2017-11-01 06:21:54 PM cchase I believe is was called senility
2017-11-01 06:22:17 PM sjorgensen Oh...I thought Dementia was the umbrella, and Alzheimers fell under that category!
2017-11-01 06:22:36 PM sjorgensen Oops...must be the other way around!
2017-11-01 06:22:55 PM cchase around about 1955. a physician disected a brain of a woman..beleived to then be called Alzheimer's
2017-11-01 06:23:14 PM cchase other diseases cause dementia
2017-11-01 06:23:54 PM cchase go back to earlier in chat ...you will see the names of other disease causing dementia
2017-11-01 06:24:25 PM cchase look up that book - about reversal
2017-11-01 06:24:33 PM nikiawyche left the chat room
2017-11-01 06:24:45 PM jatkins I wrote it down thanks
2017-11-01 06:24:51 PM cchase ok so we know the brain cannot clear the plaques and tangles
2017-11-01 06:25:05 PM cchase what do those tangles this cause??
2017-11-01 06:25:16 PM nikiawyche enter the chat room
2017-11-01 06:26:01 PM jatkins losing parts of their brain
2017-11-01 06:26:02 PM christie9 Misfiring of signals?
2017-11-01 06:26:06 PM val5 a lack on smooth connection in brain functions
2017-11-01 06:26:07 PM nikiawyche left the chat room
2017-11-01 06:26:29 PM cchase sort of correct...good val
2017-11-01 06:26:32 PM nikiawyche enter the chat room
2017-11-01 06:27:04 PM cchase the plaques get in between the brain's neurons preventing them from communcating with each other
2017-11-01 06:27:14 PM cchase think of an electric wire
2017-11-01 06:27:42 PM cchase when the wire has a break in it the electrical current cannot go through
2017-11-01 06:28:07 PM cchase any questions?
2017-11-01 06:28:38 PM jatkins Thats a good way to understand it
2017-11-01 06:28:51 PM cchase (y)
2017-11-01 06:29:01 PM jenniferhess2 it is a very good way to describe it
2017-11-01 06:29:47 PM cchase great - so understand that everything we do happens because these neurons are communicating with each other...everything!!
2017-11-01 06:30:09 PM jenniferhess2 very true
2017-11-01 06:30:51 PM jatkins What activities do ya do?
2017-11-01 06:30:52 PM val5 I read we could build new connections by learning something new, piano, crossword?
2017-11-01 06:31:14 PM sjorgensen I read something like that too, val5
2017-11-01 06:31:21 PM cchase we eat, we breathe, we talk, we interact, we walk, our internal organs are told what to do via these neurons
2017-11-01 06:32:06 PM cchase we can rebuild new pathways by learning something new --- up to a point
2017-11-01 06:32:17 PM cchase when the disease has progressed too far
2017-11-01 06:32:47 PM pdunn60 In answer to ,does anyone ever skip stages. Yes they have. I have worked in nursing home for awhile and have one go out for just a command cold /flu or a fall, and come back with advance dementia . It cna also be due to the med change. Sad thing is that sometimes with med adjustment they could bounce bad, but very likely they do. We had one who walked around all the time, who came back in a wheel chair and had a very bad gate.
2017-11-01 06:32:53 PM cchase this is why the disease is fatal...the organs shut down during end stages
2017-11-01 06:33:18 PM jenniferhess2 i have sat and watched some residents talking to their family and referring to them as someone else becuase they truely cant remember who they are
2017-11-01 06:33:47 PM jatkins and they forget to swallow
2017-11-01 06:33:56 PM sjorgensen I heard that anesthia can make Alzheimer's worse.
2017-11-01 06:34:23 PM cchase coorect pdunn60 - an illness can absolutely exacerbate the progression of dementia
2017-11-01 06:34:34 PM pdunn60 Yes I saw the same thing , see a resident refer to a grandchild as their own daughter.
2017-11-01 06:34:42 PM cchase yup forget how to swallow
2017-11-01 06:34:48 PM val5 My mom had Alzheimers for 20 yes 20 years, early onset. yes it can hold for a while and then they for get to swallow, but never forget touch and love
2017-11-01 06:34:49 PM cchase they forget how to eat
2017-11-01 06:35:13 PM christie9 or infection
2017-11-01 06:35:23 PM jatkins hugs so important
2017-11-01 06:35:27 PM sjorgensen If you hold a mirror up in front of your Alzheimers resident, they probably won't know who they are looking at.
2017-11-01 06:35:32 PM cchase so sorry val..but you are right about the touch and love.... so so important
2017-11-01 06:35:32 PM nikiawyche hugs are very impotant
2017-11-01 06:35:40 PM christie9 They love the affection
2017-11-01 06:35:50 PM cchase we do not allow mirrors for Alz
2017-11-01 06:36:18 PM cchase it can become problematic...in there minds they beleive that they are still sixteen
2017-11-01 06:36:20 PM jessicarae I was just going to ask that
2017-11-01 06:36:20 PM jatkins sorry Val prayers
2017-11-01 06:36:31 PM pdunn60 Sad to see them get deeper in dementia to where the lose all their cogntion to what is real or not..
2017-11-01 06:36:32 PM cchase when they see a reflection of somone old
2017-11-01 06:36:33 PM val5 we have mirrors everywhere, I haven't noticed an issue. I will be more aware.
2017-11-01 06:36:37 PM cchase it is a bad thing
2017-11-01 06:36:50 PM jessicarae Yes. We have had to cover mirriors on our floor so residents arent so agitated
2017-11-01 06:36:57 PM cchase we intentionally did not install mirrors
2017-11-01 06:37:08 PM jessicarae it can be very hard on them
2017-11-01 06:37:15 PM val5 Don't be sorry, it was a learning processes. All positive
2017-11-01 06:37:19 PM cchase ok so a min. on memories
2017-11-01 06:37:35 PM cchase what is long term memories??
2017-11-01 06:37:49 PM cchase versus short term memories?
2017-11-01 06:38:04 PM sjorgensen Something you learn when you're young, like prayers, or songs.
2017-11-01 06:38:05 PM cynkarnes76 stories from their childhood
2017-11-01 06:38:08 PM nikiawyche long term memory is events that happen when they were younger
2017-11-01 06:38:16 PM val5 World War II they remember, eating breakfast no
2017-11-01 06:38:18 PM jessicarae Memories that happend a long time ago. Short term memory something that happened recently
2017-11-01 06:38:19 PM sjorgensen Short term is what happened yesterday!
2017-11-01 06:38:21 PM cchase yes good.
2017-11-01 06:38:27 PM jatkins Hymns they can remember
2017-11-01 06:38:40 PM christie9 Short terrm-what we ate for breakfast yesterday
2017-11-01 06:38:45 PM cchase so long term memory LTM = that woman walking around with her baby
2017-11-01 06:38:48 PM jessicarae Short term can be minutes even
2017-11-01 06:38:55 PM pdunn60 Most can remember long term memory of their life when their children were little , they life as a nurse or truck driver, songs they sung in church.
2017-11-01 06:39:04 PM cchase oldie songs = LTM
2017-11-01 06:39:06 PM jenniferhess2 long term is way in the past where short term is something that could have happened days ago
2017-11-01 06:39:16 PM pdunn60 Short term is they can
2017-11-01 06:39:33 PM val5 short term to one resident was about 30 seconds
2017-11-01 06:39:35 PM pdunn60 They can't remember what they just ate
2017-11-01 06:39:42 PM cchase yes- so what happened is that the brain now filled with plaques & tangles will not allow any new memories to be stored
2017-11-01 06:39:48 PM sjorgensen Long term is still "in-there!" Short term doesn't have time to make a memory.
2017-11-01 06:39:57 PM jatkins they remember nursury rhymes
2017-11-01 06:40:30 PM cchase like you making a document in your computer..save it for later - you give it a name to recall
2017-11-01 06:40:51 PM jenniferhess2 exactly never thought of it that way good point
2017-11-01 06:40:59 PM cchase but when the storage center no longer will hold a new document - you cannot store new files
2017-11-01 06:41:10 PM cchase same with memories
2017-11-01 06:41:35 PM cchase short term means the brain cannot file it to recall
2017-11-01 06:41:46 PM cchase make sense??
2017-11-01 06:41:53 PM nikiawyche great example chase
2017-11-01 06:41:55 PM jatkins yes
2017-11-01 06:41:59 PM christie9 yes
2017-11-01 06:42:01 PM pdunn60 I use music memory Therapy , I put head phones on one little resident who sits still non verbly. Start patting her arm, leg and nodding her head. This is a good why to stimulate them with music
2017-11-01 06:42:02 PM jessicarae yes
2017-11-01 06:42:12 PM cchase so use that information when planning activities
2017-11-01 06:42:15 PM val5 so they have to live in and enjoy the moment
2017-11-01 06:42:24 PM cchase yup right val
2017-11-01 06:42:47 PM cchase the last area of the brain affected in where the brain stores emotions...
2017-11-01 06:42:52 PM cynkarnes76 Some nurses/CNAS may be using the Music and Memory as more of a soothing baby sitter than what it is supposed to be used for
2017-11-01 06:43:05 PM christie9 Music & Memory is wonderful
2017-11-01 06:43:18 PM cchase so you know emotions are last to be affected...that's all they can use at some point to communicate. via emotions
2017-11-01 06:43:21 PM nikiawyche yes cyn that is why I use it differently
2017-11-01 06:43:30 PM sjorgensen I just got our Music and Memory box and I'm concerned that it will become a "babysitter" too.
2017-11-01 06:43:43 PM cchase I have seen that cynthia - sad really
2017-11-01 06:43:46 PM nikiawyche yes it will
2017-11-01 06:43:56 PM val5 our emotions are as important as theirs
2017-11-01 06:44:05 PM cchase so play those old songs they can recall from LTM
2017-11-01 06:44:06 PM pdunn60 The purpose of using music therapy is to be there to monitor each reaidents response, not as baby sitter.
2017-11-01 06:44:18 PM cchase correct phdumm
2017-11-01 06:44:25 PM cchase ops...typing too fast
2017-11-01 06:44:25 PM sjorgensen Exactly why we got the program!!!
2017-11-01 06:44:31 PM nikiawyche yes phdumm
2017-11-01 06:44:45 PM val5 we research residents music with family members before making an ipod for them
2017-11-01 06:44:47 PM christie9 Pet therapy too. I take my dementia residents to a therapeutic horseback riding facility. They pet, brush, love, feed and learn about the horses. It has brought so much joy to them.
2017-11-01 06:44:54 PM cchase repeat...repeat..repeat
2017-11-01 06:45:02 PM nikiawyche its easy for those who don't understand why we use sometiing to miss use it
2017-11-01 06:45:03 PM cchase be patient
2017-11-01 06:45:10 PM sjorgensen I'm excited to start using it...and I think I will have my Activities Dept. monitor it's use by the CNA;s.
2017-11-01 06:45:18 PM cchase yes pets are super terrific
2017-11-01 06:45:36 PM cchase never...never..never argue
2017-11-01 06:45:43 PM cchase you will loose
2017-11-01 06:45:47 PM cynkarnes76 redirect
2017-11-01 06:45:47 PM jessicarae We have an in house bunny. The residents LOVE her so much!
2017-11-01 06:45:49 PM jatkins we have birds finches they love them
2017-11-01 06:45:52 PM nikiawyche they love to rub the pets we have a few fake ones that we keep in our living area
2017-11-01 06:45:54 PM cchase yup redirect
2017-11-01 06:46:10 PM cchase pets lower blodd pressure
2017-11-01 06:46:23 PM cchase calms them
2017-11-01 06:46:24 PM jessicarae mine too i think! lol
2017-11-01 06:46:26 PM jenniferhess2 they also like fish tanks
2017-11-01 06:46:28 PM val5 our residents have dogs and cats, many volunteer to bring dogs to the health center, it's great
2017-11-01 06:46:41 PM cchase yup fish tanks are awesome
2017-11-01 06:47:06 PM jatkins who cleans fish tanks?
2017-11-01 06:47:16 PM cchase if you need them to do something...do not ask them - they cannot make the choice
2017-11-01 06:47:18 PM nikiawyche I place lava lamps in residents room and some of the fish tanks that don't have real fish
2017-11-01 06:47:26 PM jenniferhess2 the last facility i was at we had fish and birds along with residents family members bringing in dogs
2017-11-01 06:47:29 PM cchase gentle tell them it's time for music
2017-11-01 06:47:35 PM cchase it's time for lunch
2017-11-01 06:47:36 PM val5 we have trouble with our tanks, a MNA cleans them, but we lose a lot of fish and residents notice
2017-11-01 06:47:37 PM sjorgensen I've seen dogs get under foot and one of our residents actually tripped on one of the dogs laying on the floor.
2017-11-01 06:47:48 PM cynkarnes76 apparently, our healthcare is supposed to get one in the next 2 to 3 years with the renovation, at least it will be a colorful distraction
2017-11-01 06:48:06 PM cchase oh my that's not good. sjorgensen
2017-11-01 06:48:17 PM jenniferhess2 it calms them to look at the fish and listen to the water
2017-11-01 06:48:21 PM sjorgensen I KNOW!!! It was scary!
2017-11-01 06:48:39 PM cchase we have a TV screen saver that is a fish tank
2017-11-01 06:48:43 PM jatkins activities clean the birds and feed
2017-11-01 06:48:56 PM cchase we have it in the quite room
2017-11-01 06:48:59 PM sjorgensen My residents don't even notice the fish tank anymore!
2017-11-01 06:49:08 PM val5 I have that screen saver on our IN2L also
2017-11-01 06:49:19 PM cchase I LOVE LOVE IN2L
2017-11-01 06:49:27 PM cchase it is amazing
2017-11-01 06:49:30 PM val5 me too!
2017-11-01 06:49:46 PM cynkarnes76 My AD is looking into it but I am not familiar with the program
2017-11-01 06:49:46 PM cchase my activity director uses it for so so many things
2017-11-01 06:49:53 PM sjorgensen We have to share ours with the physical therapy dept.
2017-11-01 06:50:07 PM cchase it is pricy for sure
2017-11-01 06:50:15 PM jessicarae What is IN2L?
2017-11-01 06:50:17 PM val5 We have 2 but one is mostly for resident use
2017-11-01 06:50:25 PM jatkins how much?
2017-11-01 06:50:40 PM pdunn60 Soft approach to all the resident, do the the reaction of sudden contact , causes allot of behavior, which could of been avoided.
2017-11-01 06:50:55 PM nikiawyche I like that IN2L also has music that is for different times of the day that also helps calm residents down
2017-11-01 06:50:57 PM cchase I asked my AD to train staff on it...and I had her write a quick reference tools for others.
2017-11-01 06:51:28 PM cchase yes... $$$ some 5 - 7 thousand??
2017-11-01 06:51:34 PM val5 I did not order ours, but I would guesstamake $10,000, ours are on fancy carts.
2017-11-01 06:51:44 PM cchase maybe it was 10

2017-11-01 06:52:13 PM sjorgensen Is it WORTH $10,000?
2017-11-01 06:52:22 PM pdunn60 We have the mimi ipods with head phones which we got a grant and training in order to get them free. Also along with free Itune gift card.

2017-11-01 06:52:40 PM jessicarae thanks
2017-11-01 06:52:53 PM cchase ok...so let's talk redirection
2017-11-01 06:53:01 PM cchase what does that mean?
2017-11-01 06:53:03 PM sjorgensen It's the Activities Director of the future!!!
2017-11-01 06:53:17 PM cchase (lol)
2017-11-01 06:53:18 PM val5 it can be misused as a music player only, or else the possibilities are endless, especially at bedside
2017-11-01 06:53:28 PM jatkins to intestest them in something else
2017-11-01 06:53:33 PM nikiawyche it can't give hugs sjorfensen
2017-11-01 06:53:44 PM cchase agreed val
2017-11-01 06:53:51 PM pdunn60 We use to have picture frames that had motion pictures like water, sounds like the wind that is calming. We having since the flood gotten back to them yet. But it is going well.
2017-11-01 06:53:51 PM cchase so how do you redirect??
2017-11-01 06:54:28 PM jatkins compliment what there wearing
2017-11-01 06:54:33 PM cynkarnes76 great if you can catch them early. Be kind and calm
2017-11-01 06:54:53 PM pdunn60 We have bird feeders around some of the out door seating which the residents love to feed them. They love working in the flowers around about as well.
2017-11-01 06:54:55 PM jessicarae Get down to their level if in WC
2017-11-01 06:54:56 PM nikiawyche ofter something different give a compliment or a smile
2017-11-01 06:54:59 PM val5 I put myself in their situation and agree with them, then find a way for both of us to do something else
2017-11-01 06:55:09 PM jenniferhess2 if they are trying to leave the building you go up to them and be like lets go play a game or lets take a walk this way
2017-11-01 06:55:19 PM jenniferhess2 thats redirecting
2017-11-01 06:55:20 PM cchase never tap anyone from behind - make eye contact
2017-11-01 06:55:23 PM cchase smile

2017-11-01 06:55:26 PM jatkins cookies
2017-11-01 06:55:30 PM cchase did I say smile
2017-11-01 06:55:30 PM cynkarnes76 I approach my lady with a smile and try to appeal to her like today, she was in another person's room and I told her her husband was looking for her and led her to dinner
2017-11-01 06:55:39 PM sjorgensen I had a resident who kept yelling "help!" So, I started singing the Beatles song "help" then she started singing it, too! Everybody started singing, she forgot that she was yelling "help" and we had a fun afternoon!!!
2017-11-01 06:55:47 PM pdunn60 I want to check on this fish tank tv screen saver. Could this a program that can be hook up on a regular tv?
2017-11-01 06:55:59 PM christie9 "White lies" If they are perseverating on where their wife/husband is or they need to get to their car.... We say it's in the shop or that said wife called and they are running late. The baby dolls seem to relieve them too. I ask tem to watch my baby for me.
2017-11-01 06:56:08 PM cchase very very nice sjorgensen - that's a huge redirection
2017-11-01 06:56:20 PM cynkarnes76 Christie9: her husband lives there too, it was the truth
2017-11-01 06:56:20 PM jatkins thats great sjorgenson
2017-11-01 06:56:23 PM sjorgensen Thanks...

2017-11-01 06:56:54 PM cchase so tap on the OLD memories
2017-11-01 06:56:58 PM pdunn60 Activites have to do all the cleaning a monitoring all the cleaning of the bird feeders and things around it. REally jack of all trade.
2017-11-01 06:57:15 PM val5 White lies, smiles, stories and saying you will find a solution and making an effort in that direction so they will always trust you.
2017-11-01 06:57:26 PM cchase babies, songs, housework, gardening, music,, sensory (apple pie) hmmmm good
2017-11-01 06:57:45 PM cchase sensory smelling like food helps them to eat
2017-11-01 06:57:51 PM cynkarnes76 Sometimes, I have to lean on other staff

2017-11-01 07:00:08 PM pdunn60 Love using dolls , they light up their parental skills . We have one day a week where I go get unmatch socks for them to find the match . Helping set up decorations for parties, all wakes up the need to be helpful and feel needed.
2017-11-01 07:00:10 PM nikiawyche only get the back up if you need it to many ppl will make it feel crowed and the resident will feel like they are being attacked
