2014-02-24 07:06:33 PM jill88 I've found that simple card games like UNO using a card holder if the person has a hard time gripping the cards, works well for a participant I have that is like that. She also enjoys a dice game called shake and roll where they roll a pair of dice and turn over matching cards with pictures of each number, winner is whoever has all cards turned over first they love that one haha
2014-02-24 07:18:16 PM jill88 My problems seem to come when I'm trying to get group activites going with people who have different cognitve levels. I end up doing a few smaller activities, to accomdate the most people. Kickball and noodleball are really the only two games where alomost all of the participants can or will play...any ideas?
2014-02-24 07:25:02 PM jill88 opps just realized that I'm a few days early, never mind haha

2014-02-26 07:19:25 PM cchase yes
2014-02-26 07:19:27 PM cchase yes
2014-02-26 07:19:29 PM maria7 left the chat room
2014-02-26 07:19:36 PM ss1325 and these things slow down alz?
2014-02-26 07:19:37 PM cchase now your thinking!! :)

2014-02-26 07:19:49 PM olawaleajayi makes sense
2014-02-26 07:19:55 PM cchase good good
2014-02-26 07:20:11 PM janice13 it is like when you are learning you listen, read it and write it
2014-02-26 07:20:16 PM cchase yes shake it - give it variation
2014-02-26 07:20:41 PM bonnie1 got it!
2014-02-26 07:20:46 PM cchase do you really need to think when you brush your teeth
2014-02-26 07:20:51 PM olawaleajayi No
2014-02-26 07:20:55 PM nans not really

2014-02-26 07:21:00 PM ss1325 wait i don't understand... should i be having my residents do these things or should i be doing them?

2014-02-26 07:21:01 PM sbond108 try to get out of auto piolet mode
2014-02-26 07:21:14 PM janice13 I used to teach preschool and when teacher children to hold a pencil, you always put it in the middle to see what hand they would use
2014-02-26 07:21:17 PM annm211 but once alz has set in structure is more important, is that true?
2014-02-26 07:21:18 PM cchase no do not do things for them
2014-02-26 07:21:18 PM dawn6895 its automatic, so when you change hands or the way you do you have to think about it
2014-02-26 07:21:28 PM ss1325 i didn't say do things for them
2014-02-26 07:21:34 PM cchase we call that excess disability
2014-02-26 07:21:46 PM cchase when you do things they can do
2014-02-26 07:21:52 PM janice13 I had a resident that could not track objects so we put them in the middle and asked him to put them on the right or left
2014-02-26 07:21:53 PM sbond108 if you they dont use it they lose it - aways encourage them to as much as they can and try to take away what they already do
2014-02-26 07:21:54 PM ss1325 i didn't mean it like that
2014-02-26 07:22:16 PM cchase yes - use it or lose it!
2014-02-26 07:22:28 PM bonnie1 what causes a person to do something wild like eat a handful of puzzle pieces ?
2014-02-26 07:22:32 PM cchase anyone else??
2014-02-26 07:22:47 PM janice13 they might think it is something else
2014-02-26 07:22:58 PM elizabethwoosley they don't recognize them as puzzle pieces
2014-02-26 07:23:00 PM janice13 they remind them of something to eat such as pretzels
2014-02-26 07:23:01 PM nans like muscles dont exercise you lose the tone
2014-02-26 07:23:03 PM cchase they eat everything

2014-02-26 07:23:19 PM elizabethwoosley just like toddlers
2014-02-26 07:23:21 PM janice13 just like children they are learning again texture smell and taste
2014-02-26 07:23:25 PM cchase b/c they cannot tell any longer what is food and what is not
2014-02-26 07:23:30 PM jackie3 i encourage her to do it herself
2014-02-26 07:23:35 PM sbond108 misfires in the brain
2014-02-26 07:23:36 PM cchase no safety awareness
2014-02-26 07:23:40 PM ss1325 i was asking if we were talking about us brushing our teeth with our left hands to slow down alz or should a person who already has alz be doing this.... because i think it would be even more confusing to them
2014-02-26 07:23:41 PM janice13 true
2014-02-26 07:23:42 PM olawaleajayi probably helps challenge them if they tried something different than what they are used to
2014-02-26 07:23:51 PM janice13 you may need to use the large puzzles
2014-02-26 07:24:09 PM annm211 some still put them in their mouth
2014-02-26 07:24:16 PM cchase we were talking about things we can do ourselfs to prevent the onset of alz
2014-02-26 07:24:24 PM janice13 i find that the toddler size toy or blocks work best for the residents that have that issuse
2014-02-26 07:24:29 PM bonnie1 I had a lady do that and the nurses were freaking out. I just quitely asked her to spit the pieces out and I would give her some cookies. It worked.
2014-02-26 07:24:41 PM janice13 play get outside and breath the fresh air
2014-02-26 07:24:46 PM scalabrese it is sad but i think that the hardest part is when you see families in denial and then they get mad at everyone else bc they are not able to participate like they were once able too
2014-02-26 07:24:53 PM janice13 laugh and cry
2014-02-26 07:25:08 PM annm211 like when they disregard the diets
2014-02-26 07:25:12 PM cchase anyone know what redirection is??
2014-02-26 07:25:14 PM janice13 keep learning it helps promote growth in the brain cells
2014-02-26 07:25:17 PM nans families take it hard
2014-02-26 07:25:18 PM janice13 yes
2014-02-26 07:25:18 PM olawaleajayi Yes
2014-02-26 07:25:23 PM jackie3 yes
2014-02-26 07:25:23 PM annm211 yes
2014-02-26 07:25:24 PM nans yes
2014-02-26 07:25:25 PM dawn6895 yes
2014-02-26 07:25:26 PM lindayoung1964 yes
2014-02-26 07:25:27 PM ljeglum yes

2014-02-26 07:25:38 PM cchase anyone give me an example?
2014-02-26 07:25:40 PM lindayoung1964 works alot in early stages
2014-02-26 07:25:41 PM janice13 and for your self
2014-02-26 07:25:42 PM cchase how
2014-02-26 07:25:44 PM bonnie1 change what they are doing
2014-02-26 07:25:47 PM annm211 distraction
2014-02-26 07:25:49 PM cchase how
2014-02-26 07:26:08 PM olawaleajayi subtle communication and distraction
2014-02-26 07:26:08 PM bonnie1 simply change their attention
2014-02-26 07:26:12 PM nans change a subject
2014-02-26 07:26:13 PM cchase how
2014-02-26 07:26:16 PM janice13 instead of writing try recording your self instead, instead of a treadmill go outside and walk
2014-02-26 07:26:16 PM annm211 depends on what they need redirection from.. leaving the unit, eating something wrong
2014-02-26 07:26:20 PM lindayoung1964 talk to them get them intersted in something else other than what they are doing3
2014-02-26 07:26:23 PM bonnie1 listen to music
2014-02-26 07:26:25 PM sgentry try to take their mind off of what they are focusing on - one resident gets stuck on wanting to leave to catch the bus, so i often start a new conversation
