2017-11-15 07:13:55 PM ruthiesister ok , there are a few different kinds of swingbed , in a hospital or ltc
2017-11-15 07:14:37 PM ruthiesister but both have the same goal it's meant for short term rehab , but in the hospital setting it is different
2017-11-15 07:15:10 PM edgarrod a swingbed is a unit that in stead of going to rehab the patient stays in hospital
2017-11-15 07:16:19 PM lynmyhre left the chat room
2017-11-15 07:16:34 PM brandie45 left the chat room
2017-11-15 07:16:36 PM ruthiesister will it is swingbed but it is in a hospital , but we can also do IV Antibact. or wound care . things that can take longer then say a knee or hip
2017-11-15 07:16:48 PM brandie45 enter the chat room
2017-11-15 07:17:07 PM ruthiesister does that makes since ,lol i feel like i might not have said it right

2017-11-15 07:17:43 PM lynmyhre Chat kicked me out...ugh. Hope I can catch up with what I missed in the past few minutes.
2017-11-15 07:17:49 PM ruthiesister but we still rehab them a long with medical care
2017-11-15 07:18:04 PM ruthiesister it's ok ,,
2017-11-15 07:18:18 PM ren so in a hosp setting you'd mostly work with patients 1:1?
2017-11-15 07:19:09 PM ruthiesister I do both , because as you all know it's not easy getting swb(swingbed) patients to join in activities
2017-11-15 07:19:35 PM lynmyhre I work in a skilled nursing facility and it sounds similar...but we send out people to wound care center for some things...but we have rehab in our building...and we have short and long term folks
2017-11-15 07:19:41 PM lindsaylu85 enter the chat room
2017-11-15 07:19:52 PM lindsaylu85 hi everyone
2017-11-15 07:20:10 PM ruthiesister I started something a 8 yrs ago with my patients i have a big solarium were i do activites and i ask my patients to join me for lunch and wat with them
2017-11-15 07:20:17 PM ruthiesister welcome
2017-11-15 07:20:26 PM lynmyhre I agree with the tough to get them engaged in activities...It is like they feel that being engaged is making some committment to stay, versus the reality that engagement can help them heal faster...

2017-11-15 07:22:58 PM danielles0127 Hi everyone!!!
2017-11-15 07:22:59 PM lindsaylu85 i always try to visit everyone that doesnt go to activities at least once a week for a min of 20 mins
2017-11-15 07:23:18 PM lynmyhre That is great Lindsay...how many folks to ya'll have?
2017-11-15 07:23:22 PM ruthiesister yes then they don't feel like your trying to get them to do something , and they open up more about their lives and activities
2017-11-15 07:23:24 PM lynmyhre We have about 140.
2017-11-15 07:23:42 PM lindsaylu85 we are a 72 bed but i only have 58 residents right now
2017-11-15 07:23:43 PM ruthiesister how many are in your swb
2017-11-15 07:24:11 PM edgarrod I had one man that refused to come out for activities
2017-11-15 07:24:12 PM lindsaylu85 and the ones that participate i do lunch talks as a group so i only have about 25 to visit a week
2017-11-15 07:24:15 PM lynmyhre Our Short Term Rehab has about 40 folks
2017-11-15 07:24:57 PM ruthiesister ok do your rehab people eat with everyone or do they have their own dinning rm
2017-11-15 07:25:19 PM lindsaylu85 with everyone, but most eat in their rooms
2017-11-15 07:25:21 PM lynmyhre They eat with others...but they have a separate 'day room'...some do eat there...
2017-11-15 07:26:07 PM danielles0127 I know someone that use to work at nursing home. She said for those that wouldnt come to activities they would make a cart to take for them to do something simple. Even if it was just that they loved to color they would send out coloring pages or even puzzle pages.
2017-11-15 07:26:30 PM ruthiesister it's hard when your swb people eat with everyone then they feel like they are just like everyone that lives there and it makes it tough
2017-11-15 07:26:35 PM lindsaylu85 ive been reachering the activities cart
2017-11-15 07:26:42 PM lindsaylu85 my problem is funding
2017-11-15 07:27:08 PM brandie45 I did an activity cart with very little money. It is so awesome
2017-11-15 07:27:17 PM ruthiesister ok ,, funding is tough but couple tips , use your community ,for thing you need
2017-11-15 07:27:21 PM lindsaylu85 our corperate office takes about 8 weeks to send me my money so i only get money everyother month and when it comes in it goes just as fast.
2017-11-15 07:27:23 PM lynmyhre Funding is always going to be an issue...
2017-11-15 07:27:30 PM edgarrod I , found out he was British so I started bringing him 4:00 tea and he open up
2017-11-15 07:27:46 PM danielles0127 Lindsaylu85, That is my issue right now. I do activities in an Adult day care.
2017-11-15 07:27:56 PM lindsaylu85 i always have coloring pages, word searches, cards, and things like that and drawing paper
2017-11-15 07:28:32 PM ren awesome edgerod, you found a way in!
2017-11-15 07:28:43 PM lynmyhre Watercolors can be inexpensive and can be used in fun and therapeutic ways. Lots of easy, fun art therapy type things online for watercolor.
2017-11-15 07:28:46 PM ruthiesister how many of you ask what they did before they came to you .. what groups or committees they might have been on
2017-11-15 07:29:11 PM lynmyhre It's part of our Initial Activity Assessment to ask that type of information.
2017-11-15 07:29:21 PM lindsaylu85 i have lots of water colors. my admin wanted to do an art class and thats what she told me to get so i got everything and then she never showed up
2017-11-15 07:29:33 PM lynmyhre I'm retired Air Force, so I always ask if they are veterans. That's sometimes a great way in...
2017-11-15 07:29:34 PM danielles0127 I have used the community this past few weeks. They were not really sure who we were, I think that is so sad. I have been talking with local busnesses to put together a Penny Auction
2017-11-15 07:29:36 PM lindsaylu85 on admission
2017-11-15 07:29:58 PM ruthiesister but how many of them tell you everything on that visit .. i learm more at lunch about my patient then i do at my assessment
2017-11-15 07:30:02 PM danielles0127 Have you thought about doing Seneory projects?
2017-11-15 07:30:04 PM lynmyhre lindsay...you can do it solo! Check out art therapy with watercolors online...lots of simple ideas.
2017-11-15 07:30:28 PM ruthiesister ok,,, lets stay one this chat pls
2017-11-15 07:30:29 PM brandie45 You have to think outside of the box and use what resources you have to get the activity cart going. For instance, have the residents fold their own clothes and towels. If fills two purposes and keeps them busy. I also have an iron and ironing board and they iron their own clothes. the ireon has no cord but they dont even realize it most of the time
2017-11-15 07:30:55 PM lindsaylu85 i break my visits up in three days. i have my mds, activities assessment, and the peli i have to do when they are admitted. so most of my residents cant answer that many questions in one setting.
2017-11-15 07:31:20 PM danielles0127 Ruthiesister: I am always out with my memebers at least half of the day. I help feed some of the members and talk with them. There history is amazing at times
2017-11-15 07:31:25 PM ruthiesister how much time do you leave for your assessment
2017-11-15 07:31:31 PM lynmyhre I agree, Ruth. My staff is good though...and I'm very grateful for them. They go in and do stay as long as they can doing the initial assesssment and sharing the info with me, then I follow-up and there are sort of two visits for one get to know you purpose...:)
2017-11-15 07:31:35 PM edgarrod Lindsay try Dominos there relatively cheep and everybody can count to six to play
2017-11-15 07:31:54 PM lindsaylu85 when i do my activities assessment i dont nessasary ask them the questions. i find that it works better if i get them through talking. they will give the info on their own if givin the chance
2017-11-15 07:32:10 PM lindsaylu85 they are on my list of things to buy
2017-11-15 07:33:03 PM ruthiesister your right i set a half hour for each new patient .and i go every morning and say hello and ask how there night was i want them to know i care about how there stay is and what i can do to make it better
2017-11-15 07:33:21 PM lynmyhre I think we do what lindsay is saying...no real time limit either, but of course...things do come up and time for assessment can naturally be limited.
2017-11-15 07:33:41 PM ruthiesister ok,, i have a tip
2017-11-15 07:33:57 PM ruthiesister i started a swb history book ,
2017-11-15 07:34:15 PM lindsaylu85 what is that
2017-11-15 07:34:26 PM ren what is that?
2017-11-15 07:34:41 PM lynmyhre I try to greet each new person for a couple days...and we do assign an Ambassador from the management team for each new admit. We bring them the packet (with a free haircut, all the info, activities brochure and calendar, etc). Then we keep in touch and visit during their stay...
2017-11-15 07:34:43 PM edgarrod whats that about
2017-11-15 07:34:44 PM ruthiesister when i talk with my patients i alway ask were there from and if they've live there thier hole life
2017-11-15 07:35:26 PM lindsaylu85 that is on my assessment.
2017-11-15 07:35:29 PM lynmyhre "History book"...is it something that is for Activities use or open for residents to read?
2017-11-15 07:35:49 PM ruthiesister and i tell them how i have been working on a book about the history of the area and if they would be willing to give be some of the things they have done or worked at or seen
2017-11-15 07:35:51 PM brandie45 I have families fill out a resdient profile before moving in so that I already have all that info when I do the one 2 one assesment
2017-11-15 07:36:39 PM lynmyhre Great idea Ruth!
2017-11-15 07:36:44 PM ren oooh I like that! That would work really well for our area
2017-11-15 07:37:12 PM ruthiesister you can use it for both that why i like it . because it get for my other patient i can bring up thing from way back , i have learn alot about our county and it help them open up . and it really helps when i have a patient with alz
2017-11-15 07:37:28 PM lindsaylu85 i have a binder that i keep with all of my assessments and notes from visiting residents. my admin is a strickler about me not being in my office so i work off a cart most of the day and done have time to chart while im at work so i made progress notes and when i stop and visit i write one for each resident
2017-11-15 07:37:56 PM danielles0127 Thats a great idea
2017-11-15 07:37:58 PM lindsaylu85 thats a fantastic idea ruth
2017-11-15 07:38:16 PM ruthiesister and i let them see what other people have wrote or what we have looked up and it gets them talking again about their lives
2017-11-15 07:38:26 PM lynmyhre I'd love to work on a cart, but can't count on my computer staying online...we have such crappy service sometimes. But I might try it...thanks for the idea.
2017-11-15 07:38:48 PM lindsaylu85 mines all papers.
2017-11-15 07:39:04 PM ruthiesister ok,,, beside a cart what else do you have for your swb people
2017-11-15 07:39:08 PM lindsaylu85 we have a desk top but i dont have time during the day to sit so i chart on my own time at home.
2017-11-15 07:39:23 PM edgarrod that sounds very efficient
2017-11-15 07:40:03 PM ruthiesister do you ask your swb people to help with planning activities for your ltc patients
2017-11-15 07:40:05 PM lindsaylu85 i have been putting in about 65 hours average a week and only get paid for 40.
2017-11-15 07:40:37 PM brandie45 lindsay stop doing that you are going to get burned out
2017-11-15 07:40:38 PM ruthiesister then you need to stop or they will never see that you don't have enough help or time
2017-11-15 07:40:45 PM lindsaylu85 i have 2 that will run an activity a week each. one does poker and one reads to the residents
2017-11-15 07:40:54 PM lynmyhre When we have a particularly open and engaged Swing Bed person (short term), I definitely pick their brain as to what they'd want to do...what ideas they have.
2017-11-15 07:41:27 PM ren yes, Lindsay that is way too much...
2017-11-15 07:41:34 PM ruthiesister i also have my swb patient help with out side projects ,. things that are going on in the community
2017-11-15 07:42:01 PM lindsaylu85 this past week i have been having one make paper hand turkeys for name tags for our holiday meal this weekend
