2018-01-17 07:18:22 PM sylmat6 we have a rehab unit
2018-01-17 07:18:30 PM brian get them to attend
2018-01-17 07:19:12 PM lphillips I worked in skilled facility once and it is true, its hard to get skilled patients to participate in activities.
2018-01-17 07:19:21 PM ruthiesister most rehab patients do not what to do activities in a LTC ,
2018-01-17 07:19:22 PM kristenamrein Sometimes it's not that they don't want to attend, it's just that they're tired from all the workouts they have to do with therapy.
2018-01-17 07:19:39 PM kristenamrein But they attend anyways
2018-01-17 07:20:27 PM ren I can see that.
2018-01-17 07:20:32 PM lphillips I believe it frightens them to see what there life may be like for them. Th
2018-01-17 07:20:38 PM ruthiesister right sometime they don't want to jion because they feel they don't fit in with the other patients or don't want to feel they are one of them
2018-01-17 07:20:41 PM sylmat6 usually if they are short term in my faciility, they dont attend.
2018-01-17 07:21:01 PM jpocorello001 I could see them being tired from all the physical therapy and not wanting to participate in activity.
2018-01-17 07:21:04 PM sylmat6 they are usually younger
2018-01-17 07:21:24 PM ruthiesister so do any of you have activities on just the rehab unit
2018-01-17 07:21:42 PM lphillips I also worked in a theropay deartent ansd it is mostly because they are tired, some people are so deconditioned
2018-01-17 07:21:52 PM brian we have activities for both long term and rehab
2018-01-17 07:21:55 PM ebroughton I have alot of difficulties getting residents in rehab involved in activities. They just like to do their own thing
2018-01-17 07:21:57 PM kristenamrein Unless you count our recreation cart, then no, but they still get invited to everything.
2018-01-17 07:22:22 PM sylmat6 activities as well
2018-01-17 07:22:29 PM ruthiesister so a couple things i have learn ,,
2018-01-17 07:22:35 PM ren those of you who work in swb, do you find that the younger patients are the ones less likely to join in or vice versa
2018-01-17 07:23:07 PM sylmat6 yes
2018-01-17 07:23:09 PM ruthiesister i have found that if they think they are helping you or other patients some are more welling to join in
2018-01-17 07:23:12 PM ebroughton I have some very young residents in behavioral units (late 20's) they have difficulty joining in
2018-01-17 07:23:12 PM jpocorello001 When you say young, what age group?
2018-01-17 07:23:24 PM lphillips we had things available, laptops, ipods, cards, puzzles, reading material cross word puzzles, and 1:1
2018-01-17 07:23:29 PM kristenamrein I find that the younger ones are less likely to join because they have so many other appointments and family visits. Some still attend though.
2018-01-17 07:23:38 PM ren under 55
2018-01-17 07:24:03 PM sylmat6 i do have one that helps me out the other dont like to get out of room unless it is for smoke time
2018-01-17 07:24:15 PM lphillips I have noticed the residents are younger that are coming into our facility.
2018-01-17 07:24:31 PM ruthiesister do you think they would join if you told them you need some help with the activities
2018-01-17 07:24:44 PM kristenamrein I suppose so
2018-01-17 07:24:47 PM brian yeah I think so
2018-01-17 07:24:49 PM ren that's a good strategy
2018-01-17 07:24:49 PM ruthiesister see i don't get very many young ones
2018-01-17 07:25:07 PM ren I don't think we will either...
2018-01-17 07:25:12 PM ebroughton I have some that do things if they are helping. Setting up a craft, setting the table, etc.
2018-01-17 07:25:18 PM ruthiesister i also have my swb patient help with community projects also
2018-01-17 07:25:26 PM sylmat6 I do use this resident as much as i can so he can participate
2018-01-17 07:25:29 PM lphillips feeling needed and that you cant do it with out them does help me
2018-01-17 07:25:32 PM ren that's a good idea
2018-01-17 07:25:59 PM kristenamrein I get them involved with our travelogues. I like to take them to their native country, so I'll ask if they would mind coming to tell the group about where they came from or teach us a few words. They love it!
2018-01-17 07:26:03 PM jpocorello001 yes no matter what age you always want to feel needed.
2018-01-17 07:26:13 PM ren I used that strategy when I was a manager to get empl's on board...especially difficult ones
2018-01-17 07:26:16 PM ruthiesister i have them help with sending out flyer for relay for live ,, making things for head start program
2018-01-17 07:26:36 PM ren That's cool
2018-01-17 07:26:41 PM sylmat6 thats for sure
2018-01-17 07:26:43 PM brian I have one making daily announcements
2018-01-17 07:26:55 PM kristenamrein Sometimes I'll have them help set up for Bingo with handing out the chips or cards.
2018-01-17 07:27:01 PM lphillips thats great
2018-01-17 07:27:32 PM ruthiesister when you have the more they feel they are helping others the more they are willing to help and join in ,
2018-01-17 07:27:39 PM jpocorello001 It seems like everyone gets a little task to do no matter how big or small.
2018-01-17 07:27:40 PM sylmat6 Yes i do that as well, deliver mail
2018-01-17 07:27:42 PM ruthiesister so you need to think outside the box
2018-01-17 07:27:50 PM ebroughton I agree ruth
2018-01-17 07:28:06 PM ruthiesister does anyone have goe caching

2018-01-17 07:28:23 PM ruthiesister that is something for your younger one
2018-01-17 07:28:25 PM ren what kind of activities do you do in your swb unit, Ms. Ruthiesister

2018-01-17 07:30:25 PM jpocorello001 I believe I have heard that once before but can't remember.
2018-01-17 07:30:27 PM ruthiesister you make cachs , and hind them on your growns , and people come and find them and leaves stuff or write were they are from

2018-01-17 07:31:51 PM ruthiesister it is , and for your rehab people it's great they get outside and walk and therapy can walk them to the cach ,so it rehab at the same time

2018-01-17 07:34:50 PM kristenamrein What's that?
2018-01-17 07:34:50 PM ebroughton What is that
2018-01-17 07:34:53 PM jpocorello001 I have heard of painting rocks and leaving them for other people to find, that could be something for them to do.
2018-01-17 07:35:03 PM ruthiesister yep we do that too
2018-01-17 07:35:06 PM brian what is that

2018-01-17 07:38:06 PM ebroughton wow thats neat ruth
2018-01-17 07:38:12 PM jpocorello001 Thats a great idea!
2018-01-17 07:38:28 PM ruthiesister as you know your patients always know someone who is having a hard time and it's a good way to make them feel like they are helping them
2018-01-17 07:38:49 PM ren I really like that one
2018-01-17 07:39:04 PM abanks here in our city, pple paint rocks and hide them all over the city, when someone finds a painted rock they post it on the website, fredericton rocks on fb
2018-01-17 07:39:17 PM ebroughton our residents do a great job looking out for one another
2018-01-17 07:39:33 PM sylmat6 sjame here
2018-01-17 07:39:34 PM ruthiesister yep and my patient love to see who had found it where it has been
2018-01-17 07:40:02 PM ruthiesister yea ,, we found that one of ours made it to washington
2018-01-17 07:40:07 PM jpocorello001 when you do have a new patient, do you put together like a "welcome basket" type thing
2018-01-17 07:40:17 PM brinyanny WOW
2018-01-17 07:40:43 PM brian yeah we do
2018-01-17 07:40:48 PM ruthiesister no but that a great idea ,, other patients can help put it together
2018-01-17 07:40:51 PM ebroughton no we don't jpocorello, but i like that idea. what do you guys put in it?
2018-01-17 07:40:56 PM jpocorello001 Wow that far, neat!!
2018-01-17 07:40:57 PM abanks kinda, im trying to do more for the pallitive clients
2018-01-17 07:41:14 PM lphillips no but that is a great idea, what do you include in yours
2018-01-17 07:41:17 PM kristenamrein We do not, but our independents generally introduce themselves to the rehab people
2018-01-17 07:41:21 PM brian toiletry
2018-01-17 07:41:52 PM abanks and we just started sending sympathy cards to the family after a loved one passes
2018-01-17 07:41:56 PM sylmat6 admission does that but i had lots of lap blankets and i gave them to them so they could put them in the welcome packet, it said for activity dept
2018-01-17 07:41:56 PM sylmat6 says from activity dept
2018-01-17 07:41:58 PM ruthiesister you can put word puzzle books, book mark ,,
2018-01-17 07:42:05 PM jpocorello001 I don't work at a facility I just volunteer at one. Really not sure if they do one or not. I will ask tomorrow.
2018-01-17 07:42:55 PM kristenamrein @jpcorello, but that's how you could start. I started as a volunteer too!
2018-01-17 07:43:01 PM ruthiesister because after your assessment you will know a little about that patient so you can gear it for them
2018-01-17 07:43:38 PM ruthiesister ok,,, so living history book
2018-01-17 07:43:55 PM ebroughton whats tricky is if you are doing the 5 day assessment they may be nearing the end of their rehab stay
2018-01-17 07:45:05 PM ruthiesister i have a gaint binder and when i get a knew patient and we sit and talk over a couple day they state to talk about their lives ,, and we look things up about there life and have them write or we down load something from there live and put it in the book
2018-01-17 07:45:37 PM kristenamrein One of the facilities I volunteered at did the same thing.
2018-01-17 07:45:39 PM jpocorello001 yes hoping to work my way in.
2018-01-17 07:46:08 PM ebroughton we have kids come from a school once a year and do that with residents
2018-01-17 07:46:30 PM ruthiesister and other patient look at it and start talking about things in thier lives and it is a great way for peopel to start talking and learning about each other
2018-01-17 07:47:01 PM ebroughton there are no HIPPA issues with that?
2018-01-17 07:47:07 PM jpocorello001 such a great conversation starter
2018-01-17 07:47:43 PM sylmat6 good idea. some of my residents have old postcards and pictures, maybe i should start using them . with their permission of course
2018-01-17 07:47:44 PM ruthiesister because everyone comes from somewhere no because one they are writing the story and they know it's going to go in the book
2018-01-17 07:48:02 PM ebroughton that makes sense!
2018-01-17 07:48:15 PM ruthiesister we have stuff like towns ,, stores ,, bussieness ,
2018-01-17 07:48:24 PM ruthiesister schools ,jobs ,,farms
2018-01-17 07:48:30 PM kristenamrein It's also a great momento to give to the family if the resident passes
2018-01-17 07:48:52 PM ren so great
2018-01-17 07:48:52 PM ruthiesister old dances halls ,,
2018-01-17 07:49:10 PM jpocorello001 good idea!
2018-01-17 07:49:11 PM ruthiesister parades , fire depts ,
2018-01-17 07:49:25 PM brian great idea
2018-01-17 07:49:50 PM lphillips great idea
2018-01-17 07:49:56 PM ruthiesister ok.. so does anyone have a idea they would like to share
2018-01-17 07:50:16 PM kristenamrein For swing bed units or just in general?
2018-01-17 07:50:45 PM ruthiesister ok,, for the GEO Caching ,, this is what you are looking in the web
2018-01-17 07:51:01 PM ruthiesister in general
2018-01-17 07:51:21 PM ruthiesister all ideas can work for any patient
2018-01-17 07:52:29 PM ebroughton I got ahold of the zoo out here and for a great discounted rate they are letting my residents come visit the horses for a few hours. I have a few residents that love horses, but I couldn't find anywhere that could accomadate wheelchairs. The zoo has a special area for special needs kids so it worked out great. I didn't know this, but zoos often provided discounted rates (more than just the senior discount) to organizations that deal with high need individuals
2018-01-17 07:53:13 PM ruthiesister that cool ,,
2018-01-17 07:53:23 PM kristenamrein I've seen our therapists play a game I would like to try with my residents. There's a game on The Ellen Show called "Heads Up", where you download the app on your phone, open it, pick a category, and then the resident has to give you clues to say the word that is on your head (via the phone), has anyone tried this?
2018-01-17 07:53:39 PM lphillips I would love to do that. I want to take a group out for a movie
2018-01-17 07:53:57 PM ren that sounds like a lot of fun, I would love to play that
2018-01-17 07:53:58 PM ruthiesister heads up is a fun game ,,
2018-01-17 07:54:07 PM ebroughton I've played that before kristen, so fun! never tried it with the residents, but I think it would be awesome
2018-01-17 07:54:39 PM sylmat6 I will take them to plays that high school will do
2018-01-17 07:54:48 PM ruthiesister ok,, we are just about done ,, does anyone have any questions
2018-01-17 07:54:49 PM sylmat6 whats heads up
2018-01-17 07:55:00 PM ebroughton Nope. Thanks Ruth!
2018-01-17 07:55:03 PM brian no
2018-01-17 07:55:08 PM kristenamrein How about Trivial Persuit? Has anyone tried that with the residents? I've been working on that for about a year but can't figure out how to not have them handle pieces that are dangerous.
2018-01-17 07:55:08 PM brian thanks Ruth
2018-01-17 07:55:15 PM ruthiesister it's a game you down load the app
2018-01-17 07:55:20 PM lphillips No, thank you
2018-01-17 07:55:23 PM ren No, I'm good.
2018-01-17 07:55:34 PM brinyanny Game of colors is very funny
2018-01-17 07:55:36 PM ruthiesister ok,, make sure you have left me your start date and mep
2018-01-17 07:56:05 PM jpocorello001 They do a whats your story, where the ativity director comes up with questions and the residents answer a little about themselves
2018-01-17 07:56:07 PM sylmat6 no, thank you
2018-01-17 07:56:18 PM kristenamrein My start date for MEPAP was January 2nd, if that helps, Ruthie. Thanks so much for hosting tonight!
2018-01-17 07:56:29 PM jpocorello001 Have a good night everyone! Thank you Ruth :)
2018-01-17 07:56:30 PM ruthiesister mep 1-2
2018-01-17 07:56:34 PM ebroughton left the chat room
