2018-01-08 07:00:05 PM melissaz Hello!
2018-01-08 07:00:11 PM kristenamrein I've been around my facility since I was 12 years old! My family started as residents so I was techincally a visitor, then everyone passed away when I was 14, and then I came back again as an intern in college in the Activities Department. After a year there, i left, and then about 2 years ago, I applied for the job I have now. Some of my coworkers even took care of my family!

2018-01-08 07:03:31 PM karynbrinkley Does anybody work in assisted living?
2018-01-08 07:03:33 PM kristenamrein I'm in NH, we've had record-breaking cold here!
2018-01-08 07:03:41 PM melissaz I am in Assisted Living and Memory Care.
2018-01-08 07:03:46 PM abanks nursing home
2018-01-08 07:03:52 PM karynbrinkley Great Melissa
2018-01-08 07:04:11 PM kristenamrein I work in a multi-level facility, but I have friends who work in Assisted Living, and I have also volunteered in Assisted Living
2018-01-08 07:04:18 PM karynbrinkley I have worked in every level of care and love them all. Do you have a favorite?
2018-01-08 07:04:37 PM ebroughton I am in multi level facility. AL/IL, memory care, behavioral, rehab, SNF
2018-01-08 07:04:48 PM karynbrinkley Nice
2018-01-08 07:04:52 PM ebroughton Memory care may be my favorite...but I love them all
2018-01-08 07:05:09 PM karynbrinkley Alot of places don't have a behavioral
2018-01-08 07:05:17 PM karynbrinkley I love that yours does
2018-01-08 07:05:28 PM melissaz I really enjoy both memory care and assisted living. I have not worked in other facilities. But I am very happy where I am.
2018-01-08 07:05:35 PM ebroughton Yes I do too. It's very interested. My youngest resident is 28 years old
2018-01-08 07:05:39 PM kristenamrein In my facility we have Rehabilitation, Independent, Assisted, and Nursing living options. I work with all 3 levels.
2018-01-08 07:05:44 PM ashleyam9438 enter the chat room
2018-01-08 07:06:03 PM kristenamrein *4 levels*
2018-01-08 07:06:35 PM karynbrinkley What do you know about assisted living?
2018-01-08 07:06:40 PM ashleyam9438 I work in a nurscing home which is long-term and short-term care!
2018-01-08 07:06:46 PM abanks we have 3 levels as well however i have always worked in the nuring home
2018-01-08 07:07:26 PM kristenamrein I know that the Assisted Living residents are kind of a cross between Nursing and Independent care. They like to do their own thing, but they need minimal assitance.
2018-01-08 07:07:47 PM ebroughton To me, assisted living is a step under independent. They may need some assistance with ADL's or possible have memory issues
2018-01-08 07:08:09 PM karynbrinkley True
2018-01-08 07:08:17 PM abanks we have alot of clients in assisted that should be in long term care however no beds
2018-01-08 07:08:33 PM abanks its sad really
2018-01-08 07:08:49 PM melissaz Sometimes they need minimal assistance, others need help with meds, dressing, and other cares. I have a number of people who have memory issues in assisted livingm but don't quite need to be in a memory care yet.
2018-01-08 07:08:56 PM karynbrinkley What are some of the biggest challenges of assisted living? That's def one, abanks.
2018-01-08 07:09:50 PM kristenamrein I would say one of the biggest challenges is planning activities that they want to attend that are not Bingo or Pokeno.
2018-01-08 07:10:06 PM karynbrinkley How can we get around that?
2018-01-08 07:10:08 PM ebroughton A big concern I see from an activities standpoint is that our assisted living gets grouped with independent living all the time. Residents in independent living are able to go out on outings and do high functioning activities that assisted living may not be able to.
2018-01-08 07:10:15 PM melissaz People living in Assisted Living that really need to be somewhere else. I have a number of families that "aren't ready" to move their loved on into memory care, even though that person would be much better off or much happier in memory care.
2018-01-08 07:10:41 PM karynbrinkley This is true
2018-01-08 07:10:52 PM melissaz Kristen, could your folks play other games that are kind of like gambling?
2018-01-08 07:11:05 PM karynbrinkley and there are loop holes that allow them to stay there.
2018-01-08 07:11:44 PM melissaz I know, but it's a tough spot to be in.
2018-01-08 07:11:52 PM abanks we have a wife who needs to care and her husband who does not however he is there as well as a social admission
2018-01-08 07:12:08 PM kristenamrein Probably, the problem is they would probably play those games all day long. We do have some that prefer to do other things as well, like exercise or movies.
2018-01-08 07:12:30 PM ashleyam9438 I think that assisted living residents have a little for " freedom", and a resident at my nurcing home. their living enviroments appear to look more like a hotel vs a home with many rooms and med carts out in the hall

2018-01-08 07:27:37 PM ashleyam9438 jewerly that we get donated or from the craft store- dollar bills, we useto do scratch offs! now we have this new sysem where you can get a fake dollar bill, and when we have our dollar store they can use their fake money on items there too

2018-01-08 07:28:15 PM ashleyam9438 but it kinda backfired on the idea of raising money through the dollar store because the residents rack up their fake bills and wait everymonth to spend it on chips aha

2018-01-08 07:30:34 PM melissaz Nice! I bet that leads to interesting converstations
2018-01-08 07:30:41 PM ebroughton I really feel for my AL residents. They have a bus outing 1x per week (on saturdays). My facility requires a CNA to go with them, but every saturday they are short staffed and cancel it. Nursing refuses to allow me to change the day. I am tempted to just take it off the calendar because I think seeing it dissapoints them, but they love it so much. Anyone else have difficulties with other departments?
