2014-09-10 06:26:10 PM brycegray Karenr, that's a difficult spot to be in. Unfortunately, a common one for Activity Directors. Janicewatts has a great idea by asking for donations.

2014-09-10 06:28:39 PM janicewatts I raised money with a bake sale and took my residents on a boat ride. They loved it. I had the staff and families bake things, and the during the sale, I did not put a price on anything, just said to make a donation

2014-09-10 06:36:16 PM karenr How many points do we need to maintain this class and pass it.?
2014-09-10 06:36:39 PM karenr We have Whole Foods here
2014-09-10 06:36:41 PM brycegray Please ask questions! If you need anything that we did not cover already, I am happy to help look for it!
2014-09-10 06:36:51 PM janicewatts I will have to wait to copy the sights, cause it kicks me off
2014-09-10 06:37:29 PM brycegray Karenr, you will need to ask Kathy that question. It's been a while since i took the MEPAP certifications on this site and I am not sure how many points you need to pass
2014-09-10 06:37:37 PM karenr Is there a way to go back on a class and get the information that maybe you didnt get?
2014-09-10 06:37:44 PM janicewatts what about simple room to room activities
2014-09-10 06:37:45 PM karenr ok

2014-09-10 06:39:42 PM brycegray Another site for activity cart ideas: http://activitydirector.net/forum/topic/4048-activity-cart/
2014-09-10 06:39:46 PM janicewatts good. I have a 42 bed facility, and its only me doing activities. The building are split up, and I find it hard to get to everyone every day
2014-09-10 06:40:50 PM janicewatts what do you think I should do?
2014-09-10 06:41:55 PM karenr Ar
2014-09-10 06:42:30 PM janicewatts In the altzhimers unit, I play games, and music with them. I do some crafts, but that can be a challenge
2014-09-10 06:43:05 PM brycegray Try this janicewatts... Activity Boxes that can be used by all caregivers, volunteers and families. Easy and cheap (some can be made with items around your facility) to make: https://www.alz.org/georgia/documents/activity_boxes-gems_revised.pdf
2014-09-10 06:43:23 PM brycegray Those are perfect for dementia at various levels
2014-09-10 06:43:26 PM karenr are we expected to as Activity Directors be responsible for doing the calendars as well as news letters for the entire facility? I take all the pictures, do all the writing, and connect with everyone, however, my time with the people is less Any comments?
2014-09-10 06:44:44 PM brycegray In my experience, yes. HOWEVER, it sounds like you need volunteers to help you out.
2014-09-10 06:44:46 PM brycegray http://www.notjustbingo.com/articles-and-resources/how-to-articles/quality-volunteers.html
2014-09-10 06:45:07 PM janicewatts I will try that, Maybe, I won't feel so bad about not getting to everyone all the time
2014-09-10 06:45:07 PM karenr Can you tell me how to stay organized better with very little space. It is just me in a very small room and with a lot of stuff....
2014-09-10 06:46:16 PM brycegray Well, staying organized in activities is always difficult since we have SO MANY THINGS FOR SO MANY PEOPLE! :)
2014-09-10 06:46:52 PM karenr Amen... sometimes I am just running...all day with no breaks...
2014-09-10 06:47:04 PM brycegray I always try to designate 30 minutes a week to straigtening up and organizing (usually done on a friday). Sometimes that means me staying late :(
2014-09-10 06:47:15 PM janicewatts plastic tots, filing cabnit, and storage somewere else in the building that you can acess
2014-09-10 06:47:25 PM brycegray I also have TONS of bookshelves and floating shelves on the walls
2014-09-10 06:47:30 PM karenr Sorry... I am not complaining...just seeing if I am not alone. So this is helping me truely. Thank you.
2014-09-10 06:47:47 PM brycegray I agree that you should ask if there is a closet you could utilize/share
2014-09-10 06:48:41 PM janicewatts we have a garage on the assested living and I use a corner
2014-09-10 06:49:14 PM karenr Thank you
2014-09-10 06:49:49 PM janicewatts can we talk about the f tags. I will have state real soon, and I need to make sure I understand them
2014-09-10 06:50:49 PM brycegray State survey varies from state to state
2014-09-10 06:50:59 PM janicewatts Because I am not certified yet, will that make a difference
2014-09-10 06:51:13 PM brycegray Basically, make sure your notes/careplans are up to date
2014-09-10 06:52:04 PM janicewatts Ok, I do try to do that. I have been helped by the MDS nurse
2014-09-10 06:52:06 PM brycegray Make sure your activity calendar has a variety of activities for all types of resdients (men, women, younger resdidents, outings, etc...)
2014-09-10 06:52:25 PM brycegray Make sure you have good documentation for you 1:1s
2014-09-10 06:53:05 PM brycegray No it should not matter as your adminstrator's license should be covering you until you get certified. Just check with your administrator
2014-09-10 06:53:15 PM karenr What is that about? Please enlightening. The job was thrown on me without any training.... so, I paid for this class myself because I wanted to be protected and understand what everyone else knows. I was handed a calender 9 months ago and was told to make one and do it. I had to take this to try to find out exactly what i need to be doing... because I havent been trained formally.
2014-09-10 06:53:35 PM janicewatts do, I have to doc in the charts the 1-1's, or just mine
2014-09-10 06:54:57 PM karenr Sorry but what is 1:1's?
2014-09-10 06:55:26 PM brycegray I would document in your careplan that they are receiving 1:1s, comment/briefly describe the 1:1s in their progress notes, and then also keep more detailed information on the 1:1s (to yourself) in case the state surveyor has any questions
2014-09-10 06:55:50 PM brycegray 1:1s are for residents that are not attending large group activities
2014-09-10 06:56:22 PM janicewatts I do understand that, You will learn, you already have nine months, and they still have you in that place
2014-09-10 06:56:47 PM brycegray A typical goal for residents is to attend 3-5 activities a week. If they are not, you should have them on a 1:1 program. That means 1 resident to 1 staff member activites
2014-09-10 06:56:54 PM karenr Amen. I love my job... i just have to see what it is im responsible for????
2014-09-10 06:57:32 PM brycegray 1:1s are also appropraite for residents that have severe cognition, bed ridden, or on hospice
2014-09-10 06:58:00 PM janicewatts Ok, I do some of that on the back of my doc, but have not progressed it on the notes yet
2014-09-10 06:59:15 PM janicewatts I do them, inbetween the other acitivies that I do with groups
2014-09-10 06:59:17 PM brycegray Karenr, you are in month 1 of your MEPAP class. I promise you will learn a TON from this class and will feel more prepared and confident as an Activity Director
2014-09-10 06:59:17 PM karenr Do we have to document every resident on a daily basis?
2014-09-10 06:59:41 PM karenr Thank God.. and bless you :)
2014-09-10 07:00:23 PM brycegray I would, but I would check your state's requirements on documentation. I would ask your administrator for the specifics on your building. These are great questions for this person.
2014-09-10 07:00:50 PM janicewatts I was just promoted to director of the 20th of august.
2014-09-10 07:01:11 PM brycegray I am going to call it a wrap for tonight. I hope you both have a wonderful night!
2014-09-10 07:01:21 PM brycegray And congrats janicewatts!!!!!!!!!!
2014-09-10 07:02:05 PM janicewatts we just got a new adminst. She is just learning herself. I thing that the don and mds nurses know more then her right now
2014-09-10 07:02:13 PM karenr thank you so much!

2014-09-11 06:03:14 PM lizmacinnes Really? I didn't know that.
2014-09-11 06:03:55 PM danac why is that kathy
2014-09-11 06:04:03 PM kathyhughes if they have nothing to do they will check to see why and if the state surveyors are doing their job right
2014-09-11 06:04:04 PM lizmacinnes Our facility is rare. I'm not sure how long the feds will let us keep it open.
2014-09-11 06:04:09 PM dthompson Kathy - I am still missing grades from weeks 1 & 2 since I switched from the June class to the August class. Plus I believe that this is my fourth live discussion and I have not received any credit for them either.
2014-09-11 06:04:16 PM kathyhughes and its the gov.....they are just fab
2014-09-11 06:04:45 PM kathyhughes Hey Donna, you have to upload the missing assignments and I will check on the chats
2014-09-11 06:05:07 PM kathyhughes why is your facility rare?
2014-09-11 06:05:11 PM lizmacinnes I was happy to hear one of our surveyors say that he could never do what I do. Staying in a room with 21 residents 40 plus hours a week.

2014-09-11 06:06:34 PM lizmacinnes becuase we are a very old builing. It use to be a motel. Feds are trying to get rid of all the old facilities. Last Fed that came in which was last year after our survey told us we are one of the last ones.
2014-09-11 06:07:01 PM dthompson I didn't save any of the forum assignments
2014-09-11 06:07:07 PM kathyhughes I have been in your dilemma....
2014-09-11 06:07:10 PM danac our facility used to be a hospital about 50 ago years ago
2014-09-11 06:07:17 PM onelliaad that means the company will buy or relocate them in another biulding?
2014-09-11 06:07:32 PM kathyhughes No problem Donna...you can go back in and respond to the discussions that have happened
2014-09-11 06:07:44 PM lizmacinnes I'm hoping. Our company has a ton of facilites.
2014-09-11 06:07:47 PM kathyhughes we had to build a new facility
2014-09-11 06:08:09 PM dthompson Ok
2014-09-11 06:08:14 PM danac they are just remodeling ours completely
2014-09-11 06:08:34 PM kathyhughes Sorry
2014-09-11 06:08:44 PM anthonyalviar I'm always nervous when the survey team is in our facility
2014-09-11 06:08:50 PM kathyhughes thats the system that we have......I know it will take some time
2014-09-11 06:08:51 PM lizmacinnes Really? A new facility would be wonderful, but I don't think they would do that. They would probably move our residents into a larger facility and just make a locked memory care unit.
2014-09-11 06:08:56 PM kathyhughes Don't be nervous
2014-09-11 06:09:01 PM onelliaad oh my goodness, how much can be Kathy?
2014-09-11 06:09:19 PM anthonyalviar I feel like they always look on the bad side
2014-09-11 06:09:29 PM dthompson Our facility is very old and sits on 11 acres of prime real estate. When the owners retire I think they will get more for the land than the facility.
2014-09-11 06:09:35 PM kathyhughes remember that they are there for the residents
2014-09-11 06:09:46 PM lizmacinnes advocates for them
2014-09-11 06:09:48 PM kathyhughes one never knows.....
2014-09-11 06:10:09 PM anthonyalviar so far our last survey was good. we only had 4 deficiencies and none of them are in activities.
2014-09-11 06:10:09 PM kathyhughes they might keep it and build a continuing care facility
2014-09-11 06:10:26 PM kathyhughes then I wouldn't worry
2014-09-11 06:10:41 PM jackie3 enter the chat room
2014-09-11 06:10:47 PM dthompson It is zoned for up to a five story building - they could open an independent living facility too
2014-09-11 06:10:51 PM kathyhughes We would be happy with only 20 pages of deficencies
2014-09-11 06:10:59 PM lizmacinnes Kathy, did you send out at email this week?
2014-09-11 06:11:00 PM kathyhughes Hello Jackie

2014-09-11 06:11:38 PM kathyhughes In MEPAP2 the forums are limited...so there will be weeks where there isn't a forum

2014-09-11 06:12:36 PM anthonyalviar Assignments
2014-09-11 06:12:37 PM dthompson Gov reg with charting, care plans, progress notes there is almost no time for activities
2014-09-11 06:12:39 PM kathyhughes the practicum?

2014-09-11 06:13:09 PM kathyhughes so you might have different assignments
2014-09-11 06:13:14 PM lizmacinnes I have to do all of that and do activities 5 days a week with no assistant.

2014-09-11 06:14:22 PM lizmacinnes wow. How do you do it?
2014-09-11 06:14:24 PM onelliaad why you dont have an asistant?
2014-09-11 06:14:29 PM anthonyalviar 107 residents 125 beds
2014-09-11 06:14:47 PM jackie3 we have 176 residents and there is 4 of us...we are a skilled facilty
2014-09-11 06:14:55 PM kathyhughes I would hope that when you reach capacity you should have another staff person
2014-09-11 06:14:58 PM danac h about the Toastmasters meeting kathy I don't have one in my area but I am to a Jane Goodall lecture on Saturday does that count for public speaking group
2014-09-11 06:15:10 PM anthonyalviar thats awesome jackie
2014-09-11 06:15:18 PM lizmacinnes budget! That's what I'm told. There are assistants but they fill in for me on my days off

2014-09-11 06:15:31 PM kathyhughes You have to find a public speaking class Dana
2014-09-11 06:15:34 PM lizmacinnes No I rely on my CNAs
2014-09-11 06:15:45 PM kathyhughes Its about networking and communication
2014-09-11 06:15:56 PM dthompson Yes, Toastmasters meets every Monday. I will go this Monday
2014-09-11 06:15:56 PM kathyhughes I would check to see if there is one close
2014-09-11 06:16:06 PM anthonyalviar CNA's are my best friends in our facility
2014-09-11 06:16:22 PM wward enter the chat room

2014-09-11 06:16:54 PM kathyhughes Hello Wendy
2014-09-11 06:17:10 PM danac I have no idea where I'm going to go, I was thinking maybe a town council meeting but I guess that won't count either
2014-09-11 06:17:46 PM kathyhughes Check the local library or community college to see if they have a publis speaking class or group
2014-09-11 06:17:49 PM wward Hello Kathy and Everyone!
2014-09-11 06:17:57 PM onelliaad is not easy to have cna's involve in activities prog.
2014-09-11 06:18:09 PM onelliaad hi
2014-09-11 06:18:26 PM danac I've been looking but I can't really find anything
2014-09-11 06:18:28 PM dthompson The head of housekeeping helps with Bingo every Friday
2014-09-11 06:18:36 PM kathyhughes The CNA's have a very hard job and sometimes we have to think about what they really can do
2014-09-11 06:18:43 PM onelliaad what? you kidding me
2014-09-11 06:18:45 PM anthonyalviar I always give left over snacks to the CNA's so that will help me bring the resdients to the activity area.
2014-09-11 06:19:18 PM terridenisetyler enter the chat room
2014-09-11 06:19:20 PM kathyhughes thats great
2014-09-11 06:19:23 PM lisaturske For the most part none of the building staff assist with activities, with the exception of holiday parties, nursing home week and the like.
2014-09-11 06:19:23 PM kathyhughes Hello Terri
2014-09-11 06:19:29 PM terridenisetyler left the chat room
2014-09-11 06:19:31 PM anthonyalviar I'm still doing the assessmensts. It's good that we don't have any admission since monday
2014-09-11 06:19:33 PM onelliaad I order extra ice cream for cna's so they can help me sometimes
2014-09-11 06:19:37 PM lizmacinnes The CNA's get the brunt of verbal and physical abuse because theyre doing care.
2014-09-11 06:19:47 PM dthompson The CNAs are great at getting residents to the large activities
2014-09-11 06:19:56 PM kathyhughes You can have the assistants do the assessments
2014-09-11 06:19:56 PM danac guess my facility is very lucky. My department has 10 staff total including myself
2014-09-11 06:20:21 PM lizmacinnes None of my residents stay in their room during the day.
2014-09-11 06:20:24 PM lisaturske I agree the CNA's have a hard job. I couldn't do their job.
2014-09-11 06:20:34 PM jackie3 wow!!
2014-09-11 06:21:05 PM carolynlnig enter the chat room
2014-09-11 06:21:14 PM kathyhughes I think we have to consider that sometimes we expect a tad too much from staff, when we don't educate them on what we do
2014-09-11 06:21:18 PM kathyhughes Hello Carolyn
2014-09-11 06:21:40 PM carolynlnig Hello, and thank you for the greetings to all of us
2014-09-11 06:21:53 PM kathyhughes All I wanted was that the staff tell the residents what activities were going on next
2014-09-11 06:21:59 PM lisaturske I have 3 assistants. One is part time. I fel like we are so busy trying to meet everyone's needs - large groups, one one ones, small groups....I was just asked this week why I need 3 of us to work weekdays. I was floored! I can't imagine doing it with any less staff with all the requests made of us.
2014-09-11 06:22:10 PM lizmacinnes 2 CNA's on the first shift are also my assistants so they understand
2014-09-11 06:22:39 PM kathyhughes and its time to educate the staff all the staff
