2020-02-04 07:11:46 PM ruthknable I have a question, how do you all deal with the transition for a resident when they go from the main area to the memory specific unit. I have a couple ladies who are having a hard time with the move nad to be honest, management isn't helping because they are just telling them they are there temporarily so they keep looking to leave. This is really causing a problem. A lot of management doesn't have much dementia training and they aren't listening to the advice of our boss or us.
2020-02-04 07:11:52 PM rosed Greetings eveyone

2020-02-04 07:14:42 PM laurenjb We had to spend a lot more one on one time at first, then convinced the family that we needed to tell them the truth. once they know the truth and get over the initial anger, they all got better in memory care
2020-02-04 07:14:43 PM valeriepeace I agree. The small group would be best especially because they are already feeling confused and it would be less destracting.
2020-02-04 07:14:51 PM jenniferslockbower Hi Ruth, I also work on a memory care unit with a few newer residents recently relocated there. The adjustment is going to be hard, but I've tried to incorporate some of the things they used to enjoy doing before they were moved
2020-02-04 07:14:57 PM spankylee99 when our patients transfer from skiilled unit to LTC we have the resident ambassador do frequent visits to see how they are doing the SW is also involved, activities also will encourage them to partcicipatie in activities or provide 1-1 visits with them
2020-02-04 07:15:12 PM tiffym73 Good evening
2020-02-04 07:15:24 PM jessicabaucom Thanks for the ideas Ruth
2020-02-04 07:15:42 PM valeriepeace Music is the go too with dementia residents. It will calm the storm inside. I play piano and when any dementia behaviors happen, we go to the piano and it soothes the soul.
2020-02-04 07:15:45 PM michelep I agree serinamchwa
2020-02-04 07:15:52 PM ruthknable The dementia training comes from our training coordinator. We are strictly andAL so basically we do not need to have a social worker. But my boss is dementia trained adn I am a certified Dementia Practitioner. But by the time the residnet is moved, the damage has been done.
2020-02-04 07:16:13 PM jessicareger Music is great for dementia, as well as aroma therapy and hand massage
2020-02-04 07:16:25 PM michelep I agree jenniferslockbower!
2020-02-04 07:16:26 PM tanya1 I started printing our lg activity daily. As a remindered for all to see outside the activities door. this has done wonders, its in bold print. I seem like this is working great for attentance
2020-02-04 07:16:26 PM julielangenderfer Any kind of sensory programing
2020-02-04 07:16:32 PM ruthknable Kathy, is there a way to retrieve these chats later to re-read or possible print out? Such great input but it goes so fast.
2020-02-04 07:16:39 PM spankylee99 Most time they are naturally nerveous and worried about the move it is a change of new faces staff and other pateints so it will take some adjustment for them
2020-02-04 07:16:40 PM torijarrett enter the chat room
2020-02-04 07:16:46 PM jbar7729 scented cotton ball activity
2020-02-04 07:16:49 PM ibouchard keeping a steady and familiar routine is always good and benefits those residents and YOU when working with them, especially those with dementia
2020-02-04 07:17:04 PM kathyhughes good ideas
2020-02-04 07:17:13 PM tanya1 Thank you
2020-02-04 07:17:13 PM elaine Our staff development person, hospice staff, and family council have all provided training.
2020-02-04 07:17:18 PM sarahmarsh Scented cotton ball? What does this entail?
2020-02-04 07:17:21 PM valeriepeace Just holding the hand of a dementia resident calms them. Imagine being so confused about so many things and kindness is a language everyone understands.
2020-02-04 07:17:32 PM gayle78 Ruth, all we can do after a move is be there and encourage them to not lose their spirit and that they arent forgotten.Sometimes my day in the dementia unit is picking up the pieces after other staff have argued with them or told them they werent going home etc.Its all we can do.Be there.
2020-02-04 07:18:01 PM serinamcwha also, if they are sundowning, you want to increase activity in the morning to help them get through the rest of the day - like having music therapy and exercise right after breakfast helps them to have a better rest of the 'day
2020-02-04 07:18:13 PM jessicabaucom Does anyone have any good ideas that can work on someone that keeps forgetting that they already eaten meals?
2020-02-04 07:18:18 PM jbar7729 my residents with dementia enjoy musoc
2020-02-04 07:18:21 PM ruthknable Thank you all, great input, but the problem is they move them so fast in kind of a "dump and run" and take no time to integrate them into the facility. The problem is we can't be there 24/7 and the staff (who need the most training) are of no help really.
2020-02-04 07:18:32 PM sarahmarsh Anyone offer Music & Memory? or Talking Books?
2020-02-04 07:18:38 PM lissarobertson Where do you have activities? In a specific room just for activities or something that is more dual purpose. Ours are held in the dining room. Makes it difficult to start on time when it needs to be cleaned before we can bring in residents.
2020-02-04 07:18:38 PM tanya1 Yes
2020-02-04 07:18:39 PM jessicabaucom We do
2020-02-04 07:18:46 PM tiffanyd thats sad
2020-02-04 07:18:53 PM serinamcwha we do music and memory and order talking books from our talking book library for any residents interested
2020-02-04 07:19:05 PM michelep Sarahmarsh, we do Music $ Memory
2020-02-04 07:19:09 PM avaughn We have an Activity specific room that stores all of our craft supplies, books and such
2020-02-04 07:19:20 PM ibouchard having a kitchen sign with times of each meal next to a clock is helpful with those that forget if they have eaten...
2020-02-04 07:19:26 PM laurenjb Also trying to keep with their regular routine has helped a lot with one of our residents. she is a very late riser and stays up until 1am every night. when she first moved to our building we didn't know that and the staff were getting her up for breakfast every mornig, and she was horrible all day. Once we realized she didnt normally do breakfast and let her sleep in until around 10am she has been doing much better.
2020-02-04 07:19:34 PM serinamcwha we have several different rooms becuase our facility is large, and there is a dedicated space just for activities
2020-02-04 07:19:34 PM jbar7729 We have an activity room
2020-02-04 07:19:37 PM vgreen I have a resident that forgets she eats meals, so I give her bread, peanut butter and jelly to make her own sandwich, It makes her feeled more involved with her food and she stopps, until the next time.
2020-02-04 07:19:51 PM ruthknable We love music and memory at our place and us it a lot. We also have iPods for each dementia R to wear to help with agitation and times of them just wanting drown out the noise of allt he goings on. It also brings them back to a happier time.
2020-02-04 07:19:52 PM jenniferslockbower I know on our Alzheimer's and dementia unit, we have residents from early onset to late stage. You may need to vary the level of activity that you offer to appeal to all of the residents at different times. We do Music and memory and have had a wonderful response
2020-02-04 07:19:55 PM michelep We have an activity room but use the dining room and chapel area for activities
2020-02-04 07:20:02 PM laurenjb I have an activity room which is the other half of our living room

2020-02-04 07:20:16 PM valeriepeace We just bought my mother in law a large dementia clock that shows the date and time and year in large print. It helps her all day. I want to purchase one for our facility.
2020-02-04 07:20:27 PM jessicabaucom With us the resident is seen eating breatfast and lunch and supper but forgets not even hour later
2020-02-04 07:20:36 PM julielangenderfer But we also utilize the dining rooms
2020-02-04 07:20:44 PM ruthknable valerie, we have those and they are awesome!!!!!

2020-02-04 07:20:57 PM jessicareger I wish we had an activity room. We have a salon and a smaller multi-purpose room, but we can only fit a max of 5 residents in it
2020-02-04 07:20:58 PM jbar7729 same Julie
2020-02-04 07:20:58 PM tiffanyd i have an activity room/dinning room/and day rooms for are lower fun.
2020-02-04 07:20:59 PM serinamcwha i do, we also have SingFit
2020-02-04 07:21:02 PM laurenjb I keep small snacks ready, if they are hungry i never say no even if we just finished a meal 2 mins ago
2020-02-04 07:21:02 PM kathyhughes If they drink water it will fill them up and help with their hydration
2020-02-04 07:21:12 PM joannet enter the chat room
2020-02-04 07:21:13 PM sarahmarsh What is SingFit?
2020-02-04 07:21:14 PM ibouchard what's SingFit?
2020-02-04 07:21:17 PM valeriepeace Our dementia residents would walk out of the lunch room and return 5 minutes later and tell me they had not been fed. They couldn't distinguish if they were hungry or not.
2020-02-04 07:21:21 PM tiffym73 Old picture help sooth dementia peoplw as well
2020-02-04 07:21:24 PM jbar7729 whats singfit?
2020-02-04 07:21:26 PM tanya1 We have to use the dining rm. our activity rm isnt very big at all. enough for the workers, maybe 2 wheel chairs. Very sad, because we have stuff all over the building
2020-02-04 07:21:27 PM serinamcwha SingFit is a music therapy program - different from Music and Memory
2020-02-04 07:21:28 PM gayle78 We use every space available in the building.I like to switch it up.Soemtimes we are in our big common room soemtimes dining room sometimes we wander down to MDS.I make sure everyone is aware that activities can happen any place
2020-02-04 07:21:28 PM jessicabaucom yea we give snacks and everything too

2020-02-04 07:22:00 PM lissarobertson serinamcwha, what is SingFit?
2020-02-04 07:22:02 PM jessicareger weighted blankets are wonderful as well
2020-02-04 07:22:04 PM serinamcwha for groups, large and small at different cognitive levels and it incorporates trivia and movement for range of motion/exercise
2020-02-04 07:22:07 PM serinamcwha i highly recommend it
2020-02-04 07:22:08 PM sarahmarsh Our facility considered trying the Virtual Reality thing. Anyone tried this?
2020-02-04 07:22:16 PM ruthknable You are right Kathy and the hydration will help them think more clearly a lot of times. The first things we do when we see someone seeming more confused is make sure they are drinkign WATER.
2020-02-04 07:22:16 PM tanya1 I do too
2020-02-04 07:22:17 PM jessicabaucom yea the vr was a hit
2020-02-04 07:22:25 PM valeriepeace My mother in law told me she would wake in the middle of the night and not know what day it was and there the clock is glowing, with all the info she needs.
2020-02-04 07:22:32 PM tracichambers i have my own room too, but we do alot in the dining room. I've had fun doing bowling and playing corn hole with the residents.
2020-02-04 07:22:36 PM gayle78 They didnt like the VR.Some facilities swear by it
2020-02-04 07:22:55 PM jessicabaucom the vr we used was a mesume they went into
2020-02-04 07:23:05 PM jessicabaucom on the playstation
2020-02-04 07:23:06 PM jbar7729 Im thinking of throwing a senior olympic event .Doesn't anyone have any game suggestions?
2020-02-04 07:23:06 PM serinamcwha Music and Memory is not really music therapy as anyone can play a playlist on an ipod - no disrespect to the creater - i am a social worker too; MM serves well for residents who just want to listen to music - residents who are no longer able to get out of bed, 1:1 interaction
