello to all
2013-03-11 06:02:14 PM karynbrinkley Hi
2013-03-11 06:02:16 PM dtkimble functional residents with dementia
2013-03-11 06:02:22 PM karynbrinkley Yes.
2013-03-11 06:02:43 PM karynbrinkley Angie
2013-03-11 06:02:46 PM aprilkirkland hello class how is everyone
2013-03-11 06:02:52 PM bhanson Most of the residents in our Memory Care Unit have fairly progressed stages of dementia.
2013-03-11 06:02:58 PM karynbrinkley Do you need help with anything in particular?
2013-03-11 06:02:58 PM angi55 yes
2013-03-11 06:02:59 PM dtkimble I visited an adult home on Saturday. It is very interesting to see the different facilities
2013-03-11 06:03:03 PM angi55 yes what?
2013-03-11 06:03:39 PM karynbrinkley What did you think about the different facilities?
2013-03-11 06:03:41 PM angi55 i want to visit an adult daycare. never seen one, but mostly I am interested in assisted lving
2013-03-11 06:03:44 PM angi55 living/
2013-03-11 06:04:28 PM karynbrinkley How are the assignments?
2013-03-11 06:04:35 PM dtkimble I was very impressed with the home setting. Twelve residents with some very serious physical conditions..ratio of CRA's to residents 2:1
2013-03-11 06:04:45 PM angi55 i have worked in different types of facilities that all called themselves assisted livings but were all different
2013-03-11 06:04:53 PM nikibryant I love assisted its where I want to be
2013-03-11 06:05:10 PM karynbrinkley Niki, What do you love about it?
2013-03-11 06:05:36 PM dtkimble I wondered if the assisted living facilities were governed by the strict rulings as the SNF's.
2013-03-11 06:05:42 PM estrawser I was at the facility that has rehab, skilled and residental today
2013-03-11 06:05:47 PM bhanson The assignments are going well .. I feel that they are directly related to the actual work and paperwork that I complete on a regular basis so it is very helpful.
2013-03-11 06:05:52 PM karynbrinkley SNF's are a little stricter because of medicare.
2013-03-11 06:05:53 PM mayamoo3 enter the chat room
2013-03-11 06:06:11 PM nikibryant Interacting with residents their personalities you can get to know them they are mobile and can go out on trips etc.
2013-03-11 06:06:12 PM mayamoo3 hello everyone
2013-03-11 06:06:13 PM karynbrinkley Our ALF's are private pay.
2013-03-11 06:06:18 PM dtkimble but not all assisted living facilities are private pay?
2013-03-11 06:06:25 PM karynbrinkley I like that as well Niki
2013-03-11 06:06:41 PM estrawser I AM BEHIND in the assignments for this week...family death and funeral today. Hope to catch up this week
2013-03-11 06:06:48 PM karynbrinkley Then you have medicaid too
2013-03-11 06:06:57 PM nikibryant Playing games they really are competitive we played ladder ball today
2013-03-11 06:06:58 PM angi55 i worked in a really awesome facility once 100 residents. it is the best assisted living i have ever seen, but only one ad. That seems like a lot for one ad to handle.
2013-03-11 06:07:06 PM aprilkirkland I know it is a little difficult for me to get into the assignments because im not currently employed at a nursing facility and the administration where i am completing my practicum is turning over.....geesh
2013-03-11 06:07:07 PM karynbrinkley estrawser...what is your name and how can I help?
2013-03-11 06:07:10 PM smmbruin10 sorry to hear that, @estrawser
2013-03-11 06:07:12 PM dtkimble I started out in assisted living as an activities aide. It was wonderful spending the days with residents who were able to enjoy their lives
2013-03-11 06:07:50 PM karynbrinkley Are you able to visit any facilities?
2013-03-11 06:08:12 PM angi55 i wish i could find a facility that would hire an activity assistant. that would be so great
2013-03-11 06:08:17 PM karynbrinkley Oh, they are turning over. Maybe you could venture some where else.
2013-03-11 06:08:24 PM bhanson For the Written Assignent #1 this week: We were just supposed to scan and upload our Activities Assessment right?
2013-03-11 06:08:27 PM littlered14 enter the chat room
2013-03-11 06:08:34 PM karynbrinkley You could try to volunteer a coupe hours a week.
2013-03-11 06:08:38 PM karynbrinkley couple
2013-03-11 06:08:47 PM karynbrinkley Yes
2013-03-11 06:08:56 PM karynbrinkley That;s right Brooke
2013-03-11 06:09:11 PM karynbrinkley I can't hit the right keys tonight.
2013-03-11 06:09:15 PM aprilkirkland i definetly considered it but it just so happens that the AD there is planning to leave in a year so she wants to advise and train me so that i can hopefully take her place
2013-03-11 06:09:21 PM bhanson Okay, thank you! Just making sure .. It was nice to not have to write a paper for a change.
2013-03-11 06:09:32 PM karynbrinkley That is great April
2013-03-11 06:09:36 PM dtkimble I'd rather write a paper!
2013-03-11 06:09:56 PM karynbrinkley What have you guys enjoyed the most?
2013-03-11 06:09:57 PM aprilkirkland so the potential is awesome and she is super nice she just is really busy she heads a lot of other departments also
2013-03-11 06:10:02 PM angi55 The facility where I do my practicum is a nursing home. Not very active residents. I guess I am discouraged. Is it too late to switch practicum advisors?
2013-03-11 06:10:26 PM dtkimble The computer skills are difficult for me. Actually, wondering exactly what some of the assignments are
2013-03-11 06:10:34 PM karynbrinkley Angie, If you have time, call around and try to visit an assistd living. You will love it.
2013-03-11 06:10:43 PM smmbruin10 @Karyn, for the Documentation Practicum, are we to pick any TV character and study their behavior? Can I ask which character you chose?
2013-03-11 06:11:06 PM angi55 i was going to contact the assisted living i used to work in if its not too late to switch.. I loved it there
2013-03-11 06:11:09 PM karynbrinkley What do you mean that you are wondering about the assignments. Let us helpyou.
2013-03-11 06:11:11 PM bhanson I've really enjoyed the MDS information and practice because I am in charge of doing the MDS Activity Paperwork for our Skilled residents.
2013-03-11 06:11:23 PM estrawser Evelyn Strawser. I am just trying to catch up. I visited a facility to see the different types of units. There is 34 in the rehab side, 44 in the skilled. There is activities director who is the social worker. They use a WEII. I got to see the activitiy calendar. The use part of the PT room and have a activity/dining room for the residents. Interesting the different services in one building. Each section is part of halls in a double L.
2013-03-11 06:11:39 PM nikibryant I am a little overwhelmed balancing class work and kids.. taking it day by day
2013-03-11 06:11:46 PM aprilkirkland i personally would rather be at a skilled facility because i feel that is where the morale boost is mostly needed but i would love assisted because the possibiliies for the department are endless
2013-03-11 06:11:55 PM karynbrinkley Tv character....I do not know if I remember....Pick somebody you like. What do you watch?
2013-03-11 06:12:05 PM estrawser I know how it is to balancing. I am trying to double up this week.
2013-03-11 06:12:13 PM karynbrinkley I like the MDS as well, Brooke.

2013-03-11 06:12:56 PM dtkimble I love HGTV...not into dramas etc. on tv. I am not sure where to go with the fictional character assignment.

2013-03-11 06:13:09 PM karynbrinkley April, Skilled is so rewarding and can be overlooked. However, the residents in those units desperately need stimulation.
2013-03-11 06:13:09 PM bhanson You could do a cartoon character maybe
2013-03-11 06:13:21 PM smmbruin10 @Karyn, I guess I'm asking, should it be an elderly character? or can we pick any character?
2013-03-11 06:13:32 PM karynbrinkley Who did everybody else select?
2013-03-11 06:13:41 PM bhanson I haven't done it yet
2013-03-11 06:13:43 PM karynbrinkley Can be anybody?
2013-03-11 06:13:48 PM dtkimble I know someone who selected a character from MASH
2013-03-11 06:13:52 PM nikibryant I am not that far yet
2013-03-11 06:13:52 PM karynbrinkley I can be anybody.

2013-03-11 06:14:04 PM smmbruin10 ok thanks haha
2013-03-11 06:14:06 PM anniei2552 I chose Martha Stweart
2013-03-11 06:14:06 PM dtkimble another selected an actress from ER
2013-03-11 06:14:24 PM dtkimble I'd love to go with Paula Deen...pass me the budder...
2013-03-11 06:14:34 PM smmbruin10 lol that's a fun choice
2013-03-11 06:14:40 PM dtkimble she might be doomed without serious intervention!
2013-03-11 06:14:52 PM karynbrinkley I could engage Martha Stewart easily. Awesome pick!
2013-03-11 06:15:00 PM dtkimble I hear she is cranky
2013-03-11 06:15:10 PM nikibryant ellen would be a fun one
2013-03-11 06:15:16 PM dtkimble can you dance?
2013-03-11 06:15:45 PM dtkimble so, what are we to do with these characters? An MDS? "F" section?
2013-03-11 06:15:59 PM karynbrinkley Ellen would be great. See how easy that is. What else do you guys need help with?
2013-03-11 06:16:13 PM karynbrinkley We could get all your assignments done right here.
2013-03-11 06:16:21 PM dtkimble I'm on it....

2013-03-11 06:17:47 PM littlered14 I just started the class last week. Do they give instructions on when and how to do the practicum assignments or is it just do what is printed on the hours sheet? I have to say I am overwhelmed as I am literally starting from ground zero. I have never worked in a nursing home/assisted living etc. I have just been volunteering for two months. I am a former teacher/stay at home mom looking to change careers.
