2017-06-01 06:22:36 PM ryanklemmer How do you all do your fireworks for the 4th with the residents?
2017-06-01 06:22:44 PM andriapowell I just heard about a new activity when I went to our activity Director meeting. It's called Butter Bean auction. They have it twice a year. People donate items and companies donate items. they get as much as the can donated. each item is placed in view so all residents can look the items. Before the auction takes place each resident gets 20 butter beans. You have to color code them because some families try to duplicate them she said. Then every time they come to an activity or volunteer they get extra butter beans.
2017-06-01 06:22:53 PM jadams69 we are planning a fourth of july party in the court yard hopefully with a few fireworks
2017-06-01 06:23:31 PM kathyhughes Great Andria and coloring them is a good idea
2017-06-01 06:23:40 PM cathyross I thought noisemakers would be least harmful but very stimulating to the senses.
2017-06-01 06:23:41 PM kathyhughes We can't do fireworks in NY
2017-06-01 06:23:48 PM erikalmascia Our town puts on a large firework show, our residents can enjoy them on our 5th floor.

2017-06-01 06:25:00 PM kathyhughes oh
2017-06-01 06:25:07 PM ryanklemmer They say it has a reputation for UFOs
2017-06-01 06:25:18 PM jadams69 we have fire work displays right next to us so Im hoping they can see those.
2017-06-01 06:25:38 PM andriapowell Where I worked at before in Indiana I would put off a fireworks show every 4th

2017-06-01 06:28:46 PM carolyna I have a resident that wants to look at the stars at night, I told her we should go out and howl at the full moon, she laughed
2017-06-01 06:29:00 PM andriapowell They said they had an auctioneer donate their time and the residents would have paddles and staff would help them
2017-06-01 06:29:07 PM sarah1111 she wants to see the stars?? that is adorable

2017-06-01 06:37:57 PM carolyna the residents who own them but there is a sister facility that have a house dog and the staff take care of it but the food comes from the activity budget which I don't think is right
2017-06-01 06:38:11 PM erikalmascia We have fish, which activities take care of.
2017-06-01 06:38:14 PM kathyhughes We had an ADM who wanted birds...so we got birds that night the residents let them loose
2017-06-01 06:38:27 PM ryanklemmer Wow
2017-06-01 06:38:28 PM andriapowell We several therapy dogs that come in for pet visits through out the month and we have an aviary.
2017-06-01 06:38:33 PM bford :D
2017-06-01 06:38:38 PM cathyross how do the pet visits work?
2017-06-01 06:38:39 PM kathyhughes I came in the next day and each cage had huge locks on them
2017-06-01 06:38:43 PM mayraj i have thought about getting turtles
2017-06-01 06:38:46 PM erikalmascia Oh no :0
2017-06-01 06:39:10 PM kathyhughes The maintenace dept had to take care of them
2017-06-01 06:39:13 PM bford our facility volunteer services screen them and put them on a schedule monthly
2017-06-01 06:39:18 PM ryanklemmer We have a few residents who have dogs, so the other residents have pleanty of opportunities to pet them
2017-06-01 06:39:28 PM kathyhughes I would look at that before I got turtles
2017-06-01 06:39:34 PM andriapowell don't turtles carry bacteria? I don't know
2017-06-01 06:39:41 PM jadams69 we had minature ponies come about once every 3 months. they like them. we have turtles in our courtyard.
2017-06-01 06:39:42 PM kathyhughes I think that they do
2017-06-01 06:39:47 PM carolyna at the other facility I worked at the DON wanted lovebirds well we got them and we had national geographic channel everyday, they kept humping
2017-06-01 06:39:49 PM kathyhughes I would do some research
2017-06-01 06:39:57 PM kacies reptiles can carry alot of diseases, salmonella and such
2017-06-01 06:40:13 PM amarkie i had a rabbit
2017-06-01 06:40:16 PM kacies i have several reptiles of my own, so im not against them but they are work
2017-06-01 06:40:20 PM sarah1111 carolyna hahaha
2017-06-01 06:40:38 PM kacies they also smell, no matter what. so that may draw attention during survey
2017-06-01 06:40:43 PM schmiess1 we have an aviary-not much use...we use plush robotic puppies and kittens, 2 birds
2017-06-01 06:40:53 PM carolyna yeah, I just found out that they had to get rid of them, because the male would not leave the female alone and she had an egg crack inside her
2017-06-01 06:40:53 PM kathyhughes we did some research on the birds and found out that if their nests were too warm they could not have baby birds
2017-06-01 06:40:56 PM mayraj good to know.
2017-06-01 06:41:05 PM erikalmascia Aww. :(
2017-06-01 06:41:09 PM kathyhughes so the residents would give them yarn for their nests
2017-06-01 06:41:23 PM kathyhughes the residents were not too keen about the birds
2017-06-01 06:41:26 PM kacies thats cute
2017-06-01 06:41:31 PM kacies i bet they loved it
2017-06-01 06:41:35 PM mayraj im still too nervous to get a pet for work.
2017-06-01 06:41:48 PM kathyhughes I would say think about it
2017-06-01 06:41:57 PM carolyna neither were the residents at my first facility. they were just too noisy for the residents
2017-06-01 06:42:13 PM kathyhughes as the pet would be on duty 24-7 and they need some down time
2017-06-01 06:42:22 PM mayraj the social worker sometimes brings her dog and they like that. but im not sure about pet to keep in.
2017-06-01 06:42:27 PM erikalmascia yea. I bet.
2017-06-01 06:42:36 PM kathyhughes I would say bring it into work with you and then take it home
2017-06-01 06:42:41 PM amarkie its alot of responsibility on your shoulders having a pet live at work
2017-06-01 06:42:42 PM cathyross me too
2017-06-01 06:43:02 PM carolyna I think a housepet gets too confused on who its master is
2017-06-01 06:43:18 PM kathyhughes right and the activities staff is usually in charge of them and we don;t have the time
2017-06-01 06:43:29 PM erikalmascia i agree.
2017-06-01 06:43:41 PM carolyna yeah I get yelled at for so much stuff anyway
2017-06-01 06:43:41 PM bford at my old facility we had dogs and one time a person fell out of bed and the dog alerted the staff and the nurses found her sooner- positive about having a dog live at the facility
2017-06-01 06:43:46 PM andriapowell I think so too carolyna and maybe tend to be over fed by all
2017-06-01 06:43:46 PM kathyhughes Right Carolyn and they tend to get stresses
2017-06-01 06:43:59 PM amarkie no kathy we dont. and the vet visits making for the rabbit was out of my pocket
2017-06-01 06:44:01 PM mayraj that is exactly what i am thinking, time and extra responsability that will fall completely on my shoulders.
2017-06-01 06:44:02 PM amarkie not cheap
2017-06-01 06:44:09 PM kathyhughes Thats good Brittany
2017-06-01 06:44:12 PM kacies you really need to find an animal with the right temperment and that usually happens by chance not choice
2017-06-01 06:44:16 PM erikalmascia That is good.
2017-06-01 06:44:53 PM bford thank you! the dog was everyone responsiablilty and there was a set schedule and day who fed and take them out :)
2017-06-01 06:45:15 PM erikalmascia Was everyone okay with that?
2017-06-01 06:45:37 PM mayraj this is out of topic but saying that i have met all the requirements to take the test for my certification, would you happen to know an estimate time it would take for them to send me to take the test/
2017-06-01 06:45:39 PM mayraj /
2017-06-01 06:45:44 PM mayraj ?
2017-06-01 06:45:47 PM erikalmascia We were going to get a cat, but no one wanted to deal with it.
2017-06-01 06:46:02 PM ryanklemmer Where would the cat live?
2017-06-01 06:46:11 PM ryanklemmer Just in the hallways?
2017-06-01 06:46:13 PM erikalmascia I guess at our facility.
2017-06-01 06:47:03 PM kathyhughes Once you apply to NCCAP they will send you the information on where the exam is offered and they will give you the pass...usually 4-6 weeks once they receive your application
2017-06-01 06:47:13 PM sarah1111 left the chat room
2017-06-01 06:47:18 PM erikalmascia OK.
2017-06-01 06:47:19 PM sarah1111 enter the chat room
2017-06-01 06:47:32 PM kathyhughes Cats usually pick one person to gravitate to
2017-06-01 06:47:36 PM carolyna is that still the time frame on leveling up too?
2017-06-01 06:47:40 PM schmiess1 we use to have a cat and yes no one wanted to deal with him. He got pretty old and mangie, had hardly any teeth, and ended up going to the bathroom in residents rooms.
2017-06-01 06:47:53 PM kathyhughes You can level up whenever you are ready
2017-06-01 06:47:54 PM ryanklemmer I wish I could apply before finishing this class so I wouldn't have to wait another month to take the exam.
2017-06-01 06:47:58 PM sarah1111 my dog loves about everyone here
2017-06-01 06:48:06 PM sarah1111 but she get protected of the residnets
2017-06-01 06:48:08 PM carolyna did the cat have hyperthyroid?
2017-06-01 06:48:16 PM mayraj thanks for the info kathy..
2017-06-01 06:48:29 PM kathyhughes You have to complete MEPAP1 and MEPAP 2 to be able to take the exam
2017-06-01 06:48:29 PM sarah1111 so she grumbles at guests sometimes which is not so good
2017-06-01 06:48:49 PM amarkie do you need all your ceus done before exam?
2017-06-01 06:48:55 PM cathyross yes
