2018-04-17 06:26:26 PM lisaad Sunshine2018 I had a resident like that once
2018-04-17 06:26:27 PM dmartin so I made her own plastic container with her name on it and counted out 25 chips the number of spaces on a bingo card and talked with my staff and told them
2018-04-17 06:26:27 PM kstarr There are BINGO cards out there that do not require poker chips, they have little plastic slides built into the card, it works really well with our memory care community
2018-04-17 06:26:31 PM kaylacanvin i bleach our bingo markers once a week
2018-04-17 06:26:34 PM trisha1903 Yes a doctors order but one time when we had a state survey one resident was interviewed saying he did have a manhattan before dinner, thank goodness it was well documented.

2018-04-17 06:27:30 PM kstarr @delanie... yeah, i tried printing out other themed bingo cards and using poker chips...and it did not go over so well.. they definitely preferred the other cards!
2018-04-17 06:27:31 PM kellyrulli All of our residents are allowed 12 oz of beer or 6 oz of wine unless the DR has reasin to say otherwise

2018-04-17 06:27:44 PM robertambadger i like the strawberry idea..thats so decadent
2018-04-17 06:27:47 PM patriciabates ours love to make chocolate cvers strawberries
2018-04-17 06:27:47 PM katherinemparmley we use bingo boards that have little slide downs
2018-04-17 06:28:07 PM elijahhanley55 thats deep katherine
2018-04-17 06:28:07 PM doreenschaffer I just started reading chapter 15 and I feel like it's talking to me directly. I'm finding it difficult being a "leader". My department is sonegative and my goal is to change that.
2018-04-17 06:28:10 PM kellyrulli Famous Faces Bingo, they loved it
2018-04-17 06:28:10 PM trisha1903 The sliding bingo cards I think are nice bu we have both with chips because of some of the residents eye sight
2018-04-17 06:28:19 PM dmartin Chocolate pretzel rods are a big hit however they are also a huge mess
2018-04-17 06:28:20 PM katherinemparmley oh isee
2018-04-17 06:28:24 PM doreenschaffer Even the volunteers are negative.

2018-04-17 06:28:38 PM dmartin what happened DOreen
2018-04-17 06:28:46 PM delanie02 How are they negative?
2018-04-17 06:28:48 PM lisaad I went to a AL that did lots of different kinds of Bingo like picture frame, postage stamp, 3 layer cake, and thought my residents would love it but they got way too confused and kept forgetting
2018-04-17 06:28:50 PM kstarr chocolate covered strawberries , we did that on valentines... it was a lot of fun! I had to keep running back to the microwave to keep the chocolate running. I also got little dried coconut flakes to sprinkle on the strawberries which adds a nice, fun, yummy extra step ;)
2018-04-17 06:28:51 PM wilmaholt we do not use the chips bc of the risk of residents eating one and choking...too risky
2018-04-17 06:28:51 PM wandellav left the chat room

2018-04-17 06:29:23 PM patriciabates We had our volunteer banquet last week we had 40 come to dinner
2018-04-17 06:29:24 PM wilmaholt we have the negativity at our facility as well
2018-04-17 06:29:27 PM doreenschaffer I don't know. The joke has always been that the activities is "poor white trash" (their words). I understand why they are saying it but it doesn't make it right.
2018-04-17 06:29:29 PM katherinemparmley allot of staff just isnt into the big picture of trying to make it a positive place
2018-04-17 06:29:30 PM kellyrulli I wont tolerate it
2018-04-17 06:29:41 PM nicoled i feel like that is all over unfortunatly
2018-04-17 06:29:45 PM sharlawoolley I want to try birthday bingo
2018-04-17 06:29:52 PM katherinemparmley what do you do to stop it?
2018-04-17 06:29:58 PM cindyloucattell Wow 40 volunteers how did you get so many
2018-04-17 06:30:04 PM kaylacanvin we can't find enough volunteers
2018-04-17 06:30:05 PM elijahhanley55 that is a nice turn out patricia
2018-04-17 06:30:06 PM kstarr I'm sorry to hear that. negativity breeds more negativity,. the only thing you can do is just lead by example and love.. and inspire those around you
2018-04-17 06:30:07 PM dmartin so make them an example blacken out the design they need so you can show it to everyone and ask them "what game are we playing right now ? throughout that particular game it has worked well for me at 3 facilities
2018-04-17 06:30:12 PM elijahhanley55 wow thats crazy
2018-04-17 06:30:23 PM delanie02 I think especially with volunteers they are negative just because they don't quite understand the enviornment if that makes sense?? they think everything is sad or a pity party. at least some of mine are that way.
2018-04-17 06:30:24 PM kellyrulli No matter what be positive and the positivety will follow
2018-04-17 06:30:25 PM nicoled kstarr agree totally
2018-04-17 06:30:26 PM kathyhughes You teach the staff what activities does and what they are responsible for
2018-04-17 06:30:26 PM dianep The staff I work with aren't so much negative but they just don't want to help with activities.
2018-04-17 06:30:30 PM elijahhanley55 that is so true kstarr
2018-04-17 06:30:34 PM wilmaholt we have problems with CNA's and a few nurses that feel they are above and can interrupt activity groups whenever
2018-04-17 06:30:36 PM kathyhughes and have them do an activity
2018-04-17 06:30:45 PM oliviabrokenshire Our volunteers are very helpful
2018-04-17 06:30:47 PM hbernath I have two new staff so training them has been a priority lately
2018-04-17 06:30:48 PM doreenschaffer In the VIVE video from CMS it clearly said that they the reason for the new regulations is to bring the activities to the same level playing field as other departments.
2018-04-17 06:30:50 PM patriciabates 40 is all that came we have more
2018-04-17 06:30:52 PM sunshine2018 I tried safari bingo and the residents said it took to long to find the animals LOL they like the original bingo
2018-04-17 06:30:53 PM katherinemparmley my staff is great its our cnas we have a high turnover and moral is just kinda down right now
2018-04-17 06:30:54 PM kstarr @delanie... do you do an onboarding /training with your volunteers? that could help with retention
2018-04-17 06:30:55 PM wandellav left the chat room
2018-04-17 06:31:03 PM sharlawoolley Find a close high school, college or church ask them for volunteers
2018-04-17 06:31:04 PM trisha1903 That is to bad about the negativity, I realize the nursing staff is stretched thin, but it is better for everyone to be on the same team especially for our residents.
2018-04-17 06:31:04 PM elijahhanley55 my staff is awesome but is the other depts that says teamwork but dont show it
2018-04-17 06:31:09 PM wandellav enter the chat room

2018-04-17 06:31:19 PM katherinemparmley we have been working with the marketing team and doing special things to try to boost morale of staff

2018-04-17 06:31:30 PM donna2018 @sharlawoolley - that is yummy!
2018-04-17 06:31:32 PM patriciabates we love our volunteers are great, they help us alot
2018-04-17 06:31:36 PM dmartin I find when some one is often negative it is because they cannot do what we are able to do try and teach them
2018-04-17 06:31:38 PM lisaad you can always chat about it to us, but keep smiling at them!
2018-04-17 06:31:39 PM kathyhughes they learned quick
2018-04-17 06:31:43 PM katherinemparmley oooh good idea everyone loves bingo
2018-04-17 06:31:43 PM trisha1903 I have a good activity staff, and volunteers
2018-04-17 06:31:46 PM kstarr also, finding them specific volunteer "jobs" or assign them a resident can help. and always follow up and discuss their experience...you have to do a lot of nurturing of the volunteer relationship on the front end...(ive noticed) it pays dividends though
2018-04-17 06:31:47 PM wilmaholt now I get the mean mug look
2018-04-17 06:31:53 PM sharlawoolley Advertise on social media for volunteers
2018-04-17 06:31:54 PM robertambadger When i am an AD..I will join in on the CNA training right from the beginning to share what we are all about
2018-04-17 06:31:55 PM elijahhanley55 wow kathy that just give me a idea
2018-04-17 06:32:05 PM delanie02 Kstarr- yes. Hard to put into words but they are almost negative because they think being in memory care is sad or something. When really, our residents are all very happy and we take great care of them.
2018-04-17 06:32:09 PM nicoled yeah, we do a training with staff, and have a video that our corporate created for the staff to watch and lead by example
2018-04-17 06:32:11 PM katherinemparmley i have my cna for 8years

2018-04-17 06:32:27 PM wilmaholt my activity staff is great its the surrounding departments that we do not have support from fully
2018-04-17 06:32:28 PM kaylacanvin i think our volunteers need dementia training too, i have one that isn't very nice

2018-04-17 06:33:33 PM sunshine2018 yes I think everyone should be educated regarding activities, they think its not their concern

We had a girlscout troop come in, and i had a 20 minute meeting with them before they came in to discuss what dementia is...and what activities do to help...and discuss memory loss. it was really good for them because they were better equiped to deal with the residents

2018-04-17 06:35:48 PM wilmaholt firing is always a last resort
2018-04-17 06:35:54 PM katherinemparmley i had a difficult assistant just put in her 2 weeks
2018-04-17 06:36:02 PM elijahhanley55 My staff was giving me that issue but i had to just keep encouraging them for their input on the calendar making
2018-04-17 06:36:03 PM kaylacanvin delanie02 we did that too...eeek that was horrible, i have a better understanding now
2018-04-17 06:36:08 PM doreenschaffer My volunteers are all mentally challenged. I'm still trying to figure out who can do what. I think tomorrow I'm going to start sitting with them one on one and getting a feel for what they are willing to do. Is that a good idea or are there other suggestions?
2018-04-17 06:36:09 PM katherinemparmley so now looking for someone else
2018-04-17 06:36:12 PM lisaad delanie02 what did you think about the dementia experience?
2018-04-17 06:36:17 PM dmartin I have and yet it continues when you work for such a huge corporation it is like you have to have excessive reasons for doing so
2018-04-17 06:36:19 PM kathyhughes We always avoid the conflict but once you have done it then you will feel better
2018-04-17 06:36:28 PM oliviabrokenshire I agree with that

2018-04-17 06:36:39 PM kstarr Does anyone have residents who have assigned "jobs" or "duties" within the community . DO they do these jobs every day? did you experience any resistence at first? I work in memory care with dementia, and I want to try it...but they are reluctant to change.
2018-04-17 06:36:41 PM kellyrulli We educate and to inservices, but we will have to fire if that doesnt work
2018-04-17 06:36:49 PM mayuridshah It is better to take a class for all volunteers.

2018-04-17 06:37:38 PM kristenamrein It takes a certain kind of person to work with the elderly.

2018-04-17 06:37:55 PM ahenwood We have a dementia resident who puts up daily menus for us. It is helpful and gives him a sense of belonging although sometimes he forgets to do one or something of that sort. But is makes him happy so we just help him as much as we can

2018-04-17 06:38:54 PM dmartin I told her it is not viable and we cannot use that as documentation it has to be witnessed by a staff member and the list is to be given by a staff member
2018-04-17 06:39:02 PM kaylacanvin wilmaholt, same here. they don't ever get through the process to help

2018-04-17 06:39:16 PM kathyhughes We also made collages for each resident with activities that they were interested in and we hung them in the residents rooms
2018-04-17 06:39:22 PM mayuridshah We keep all residents busy in some activity.
2018-04-17 06:39:23 PM feleciap18 but with the two of us we would like a part time person
