2015-11-17 07:12:22 PM amandaw We have a resident that is one on one ALL the time. The aides have to chase him down constantly. He doesn't speeak english and has had a stroke so he is also confused. Well, nursing calls me EVERY day to take him for a while. I do. However, it isn,t time spent still. He never stops moving. I can't keep taking him because there are only2 of us and it's taking away from others every day. What do I do in this situation?
2015-11-17 07:12:25 PM edrar I hate to give up my one on ones, though, I dearly love them.
2015-11-17 07:12:25 PM barbz615 some of ours have been volunteering for about 20 yrs

2015-11-17 07:12:55 PM donnarinne Hello
2015-11-17 07:12:59 PM wrendillon I posted a question on the forum about non bingo game suggestions and I got a lot of great answers.
2015-11-17 07:13:08 PM tiffanyo hello everyone sorry im late
2015-11-17 07:13:09 PM abarse we have workers that are called sitters and they pay them minum wage to sit with people that are one on one at al times
2015-11-17 07:13:11 PM edrar sometimes they think activities are babysitters, we have things that we have to do too
2015-11-17 07:13:12 PM wrendillon We can all be resources for eacy other.
2015-11-17 07:13:22 PM cmadigan16 amandaw - can you give him a job? what did he used to do before he retired? or old hobbies? can he sort fishing lures or poker chips?
2015-11-17 07:13:24 PM abarse yeah at times
2015-11-17 07:13:37 PM jamiet1 I agree with the babysitting, staff call us all the time to sit with people
2015-11-17 07:13:38 PM carlosm2015 My facility just got a giving tree up and the visitors and staff are already responding.
2015-11-17 07:13:48 PM hesterj I will have to take a look at the non bingo games.
2015-11-17 07:13:49 PM donnarinne Hello
2015-11-17 07:13:50 PM kathyhughes I would first look at what he is interested in
2015-11-17 07:13:51 PM tiffanyo I feel the same too edrar
2015-11-17 07:13:54 PM abarse I have the issues they pull from my staff to do other things than activities and I get rather up set cause it takes away from our plans
2015-11-17 07:13:59 PM cynthia23 yes
2015-11-17 07:14:05 PM kathyhughes and then try to figure out what he is looking for
2015-11-17 07:14:06 PM julies we are going through a similar problem where our activity people are constintly asked to do 1:1 with a pacer which means that activities cant be done at that time
2015-11-17 07:14:11 PM sheilabryce I'll give it a try! Just can't promise, it'll make it!

2015-11-17 07:14:12 PM jamiet1 abarse, it does
2015-11-17 07:14:35 PM kathyhughes and then ......he does not have to be on 1-1 as he is interacting with staff all the time
2015-11-17 07:14:38 PM edrar I am the only activity person, i have a small place but i still have a lot to do.

2015-11-17 07:14:46 PM hesterj Are you able to talk to the staff to have them not pull activities to help.?
2015-11-17 07:14:50 PM cmadigan16 are your 1:1's high sensory or low sensory residents? that will maybe help you program for them?
2015-11-17 07:14:53 PM bhartzog I feel like the nurses in my facility feel like i'm the babysitter too when they can't control a patient.
2015-11-17 07:15:11 PM jamiet1 My struggle is providing activities for residents and I have to do 11 assessments and care plans

2015-11-17 07:15:12 PM amandaw He was a cook at a chinese restaurant. I can get him to have a bingo card and chips and "play" but if I am not right there it won't happen long. There is no communication due to his language and ours and to be honest his family that does speak his language has a very hard time communicating (due to the stroke)
2015-11-17 07:15:22 PM michelle145 we see that alot too bhartzog
2015-11-17 07:15:23 PM bhartzog Sometimes I get aggravated and say so and so activity starts at 2, i'm working on some things on the computer right now.
2015-11-17 07:15:23 PM jennc i actually told my supervisor today that i was disgusted by all the nursing staff as they watched me run around like a crazy person all day and couldn' be bothered to help at all. I even witnessed a resident having a total meltdown and the aides just sat ther eon their phones
2015-11-17 07:15:25 PM kmdemers i facility has our giving tree up its been up about 1 week and all the tags are taken very greatful to staff and familys
2015-11-17 07:15:34 PM edrar Yes me to Janet, i do the social services too
2015-11-17 07:15:34 PM maryc2 I know what you are talking I have 2or 3 residents like thay amandaw
2015-11-17 07:15:41 PM cynthia23 yoy right bhartzog
2015-11-17 07:15:45 PM abarse i get they are busy but thats why our facitly has hired people that are called sitters to just sit with them and only interain them they do not provide any personal care
2015-11-17 07:15:49 PM michelle145 I love the giving tree
2015-11-17 07:16:03 PM hesterj Nursing job description is to assist with activities.

2015-11-17 07:16:14 PM jamiet1 they don
2015-11-17 07:16:15 PM amandaw I wish we had sitters. We don't even have volunteers
2015-11-17 07:16:23 PM kimberly1 How to do the balancing act with multiple responsibilities and working as an effective leader
2015-11-17 07:16:27 PM simslashon this is my first year in activties and i was going to start putting up the christmas decorations tomorrow but i been sick and been out the last 3 days and i feel overwhelmed
2015-11-17 07:16:29 PM wrendillon When I first started, I felt like a member of the team was not understanding of what I do. She seemed to be looking down on "activities" as just keeping people busy. I attended a meeting of my local Activity Director's association. They had a Social WOrker give a talk for 1.5 CEUs about all working together in a team dispite differing job descriptions
2015-11-17 07:16:35 PM cynthia23 is annoying when our Nurses are not doing what they were suppose to do
2015-11-17 07:16:40 PM jamiet1 sorry they don't think they are to help out in our facility either
2015-11-17 07:16:42 PM abarse yeah but with they are expected to do theres no way they are able to pull away and help us for a hour
2015-11-17 07:16:47 PM barbz615 we lost so may volunteers when our facility went private
2015-11-17 07:16:57 PM donnarinne i can sometimes relate to the babysitting mind-set of other staff members who need assist w/behavioral res
2015-11-17 07:17:00 PM sandyd A few good volunteers are wonderful!
2015-11-17 07:17:01 PM hesterj When I have orientaiton with new hires. I make it very clear about helping activites as we would help them if needed.
2015-11-17 07:17:02 PM jennc it really bothers me when the aides expect me to help them with feeding and in the dining room and running around getting glasses and hearing aides, but they can't come into an activity for a few minutes or help transport people
2015-11-17 07:17:03 PM kmdemers we only have a few volunteers
2015-11-17 07:17:10 PM sheilabryce I did a turkey shoot yesterday! Used yellow and brown and one gold balloons. Tied them to balloon weights. drew turkey bandit faces on the gold one, and 5 and 10 points, The turkey gold 25 points. Have a nerf gun and have a turkey shoot! Loved it!

2015-11-17 07:17:17 PM wrendillon I went back and whenever this person tried to pull the "Activities are only games' card on me, I'd start telling her that Mr. Smith seemed calmer when he was sorting Bingo Chips and Mrs. Jones seems less depressed when she can come to coffee and interact.
2015-11-17 07:17:24 PM hesterj Why are you feeding them?
2015-11-17 07:17:26 PM wrendillon Sometimes we need to be self advocates.
2015-11-17 07:17:28 PM carlosm2015 I just got kick out of the room
2015-11-17 07:17:31 PM cmadigan16 I find that when I give the carestaff specific tasks and jobs that are enjoyable, they are more amicable to jumping in to help with engagement.
2015-11-17 07:17:31 PM kmdemers we only have a few volinteers
2015-11-17 07:17:35 PM melissam it is a little early to put up Christmas decorations. We have to wait until after thanksgiving
2015-11-17 07:17:44 PM jennc we are trained to help feed residents who can't feed themselves
