2015-06-24 06:06:47 PM cchase so one at a time - what do you know about Alzheimer's??
2015-06-24 06:06:55 PM pisces yes i don't work in an alzhiemers unit either but we have members with alzheimers
2015-06-24 06:07:11 PM stacy It deterioates the brain...
2015-06-24 06:07:32 PM richelle70 I've read a few books, done some training but would like to learn more.
2015-06-24 06:07:37 PM stacy Causing Memory Loss and eventually loss of other bodily functions
2015-06-24 06:07:37 PM barbietcu it really changes a person at times they resort back to when they were younger
2015-06-24 06:07:44 PM sarahdecollibus its harder on the family

2015-06-24 06:08:07 PM amber5 Hello
2015-06-24 06:08:11 PM stacy There are actually 10 differnt stages
2015-06-24 06:08:12 PM cchase welcome gloria
2015-06-24 06:08:19 PM naomid i work at a day center specializing in dimentia and alz

2015-06-24 06:08:41 PM cchase nice to know naomi
2015-06-24 06:08:55 PM cchase what is happening to the brain??
2015-06-24 06:08:59 PM pisces alzheimers patients can sometimes decline at a very rapid pace
2015-06-24 06:09:10 PM barbietcu deterate
2015-06-24 06:09:12 PM richelle70 shrinks
2015-06-24 06:09:15 PM naomid slowly dying
2015-06-24 06:09:16 PM cchase yes
2015-06-24 06:09:21 PM eriksh7 I know there is an abudance of plaquies and tangeles on the brain ... those plagues are some type of protein ,,, this causes the memory loss, confusion, changes in personality, etc .
2015-06-24 06:09:26 PM stacy Each person is affected differently...... But eventually over time goes through the basic stages
2015-06-24 06:09:34 PM noreens I work on a memory impaired unit with 41 beds
2015-06-24 06:09:37 PM gloria12 its so sad to see them like that
2015-06-24 06:09:44 PM acollis03 It's definitely hard on the families and loved ones, the person with Alzheimer's goes through a series of stages and may not exaclty go through all stages but will have symptoms. The residents brain is shrinking and they lose function as the Alzheimer's progresses
2015-06-24 06:09:44 PM cchase good eriksh
2015-06-24 06:09:51 PM cchase good stacy
2015-06-24 06:09:55 PM naomid u just have to see them as they are for that day
2015-06-24 06:10:09 PM pisces yes i agree
2015-06-24 06:10:23 PM amber5 I do know, with the disease, every day if different.
2015-06-24 06:10:27 PM cchase all very good
2015-06-24 06:10:53 PM cchase now tell me what it means: when we say step into there world
2015-06-24 06:10:56 PM acollis03 It is important to try and maintain a routine with these residents as much as possible this helps them
2015-06-24 06:11:09 PM naomid what gets to me is their caregivers
2015-06-24 06:11:09 PM stacy Technically, there is no certain way of definitey knowing if someone had alzhiemers with out performing an altophy after they pass away...
2015-06-24 06:11:17 PM jorey When i first learned that the brain is actually deteriorating, i was just shocked, and made it make a little more sense of why they arent the same people any more
2015-06-24 06:11:19 PM cchase yes routine important
2015-06-24 06:11:24 PM pisces you have to be able to relate and identify with them
2015-06-24 06:11:32 PM cchase correct stacy
2015-06-24 06:11:33 PM noreens I have a special connection with residents and family as my Mom passed with Lewey Body Dementia. When families are having trouble I let them know I have been in their shoes
2015-06-24 06:11:37 PM stacy You need to go where there train of thought is....
2015-06-24 06:11:43 PM barbietcu routine
2015-06-24 06:11:46 PM amber5 It means if they believe they are 16 again and in school, there is no arguing. You agree, go along
2015-06-24 06:11:56 PM acollis03 Most importantly it is important for us to be very patient with them
2015-06-24 06:12:07 PM naomid i love living in the moment w/ them
2015-06-24 06:12:08 PM pisces yes because there train of thought varies
2015-06-24 06:12:10 PM richelle70 You need to come to their reality. If they need to get there kids off of the bus, you can't tell them their kids are grown
2015-06-24 06:12:11 PM cchase right amber absolutely
2015-06-24 06:12:15 PM barbietcu yes take time out with them
2015-06-24 06:12:45 PM amber5 My facility holds an Alzheimer's support group once a month for families and friends.
2015-06-24 06:12:46 PM jorey I think entering their world is enjoyable. I love saying that hey! I will go round up the cows for you! With women who grew up on farms
2015-06-24 06:12:46 PM cchase corrent - previous caregivers work with reality orientation
2015-06-24 06:12:49 PM naomid redirecting gets hard
2015-06-24 06:12:54 PM stacy richelle70.... I think it may depend on which stage they are at.....
2015-06-24 06:12:55 PM cchase it was a disaster
2015-06-24 06:13:00 PM eriksh7 Stepping into the world is trying to understand that what an alzheimer resident says is the truth to them, and we must see it like that, then use our skills to redirect if necessary to help the resident.
2015-06-24 06:13:01 PM sarahdecollibus left the chat room
2015-06-24 06:13:34 PM eriksh7 I liked that comment jorey.
2015-06-24 06:13:43 PM richelle70 I llike the idea of a support group
2015-06-24 06:13:57 PM barbietcu yes i like that idea
2015-06-24 06:13:58 PM noreens The world they live in is okay to them , its us trying to make their world different.
2015-06-24 06:13:59 PM pisces yes because a lot of times they may reflect back on their childhood years or young adult life
2015-06-24 06:14:09 PM cchase the key is that we continue with the world that see provided that they are safe and express happy feelings
2015-06-24 06:14:11 PM eriksh7 Agreed
2015-06-24 06:14:20 PM barbietcu agree

2015-06-24 06:14:33 PM amber5 We have a woman run it from the RI chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
2015-06-24 06:14:34 PM stacy Support Groups can be bery successfull and helpful, especially to family and sometimes even the workers
2015-06-24 06:14:37 PM cchase they relive grief
2015-06-24 06:14:43 PM amber5 Yes

2015-06-24 06:16:18 PM eriksh7 yes
2015-06-24 06:16:39 PM barbietcu it is hard to redirect them
2015-06-24 06:16:41 PM stacy sometime their behavior can be the complete opposite of what they were like...
2015-06-24 06:16:44 PM noreens Never say never I have a pt. who asks if her parents are in heaven when you say yes along with mine , they are playing cards this afternoon she gets comfort , if you don't tell her that she cries looking for them and are they safe
2015-06-24 06:16:47 PM naomid asking the same thing every 5 min
2015-06-24 06:16:57 PM cchase okay - so I can tell you that this is the most often requested item caregivers need help with

2015-06-24 06:17:09 PM eriksh7 Wandering
2015-06-24 06:17:14 PM naomid yes
2015-06-24 06:17:14 PM pisces yes they constantly need redirection
2015-06-24 06:17:24 PM acollis03 They could possibily have sun-downers, try to elope the facility, have aggitation, show symptoms of sadness and cry
2015-06-24 06:17:29 PM richelle70 taking other belongings
2015-06-24 06:17:32 PM cchase do behaviors always mean what they appear to mean?
2015-06-24 06:17:35 PM barbietcu time for themself
2015-06-24 06:17:43 PM barbietcu no
2015-06-24 06:17:49 PM pisces no they do not
2015-06-24 06:17:50 PM jorey agression because of lack of being able to communicate effectively
2015-06-24 06:17:52 PM acollis03 No behaviors could be a sign of pain or afraid
2015-06-24 06:17:56 PM naomid i call it rearranging shopping
2015-06-24 06:17:58 PM stacy Repeat, Wandering, Some Quiet, Some Extremely Talkative, Some can function well others can't
2015-06-24 06:18:11 PM amber5 not always
2015-06-24 06:18:15 PM cchase yes agression does happen out of a number of reasons

2015-06-24 06:21:09 PM acollis03 Music is always a great way to engage residents with Alzheimers because music is the last working part of the brain majority of the time in most cases

2015-06-24 06:23:14 PM eriksh7 Confused about their location
2015-06-24 06:23:18 PM acollis03 We have agroup called Busy Bees for our Alzheimers patients it only last for about 15-30mins due to their short attention span but we turn on soft sound music, have coloring, painting, wash cloths and other easy items to fold, play dough for them to roll out the dough, etc. it seems to be very effective
2015-06-24 06:23:24 PM cchase wandering is good folks
2015-06-24 06:23:26 PM barbietcu YES CONFUSED ALOT
2015-06-24 06:23:29 PM stacy I think they usually have an agenda
2015-06-24 06:23:30 PM cchase to some degree
2015-06-24 06:23:38 PM stacy In their world of thinking
2015-06-24 06:23:40 PM cchase is helps to reduce anxieety
2015-06-24 06:23:41 PM naomid rolling up yarn
2015-06-24 06:23:46 PM cchase ops spelling
2015-06-24 06:23:59 PM cchase wandering or pacing reduces anxiety
2015-06-24 06:24:00 PM gracie because they are angry or bored
2015-06-24 06:24:04 PM noreens Look into their history , once had a pt. who wass a speed skater skated all day long up and down the hallway
2015-06-24 06:24:11 PM stacy Even though it may not look like it..... But in their thinking, it makes sense
2015-06-24 06:24:15 PM pisces yes rolling yarn is good
2015-06-24 06:24:16 PM jorey there is a very repetitive blind man, he is scared and feel helpless even though he is one of most active residents. What we dont understand is he isnt as repetitive when family members visit. He always has to use the restroom and wants to die and cant so anything but when his daughters are there. He is very pleasant and patient
2015-06-24 06:24:16 PM eriksh7 Interesting cchase because many staff members try to stop that behavior all together
2015-06-24 06:24:26 PM cchase it helps to rid the feeling of being anxious -
2015-06-24 06:24:37 PM barbietcu TALKTO THEM
2015-06-24 06:24:39 PM amber5 yes, to some degree. Not when the male resident wanders into the wrong room and the resident in that room threatens to kill him the next time he steps foot in there
2015-06-24 06:24:42 PM cchase repetitive tasks is very good
2015-06-24 06:24:54 PM cchase like rolling yarn
2015-06-24 06:25:12 PM amber5 I know exerciser helps. We have a stationary bike that he enjoys.
2015-06-24 06:25:17 PM barbietcu GOOD OK
2015-06-24 06:25:18 PM cchase wandering does not mean that you stop supervising
2015-06-24 06:25:19 PM jorey good to know about the wandering!
2015-06-24 06:25:20 PM stacy I think that if the nursing staff would increase their restorative programs and walk with the residents more, they would not feel so anxious because they can get their energy out....
2015-06-24 06:25:22 PM cchase for safety
2015-06-24 06:25:22 PM gracie I gave one of my residents a crochet hook and some yarn and she remembered how to crochet.
2015-06-24 06:25:27 PM gracie It was awesome
2015-06-24 06:25:28 PM pisces yes as well as folding clothes
2015-06-24 06:25:29 PM acollis03 If a resident had a certain routine everyday there is a chance they are trying to relive that routine for an example we have a resident who at times believes she has to get her grandkids off at the bus stop. Her grandkids are in their 40's but she continues to relieve that moment around 3 o'clock
2015-06-24 06:25:33 PM tcoch21 Wandering is good to a point,
2015-06-24 06:25:34 PM dbalzumati I can tell her to do something and she does something else
2015-06-24 06:25:55 PM cchase imagine being made to sit when you have a need to blow up??
2015-06-24 06:26:02 PM jorey I agree with erik our staff tries to stop wandering as well. saying they are bored
2015-06-24 06:26:02 PM naomid telling and asking makes a difference
2015-06-24 06:26:04 PM eriksh7 Agreed
2015-06-24 06:26:10 PM gracie Our staff does, too
2015-06-24 06:26:13 PM pisces agree
