2020-09-17 06:47:09 PM cchase Older adults may have health problems that add difficulty to speaking and understanding. Be sure you consider the person's health before you engage in communication

2020-09-17 06:47:24 PM cchase For example, they may have hearing problems, speech problems, and memory loss. These factors complicate communication. And remember, chronological age is not always a true indicator of a person’s health

2020-09-17 06:48:49 PM cchase Be sure to evaluate the environment in which you are communicating, which might have an effect on hearing and speech problems. Is there any disturbing background noise? Are many people speaking in the same room? Is there any intrusive music? Are there any distractions that could affect your communication? Ask the older adult if the environment is comfortable for them. If you sense any disturbance, try to move to a more peaceful and quiet location

2020-09-17 06:50:13 PM mkundrod14 I even went as far as learning some sign language in order to speak to a resident of mine. Madison Kundrod
2020-09-17 06:50:17 PM cchase yes sarah correct
2020-09-17 06:50:31 PM cchase now that's cool Madison
2020-09-17 06:50:39 PM cchase Older adults may have trouble hearing. It is important to articulate your words and speak clearly. Direct your speech at the individual's face -- not to their side. Do not eat your words: move your mouth and pronounce each word carefully and precisely. When your tongue “dances” inside your mouth when you talk, you articulate more clearly. If your tongue “sleeps” and plays a passive role, you are more likely not articulating as well as you could
2020-09-17 06:50:43 PM nealeyjones in front of them yes but not down to them..eye contact

2020-09-17 06:51:57 PM smithtammyl we use a communication chart
2020-09-17 06:51:58 PM nealeyjones that sounds like a great idea
2020-09-17 06:51:59 PM cchase teach sign
2020-09-17 06:52:06 PM cchase use a communication chart
2020-09-17 06:52:07 PM kreese828 sbowles, I have them write on dry erase
2020-09-17 06:52:14 PM pjbell dry erase board
2020-09-17 06:52:16 PM angeldewitt we sometimes us white boards
2020-09-17 06:52:19 PM sbowles He cannot write
2020-09-17 06:52:21 PM mkundrod14 dry erase is a big hit for us as well
2020-09-17 06:52:27 PM cchase they like sign when they need to go to the bathroom
2020-09-17 06:52:32 PM eckhartdanielle One of my goals is to learn spanish. There's a great app called Duolingo and you learn different languages like a game!
2020-09-17 06:52:45 PM pjbell use pictures
2020-09-17 06:52:56 PM cchase for example - instead of speaking it - they rather sign and have the staff know that they need
2020-09-17 06:53:01 PM smithtammyl yes pictures are good
2020-09-17 06:53:15 PM aprilw i like the sign language class idea
2020-09-17 06:53:24 PM cchase learning languages is great too
2020-09-17 06:53:29 PM sbowles Pictures is a good idea. I would need to learn sign language and teach him then?
2020-09-17 06:53:46 PM cchase we all knew some basic signs - bathroom - drink of water
2020-09-17 06:53:52 PM cchase eat -
2020-09-17 06:54:10 PM kreese828 my residents make prayer hands for bible study lol
2020-09-17 06:54:11 PM cchase easy to learn - google - utube
2020-09-17 06:54:22 PM smithtammyl yes
2020-09-17 06:54:27 PM rachelordille yes
2020-09-17 06:54:32 PM angeldewitt i would love that
2020-09-17 06:54:36 PM cchase learn one sign per week
2020-09-17 06:54:49 PM sbowles Good idea.
2020-09-17 06:54:54 PM cchase that gives you time to practice it
2020-09-17 06:55:02 PM melaniekohler0122 lol
2020-09-17 06:55:03 PM angeldewitt great idea
2020-09-17 06:55:04 PM kreese828 I love that idea
2020-09-17 06:55:09 PM pjbell will give it a try
2020-09-17 06:55:14 PM cchase Adjust your volume appropriately
2020-09-17 06:55:22 PM smithtammyl its hard when they can not see well also
2020-09-17 06:55:33 PM cchase There is a difference between enunciating and talking loudly. Learn to adapt your voice to the needs of the individual. Evaluate the environment and how it relates to the person’s hearing abilities. Don't shout simply because the listener is older. Treat the individual with respect by articulating and speaking at a comfortable volume that is suitable for both of you
2020-09-17 06:56:03 PM kreese828 (y)
2020-09-17 06:56:06 PM cchase you can teach sign - right in hand to hand technique - so if they cannot see they can feel
2020-09-17 06:56:11 PM sarahwms absolutely! and always check to see if the resident has in their hearing aids (if they wear them)
2020-09-17 06:56:17 PM angeldewitt i always worry about privacy
2020-09-17 06:56:18 PM kaylazoccole yes some residents get angry when they feel you are yelling at them if they have good hearing- kayla zoccole
2020-09-17 06:56:28 PM cchase yes sarah that is a must
2020-09-17 06:56:29 PM smithtammyl agree
2020-09-17 06:56:44 PM cchase Use clear and precise questions and sentences
2020-09-17 06:56:55 PM kreese828 Kayla- I have a "work voice" and some residents yell at me lol
2020-09-17 06:57:03 PM cchase Do not hesitate to repeat or rephrase your sentences and questions if you sense there is an absence of comprehension. Complicated questions and sentences may confuse older adults who have short-term memory or hearing loss. Clear and precise constructions are easier to comprehend
2020-09-17 06:57:05 PM rachelordille good idea
2020-09-17 06:57:07 PM sbowles Most of ours are hard of hearing so we have the problem of them getting angry about shouting.
2020-09-17 06:57:32 PM smithtammyl yes this is true
2020-09-17 06:57:35 PM aprilw darn masks, really cuts into them reading our lips even!!
2020-09-17 06:57:40 PM angeldewitt sometimes I have to break things up for them
2020-09-17 06:57:45 PM smithtammyl I take my time with them
2020-09-17 06:57:47 PM pjbell i try to phrase questions in yes or no answers
2020-09-17 06:58:03 PM aprilw short simple questions
2020-09-17 06:58:11 PM rachelordille yes agreed it makes it easier to understand if you simplify your questions when talking to residents with short term memory
2020-09-17 06:58:14 PM nealeyjones left the chat room
2020-09-17 06:58:17 PM nealeyjones enter the chat room
2020-09-17 06:58:17 PM sbowles Yes, short simple questions work.
2020-09-17 06:58:18 PM sarahwms get the masks that have a clear acetate front in the mouth area
2020-09-17 06:58:18 PM cchase • Use direct questions: "Did you have soup for lunch?" "Did you have salad for lunch?" Instead of: "What did you have for lunch?" The more precise you are in your language, the less difficulty the elderly have in understanding
2020-09-17 06:58:52 PM cchase • Reduce the "noise" in your sentences and questions. Limit your sentences and questions to 20 words or less. Don't use slang or filler words and phrases. ("Like," "well," and "you know" are a few examples.) Keep your sentences brief and direct to the point.
2020-09-17 06:58:57 PM smithtammyl yes i have noticed this alot
2020-09-17 06:59:03 PM aprilw I'll have to look into that Sarah, thank you
2020-09-17 06:59:06 PM sarahwms alot of my AL and MC residents don't even remember eating lunch, much les WHAT they ate!
2020-09-17 06:59:36 PM cchase • Avoid the confusion of mixed ideas and questions. Try to define your ideas and questions logically.
2020-09-17 06:59:52 PM cchase If you mix ideas, it may be confusing for the older adult to understand. Express one idea and message at a time.
2020-09-17 07:00:10 PM melaniekohler0122 that is when I let them know they loved what they had for lunch cause I am normally with them AL D residents
2020-09-17 07:00:11 PM sarahwms stick to one topic at a time?
2020-09-17 07:00:20 PM cchase For example, "It is a good idea to call John, your brother. Later, we can call Susan, your sister." A more complicated construction would be: "I think we should call your brother, John, first, and then later we could call your sister, Susan."
2020-09-17 07:00:23 PM rachelordille yes
2020-09-17 07:00:36 PM sarahwms makes sense!
2020-09-17 07:00:41 PM pjbell ok
2020-09-17 07:00:45 PM sarahwms too much info at one time confuses them
2020-09-17 07:00:54 PM aprilw agreed
2020-09-17 07:00:59 PM sbowles They hate it when you ask them the MDS questions for section F.
2020-09-17 07:01:01 PM rachelordille makes sense
2020-09-17 07:01:03 PM cchase yes- they digest information slowly
2020-09-17 07:01:11 PM pjbell makes them angry and frustratated
2020-09-17 07:01:13 PM kaylazoccole got it-kayla zoccole
2020-09-17 07:01:17 PM mkundrod14 its more simplified
2020-09-17 07:01:17 PM kreese828 OMG that is so true sbowles
2020-09-17 07:01:18 PM cchase so you want to give them little bits at a time
2020-09-17 07:01:22 PM eckhartdanielle Communication itself is tricky. You have to hear and understand the speaker, and formulate a sensible response. Lots of questions require answers that overwhelm residents and leave them saying "I don't know" and getting frusterated. Keeping it simple is the best way to go.
2020-09-17 07:01:34 PM nealeyjones this makes alot of sense and i will work on my wording with my resdients
