I've had a little experience in caring for clients with alzheimers. I've found that you must be very calm and direct with direction. I've also found that when this one person in particular I cared for, wanted to do something that wasn't safe, like leave her apartment, that I had to redirect her focus. If I told her she needed to come back in the apartment she became agitated. This is where the redirection came in. Anything I saw, like a beautiful plant in the hall, I would steer her there and then keep walking her back to her apartment. It really takes a calm person to work with an Alzheimers patient and you must be able to think fast |
