2016-06-01 06:10:57 PM naomid yes please
2016-06-01 06:10:58 PM susieq4220 Okay, so I will learn from you.
2016-06-01 06:10:58 PM mariahmatthews yes!
2016-06-01 06:11:05 PM susieq4220 yes!
2016-06-01 06:11:12 PM cchase which topic??
2016-06-01 06:11:37 PM cchase adult day or alz's
2016-06-01 06:11:55 PM mariahmatthews I would prefer alzheimer's
2016-06-01 06:12:00 PM susieq4220 Do you find the behaviors less agressive in adc?
2016-06-01 06:12:02 PM naomid how do you explain to a caregiver they should not be shopping alone?
2016-06-01 06:12:28 PM naomid I have a wife who is in denial
2016-06-01 06:12:30 PM zuly02 enter the chat room
2016-06-01 06:12:38 PM cchase ok so we will do alz...we just had this chat last wed.
2016-06-01 06:12:43 PM cchase here we go
2016-06-01 06:12:50 PM susieq4220 Okay...
2016-06-01 06:12:56 PM zuly02 ready
2016-06-01 06:13:05 PM cchase when Alz behaviors get that agresssive we do not keep them in ADH
2016-06-01 06:13:44 PM cchase every first wed. I do adult day the beginning of the month and Alz end of the month..no worries
2016-06-01 06:13:47 PM zuly02 whats ADH ?
2016-06-01 06:13:55 PM susieq4220 I mean do the adh residents always want to go home like in our memory unit, or are they more calm about being there for a day?
2016-06-01 06:14:08 PM cchase I do adult day chat first wed. and alz last wed of the month
2016-06-01 06:14:10 PM naomid it depends on the person
2016-06-01 06:14:35 PM naomid we find it easier to call it their health club and they are members
2016-06-01 06:14:35 PM cchase adult day health = ADH
2016-06-01 06:14:37 PM valerieg enter the chat room
2016-06-01 06:14:41 PM susieq4220 I'm fine learning about Adult Day, if that's the topic
2016-06-01 06:14:45 PM zuly02 THANK YOU
2016-06-01 06:15:22 PM mariahmatthews sounds good
2016-06-01 06:15:32 PM mariahmatthews Let's talk ADH
2016-06-01 06:15:37 PM cchase if your memory unit is LTC - it is more likely that when they say "they want to go home" really meaning.
2016-06-01 06:16:01 PM cchase they are not feeling safe and want to go somewhere where they feel safe....like home
2016-06-01 06:16:20 PM zuly02 We are building a bus stop for one of our resident because he always want tto wait fot the bus
2016-06-01 06:16:23 PM susieq4220 Agreed
2016-06-01 06:16:36 PM cchase love that
2016-06-01 06:16:40 PM naomid we do a 1st week budy system
2016-06-01 06:16:52 PM cchase we can talk both ADH & Alz
2016-06-01 06:17:04 PM mariahmatthews So, what is the best response to someone that says "I want to go home" repeatedly?
2016-06-01 06:17:08 PM zuly02 and another one for a resident who loves working with paper work so we are doing an office
2016-06-01 06:17:14 PM valerieg That's a great idea, naomi... then residents make friends and have someone they can turn to.
2016-06-01 06:17:22 PM naomid I work for an ADH that specializes in alz & dementia
2016-06-01 06:17:30 PM cchase I love your units strategy
2016-06-01 06:17:56 PM cchase best response - is to redirect
2016-06-01 06:18:09 PM cchase do you have ideas to do that??
2016-06-01 06:18:34 PM susieq4220 Yes, but for some of our residents, home is a place that does not exist anymore but in memory. We go outside for fresh air now that the days are nice.
2016-06-01 06:18:42 PM cchase my center also specializes in Alz/dementia.... I am at an ADH facility
2016-06-01 06:18:45 PM zuly02 is it bad to tell the the followin " This is your house right now, your family feels like this is the right place for you, she wants you to be safe"
2016-06-01 06:19:00 PM naomid you can say oh,but no one is home right now they wanted you to relax today and have fun...lets go do .....
2016-06-01 06:19:05 PM cchase correct home does not exist but do not tell them that
2016-06-01 06:19:07 PM susieq4220 Ask them to describe their home.
2016-06-01 06:19:21 PM cchase reality orientation was a disaster
2016-06-01 06:19:26 PM valerieg When one of my residents is confused and trying to get out to "go home", I take them for a "walk" around the "neighborhood" (the unit). We talk about neighbors, and our evening routines (fixing dinner, looking after the kids, etc.)
2016-06-01 06:19:27 PM mariahmatthews I have a few residents who are content to drive by their previous homes. When they say they are homesick, we drive by their farm and they feel better.
2016-06-01 06:19:29 PM susieq4220 Did they have a garden
2016-06-01 06:19:45 PM cchase telling them it is no longer there will cause them to be so sad
2016-06-01 06:19:50 PM susieq4220 Do they have pets?
2016-06-01 06:20:13 PM cchase good work valerie
2016-06-01 06:20:36 PM cchase that is good redirection - while keeping the feelings positive
2016-06-01 06:20:46 PM valerieg When a resident is confused and talking about something that is not happening right now, I "go there with them"... talk with them about their reality. They usually calm right down when they feel like someone hears them.
2016-06-01 06:20:58 PM susieq4220 I had a woman who was just heart-broken that her mother was in the hospital and she needed to get a ride to see her. I just sat and hugged her and said that I was sorry that I did not know what was going on.
2016-06-01 06:21:23 PM cchase yes sir - that's the way to do it - good going valerie
2016-06-01 06:22:14 PM naomid we go into there reality, things go so much smoother
2016-06-01 06:22:22 PM cchase right
2016-06-01 06:22:38 PM zuly02 we have to enter thir world
2016-06-01 06:22:47 PM cchase never tell them that what they need is not available
2016-06-01 06:23:20 PM susieq4220 I go to the level of their feelings, not reality orientation. I know their feelings are most important at that moment.
2016-06-01 06:23:36 PM cchase really good susie
2016-06-01 06:23:48 PM naomid I have a gentelman every day at 4 pm comes to my office and says can you call the garage for my car im ready to go home
2016-06-01 06:24:17 PM cchase do you all know that the area of the brain that holds feelings.....is the last to be affected by Alz...???
2016-06-01 06:24:31 PM mariahmatthews what about residents with "word" salad. We have one resident who cannot voice what she needs and quickly gets into fights with other residents and staff. I have found that the best approach is to remove her from the situation and encourage her to talk a walk with me, sit down for a cup of coffee, etc. She is so lonely though. Any suggestions?
2016-06-01 06:24:37 PM cchase thus, why they are all about feelings
2016-06-01 06:24:37 PM zuly02 i didn;t knoe
2016-06-01 06:24:40 PM naomid I love it, turns out at 4 he would ask his secratery to call for a car and at 5 he would go home
2016-06-01 06:24:43 PM zuly02 great to know
2016-06-01 06:24:44 PM susieq4220 With my gentleman, I talk about old baseball players or working with tools. I have such a background that can relate to men very easily.
2016-06-01 06:25:13 PM susieq4220 Would that area of the brain be the amygdala or the limbic system?
2016-06-01 06:25:54 PM cchase sometimes - the only recourse is to remove them from the area they are getting upset at
2016-06-01 06:26:22 PM naomid mariah can she write?
2016-06-01 06:26:44 PM naomid we gave someone a white board she can write it better than speak it
2016-06-01 06:26:52 PM susieq4220 Actually, I have a better question that I believe. The brain is affected by dementia, but what about the neuronal system in the heart? The heart has its own sense of thinking, and that I consider with our feelings.
2016-06-01 06:27:41 PM mariahmatthews Naomi I have asked her to try and write what she needs and she has refused.
2016-06-01 06:28:07 PM naomid hmm, how about flash cards?
2016-06-01 06:28:28 PM valerieg Mariah-- what religion is your resident?
2016-06-01 06:28:42 PM mariahmatthews But perhaps I should keep encouraging her. I have gotten her to draw
2016-06-01 06:28:47 PM mariahmatthews She is catholic
2016-06-01 06:28:56 PM cchase the brain at the end of the disease...can no longer tell the organs in the body how to function
2016-06-01 06:29:09 PM cchase organs begin to fail
2016-06-01 06:29:19 PM naomid maybe just a card that says give me a minute to collect my thoughts
2016-06-01 06:29:22 PM cchase ultimately the heart too
2016-06-01 06:29:29 PM valerieg Perhaps you can have a minister or volunteer spend time with her. Spirituality/Religion brings a deep level of calm to many people when they are upset.
2016-06-01 06:29:29 PM zuly02 what could you do for a resdient who is middle stage ALZ and is blind ?
2016-06-01 06:29:55 PM cchase One of the key areas of your brain that deals with showing, recognising and controlling the body's reactions to emotions is known as the limbic system. The neurons in your hippocampus play a role in emotions
2016-06-01 06:29:56 PM naomid good one Zuly
2016-06-01 06:30:05 PM valerieg zuly- lots of sensory. Music. Touch.
2016-06-01 06:30:19 PM cchase texture is great for blind
2016-06-01 06:30:19 PM susieq4220 Wow, Zuly... I would do lots of sensory and smelling.
2016-06-01 06:30:31 PM cchase material - sand paper - buttons
2016-06-01 06:30:51 PM mariahmatthews Naomi and Valerie, those are good ideas. I actually have a very cognitive resident who I spend an hour with every week discussing spirituality. I should try and get him to talk with my other resident
2016-06-01 06:30:51 PM susieq4220 I worked with a blind man who was great at gardening, by touch.
2016-06-01 06:30:55 PM zuly02 more one on ones ?
2016-06-01 06:30:56 PM cchase yes sensory related...music
2016-06-01 06:31:25 PM valerieg smells of books, cupcakes, earth, ...
2016-06-01 06:31:27 PM zuly02 she is a new resident but I want to make sure she is getting stimulation
2016-06-01 06:31:48 PM susieq4220 I just joined Golden Carers and get lots of ideas from Pinterest.
2016-06-01 06:31:48 PM valerieg conversation is ALWAYS good
2016-06-01 06:31:57 PM naomid we have books on tape
2016-06-01 06:32:10 PM cchase that's agreat source susie
2016-06-01 06:32:32 PM zuly02 I'll check pinterest
2016-06-01 06:32:34 PM valerieg What is Golden Carers, Susie?
2016-06-01 06:32:46 PM cchase you all should see the utube video - "alive inside"
2016-06-01 06:32:49 PM susieq4220 It's an activity site.
2016-06-01 06:32:57 PM mariahmatthews Alive inside is fantastic!
2016-06-01 06:32:58 PM susieq4220 I love that video.
2016-06-01 06:33:04 PM naomid I have seen it amazing
2016-06-01 06:33:07 PM valerieg I'll check them out :)
2016-06-01 06:33:07 PM zuly02 looking for it
2016-06-01 06:33:09 PM mariahmatthews I brought that movie to my facility
2016-06-01 06:33:21 PM cchase great folks!!
2016-06-01 06:33:26 PM susieq4220 I showed it on my learning night.
2016-06-01 06:33:45 PM mariahmatthews I have been doing an iPod and music drive in my facility to get staff involved
2016-06-01 06:33:48 PM zuly02 for families
2016-06-01 06:34:09 PM susieq4220 And the book by Jolene Brakey, Creating Moments Of Joy
2016-06-01 06:34:22 PM zuly02 I would like to do a connection and show videos that are helpful to families
2016-06-01 06:34:32 PM valerieg what did you like best about the book, susie
2016-06-01 06:34:38 PM susieq4220 I think EVERY resident can be reached
2016-06-01 06:34:41 PM zuly02 do you know of other rhat would help them ?
2016-06-01 06:34:46 PM naomid I have a question
2016-06-01 06:34:54 PM susieq4220 Jolene has such love and compassion
2016-06-01 06:35:04 PM zuly02 other helpful videos for families
2016-06-01 06:35:51 PM susieq4220 Wasn't "Alive Inside," with Naomi Fell?
2016-06-01 06:35:53 PM valerieg susieq4220 I agree, susie. It just takes a little imagination...thinking about how would *I* want to be approached...
2016-06-01 06:35:55 PM kimberly1 enter the chat room
2016-06-01 06:35:58 PM naomid i know facilities are supposed to have so many hours for spiritual care my question is is ADH required to do the same amount of time?
2016-06-01 06:36:08 PM kimberly1 Hello
2016-06-01 06:36:11 PM cchase not sure susie??
2016-06-01 06:36:40 PM cchase ADH has very similar regs. now as LTC
2016-06-01 06:36:54 PM susieq4220 I host a spiritual service when no other minister comes. The residents love the singing, and I read stories from Guideposts or other books
2016-06-01 06:37:13 PM cchase our participants are offered/ need to be offered faith related opporunities
2016-06-01 06:37:14 PM kimberly1 left the chat room
2016-06-01 06:37:18 PM valerieg susieq4220 I tend to befrend my "problem" residents. Once they feel like I'm an ally, they're more likely to take it to heart when I ask them to change a behavior.
2016-06-01 06:37:19 PM susieq4220 U-Tube has most hymns with lyrics
2016-06-01 06:37:45 PM cchase .they can turn it down ...so long as it is offered
2016-06-01 06:38:02 PM susieq4220 Valerie, I'm sure all residents need to be loved.
2016-06-01 06:38:13 PM naomid ok, I have not been able to get someone in to "talk" or anything
2016-06-01 06:38:16 PM cchase gaining "trust" is huge valerie
2016-06-01 06:38:32 PM mariahmatthews Valerie, I agree with you! I have one resident that has been frustrating everybody with his behaviors. I have befriended hims since day one. Because of that, I can prevent a lot of his behaviors before they happen.
2016-06-01 06:38:36 PM valerieg Do any of you have residents of religions other than Christianity? How do you address their spiritual needs? I feel that we tend to be biased in our spiritual offerings.
2016-06-01 06:38:55 PM zuly02 thats true once the resident feels that connection with you they trust when you are caring for them
2016-06-01 06:38:58 PM cchase naomid_ try music...getting them to sing to it..
2016-06-01 06:39:12 PM susieq4220 Hmmm. good point, Valerie.
2016-06-01 06:39:13 PM valerieg mariah- that's awesome! It's also so rewarding to have staff comment that they notice a change in a resident because of it :)
2016-06-01 06:39:32 PM zuly02 we offered the same religious services as the assisted living
2016-06-01 06:39:37 PM naomid I have a couple jewish , Jehovah's Witnesses and one one im not sure of but most are catholic
2016-06-01 06:40:10 PM mariahmatthews Valerie: Unfortunately, my facility has just given him 30 day notice. Now I am fighting to keep him!
2016-06-01 06:40:30 PM cchase we are trying non-denominational..worship...more on the lines of "spiritual"
2016-06-01 06:40:30 PM naomid I have a lady that comes in and plays gospel music once a month, that is what I have been using
2016-06-01 06:40:36 PM valerieg Good for you, mariah!
2016-06-01 06:40:47 PM cchase it hs been more redily rec'd
2016-06-01 06:41:05 PM zuly02 we also offer a non denominational
2016-06-01 06:41:15 PM susieq4220 I find most of our residents have been exposed to similiar hymns, so our services are non-denom.
2016-06-01 06:41:37 PM cchase right susie
2016-06-01 06:41:47 PM susieq4220 Jesus Loves Me
2016-06-01 06:41:55 PM mariahmatthews We have a different denomination each weekend of the month
2016-06-01 06:41:58 PM cchase spiritual seems to calm them --
2016-06-01 06:42:01 PM zuly02 left the chat room

2016-06-01 06:42:09 PM zuly02 kicked me out back on
2016-06-01 06:42:23 PM valerieg I am an ordained Interfaith Minister, but I haven't mentioned it to my facility.
2016-06-01 06:42:23 PM cchase zuly --- you are making me dizzy
2016-06-01 06:42:28 PM zuly02 we sing hymns after service
2016-06-01 06:42:43 PM cchase (lol)
2016-06-01 06:42:45 PM susieq4220 If I had a nickel for every time I've sung You Are My Sunshine, I'd be rich!!!!
2016-06-01 06:42:55 PM zuly02 why ?8-)
2016-06-01 06:42:56 PM naomid I love that song
2016-06-01 06:43:03 PM cchase oh...you are my sunshine
2016-06-01 06:43:11 PM cchase awesome song.
2016-06-01 06:43:12 PM naomid my only sunshine
2016-06-01 06:43:14 PM zuly02 we love that song
2016-06-01 06:43:19 PM zuly02 never gets old
2016-06-01 06:43:21 PM susieq4220 I sing it almost every day and the residents sing right along.
2016-06-01 06:43:22 PM cchase well zuly...you keep coming and going
2016-06-01 06:43:38 PM zuly02 :'(
2016-06-01 06:43:39 PM valerieg It's a depressing song. Someone is leaving, and the singer is begging them to stay...
2016-06-01 06:43:43 PM susieq4220 They call me "songbird." that's my nickname.
2016-06-01 06:43:50 PM cchase we sang the wheels on the bus and were stunned on how they enjoyed that
2016-06-01 06:44:02 PM cchase songbird....sweet
2016-06-01 06:44:14 PM naomid bicycle built 4 2
2016-06-01 06:44:15 PM zuly02 I love sing a longs! specialy because I know all of my residents fav song
2016-06-01 06:44:30 PM zuly02 thats my song too naomid
2016-06-01 06:44:37 PM mariahmatthews I have one resident that sings in response to every question.
2016-06-01 06:44:43 PM cchase ouch...no tears
2016-06-01 06:44:54 PM valerieg One of my residents ( age 102) likes to count during exercise-- 1, 2, buckle my shoe... 3, 4, shut the door... I kid you not. We all join in and say it together :D
2016-06-01 06:44:54 PM cchase (F)
2016-06-01 06:45:11 PM zuly02 thats cute
2016-06-01 06:45:14 PM naomid (y)
2016-06-01 06:45:22 PM cchase those school days songs are the best
2016-06-01 06:45:32 PM zuly02 yes they are
2016-06-01 06:45:42 PM naomid even the grumpiest gets a smile in
2016-06-01 06:45:56 PM zuly02 i feel like our resident in the memory care love those songs more than the assisted living
2016-06-01 06:46:14 PM valerieg My signature song is Happy Trails... they all know it, too!
2016-06-01 06:46:28 PM mariahmatthews We have a local college student leading our resident choir.
2016-06-01 06:46:32 PM cchase i would not be surprised. memory care love that they know the song...
2016-06-01 06:46:43 PM mariahmatthews It's so cute because all of the women have fallen in love with the choir boy
2016-06-01 06:47:04 PM zuly02 thats true
