2019-08-29 06:05:26 PM karlyz We made ice cream in a bag yesterday.... SUPER easy and the residents loved it! I was surprised since they had to shake their own bag for 15 mins !
2019-08-29 06:05:29 PM donna61 dianep where did you go for lunch
2019-08-29 06:05:45 PM dianep A place called Luigis
2019-08-29 06:05:53 PM raninjnj i bought cow boy hats and had a western theme
2019-08-29 06:05:59 PM virginiamooney love the ice cream idea!
2019-08-29 06:06:18 PM kyoung I take my residents out to lunch every tuesday, we could use more reliable buses...our better drivers that are easier on the buses lol
2019-08-29 06:06:21 PM donna61 Ice Cream in a bag sounds fun
2019-08-29 06:06:30 PM virginiamooney awe.. fun! Everyone loves a cowboy!
2019-08-29 06:06:49 PM briannad that is so cute
2019-08-29 06:07:13 PM kyoung We did the ice cream in a bag a few weeks ago and they loved it! Super easy and fun!
2019-08-29 06:07:38 PM donna61 Senior meals would love for us to bring a few folks to join them
2019-08-29 06:07:55 PM azhia1 enter the chat room
2019-08-29 06:08:00 PM donna61 Love super easy projects
2019-08-29 06:08:05 PM virginiamooney I will have to try it. Right now my residents are complaining about too much food activities. lol
2019-08-29 06:08:15 PM dianep Our culinary does pop up meals, next month is Tex Mex. We decorate the dining room to the theme.
2019-08-29 06:08:20 PM briannad those are great ideas
2019-08-29 06:08:24 PM kyoung I do a cooking program once a week, this week we made a chocolate pudding mousse pie! It's a no bake option which they loved
2019-08-29 06:08:36 PM donna61 nice ideas
2019-08-29 06:08:41 PM virginiamooney (y)
2019-08-29 06:08:46 PM briannad delicous
2019-08-29 06:08:58 PM raninjnj the cowboy hats were from amazom all diffrent colors i got 24 for 18 $
2019-08-29 06:09:17 PM briannad that is a good deal
2019-08-29 06:09:20 PM karlyz we are getting ready to do Rosie the Riveter photobooth
2019-08-29 06:09:27 PM kathyhughes So what do you all do
2019-08-29 06:09:31 PM dianep kyoung have you tried crockpot dump cakes? My residents love to make and there super easy
2019-08-29 06:09:35 PM kathyhughes for Apple celebrations?
2019-08-29 06:10:03 PM briannad we do apple painting
2019-08-29 06:10:05 PM kyoung Does anybody know where I can find and contact a certified senior fitness instructor? I've looked on ACE but I can't find where to actually get in contact with them
2019-08-29 06:10:08 PM donna61 Hey how does the Rosie The Riveter booth work?
2019-08-29 06:10:19 PM kyoung I have not! but that sounds like a good idea!
2019-08-29 06:10:21 PM virginiamooney We're doing an apple cart! Hot and cold cider, apple juice, fresh apples, apple sauce :) And we are going to an orchard.
2019-08-29 06:10:38 PM dianep Going to a local orchard and picking some apples the making apple cresents
2019-08-29 06:10:44 PM briannad what is an apple cart
2019-08-29 06:10:59 PM kathyhughes I would call around to Senior Centers and might post on Craigslist in your area
2019-08-29 06:11:33 PM donna61 These are great ideas
2019-08-29 06:11:45 PM virginiamooney Just a fun room visit option. Decorate it with apples, load it up with foods and drinks and visit all the residents in their rooms and all the employees.
2019-08-29 06:12:04 PM briannad i like that
2019-08-29 06:12:07 PM karlyz I bought red polka dot headbands on amazon. We are using a yellow table cloth for the background. Construction paper for the "we can do it" part. We are having a labor day social with some fresh fruit, etc. and the photobooth is part of it. Our residents love to "be silly".
2019-08-29 06:12:15 PM kyoung I've posted on my facebook, I don't know how corporate would feel about craigslist though. I'll look in to the local senior centers and see if they can help me out
2019-08-29 06:12:19 PM kyoung Thanks Kathy!
2019-08-29 06:12:32 PM briannad i love that idea
2019-08-29 06:12:37 PM karlyz Oh and the blue button up shirt.
2019-08-29 06:12:43 PM kathyhughes Also don't forget your Library they have lots of contacts
2019-08-29 06:14:03 PM kathyhughes Do you take residents to local schools?
2019-08-29 06:14:35 PM donna61 the toastmasters meeting was very relaxing and informative
2019-08-29 06:14:39 PM briannad we usualy have the schools come to the faclity
2019-08-29 06:14:42 PM karlyz oh my Kathy, I should reach out and see if any schools are going to do Christmas plays (or something) and take them to see plays!!!
2019-08-29 06:14:51 PM karlyz What a great idea. The residents love kids !
2019-08-29 06:14:53 PM donna61 we do but not as much as we would like to
2019-08-29 06:15:08 PM dianep anyone seen the Git Up Challenge? A couple of our ACTS communities have posted videos
2019-08-29 06:15:22 PM kyoung we usually have the school kids come to us for our intergenerational programs. It's easier that way for us
2019-08-29 06:15:27 PM briannad what is that
2019-08-29 06:15:30 PM kathyhughes Good idea, we would take the residents once a month to our neighborhood school to spend the day with a class
2019-08-29 06:15:42 PM virginiamooney i love that idea!!!
2019-08-29 06:15:55 PM azhia1 that's a great idea!
2019-08-29 06:15:59 PM briannad that is a great idea
2019-08-29 06:16:43 PM raninjnj when we do the resident family meeting i do diffrent foods depending on the month like last month i i did ice cream social with srawberries bannanas ice cream and cream and chc sause sprinles Any ideas for september to go with apple ciderv
2019-08-29 06:16:45 PM dianep The Git Up Challenge is a line dance thats very popular. Check it out on youtube
2019-08-29 06:16:58 PM kathyhughes I am going to guess Donna that you will make a great Toastmaster!
2019-08-29 06:17:46 PM briannad unfortunaluly our resident can not do line dancing
2019-08-29 06:18:22 PM dianep Our one facility just had the residents watching staff and their kids
2019-08-29 06:18:27 PM donna61 thank you Kathy I really enjoy what Im doing and its an honor to be able to be part of the residents life
2019-08-29 06:18:36 PM kathyhughes But you could invent a line dance for folks in wheelchairs
2019-08-29 06:18:43 PM briannad that would be fun
2019-08-29 06:18:44 PM karlyz focus on their abilities not disabilities. OF course, residents can do line dancing. Just make it a seated version. Have volunteers help move the chairs ! MAke it a group activity !
2019-08-29 06:18:58 PM virginiamooney (L)
2019-08-29 06:19:14 PM dianep Sure! There are videos with residents using walkers too
2019-08-29 06:19:28 PM karlyz OR get staff involved too!!!!! Good team building/bonding exercise!
2019-08-29 06:19:31 PM donna61 Our residents are doing chair dancing with scarfs and lots of upper body movement
2019-08-29 06:19:39 PM kathyhughes If we could do square dancing with wheelchairs we can do that!
2019-08-29 06:20:35 PM kathyhughes and it sounds like a challenge!
2019-08-29 06:20:47 PM briannad we have a music therapist that comes in to do dancing with the residents
2019-08-29 06:21:03 PM dianep check it out- it looks really fun
2019-08-29 06:21:21 PM briannad i will have to ask my boss
2019-08-29 06:21:44 PM karlyz Hmm... has anyone done a "wheelchair wash". I really want to get the nursing staff involved... My idea was nursing transfers residents. And then activities department will literally do a carwash on all the wheelchairs. Soapy water. Rinse .. dry. etc
2019-08-29 06:21:47 PM kathyhughes We will check it out!!
2019-08-29 06:22:09 PM virginiamooney That sounds great
2019-08-29 06:22:19 PM kathyhughes Thats a good thought, but don't make a habit of it and it is an activity
2019-08-29 06:22:29 PM donna61 a professional came in ith a grant and the residents will be doing 2 proformances 1 onsite and the othe off site
2019-08-29 06:22:31 PM briannad that sounds like a good fundraising idea
2019-08-29 06:22:47 PM kathyhughes We did it once and then nursing and hoursekeeping felt that they did not have to do that
2019-08-29 06:23:43 PM karlyz No I was thinking twice a year maybe.... The chairs are so gross, im sure they never get cleaned or disinfected. We could just use wipes and spray and just clean what we can. But I wanted to make it more of a "carwash". I've been back and forth on it! HA
2019-08-29 06:24:02 PM raninjnj Yes than that will become activities responsibility cleaning WC
2019-08-29 06:24:10 PM dianep our floor techs wash down wheelchairs once a week
2019-08-29 06:24:24 PM donna61 once you start its yours
2019-08-29 06:24:45 PM raninjnj Yep LOL
2019-08-29 06:25:25 PM kyoung Most of my program participation is memory care. Almost none of the skilled nursing/LTC or assisted living residents every participate. How do I get them more excited or more wanting to participate? I've tried asking what they would want to do so I can add it as a program to get them involved but all I get are crickets...
2019-08-29 06:25:46 PM raninjnj Our night staff are supposed to clean them evry night
2019-08-29 06:26:46 PM briannad what about a book club
2019-08-29 06:27:15 PM virginiamooney I did an audio book club, but they all fell asleep. lol
2019-08-29 06:27:33 PM karlyz you know another thing I find to be gross are the "table numbers". I was thinking making an activity or 1:1 activity for a resident to clean those. I have a resident who just likes to do "jobs". She folds all the silverware and helps prepare stuff. She doesn't come to any activities.
2019-08-29 06:27:39 PM donna61 kyoung how about switching it around and have the residents help with the program set up maybe they can read and direct the program
2019-08-29 06:27:44 PM dianep kyoung- maybe try to combine an outing and let everyone get to know each other.
2019-08-29 06:27:46 PM karlyz Maybe I'm just a germ freak LOL
2019-08-29 06:27:59 PM kyoung Most of them don't even want to come out of their rooms
2019-08-29 06:28:06 PM raninjnj Give parties and giveaways and food everyone gets exited
2019-08-29 06:28:31 PM karlyz I have 15-20 people at all my activities. We have 4-6 a day
2019-08-29 06:28:46 PM briannad same
2019-08-29 06:28:49 PM raninjnj Me too
2019-08-29 06:28:50 PM kyoung Some of the LTC residents go out to lunch with me and we all have a great time but when it comes to joining a group program here they want nothing to do with it
2019-08-29 06:29:05 PM virginiamooney If you bribe them, they will come. lol
2019-08-29 06:29:05 PM donna61 intergrate
2019-08-29 06:29:18 PM donna61 lunch and the activity
2019-08-29 06:29:31 PM briannad good idea
2019-08-29 06:29:32 PM karlyz I keep wanting to do 4 solid groups a day to save time for other stuff, but there's just so many activities our residents want to do
2019-08-29 06:29:36 PM kyoung bribing might be my next option lol
2019-08-29 06:29:46 PM kathyhughes I started by asking them what they did in the Fall with their families
2019-08-29 06:30:07 PM donna61 Reminisce
2019-08-29 06:30:13 PM kathyhughes That way you can learn what they enjoy
2019-08-29 06:30:25 PM virginiamooney (y)
2019-08-29 06:30:33 PM briannad our bigest thing in the fall is the halloween costume contest
2019-08-29 06:31:08 PM raninjnj Pumpkin painting contest
2019-08-29 06:31:30 PM briannad our residents love that
2019-08-29 06:31:32 PM kathyhughes Yes, but if you are looking for residents to participate more you have to find out what they used to do
2019-08-29 06:31:49 PM kyoung I do an assessment upon admission and we talk about what they liked to do in the past and what they did before they came here but when I add it as a program...nothing. We've also done a reminiscing program where we listen to old songs or watch clips from their favorite shows, still no LTC participation
2019-08-29 06:31:51 PM briannad that is true
2019-08-29 06:32:03 PM dianep I got some of my AL residents together to back cookies for the Skilled center- we then all went over and handed out cookies. Once they seen how happy it made them the residents decided to keep doing it. We now go on outing together
2019-08-29 06:32:41 PM briannad that is a great idea
2019-08-29 06:32:45 PM virginiamooney awesome
2019-08-29 06:32:46 PM donna61 nice
2019-08-29 06:33:18 PM donna61 Look outside the box
2019-08-29 06:33:26 PM kathyhughes Once you find out what a resident liked to do you can have that person plan the activity with you and name the program after that resident
2019-08-29 06:33:43 PM donna61 I like that Kathy
2019-08-29 06:33:44 PM kathyhughes have that resident make invitiations to her/his program
2019-08-29 06:33:56 PM kyoung I like that idea Kathy
2019-08-29 06:33:56 PM virginiamooney neat!
2019-08-29 06:33:59 PM briannad i love that idea
2019-08-29 06:34:14 PM kyoung I'll give it a try!
2019-08-29 06:34:17 PM kathyhughes And the other residents have to RSVP to that resident
2019-08-29 06:34:30 PM kathyhughes and that resident is in charge of the program
2019-08-29 06:34:33 PM donna61 Think positive
2019-08-29 06:34:34 PM briannad cute
2019-08-29 06:34:47 PM donna61 exactly
2019-08-29 06:35:00 PM kyoung That could be really fun for them!
2019-08-29 06:35:13 PM dianep Thats the Montessori way :)
2019-08-29 06:35:48 PM kathyhughes Yes and it works for residents who complain that there is nothing to do
2019-08-29 06:35:59 PM karlyz My company requires that we do certain things every month. i have found that my residents don't enjoy health education. They are seniors and have lived this long. They don't really care about eating healthy, etc etc. Yet every Monday we have to offer a Wellness University. I struggle with making it "fun". I've tried turning it into trivia or true/false
2019-08-29 06:36:01 PM donna61 ha ha ha
2019-08-29 06:36:02 PM virginiamooney love it!
2019-08-29 06:36:46 PM kathyhughes Companies that do that do not realize that all activities need to be person centered and not company centered
2019-08-29 06:36:56 PM kathyhughes That drives me crazy
2019-08-29 06:37:02 PM briannad i agree
2019-08-29 06:37:32 PM raninjnj So True
2019-08-29 06:37:38 PM donna61 Completly agree
2019-08-29 06:37:50 PM kyoung It should always be person centered, I mean we are here for the residents and to help them stay active, not the company
2019-08-29 06:38:05 PM donna61 we are non for profit
2019-08-29 06:38:08 PM dianep Has been working great at our facility- I just recieved my Training Credential certificate as a Trainer in Montessori Inspired Lifestyle Motessori
2019-08-29 06:38:10 PM kathyhughes They fail to understand that all facilities are unique and have a diffeerent set of residents
2019-08-29 06:38:18 PM donna61 Our residents come 1st
2019-08-29 06:38:35 PM kathyhughes Thats great diane
2019-08-29 06:39:13 PM donna61 Congratulation! dianep
2019-08-29 06:39:15 PM karlyz We have to offer a set number of certain activities every week. Like they require there to be some sort of "mind game/cognitive activity" 5 days a week. Balance classes once a week. Health education every Monday. The list goes on. It makes it hard to do all the activities the residents want to do.
2019-08-29 06:39:21 PM briannad congrats
2019-08-29 06:39:25 PM dianep Thanks
2019-08-29 06:40:00 PM raninjnj Congrats Diane
2019-08-29 06:40:20 PM kyoung Congrats Diane!
2019-08-29 06:40:33 PM kathyhughes I agree with you Karly it is difficult...perhaps during Health Education you should warn them about the pitfalls of alcohol by having residents try some!!!
2019-08-29 06:40:45 PM dianep Thanks everyone :)
2019-08-29 06:41:22 PM briannad your welcome

2019-08-29 06:42:51 PM karlyz we started a men's club this month and it has been super successful so far. The men don't usually come to our daily activities. But a majority of them come to men's club now! We've done building bird houses, nerf gun shooting practice, DIY airplane throw (who can throw their plane the furthest), and watching a video on how the automobile has changed over the years
2019-08-29 06:43:05 PM virginiamooney enter the chat room
2019-08-29 06:43:43 PM raninjnj great idea is it weekiy
2019-08-29 06:43:45 PM briannad those a great ideas for mens club
2019-08-29 06:43:53 PM dianep Way to go!
2019-08-29 06:44:38 PM kathyhughes Thats great KAryl
2019-08-29 06:44:55 PM kathyhughes So how do your residents help out with activities?
2019-08-29 06:45:31 PM karlyz I think we are going to make it every Tuesday eventually. But we started with just twice a month. I bought a cheap target game from walmart: it gives each person 7 shots and it has different targets and tallies up the points for you! They loved it !
2019-08-29 06:45:47 PM donna61 left the chat room
2019-08-29 06:45:58 PM donna61 enter the chat room
2019-08-29 06:46:15 PM briannad that sounds like fun
2019-08-29 06:46:23 PM donna61 I like the mens group ideas will be using them
2019-08-29 06:46:28 PM donna61 Thank you
2019-08-29 06:46:52 PM dianep I have one that likes to cook so she chooses a recipe and we meet once a week for kitchen corner. She prints recipe for everyone and then assigns each participant a task to do. Everyone has a part in what we are cooking.
2019-08-29 06:47:19 PM briannad i like that idea
2019-08-29 06:47:34 PM virginiamooney Awe.. love it!
2019-08-29 06:47:57 PM karlyz My residents like to do the centerpieces for the dining room tables. One resident likes to "gather all the bingo cards and chips". One resident likes to sort everything. So at the end of any craft, she sorts and puts the materials away. Any cooking /food activity, the residents measure out the portions and basically cook it themselves. WE are there to supervise and assist.
2019-08-29 06:48:38 PM virginiamooney wow, thats great!
2019-08-29 06:48:38 PM donna61 very nice
2019-08-29 06:48:42 PM kyoung I will also be using the mens group idea. I currently have 2 men that join my programs - now i know what to do for the rest of them!
2019-08-29 06:49:04 PM briannad they help clean up with bingo, they assit with settintg the tables for lunch
2019-08-29 06:50:31 PM donna61 With staff we played 3 lies and 1 truth and it was really fun

2019-08-29 06:55:46 PM azhia1 definetly, it is important to take our residents outside. (when weather is good) because they get tired of the coldness inside the facility.
