2020-02-04 07:23:11 PM ibouchard Our music and memory program really helps in our LTC memory care community. I'm curious about this SingFit
2020-02-04 07:23:13 PM tiffanyd vr with my residents wouldnt work cause they get sick looking at a projector
2020-02-04 07:23:37 PM tracichambers my boss is checking out the music and memory, and is supposed to let me know soon about it.
2020-02-04 07:23:39 PM serinamcwha SingFit is great for groups, they do playlists that are genre, era specific, so you can customize it for your gruop
2020-02-04 07:23:52 PM serinamcwha if you want a real music therapy program, i would go with SingFit
2020-02-04 07:23:53 PM laurenjb How much is the SIngfit?
2020-02-04 07:23:53 PM ibouchard agreed, music and memory is not really music and memory BUT it definitely helps out a lot.
2020-02-04 07:23:57 PM valeriepeace Sing a Longs are fun! We do small groups. Before long the entire room is singing.
2020-02-04 07:24:03 PM ruthknable true serina. We have a music therapist that comes once a week adn that is an entirley different thing. very interractive and wonderful.
2020-02-04 07:24:05 PM spankylee99 Kathy what does the highlighted numbers on the calender under the time clock mean? hope this is not a silly ?
2020-02-04 07:24:07 PM gayle78 And I disagree..Music in any form is theraputic.I find it to be anyway. To each his own.
2020-02-04 07:24:14 PM tanya1 I agree
2020-02-04 07:24:22 PM sarahmarsh Name That Tune was a success
2020-02-04 07:24:23 PM serinamcwha I think initially it was around 2000 to start and get the training, and then we pay somethinhg like 200$ a month
2020-02-04 07:24:32 PM michelep www.singfit.com
2020-02-04 07:24:35 PM alexiew what do you use for music on name that tune?

2020-02-04 07:24:52 PM jbar7729 enter the chat room
2020-02-04 07:24:54 PM spankylee99 okay
2020-02-04 07:24:55 PM serinamcwha but they provide you with everything you need, and you don't even have to know how to sing because it will sing for you - the drawback is you will have to get a tablet on top of program
2020-02-04 07:24:59 PM serinamcwha it runs off of an app
2020-02-04 07:25:09 PM elaine When we did it they loved the passing the torch parade and bushing things with the broom.
2020-02-04 07:25:21 PM laurenjb My community is very tight fisted when it comes to funds so probably not gonna get that..........
2020-02-04 07:25:21 PM valeriepeace We just had our 70's Trivia and the female residents wore daisy headbands and the men wore tiedye headbands.. We broke off into 2 teams. They did so well.
2020-02-04 07:25:24 PM serinamcwha they send you all the playlists, they tell you exactly what you need to say to get the program started and include all the prompts adn questions, as well as the movements
2020-02-04 07:25:32 PM serinamcwha and provide you with some props, but not a lot
2020-02-04 07:25:37 PM sarahmarsh We did genres they were familiar with and we also actually found some videos on Youtube with old tv show theme songs. They enjoyed that one

2020-02-04 07:25:42 PM michelep That's pretty spendy! Our facility received a grant for the M&M program so we'll stick with that, lol
2020-02-04 07:25:43 PM serinamcwha it's mostly chair movements and singing.
2020-02-04 07:25:45 PM valeriepeace We also did name that tune of 70's hits
2020-02-04 07:25:51 PM jaimelalexander left the chat room

2020-02-04 07:30:15 PM joannet We started a new program at our community called Eldergrow. It is a mobile garden that the residents can do some planting and take care of the garden. An Eldergrow educator comes out the 1st and 3rd Sunday every month and she does educational activities as well as craft activities. The residents and staff take care of the garden in between times. I schedule residents to water the plants and clean up anything that needs to be cleaned. We just started it this weekend and the residents really enjoyed it.
2020-02-04 07:30:16 PM spankylee99 oh by the way Kathy Good to have you back on this chat forum
2020-02-04 07:30:18 PM sarahmarsh We did a modified game with 13 cases instead of 26. The offers from the banker were gift cardds and other prizes. There was a potential cash prize too of like 50$. We got "calls" from the banker on a cell phone. The cases we designed and put on the wall. I found 13 models (residents) and we had contestants.
2020-02-04 07:30:21 PM elaine We do Let's Make a Deal and they have a blast.

2020-02-04 07:32:01 PM valeriepeace Finish that line!
2020-02-04 07:32:04 PM vgreen We do not have a place to garden in this building, so I use a "greenhouse". We are planting tomorrow. It gives them an opportunity to actually see the plants grow.
2020-02-04 07:32:08 PM serinamcwha we got two eldergrow and two in2l large screens.
2020-02-04 07:32:08 PM ruthknable We've made our own "the price is right" and usually we use the prices from when they were young.

2020-02-04 07:39:25 PM ruthknable During the party, the one man said, if he's playing cornhole, where's his beer, so I got him one and he did better.
2020-02-04 07:39:27 PM jessicareger I have a community game night every other month as well. The residents have been loving having visitors come and play games with them. We play farkle, cribbage, yahtzee, and pinochole
2020-02-04 07:39:33 PM laurenjb We have one activity where the reisdents try to get the staff with beach balls, they all have fun and some even try way harder if they have a target that reponds lol
2020-02-04 07:39:37 PM tiffanyd corn hole is a good team game
2020-02-04 07:39:37 PM tanya1 Our boards flipp over and we can play tic tac toe
2020-02-04 07:39:55 PM jessicabaucom thats neat
2020-02-04 07:40:22 PM vgreen I have a toss across game we make x and o teams. Works really well with my non-verbal residents and those with limited mobility. They seem to follow what others are doing, like with bowling.
2020-02-04 07:40:28 PM tracichambers i havn't tried teams 0n corn hole yet, trying to get them used to tossing the bags.
2020-02-04 07:40:30 PM ibouchard i think i'll have to try to corn hole game....
2020-02-04 07:40:42 PM jessicareger that sounds really fun tanya1. we have so many residents with physical ailments its hard to do to many physical activities
2020-02-04 07:40:43 PM ruthknable The new think with my folks is Jenga. They love it.
2020-02-04 07:40:47 PM julielangenderfer look it up online! Its really easy.
2020-02-04 07:40:50 PM laurenjb we do bowling but its giant inflatable bowling they really enjoy that
2020-02-04 07:40:53 PM elaine They get competitive with corn hole.
2020-02-04 07:40:55 PM serinamcwha so many different kinds of corn hole/ bean bag toss - and you can find boards to match what the residents like
2020-02-04 07:41:04 PM jessicabaucom jenga can be used for crafts too
2020-02-04 07:41:05 PM julielangenderfer Our bowling are light plastic pins and bowling ball
2020-02-04 07:41:10 PM serinamcwha they are huge seahawk football fans, so we have a seahawk themed corn hole board
2020-02-04 07:41:11 PM kathyhughes We did dice bowling and made a bowling alley out of plywood and covered it with green felt..you can get the game on Amazon
2020-02-04 07:41:15 PM jessicabaucom same here julie
2020-02-04 07:41:19 PM ibouchard i like the idea of inflatable bowling...
2020-02-04 07:41:25 PM ruthknable Kathy I love that idea.
2020-02-04 07:41:26 PM kathyhughes No chasing pins and balls
2020-02-04 07:41:40 PM joannet I tied about 4 laundry baskets together and had the residents try to throw bean bags in it. the further the basket more the points
2020-02-04 07:41:42 PM tiffanyd we just started dice bowling it went ok
2020-02-04 07:41:46 PM kathyhughes And all residents could participate so we had a winter league
2020-02-04 07:42:06 PM tracichambers i was wondering about the giant ring toss i have seen in the magazines
2020-02-04 07:42:06 PM julielangenderfer I have a question about Week 5 Assignment #1. Do we print out or look at our facility's MDS initial assessment? Because I'm very confused and I know we didn't create one.
2020-02-04 07:42:20 PM laurenjb I have the giant ring toss they love it!
2020-02-04 07:42:22 PM lissarobertson kathyhughes, I love that idea. Setting up the pins was very tiring.
2020-02-04 07:42:23 PM tjsheerin Wii Bowling is the way to go
2020-02-04 07:42:28 PM rosed that's neat for our summer olympics games.
2020-02-04 07:42:37 PM tracichambers i don't know about the assignments yet
2020-02-04 07:42:50 PM tiffanyd we got a wii and they dont like it
2020-02-04 07:42:51 PM tracichambers i havn't got that far lol
2020-02-04 07:42:53 PM joannet I also have derby game basically its a dice game and they move their horse according to what they rolled
2020-02-04 07:42:54 PM julielangenderfer I try to get everything done early in the week.
2020-02-04 07:43:02 PM kathyhughes You use your Initial Activities Assessment, the MDS is a separate form. If you do not have one then you will need to make one
2020-02-04 07:43:08 PM tiffanyd technology is hard to introd
2020-02-04 07:43:26 PM jessicabaucom Our residents like uiseing the wii when we had it
2020-02-04 07:43:39 PM julielangenderfer Oh! Okay! Duh me. I understand now.
2020-02-04 07:43:39 PM jessicabaucom it had bowling and other games
2020-02-04 07:43:45 PM sarahmarsh Quick question on assessments. When interviewing a new admission, the top page has a list of different activities (gardening, reading, volunteering, etc), does anyone else have residents who answer those questions more like a Yes or No and not on a Current, Past, or Never response. Does that make sense?
2020-02-04 07:44:07 PM julielangenderfer Thanks Kathy!
2020-02-04 07:44:13 PM serinamcwha sarah i have the same issue with my assessment!
2020-02-04 07:44:38 PM jessicareger Yes it does sarahmarsh. My assements go along those lines constantly.
2020-02-04 07:44:41 PM laurenjb We ask the family to fill that out as past / current then have the resident do there own seperate one and compare
2020-02-04 07:44:41 PM michelep sarahmarsh, i would ask probing questions. Ok, so the assessment states that they like gardening..............what TYPE of gardening?
2020-02-04 07:44:42 PM sarahmarsh Or say woodworking. We don't generally offer woodworking but some have responded, "yes I'm willing to try"
2020-02-04 07:44:45 PM spankylee99 I am also responsibile for our staff retention program which is planning events for employee of the month and a whole lot more, some of the games mentioned here are some things i can doe for entertainments
2020-02-04 07:44:50 PM serinamcwha i usually put it into discussion form, as a way to engage them and converse with them
2020-02-04 07:45:04 PM michelep yes, serinamcwha!
2020-02-04 07:45:19 PM ruthknable we get that a lot Sarah. It depends on their ability. They may like the activity but not do it anymore. If they can answer well, I usually ask them would you still like to do that. If hte person cannot really tell me, i try to get family involved if they are and ask them.
2020-02-04 07:45:25 PM serinamcwha and then check off past, current, never based on my discussion with them and what they were interested in
2020-02-04 07:45:43 PM tracichambers yes, i get the family involved too if they can't answer
2020-02-04 07:45:43 PM julielangenderfer I usually have a discussion with them about their past and what their main interests are. OF course there are ones that we don't really offer at our facility
2020-02-04 07:45:50 PM laurenjb I also like to go back and do the packet over once they have been with us for a few weeks and are more comfortable with us.
2020-02-04 07:45:59 PM julielangenderfer Our Initial Assessment form is very simplistic. I want to add to it.
2020-02-04 07:46:02 PM ruthknable spankylee staff retention is a whole new can of worms that could fill it's on chat room time. We have that problema t my work.
2020-02-04 07:46:08 PM julielangenderfer Good thing thats the assignment. At least for the class haha
2020-02-04 07:46:29 PM rosed left the chat room
2020-02-04 07:46:33 PM serinamcwha staff retention is a nation wide crisis right now! :(
2020-02-04 07:46:42 PM julielangenderfer Oy it sure is
2020-02-04 07:46:49 PM lissarobertson Question: Are most of you already Activities Directors or Assistants or a totally different field wanting to get into Activities?
2020-02-04 07:46:50 PM serinamcwha so much money in our facility is being spent on agency staff becasue we can't keep staff
2020-02-04 07:46:55 PM tanya1 I started on my monthly calendar, a monthly discussion . talking about the previous month of activities. we had recently done, because its so fresh on their minds. i find out their loikes and theirs dislikes. this wqay, i continueing working on my calendar for the following yr.
2020-02-04 07:47:01 PM michelep from the social services point of view, the more info you can gather from the resident, the better staff can care for them
2020-02-04 07:47:04 PM tiffanyd im an assistant
2020-02-04 07:47:06 PM jessicabaucom assistants
2020-02-04 07:47:12 PM michelep lissarobertson, i'm in social services
2020-02-04 07:47:12 PM laurenjb I had 2 people walk out mid shift this week...:'(
2020-02-04 07:47:26 PM tjsheerin your telling me my place has be short staffed for three months
2020-02-04 07:47:27 PM joannet @serinamcwha- my community is the same way
2020-02-04 07:47:28 PM tracichambers ii'm the activity director at my site, but i don't have my certificate yet....
2020-02-04 07:47:31 PM ruthknable The nice thing about the assessment is if they don't offer it at yoru facility it could be somethig the R may want to do on their own. Sucha as gardening, etc. They can help the staff or in the courtyard. Give them purspoe.
2020-02-04 07:47:37 PM sarahmarsh Another example, my boss believes that while the resident is in our building (long term, rehab/short term), the response for cooking should be "past". However this past weekend I met with a new man and we spoke for almost an hour about cooking, homemade soups, his garden that he uses for his meals, etc. Of course he isn't tending to the garden while in our building, but he still enjoys it and talks about this hobbt
2020-02-04 07:47:51 PM julielangenderfer I was an assistant and then got promoted to Director
