2017-01-25 06:38:48 PM juliannag I work in AL and MC community. I run programs on both sides as well as do director things. I am the only one in my department right now. I love my community though.

2017-01-25 06:39:38 PM janicelawrence6 1 and I am almost done with my mid term work. I need to study for the test!
2017-01-25 06:40:16 PM juliannag Nice! I am ahead as far as assignments, I am working on my final packet and week 5 as far as assignments.
2017-01-25 06:40:26 PM juliannag Im not to worried about the test, hope it isnt to bad though
2017-01-25 06:41:39 PM janicelawrence6 Week 5 is the on the MDS 3.0 right. I have not looked at the final packet though, is it as time consuming as the midterm packet
2017-01-25 06:44:15 PM juliannag yes week 5 is MDS which I hate because AL's dont use a MDS 3.0. The final packet isn't so bad. More reasearch things. The last task is to talk to another student about an activity you are planning. Could I bother you to chat with me about that on the open discussion board either now for a few minutes while we wait or after this chat is over?
2017-01-25 06:44:49 PM janicelawrence6 Anytime!

2017-01-25 07:04:24 PM lorimcg going with their train of thought not correcting it.
2017-01-25 07:04:25 PM cchase what else
2017-01-25 07:04:26 PM juliannag always getting into their world. never taking them out of theirs
2017-01-25 07:04:39 PM lisasittniewski doing things that are meaningful, like household stuff
2017-01-25 07:04:40 PM jamiebernard yes music seems to be the last thing they forget doesnt it
2017-01-25 07:04:50 PM jodie583 I play music often and then sing part of the song - to lead them into remembering and will dance with them (in their wheelchairs to get movement, then go back to singing - many like this
2017-01-25 07:04:50 PM cchase great julianna
2017-01-25 07:05:12 PM megansnider music is great with my folks too and small groups or one on ones
2017-01-25 07:05:19 PM juliannag we dance while the music is on. its great
2017-01-25 07:05:19 PM cchase have any of you tried sign language with singing??
2017-01-25 07:05:25 PM jodie583 YES!
2017-01-25 07:05:28 PM megansnider not overstimulating with TONS of people, esp outside foks wo are not used to the unit or residents
2017-01-25 07:05:29 PM janicelawrence6 We do the residents laundry. But I guess we cold bring in clean things to fold. Especially if they are warm from the drier.
2017-01-25 07:05:37 PM cchase jodie have you??
2017-01-25 07:05:39 PM jodie583 our volunteer pastor does this -
2017-01-25 07:05:42 PM cynthiasickler i also have a "memories in the Making" group, based on watercolor. i take 4 residents and we go to the chapel in our center and its quiet and peaceful and we paint. we paint certain things or the residents just paint whatever they want. then we talk about the paintings and in most cases the paintings bring back some kind of memory
2017-01-25 07:05:46 PM jodie583 I also sign to an extent
2017-01-25 07:05:47 PM megansnider oh gosh i have one resident WHO LOVES helping with laundry
2017-01-25 07:05:49 PM cchase very cool
2017-01-25 07:05:50 PM lorimcg ooohhhh no that sounds interesting. did you have someone come in to teach or watch videos
2017-01-25 07:05:51 PM juliannag I havent tried sign language because I dont think most understand it.
2017-01-25 07:05:53 PM lisasittniewski I do memories in the making weekly too
2017-01-25 07:06:01 PM jodie583 We do sign "help me" and "Can I help you?
2017-01-25 07:06:02 PM juliannag does it help just to be moving and get their attention??
2017-01-25 07:06:11 PM cchase it is surprising how they pick up sign
2017-01-25 07:06:13 PM selinapratt we have a laundry basket full of socks and that seems to work well, also sorting shapes and dominos
2017-01-25 07:06:14 PM heatherallen has anyone had a memory unit that slowly turned into a behavioral unit?
2017-01-25 07:06:24 PM cchase it is often used with autistic children
2017-01-25 07:06:27 PM jodie583 juliannag - yes - the movement and music together seem to be key
2017-01-25 07:06:32 PM cynthiasickler folding and sorting works well with some of our residents
2017-01-25 07:06:36 PM cchase and other illnesses
2017-01-25 07:06:45 PM jamiebernard never tried sign, it sounds interesting
2017-01-25 07:06:49 PM kerilforgues interesting
2017-01-25 07:06:51 PM tvs320 Folding napkins is something they enjoy
2017-01-25 07:06:52 PM juliannag I think i am going to try it
2017-01-25 07:06:55 PM lisasittniewski how can one learn sign language...how long does it take to get fluent enough to sign to music?
2017-01-25 07:07:02 PM jodie583 sign is great, but keeping all the CNAs up to doing it the same way is a bit hard
2017-01-25 07:07:07 PM jamiebernard we have a Sister that used to teach sign language, i could ask her
2017-01-25 07:07:07 PM cchase memory units that become behavioral units--hmmmm why?
2017-01-25 07:07:07 PM megansnider we have tried sign but it has not gone over well with our current residents
2017-01-25 07:07:16 PM juliannag sign isnt easy you have to keep up on it if you want to learn it
2017-01-25 07:07:28 PM jodie583 oh, no - it's more of an expressive signing with music - it's not word for word - ASL is the entire thought process
2017-01-25 07:07:32 PM heatherallen sudden increase in residents with behaviors.
2017-01-25 07:07:33 PM selinapratt I had to stop an activity today due to a behavior
2017-01-25 07:07:34 PM cynthiasickler i dont get how the signing works
2017-01-25 07:07:36 PM jbigham left the chat room
2017-01-25 07:07:46 PM cchase right jodie thanks for that clarification
2017-01-25 07:07:48 PM lisasittniewski jodie...so it's not real signing...i will have to try it
2017-01-25 07:07:55 PM heatherallen from mental health facilities
2017-01-25 07:08:06 PM lisasittniewski almost like arm dancing to the music...using hand jestures and such
2017-01-25 07:08:08 PM jodie583 yes, it's real signing - American Sign Language utilizes ...
2017-01-25 07:08:13 PM juliannag that makes sense
2017-01-25 07:08:14 PM cchase use a mirror technique when introducing sign with song
2017-01-25 07:08:16 PM jamiebernard so awkward when that happens selina
2017-01-25 07:08:16 PM megansnider we love a dnce party!
2017-01-25 07:08:24 PM jodie583 well - it's hard to explain - sometimes one sign takes the place of a whole sentence

2017-01-25 07:09:28 PM heatherallen we have a unit that has never expressly been a memory unit.

2017-01-25 07:09:43 PM cynthiasickler i find behavior issues sometimes occur if there is too much stimulation
2017-01-25 07:09:48 PM megansnider we do not really label that behaviors at my facility
2017-01-25 07:09:49 PM cchase all alzheimers folks have behavioral issues??

2017-01-25 07:10:05 PM lisasittniewski if they are on the verge of being violent, back away so you are not threatening
2017-01-25 07:10:08 PM cchase good... too much stimulation can cause issues
2017-01-25 07:10:11 PM cchase what else
2017-01-25 07:10:18 PM tvs320 not enought

2017-01-25 07:10:50 PM lisasittniewski need to use the bathroom but doni't know how to ask or where to find it
2017-01-25 07:10:51 PM jodie583 Many Alzheimer patients appear to have 'hitting' and 'pushing' behaviors it seems with me when sight and sound get confused
2017-01-25 07:10:53 PM cynthiasickler rushed with their care
2017-01-25 07:10:56 PM selinapratt She believed staff was stealing from a church and threatning to hit them with her purse full of magazines. At that time redirection did not work. I tried.
2017-01-25 07:11:02 PM sherika1 WHEN THEY FEEL LOCKED IN
2017-01-25 07:11:03 PM cchase so they could be many reasons for behvioral issues
2017-01-25 07:11:05 PM tvs320 or something they used to do... but cant now. You think they will like it but it causes frustration
2017-01-25 07:11:06 PM lorimcg out of their daily routine
2017-01-25 07:11:08 PM lisasittniewski yes

2017-01-25 07:11:14 PM jodie583 tvs320 - agreed
2017-01-25 07:11:17 PM jbigham enter the chat room
2017-01-25 07:11:22 PM lisasittniewski i lead them to it if they verbalize they need to go
2017-01-25 07:11:26 PM selinapratt I think meds have alot to do with it also
2017-01-25 07:11:26 PM juliannag watch for signs. body language is important
2017-01-25 07:11:33 PM megansnider restroom is a hot issue for one of my folks
2017-01-25 07:11:39 PM shawna celeste I finally got in. A lot of people are not understanding your instructions to get in this room. Will I get credit?
2017-01-25 07:11:41 PM lorimcg when their usual staff is off or away for long periods of time
2017-01-25 07:11:41 PM lisasittniewski if they can't verbalize it, I check with the aide to see when the last time they went
2017-01-25 07:11:44 PM cynthiasickler even the residents without alzheimers get angry when they have to use the bathroom, the waits are ridiculous
2017-01-25 07:11:48 PM cchase ok - so someone asked how you know it is decline or meds issues
2017-01-25 07:11:52 PM jamiebernard while on outings, its very disorienting for them
2017-01-25 07:11:56 PM cchase anyone answer that???
2017-01-25 07:12:01 PM tvs320 So many feel the need to go but they cant go
2017-01-25 07:12:14 PM sherika1 WHATS THE QUESTION
2017-01-25 07:12:16 PM lisasittniewski i let the medical staff deal with that...i let them know that thier behaviour is off...usually they already know
2017-01-25 07:12:19 PM juliannag behavior is way out of character
2017-01-25 07:12:20 PM jodie583 we discuss med changes in behavior meetings - talk about when meds have changed and watched for signs
2017-01-25 07:12:21 PM tvs320 I think maybe on how long it lasts
2017-01-25 07:12:24 PM selinapratt I think it's both.
2017-01-25 07:12:47 PM lorimcg when it is a more significient change over a long period of time
2017-01-25 07:12:48 PM lisasittniewski let them deal with it bacuase I am not specialized in medical...but point out that there may be an issue
2017-01-25 07:13:02 PM cchase you are with that Alzheimer's person and are the second set of eyes for the medical staff
2017-01-25 07:13:03 PM tvs320 I have a resident with a decline rt now... I am hoping it is a med issue. That is why I asked
2017-01-25 07:13:04 PM jamiebernard i would bring it to the nursing staff attention if the behaviour is way out of character.
2017-01-25 07:13:06 PM janicelawrence6 med changes information usually doesnt come down to us until we ask why someone is behaving differentlyl;
2017-01-25 07:13:06 PM jodie583 if it continues - many times decline -
2017-01-25 07:13:12 PM cynthiasickler i feel one thing they should always check first is uti's, i dont think some caregivers realize sitting in wet under garments causes utis and not enough liquid
2017-01-25 07:13:15 PM heatherallen how do your residents like coloring?
2017-01-25 07:13:20 PM cchase you could see something way before the medical staff does
2017-01-25 07:13:22 PM lisasittniewski good way to put it Celeste... like that
2017-01-25 07:13:33 PM cynthiasickler our residents love coloring
2017-01-25 07:13:34 PM cchase you could notice a change in behavior
2017-01-25 07:13:34 PM jamiebernard yes true
2017-01-25 07:13:35 PM janicelawrence6 Coloring is popular right now.
2017-01-25 07:13:38 PM sherika1 I AGREE CNTHIA
2017-01-25 07:13:40 PM heatherallen my new admin doesn't want that to be an activity on our unit.
2017-01-25 07:13:43 PM lisasittniewski very true
2017-01-25 07:13:43 PM megansnider we have an amazing memory care directr who has cut the number of our folks on medsfor behavior issues from about 26 of our 30 to just 4
2017-01-25 07:13:44 PM jbigham We discuss in collaberative care meetings. I have a client that got really hateful with me last week, but in between cursing me, she kept grabbing her knee and wincing. I knew the behavior was caused by the pain. Mentioned it in collaberative care, and we're investigating new pain cream for the knee.
2017-01-25 07:13:50 PM jodie583 true - we do often see things & so do our housekeepers
2017-01-25 07:13:55 PM janicelawrence6 I aske what interest them and find printable copies to download
2017-01-25 07:14:01 PM jbigham Hopefully this will help her cursing.
