2018-01-08 07:30:53 PM melissaz That is awesome Karyn!
2018-01-08 07:31:07 PM karynbrinkley TY
2018-01-08 07:31:22 PM karynbrinkley ebroughton, could you do the outings on another day?
2018-01-08 07:31:45 PM ebroughton I've suggested that, nursing says no.
2018-01-08 07:32:03 PM melissaz Could your ED help?
2018-01-08 07:32:45 PM abanks thas dissapointing...... ya know they hardly ask for anything :(
2018-01-08 07:32:47 PM ebroughton I may have to get him involved. I don't want to step on peoples toes, but the residents truly love it and look forward to it. It breaks their heart every week when it is cancelled
2018-01-08 07:32:55 PM scchavez left the chat room
2018-01-08 07:33:30 PM karynbrinkley I would get him involved
2018-01-08 07:33:49 PM karynbrinkley It could get the community in trouble if somebody called the ombudsman etc...
2018-01-08 07:34:10 PM karynbrinkley bad for business as well
2018-01-08 07:34:23 PM melissaz I would talk to the ED about it. If the residents want it, then they should help you find a way to make it happen. Out of curiosity, why does a CNA have to be on the bus? We only occasionally have one on and that is when we need extra help due to mobility issues or memory care residents.
2018-01-08 07:34:27 PM karynbrinkley I believe we should do what we say we are going to do
2018-01-08 07:35:04 PM ebroughton Since my facility is so many levels, we just say a
2018-01-08 07:35:19 PM melissaz Do you have a sign up list?
2018-01-08 07:35:19 PM ebroughton CNA has to come as a general rule. Unless they are Independent.
2018-01-08 07:35:39 PM melissaz Where do you usually go for the Saturday outing?
2018-01-08 07:35:53 PM ebroughton Its just a bus adventure. We just drive around.
2018-01-08 07:36:38 PM abanks awwwwww they would really look forward to that
2018-01-08 07:36:54 PM karynbrinkley It's nice to get out
2018-01-08 07:36:57 PM abanks left the chat room
2018-01-08 07:37:29 PM karynbrinkley and important
2018-01-08 07:37:33 PM melissaz In my opinion, if you are going for a Saturday drive with no actual desination, and you do not get off the bus. You should not need a CNA on the bus with you, just another person to be with the residents while you or the driver. But it's just my opinion and I don't know the full situation.
2018-01-08 07:37:44 PM karynbrinkley I would def talk to the ED but go with solutions
2018-01-08 07:37:50 PM karynbrinkley ideas
2018-01-08 07:38:20 PM ebroughton I agree Melissa, maybe that is something we can look at modifying the policy. It was policy before I started.
2018-01-08 07:38:30 PM karynbrinkley I agree as well
2018-01-08 07:38:52 PM melissaz that last line of mine didn't make much sense... I mean to say, that someone nursing or activities should be in the bus with the residents in addition to the driver.
2018-01-08 07:39:04 PM ebroughton Haha I knew what you meant!
2018-01-08 07:39:13 PM melissaz hahah oh good!
2018-01-08 07:39:18 PM melissaz Do you drive your bus?
2018-01-08 07:39:19 PM karynbrinkley It could be their policy but maybe a cna who is part time may want to come in on Saturday just for the outing.
2018-01-08 07:39:46 PM karynbrinkley Or you could take the CNA class and that would remedy that.
2018-01-08 07:39:52 PM ebroughton I don't drive the bus. We have 2 bus drivers. One is off for a few months to have surgery so we had to train an activity aide to become a driver.
2018-01-08 07:40:04 PM ebroughton Ooooh thats a good idea Karyn, never thought of that
2018-01-08 07:40:58 PM melissaz That is a really good idea Karyn! If you had your CNA then you really would be covered!
2018-01-08 07:41:02 PM karynbrinkley I am always looking for ways to make things better
2018-01-08 07:41:06 PM karynbrinkley ty
2018-01-08 07:41:30 PM karynbrinkley and it would be one more thing under your belt
2018-01-08 07:43:15 PM karynbrinkley Do you guys carry DNR's on outings?
2018-01-08 07:43:39 PM melissaz No when we are on outings all residents are full code.
2018-01-08 07:44:18 PM karynbrinkley I only worked one place that required that.
2018-01-08 07:44:31 PM melissaz How would you keep that secure on the bus?
2018-01-08 07:44:34 PM sylmat6 enter the chat room
2018-01-08 07:44:48 PM ebroughton We take all that info in a binder on our outings
2018-01-08 07:44:49 PM ashleyam9438 whats a dnr ? lol
2018-01-08 07:45:00 PM ebroughton do not resesistate
2018-01-08 07:46:33 PM karynbrinkley What kinds of things do you have planned for this month?
2018-01-08 07:47:14 PM melissaz We have a Therapy Dog Show coming up.
2018-01-08 07:47:19 PM ebroughton This was a pretty slow month after the holidays. We had a New Years Day party, and a trivia day.
2018-01-08 07:47:34 PM ebroughton Therapy Dog Show?? Sounds so fun! Tell us more
2018-01-08 07:47:48 PM karynbrinkley it does
2018-01-08 07:47:54 PM ashleyam9438 We have our monthly supper club residents look forward too bc our kitchen isn't always the best! lol
2018-01-08 07:47:56 PM kristenamrein Our department is going through lots of changes right now, so we are adding lots of new programs! We just started one for our lower-functioning residents in the morning that they seem to like.
2018-01-08 07:48:35 PM karynbrinkley what did you add?
2018-01-08 07:48:52 PM karynbrinkley I also love the supper club. Are families invited?
2018-01-08 07:49:06 PM karynbrinkley What types of meals and do residents choose?
2018-01-08 07:49:13 PM karynbrinkley I like themed meals too
2018-01-08 07:49:23 PM kristenamrein It's called "Morning Round Up" where we take some of our sensory friends and we play music with them, give them sensory blankets, toss a ball around, etc.
2018-01-08 07:49:26 PM ebroughton Someone suggested that we should do family theme nights
2018-01-08 07:49:27 PM melissaz I've got three teams of therapy dogs, that's one handler and one dog per team. They are all going to get about 20 mins to talk about how they got into therapy dog volunteering, stories about their dog, and maybe a couple of tricks before walking the dog around the room for residents to pet them.
2018-01-08 07:49:42 PM sylmat6 I finanlly got in,lol When we go out on outings i do take copies of status code. This month I will the director of therapy speak to our residents about how to live the arthritis. I am a little slow here, lol
2018-01-08 07:49:58 PM ebroughton I may have to steal that idea Melissa. My residents LOVE animals
2018-01-08 07:50:23 PM melissaz Please do! Do you currently have therapy dogs in your facility or are you looking for some?
2018-01-08 07:50:32 PM karynbrinkley Great idea about the dog stories
2018-01-08 07:50:54 PM melissaz Thanks!
2018-01-08 07:51:03 PM karynbrinkley We have a trainer who goes room to room with all different types of dogs.
2018-01-08 07:51:13 PM ebroughton I had an employee who had a therapy dog that she would bring on Wednesday. She recently moved on to another job and so I am looking for new therapy animals. Not sure where to start though.
2018-01-08 07:51:48 PM melissaz Look up Therapy Dog International. They are based in New Jersey, but have people volunteering for them all over the country.
2018-01-08 07:51:54 PM abanks enter the chat room
2018-01-08 07:52:00 PM ebroughton Awesome, I will do that
2018-01-08 07:52:06 PM melissaz There are more therapy dogs out there than you think!
2018-01-08 07:52:11 PM abanks uuuuuggghhhh i was booted out!
2018-01-08 07:52:30 PM sylmat6 We used to have therpay dogs before but previous adm. stopped that. Residents sreally enjoy that so i will be asking to bring them again.
2018-01-08 07:52:33 PM abanks back now, had to shut evrything down and log back on!
2018-01-08 07:52:50 PM karynbrinkley it's ok abanks
2018-01-08 07:53:14 PM sylmat6 Since we are in the hill country, The San Antonio Rodeo will start next month and calvary stops by facility for chili on their way to Rodeo
2018-01-08 07:53:24 PM sylmat6 Residents love lhorses here!!
2018-01-08 07:53:30 PM abanks we have a obeidance school for dogs and they come in for dog therapy
2018-01-08 07:53:36 PM melissaz That sounds like so much fun!
2018-01-08 07:53:40 PM karynbrinkley That's really cool
2018-01-08 07:53:49 PM karynbrinkley LOve the rodeo and horse idea too
2018-01-08 07:53:58 PM karynbrinkley Do horses come by the community?
2018-01-08 07:54:20 PM abanks one of our facilities just got a pet cat!!!!
2018-01-08 07:54:22 PM karynbrinkley We have an Arizona community with a stable and they have equine therapy.
2018-01-08 07:54:50 PM ashleyam9438 The room we use in small to host the dinner. We can fit between 14-16 of the residents. Famlies are not welcomed but you always have that one family member who finds their way in! We have the residents vote during resident counsile each month if they would like take out or what theme they want for the following month! for labor day I threw a big bbq where my parents came in to help host, and my dad flipped burgers with me so they could smell it cooking through the window so that defiently helps enhance the ecperience for them! a few months ago we did a big pasta night, but i had a few of the high functioning residents help me roll meatballs and the kitche
2018-01-08 07:55:00 PM karynbrinkley The horse walk insode a cobblestone court yard and you cna hear them coming
2018-01-08 07:55:17 PM ashleyam9438 it was funnybecause the two italians started to fight over how much breadcrumbs needed to go into the mixture
2018-01-08 07:55:19 PM ebroughton I've looked up some places in Arizona with equine therapy, my residents love that. Haven't been able to set anything up yet.
2018-01-08 07:55:28 PM abanks clients that never come out of there rooms in months come out now to see the kitty
2018-01-08 07:55:48 PM karynbrinkley typos sorry
2018-01-08 07:55:59 PM melissaz That is awesome abanks! Has anyone ever had a traveling petting zoo come to your facilities?
2018-01-08 07:56:00 PM sylmat6 yes,, The group rides for miles and stop here for lunch. Horses are fed. Last year, one of our residents got upset because we would't let her get on one. But is really fun
2018-01-08 07:56:04 PM karynbrinkley awwww, sweet abanks
2018-01-08 07:56:12 PM ebroughton We used to. Residents liked it alot
2018-01-08 07:56:29 PM karynbrinkley That is a great idea that they just stop by
2018-01-08 07:56:50 PM melissaz I want to bring one in but I'm pretty sure my maintenance director would be against it. Maybe I should try for it anyways.
2018-01-08 07:57:07 PM abanks love that idea
2018-01-08 07:57:35 PM abanks might not go over so well in the city!
2018-01-08 07:57:36 PM karynbrinkley We have three minutes left. Does anybody have questions etc...
2018-01-08 07:57:43 PM karynbrinkley true abanks
2018-01-08 07:57:50 PM melissaz that is true
2018-01-08 07:57:59 PM ebroughton none here. thanks everyone for all the good ideas
2018-01-08 07:58:10 PM melissaz All mine are taken care of :)
2018-01-08 07:58:17 PM abanks i have written down half a page of new ideas! thanks everyone....
2018-01-08 07:58:17 PM sylmat6 have have a resident cat for years. He started bring mice to one of the back doors, but for some reason he stopped doing that. The housekeeping dept would find them since that's where door is
2018-01-08 07:58:17 PM kristenamrein What would you suggest for getting more indpendents involved with activities?
2018-01-08 07:58:34 PM karynbrinkley awesome
2018-01-08 08:00:04 PM karynbrinkley Kristen, I would try to start an ambassador program and see what they are interested in. It could be a traveling choir visiting all levels of care. You could start a gardening club or cooking club. Maybe they prefer 1:1 and readinf to people. The sky is the limit.
2018-01-08 08:00:12 PM sylmat6 I really enjoyed this chat. Never done this, so I was kind of nerveous.
2018-01-08 08:00:14 PM ebroughton Goodnight! Thanks Karyn for leading
2018-01-08 08:00:39 PM karynbrinkley Thank you everyone. Great ideas and participation!!!
2018-01-08 08:00:44 PM melissaz Find out what they like to do and get them working! Have them help gather neighbors that need more help, or set up bingo, have them be incharge of the movies so they have to play the movie and pop the popcorn. They could be a New Resident Ambassador, and welcome the new folks. If they used to volutneer elsewhere, what did they do?
2018-01-08 08:01:05 PM abanks kristen i would meet with them, see what they would like to do, ask them for there input, we happy hr on friday aftenoons, more for the clients that have there minds, they enjoy chatting with the others
2018-01-08 08:01:15 PM karynbrinkley great feedback
2018-01-08 08:01:19 PM karynbrinkley love it
2018-01-08 08:01:33 PM melissaz I really liked this chat too! It was easy to keep up with and talk with everyone!
2018-01-08 08:01:40 PM abanks like a welcoming committee!
2018-01-08 08:01:47 PM karynbrinkley AWwww, great!

2018-01-08 08:02:32 PM melissaz I ask the new resident ambassador to also invite the new folks to dinner so they have someone to sit with rather than walking into the idning room alone.
2018-01-08 08:02:41 PM karynbrinkley Good Night

2018-01-17 07:06:28 PM ebroughton I am gonna guess that a swing bed is a unit that can have both skilled and non-skilled beds. Really not sure, we don't have them that I know of
2018-01-17 07:06:38 PM ren Swingbed, I kinda know
2018-01-17 07:06:39 PM sylmat6 same, i tested positive last week. had to be off from work

2018-01-17 07:08:23 PM jpocorello001 Im Jessica Yost in MEPAP-120517
2018-01-17 07:08:23 PM sylmat6 welll we have short term rehab in our facility are they consider swing beds
2018-01-17 07:08:26 PM ren there was a time was I thought is was an actual bed...LOL
2018-01-17 07:08:34 PM kristenamrein enter the chat room
2018-01-17 07:09:11 PM sylmat6 i thought they were the ones you hang in porches, lol
2018-01-17 07:09:12 PM ren Good question Ebroughton, I'd like to know too
2018-01-17 07:09:15 PM lphillips they have them mosty in rural areas.
2018-01-17 07:09:19 PM ruthiesister ok,, so everyone that just got here i need your start date and mep
2018-01-17 07:09:22 PM brinyanny We don't have swingbed
2018-01-17 07:09:49 PM ruthiesister sorry i missed the question i was writer the new people down
2018-01-17 07:09:55 PM ren sylmat6, exactly
2018-01-17 07:10:15 PM kristenamrein So what is the difference between a swing bed unit and a rehab unit?
2018-01-17 07:10:17 PM ebroughton I remember we had a reading on it in MEPAP 1- I do believe they said they are more common in rural areas. My question was....what makes a swingbed different from regular rehab
2018-01-17 07:10:18 PM lphillips MEP1 110717
2018-01-17 07:10:43 PM sylmat6 who qualifies as having swing beds, bandera is a small town major hospita is about 60miles away,
2018-01-17 07:10:45 PM ren Lphillips, we're in the same start date!
2018-01-17 07:11:12 PM brinyanny Annielys González MEP 1 110717
2018-01-17 07:11:24 PM lphillips :D
2018-01-17 07:11:25 PM ruthiesister a swingbed is set up for more of a short term rehab , and it is a goal driven program
2018-01-17 07:11:44 PM brian Brian Dooley MEPAP1-120517
2018-01-17 07:11:59 PM lphillips Does it have to do with the number of beds the whole facilty has.
2018-01-17 07:12:02 PM sylmat6 I have to ask tomorrow if we have them in our facility because we have short term rehab
2018-01-17 07:12:07 PM ruthiesister i work in a very small hospital ,,16 beds in the hospital
2018-01-17 07:12:11 PM jpocorello001 I have never even heard of siwngbed until now. I'm not sure but I dont think there are any down here.
2018-01-17 07:12:27 PM ruthiesister and most swingbed (swb) are in rural areas
2018-01-17 07:12:39 PM kristenamrein That must be what we have then. We have a 21 day rehab program, Independent, Assisted, and Nursing units
2018-01-17 07:13:18 PM sylmat6 what do you consider short term? how many days?
2018-01-17 07:13:27 PM ruthiesister most swb are for a short term ,, and in a hospital setting we have many kinds of swb patients
2018-01-17 07:13:31 PM brian short term varies
2018-01-17 07:13:37 PM brian sometimes a few days or months
2018-01-17 07:13:58 PM ruthiesister they say short term but there has to been a medical need for the patients to stay
2018-01-17 07:14:33 PM ren so they get rehab but also need medical support?
2018-01-17 07:14:41 PM ruthiesister right we have patient with wound vac , IV antisbac , then knees ,hips ,falls
2018-01-17 07:14:52 PM ren gotcha
2018-01-17 07:14:57 PM brinyanny ok
2018-01-17 07:15:07 PM ren makes sense now
2018-01-17 07:15:10 PM sylmat6 if there is a medical need for them to stay after a month, do they still consider swing beds or they change programs
2018-01-17 07:15:17 PM jpocorello001 They just opened a new short term facility, I will have to see if they have one.
2018-01-17 07:15:37 PM ruthiesister the biggest thing i have found is that there needs to be a medical need for a patient to stay in a swingbed unit
2018-01-17 07:16:05 PM ruthiesister i have had patients for 3 days and then 3 months
2018-01-17 07:16:40 PM ruthiesister ok ,, so how has a rehab unit
2018-01-17 07:17:38 PM brinyanny What kind of activities can we do with them
2018-01-17 07:18:06 PM kristenamrein I know we do, we call them the short-termers because they are only there for up to 21 days unless they have medical orders from a doctor that says that their stay needs to be extended.
2018-01-17 07:18:07 PM lphillips we have skilled therapy at our facility, however our facility specializes in ed stages of alzhimers/Demntia
2018-01-17 07:18:12 PM ren what about if a patient still needs rehab, but not medical support, would they then trans to a reg rehab?
2018-01-17 07:18:17 PM ruthiesister the proablem is never what kind of activities , most time is getting them to do activities
