2019-10-22 06:24:38 PM yvetter I have not tried reading stories before, but i really like that idea.
2019-10-22 06:24:45 PM chiquitacdelaney that sweet
2019-10-22 06:24:47 PM juliecormier kathy hughes is this in AL and if so did any residents frown upon this?
2019-10-22 06:24:53 PM taylorasia1989 Yes they say simply strecthing befor eoy lay down is suppose to help you sleep better
2019-10-22 06:24:54 PM kathyhughes We found out that she missed having her husband next to her when she went to bed..
2019-10-22 06:24:59 PM aehutchins I like the herbal tea
2019-10-22 06:25:06 PM juliecormier I think it is a great idea
2019-10-22 06:25:23 PM bnash a whole body pillow maybe could help
2019-10-22 06:25:27 PM kathyhughes We found that if someone sat down on the bed once she got in that she was much more calmer
2019-10-22 06:25:52 PM angelalgreathouse we also havea few of those life like cats the purr and meow. we use those with some of the residents. its soothes them.
2019-10-22 06:25:56 PM taylorasia1989 Body pillow or large stuffed animal
2019-10-22 06:25:58 PM ronda I can see that, that would help
2019-10-22 06:26:16 PM kathyhughes It was in Skilled Nursing, but it was an activity we dod in the evening and the residents enjoyed it and told the state how much they liked it
2019-10-22 06:26:18 PM chiquitacdelaney wow that awesome simple tactics
2019-10-22 06:26:27 PM erittenhouse1683 We have a few residents that have the life like cats, they love them.
2019-10-22 06:26:31 PM hryniefm All of these ideas sound really amazing. Did you have quite a bit of staff?
2019-10-22 06:26:45 PM yvetter Would you have one of the activities staff sit with her or would you have a CNA do that?
2019-10-22 06:26:49 PM aehutchins Body pillow! to fill up some of the bed
2019-10-22 06:27:04 PM kathyhughes Yes we placed that in her care plan so anyone could do it each night
2019-10-22 06:27:07 PM juliecormier ok I think it is a sweet jester
2019-10-22 06:27:12 PM splush2402 Does the routine of doing the same routine like the 'sweet dreams cart" help with dementia? Can they remember routine?
2019-10-22 06:27:15 PM rhondakapcsos how large was your skilled nursing facility
2019-10-22 06:27:23 PM regina1 our facility has these 2 cats that pur and make soothing kitty noises, they're like motion detected, if you squeeze their paw, it reacts. Its on the memory care, we are not open in that area yet, Im thinking that might make a resident uneasy
2019-10-22 06:27:43 PM adyson87 i love the sweet dreams cart!!!
2019-10-22 06:27:48 PM kathyhughes Alsp remember it is not an activity for all residents you have to know them but folks with behavior issues seemed to enjoy it
2019-10-22 06:27:51 PM splush2402 We have the cats and they love them
2019-10-22 06:27:54 PM aehutchins Some residents with dementia can remember routine
2019-10-22 06:27:58 PM shelbydonahue Splush2402, I am actually a certified dementia practicioner and yes! routine is actually key with dementia residents!
2019-10-22 06:28:08 PM chiquitacdelaney ok
2019-10-22 06:28:09 PM deniseweiss Now that the days are getting shorter, does anyone find that sundownig has become more prevalent in their facility? Not just longer, but more intense?
2019-10-22 06:28:12 PM regina1 yes it is
2019-10-22 06:28:16 PM splush2402 ok. I thought so.
2019-10-22 06:28:19 PM kathyhughes You have to know your residents not everyone was involved in the activity
2019-10-22 06:28:20 PM angelalgreathouse actually you may find the resident really like that. we have had great success with them as well as the life like baby we have.
2019-10-22 06:28:22 PM splush2402 ty
2019-10-22 06:28:23 PM lamearaj Yess!!!!
2019-10-22 06:28:26 PM deniseweiss sundowning*
2019-10-22 06:28:38 PM lamearaj my behavior patients have been very worked up lately
2019-10-22 06:28:55 PM juliecormier We have a nursery in our memory care and a life like baby and it really helps with sun downers
2019-10-22 06:28:56 PM shelbydonahue Weather changing here and really makes everyone in a tizzy!!!
2019-10-22 06:29:17 PM angelalgreathouse the baby really soothes a resident who ran a daycare when she becomes aggitatted we ask if she could help us with the baby
2019-10-22 06:29:19 PM ronda Our COPD patients have been really confused and frustrated lately.
2019-10-22 06:29:25 PM lamearaj baby care does wonders
2019-10-22 06:29:30 PM monoliver We have a couple of residets who call out for help all day...Ive learned that if I go offer to cover them and get them warmed up or talk to them they calm down for a least a short period
2019-10-22 06:29:30 PM erittenhouse1683 It has been very cloudy and rainy here lately, and that's been having a major effect on our folks
2019-10-22 06:29:42 PM kathyhughes What is triggering their behavior Ronda...
2019-10-22 06:29:47 PM taylorasia1989 I think its not so uch that they "remember" but that are nore comfortable with changes and steps if they are repitious, its like thaey are no longer caught off gaurd
2019-10-22 06:29:58 PM yvetter We have a baby doll in our Memory care unit and two life like cats that the residents love.
2019-10-22 06:30:26 PM monoliver yes the weather has seeming to have an effect on ours as well...not into coming to activities...pain in joints or too cold and such
2019-10-22 06:30:42 PM regina1 weather, time change this weekend too
2019-10-22 06:30:55 PM juliecormier I would like to get the cats for our Mc and I have noticed a big change in all our residents with the weather changing over
2019-10-22 06:31:01 PM angelalgreathouse we have are having those issues too.
2019-10-22 06:31:06 PM yvetter I have noticed the same Monoliver. Getting people in for range of motion in the mornings ahs become a little more difficult.
2019-10-22 06:31:08 PM ronda Agitation. I know with the fall there are a lot of allergens in the air. If I couldn't breath, I would be aitated too!!

2019-10-22 06:31:47 PM regina1 plus its not getting sunny early in the morning, its darker longer
2019-10-22 06:32:14 PM kathyhughes Ronda, they might like to go outside in the cold air or they might need an air purifier that would help
2019-10-22 06:32:18 PM juliecormier I wished we could get a blanket warmer or steamer for warm blankets I feel like with all the fronts causing aching and other issues this would make the residents feel so much better
2019-10-22 06:32:19 PM angelalgreathouse Rainy gloomy days are hard for residents.
2019-10-22 06:32:20 PM taylorasia1989 Yes our residents have been sneezing alot and more tired/sleepy
2019-10-22 06:32:29 PM chiquitacdelaney the timing of the day
2019-10-22 06:32:35 PM kathyhughes also you can get some lights that will help b
2019-10-22 06:32:39 PM regina1 flu shots, colds and cold bones
2019-10-22 06:32:46 PM rhondakapcsos I have a women really off in our memory care unit, she usually participates in all activities and for the past week is upset and crying that she found out her mother died and needs to leave to take care of matters, she herself is 94.
2019-10-22 06:32:53 PM kathyhughes but I am guessing that they are used to the change of seasons
2019-10-22 06:33:18 PM tamracreighton left the chat room
2019-10-22 06:33:28 PM kathyhughes Then Rhonda find out what she needs to take care of and help her with the process
2019-10-22 06:33:29 PM shelbydonahue Are people reminding her that her mother is gone? Or is she initiating the idea herself?
2019-10-22 06:33:42 PM yvetter Hmm that is interesting. I wonder if her mother passed during this time of the year?
2019-10-22 06:33:45 PM ronda Going outside in Western Texas this time of year makes their COPD much worse!
2019-10-22 06:33:48 PM tamracreighton enter the chat room
2019-10-22 06:33:54 PM kathyhughes I would guess that her mother died around this time of year
2019-10-22 06:34:04 PM buddyrmorvent There is some very interesting research on the effects of blue light versus yellow light as it relates to dementia.
2019-10-22 06:34:07 PM rhondakapcsos All she keeps saying is she needs to leave the building and go home
2019-10-22 06:34:08 PM juliecormier My guess also
2019-10-22 06:34:09 PM bnash thats sad
2019-10-22 06:34:18 PM kathyhughes then Ronda I would get them some air purifiers
2019-10-22 06:34:21 PM regina1 Ronda Im in dallas, the weather here has been crazy-not to mention the recent tornados
2019-10-22 06:34:28 PM kathyhughes they need some cold air
2019-10-22 06:34:37 PM shelbydonahue Oh sad..I know some will ask about their parents and then staff will say "they died" and then they relive it again :(
2019-10-22 06:34:38 PM kathyhughes how about personal AC's
2019-10-22 06:34:44 PM monoliver We have a lady who thinks she has been left at school and cant understand why her mom hasnt picked her up...this is an every day occuance
2019-10-22 06:35:10 PM bnash ya sounds familiar
2019-10-22 06:35:17 PM angelalgreathouse when we have a resident that really wants to leave or upset we usually can get her to talk on the phone to one of the staff members on another unit. this works. it takes her mind of leaving
2019-10-22 06:35:25 PM chiquitacdelaney sound like neglect ???
2019-10-22 06:35:31 PM lamearaj uncle arthur is one cause, but at my place we have been ndoing room changes and THAT is never easy for them to adjust to . Also getting or loosing room mates, i have a lady who believes her room mate is a man in stead of a woman
2019-10-22 06:35:57 PM lamearaj she use to be a care giver for an elderly man.. she is reliving that stage
2019-10-22 06:36:12 PM erittenhouse1683 I had a resident once that thought I was her husband and would sob when she thought I was leaving, thinking that her husband was leaving her for someone else. I tried my best to find alternate routes to not upset her.
2019-10-22 06:36:14 PM aehutchins Almost all of my residents with roomates dont trust them
2019-10-22 06:36:27 PM kathyhughes You should all take some time this week and look at the Teepa Snow videos on YouTube
2019-10-22 06:36:36 PM lamearaj will do
2019-10-22 06:36:38 PM ronda THey are on oxygen and the one I am thinking about griped and complained that the purifier was too loud. Nursing turned her oxygen up and the AC down.
2019-10-22 06:36:40 PM kathyhughes she has a great way to approach the residents
2019-10-22 06:36:41 PM lamearaj making that note

2019-10-22 06:38:18 PM bnash always a good idea getting other peoples input becuase they show us or have us think of other ideas always good to brainstorm
2019-10-22 06:38:29 PM emilynb1 i always found it helpful to let the residents call the person they are "looking for" or think they are "unsafe" and ensure them that everyhing is ok
2019-10-22 06:38:46 PM ronda We are trying everything we can think of. She has her own ac in her room.
2019-10-22 06:39:43 PM bnash earplugs
2019-10-22 06:39:47 PM kathyhughes Well I have a limitied idea for COPD but I would do some research on the disease and see if there is anything that we coulld do
2019-10-22 06:40:04 PM deniseweiss Yes, oftentimes it's beneficial to just go to that place with them and never correct any of their misperceptions, or do so very gently. They will forget very easily and it's not fair to make them relive any pain
2019-10-22 06:40:15 PM ronda Her husband said she is like this every year at this time, until we get our first freeze.
2019-10-22 06:40:15 PM juliecormier are any of you doing halloween trick or treating at your facility?
