2018-02-12 06:21:33 PM jwimberly81 We are a big/small family
2018-02-12 06:21:34 PM joanec hi everyone
2018-02-12 06:21:38 PM karynbrinkley Hi
2018-02-12 06:21:42 PM cbockis one example everyday for meals all dept heads transport to dining room and assist for rounds
2018-02-12 06:22:06 PM jwimberly81 we talk to eachother and we are just always there for eachother
2018-02-12 06:22:16 PM cbockis we give Token of kindness grams to those who go above and beyond
2018-02-12 06:22:23 PM olivcar Our company provides a hospitality training that really shows the staff and residents that we are a family, and to provide more than good customer service, but exceptional interactions that leave the staff, residents, and visitors smiling
2018-02-12 06:22:24 PM karynbrinkley So, let's think about ways to bridge the gap. We can't increase their pay and some we can't turn around but...if you were the ED, what would you do?
2018-02-12 06:22:32 PM karynbrinkley Love the ideas
2018-02-12 06:22:32 PM cbockis Residents host employee appreciation each month
2018-02-12 06:22:46 PM karynbrinkley yes
2018-02-12 06:23:10 PM karynbrinkley When people are happy at work, residents are happy
2018-02-12 06:23:11 PM joanec that's a very good thing
2018-02-12 06:23:12 PM jesjtipton I had a employer that asked during the interview your favorite food or drink... they made star bags and awarded a star badge on each shift each day.. At the end of the month, they drew out of those names for a door prize.
2018-02-12 06:23:12 PM jwimberly81 I would give everyone a pat on the back and know that we are all in this together
2018-02-12 06:23:15 PM karynbrinkley families love it
2018-02-12 06:23:19 PM cbockis show support. one team
2018-02-12 06:23:45 PM karynbrinkley Has anybody's ED every had lunch in the breakroom?
2018-02-12 06:23:45 PM lidiaal06 enter the chat room
2018-02-12 06:23:48 PM jwimberly81 I am all about friendship lollipops and rainbows
2018-02-12 06:23:49 PM karynbrinkley ever
2018-02-12 06:23:49 PM joanec at least we know they would not lie about how they feel
2018-02-12 06:23:58 PM cbockis yes
2018-02-12 06:23:59 PM olivcar Don't ever say, "that's not my job," but help when needed
2018-02-12 06:24:00 PM lidiaal06 Finally made it!
2018-02-12 06:24:02 PM lidiaal06 Hello
2018-02-12 06:24:04 PM lisai for us we all get along and work well together we are a team we are family but
2018-02-12 06:24:05 PM karynbrinkley Hi
2018-02-12 06:24:07 PM jesjtipton Yes, our ED has a breakfast and lunch monthly with front line staff
2018-02-12 06:24:10 PM olivcar He has from time to time.
2018-02-12 06:24:11 PM janaj Send a card signed by residents for appreciation
2018-02-12 06:24:13 PM cbockis we are like that
2018-02-12 06:24:14 PM sjorgensen Negativity seems to run rampant wherever you go...especially when you have a nurse who thinks she knows more than anyone else!
2018-02-12 06:24:17 PM lisai this new hire is a ball of negativity
2018-02-12 06:24:18 PM karynbrinkley That's great!
2018-02-12 06:24:35 PM cbockis our admin and staff sometimes eat with residents for an activity
2018-02-12 06:24:37 PM karynbrinkley oh, not a ball of negativity
2018-02-12 06:24:46 PM sjorgensen Activities seems to "set the tone" of the day!
2018-02-12 06:24:51 PM jwimberly81 We don't eat together because of the times we eat aren't the same
2018-02-12 06:24:58 PM cbockis We are the souls of the home
2018-02-12 06:25:03 PM janaj No break room
2018-02-12 06:25:04 PM karynbrinkley True!
2018-02-12 06:25:07 PM jwimberly81 My ED and I get food together
2018-02-12 06:25:14 PM sjorgensen We have to be at 100% every day whether we feel like it or not!!!
2018-02-12 06:25:18 PM joanec i agree with you on never say that is notmy job because we can always find someone who can help with the issue
2018-02-12 06:25:30 PM karynbrinkley I think programming breathes life into a community
2018-02-12 06:25:38 PM karynbrinkley and the staff
2018-02-12 06:25:40 PM jwimberly81 true that
2018-02-12 06:25:40 PM janaj Amen
2018-02-12 06:25:41 PM jesjtipton our team tries to treat other depts to goodies each month
2018-02-12 06:25:48 PM sjorgensen Yes...but, WHO does the programming??? The Activities staff!
2018-02-12 06:25:54 PM jwimberly81 I do
2018-02-12 06:26:01 PM cbockis yes but the way of life too thats a culture in itself we set the tone
2018-02-12 06:26:01 PM karynbrinkley Yessss!
2018-02-12 06:26:04 PM joanec i do also
2018-02-12 06:26:27 PM cbockis empower your other departments
2018-02-12 06:27:08 PM cbockis dietary hosts breakfast for small groups weekly. i just go and support. they do the rest. they have ownership and feel good about it
2018-02-12 06:27:09 PM olivcar Even something as simple as a smile or "How are you today?" makes a huge difference, instead of just passing one another in the hall but engaging them
2018-02-12 06:27:17 PM sjorgensen Person centered care and quality of life need to be taken into consideration...those residents LIVE in those facilities and should be shown love, patience, kindness, respect!
2018-02-12 06:27:55 PM karynbrinkley I think education on guilt and grief regarding families and the "why" behind their emotion is important.
2018-02-12 06:28:20 PM sjorgensen Training and Education!
2018-02-12 06:28:22 PM cbockis yes the Alz group has good programs
2018-02-12 06:28:22 PM karynbrinkley You are right, they live there and they have given up so mych.
2018-02-12 06:28:28 PM joanec sometimes i go out of my way to help
2018-02-12 06:28:53 PM karynbrinkley If you give help to nursing, you will have their support at times as well.
2018-02-12 06:28:53 PM jwimberly81 That is just what we do
2018-02-12 06:28:53 PM janaj SOme are so angry, and ask everyday, " Why am I here ?"
2018-02-12 06:29:00 PM lidiaal06 same here... I have "adopted" plenty of grandpas and grandmas
2018-02-12 06:29:02 PM karynbrinkley They forget
2018-02-12 06:29:11 PM karynbrinkley Awwww
2018-02-12 06:29:11 PM jesjtipton I say that we should be the resident services dept... most of us provide all the services to our residents.. from shopping to activities, to transportation, socializing and the fun stuff.... WE truly make the community run....
2018-02-12 06:29:27 PM karynbrinkley You are right
2018-02-12 06:30:02 PM cbockis yes sometimes they forget but when you are in it with a good attitude they respect you more and realize its not just games we do
2018-02-12 06:30:04 PM lisai so have i
2018-02-12 06:30:05 PM karynbrinkley Ok, so you guys seem to be good with this so I want to move to another topic.
2018-02-12 06:30:10 PM jesjtipton Everyone feels like we have the "FUN" jobs constanty.... but they dont see all the hardwork we put in..
2018-02-12 06:30:18 PM sjorgensen True!
2018-02-12 06:30:20 PM janaj Somedays, your hug may be the only one they get, it means so much
2018-02-12 06:30:22 PM lisai very true
2018-02-12 06:30:22 PM joanec true
2018-02-12 06:30:26 PM karynbrinkley true
2018-02-12 06:30:26 PM sjorgensen Nobody seems to know what we do!
2018-02-12 06:30:32 PM lisai or care
2018-02-12 06:30:35 PM jesjtipton That is true
2018-02-12 06:30:38 PM lidiaal06 or seem enough!
2018-02-12 06:30:42 PM joanec yes they do
2018-02-12 06:30:55 PM joanec it's just they don't show it
2018-02-12 06:31:07 PM karynbrinkley So, you guys are feeling that your work goes unnoticed a little
2018-02-12 06:31:21 PM joanec mine no
2018-02-12 06:31:21 PM lisai sometimes other staff do not even want to talk about rec issues or needs
2018-02-12 06:31:22 PM jwimberly81 Sometimes but not all the time
2018-02-12 06:31:23 PM cbockis i dont
2018-02-12 06:31:26 PM karynbrinkley What is it you need to hear?
2018-02-12 06:31:30 PM sjorgensen Joanec...you MUST be in activities!!! Haha
2018-02-12 06:31:35 PM karynbrinkley ha
2018-02-12 06:31:39 PM lisai ha
2018-02-12 06:31:48 PM joanec yes i am
2018-02-12 06:31:57 PM sjorgensen NURSING thinks they are the most important!!!
2018-02-12 06:32:09 PM lidiaal06 sometimes that is true.......
2018-02-12 06:32:10 PM janaj I think because we do not make money for the company such as Nursing and therapy, we will not have the respect we deserve.
2018-02-12 06:32:12 PM jesjtipton Maybe to staff... but our residents and families see all the things we do and appreciate them..
2018-02-12 06:32:24 PM karynbrinkley and we are there to serve them
2018-02-12 06:32:37 PM sjorgensen I don't know HOW to get those other departments to "think like a TEAM!!!" No one department could function without the other departments!
2018-02-12 06:32:58 PM olivcar I think it's really wasy for someone who is stressed and working on ADL's or paperwork all day to look at us doing crafts, cooking, etc., the "fun" stuff and get jealous that we get paid to do it. However, what is not understood is the paperwork and the constant development that we are in to ensure that our activities are diverse, compliant, individualized, etc.
2018-02-12 06:33:01 PM joanec even before when i used to be a cna i always care for my resident
2018-02-12 06:33:02 PM jwimberly81 I am very much respected in activities and everyone loves to help me
2018-02-12 06:33:07 PM lidiaal06 In my building, activities are in charge or dinning room. (nurses never show up) we do store runs, do transport
2018-02-12 06:33:08 PM cbockis it has to start with leadership
2018-02-12 06:33:10 PM jesjtipton Somedays I have to swallow my pride and know my worth..
2018-02-12 06:33:10 PM sjorgensen It was a "hard" Monday today!!! Can you tell? LOL
2018-02-12 06:33:27 PM karynbrinkley Well, it is communication
2018-02-12 06:33:36 PM cbockis set the tone
2018-02-12 06:33:37 PM sjorgensen I agree!
2018-02-12 06:33:37 PM karynbrinkley I have worked with all those obstacles
2018-02-12 06:33:41 PM olivcar That being said, it seems helpful when involving the staff because it gives them a break and allows for them to do something different and take a minute to walk in your shoes.
2018-02-12 06:33:49 PM sjorgensen Does it ever get better???
2018-02-12 06:33:49 PM joanec i really don't pay too much attention tothe nurses on how they feelbecause my residents are more important tome
2018-02-12 06:33:54 PM karynbrinkley But at our core, we are all similar
2018-02-12 06:34:01 PM karynbrinkley I was in activities
2018-02-12 06:34:01 PM jesjtipton I have a good rapport with staff, but I had to build it. It didnt happen overnight and I work at it daily.
2018-02-12 06:34:10 PM lisai i hope so
2018-02-12 06:34:12 PM sjorgensen IF we are all there for the residents! They should ALWAYS come first!
2018-02-12 06:34:16 PM olivcar We actually hold an annual activities inservice so that we can openly talk about our differences and provide better understanding of one another
2018-02-12 06:34:22 PM karynbrinkley Now I am an ED and consultant who does start up ALF/MC communities
2018-02-12 06:34:35 PM sjorgensen Brave woman!
2018-02-12 06:34:35 PM janaj I think if we had quantifiable goals this would be more of a team effort
2018-02-12 06:34:45 PM jwimberly81 I have to say we are all in this together and I know what the CNAs are going through and I am always there for them and if they need help I will be there
2018-02-12 06:34:48 PM jesjtipton Great idea olivcar!
2018-02-12 06:35:03 PM olivcar Thanks!
2018-02-12 06:35:05 PM karynbrinkley I think culture is the biggest differentiator
2018-02-12 06:35:22 PM karynbrinkley It starts at the top
2018-02-12 06:35:31 PM jesjtipton How do you establish culture in new communities karyn?
2018-02-12 06:35:31 PM cbockis i started in dietary became a CNA went back to activities
2018-02-12 06:35:40 PM sjorgensen I have offered to help TRAIN the CNA's in the memory care area...the nurse said that "her" employees don't have to "report to ME!" How do you handle THAT mentality?
2018-02-12 06:35:41 PM karynbrinkley I have all our leaders reading a book called Primed to Perform
2018-02-12 06:35:50 PM karynbrinkley Here's the deal
2018-02-12 06:36:01 PM joanec i can say that the CNAs are the eyes of the nurses because they spend more time with the residents than the nurses
2018-02-12 06:36:44 PM sjorgensen Yes...but...if the CNA's aren't trained in memory care, they can (and I've heard it myself) get abusive if they don't understand the disease!
2018-02-12 06:36:45 PM jesjtipton I will have to look for Primed to Perform
2018-02-12 06:36:54 PM karynbrinkley if work isn't fun and you don't have purpose, it can be a problem. You also have to train your leaders to listen to staff, train them, communicate with them, celebrate their successses...etc..
2018-02-12 06:36:56 PM cbockis NYT best seller
2018-02-12 06:37:22 PM cbockis i do some educations and I love it
2018-02-12 06:37:24 PM lisai we are trying to do that
2018-02-12 06:37:35 PM sjorgensen It WILL be an uphill battle...but, I'm still willing to try!
2018-02-12 06:37:39 PM cbockis try OASIS
2018-02-12 06:37:44 PM joanec very true because it the way you do your job that makeit fun
2018-02-12 06:38:06 PM karynbrinkley Change can start with us
2018-02-12 06:38:14 PM lidiaal06 so true!
2018-02-12 06:38:24 PM karynbrinkley Then, we are free to create the best for our residents
2018-02-12 06:38:25 PM sjorgensen I DO believe that...that's why I haven't given up!
2018-02-12 06:38:32 PM joanec i love orientation
2018-02-12 06:38:37 PM jesjtipton Ive been reading John Maxwell The Maxwell Daily Reader
2018-02-12 06:38:48 PM sjorgensen What's that about?
2018-02-12 06:38:50 PM jesjtipton so true!
2018-02-12 06:39:29 PM jesjtipton daily short stories to help you influence the people around you and inspire you as a leader
2018-02-12 06:39:39 PM lisai if not staff at center the ALF send the PRT to our center,, non bathed, their hygiene is just bad so when they arrive to center we spend time grooming them
2018-02-12 06:39:40 PM karynbrinkley Let's talk a minute about how we can incorporate the most for our residents outside of the culture changes with the staff.
2018-02-12 06:40:21 PM karynbrinkley Lisa, the care is not negotiable so that should be reported to your managers.
2018-02-12 06:40:34 PM karynbrinkley Love the short stories
2018-02-12 06:40:52 PM karynbrinkley How many are on your team in your activity dept?

2018-02-12 06:42:04 PM jesjtipton How many people are actually hands on? I had a manager who wasnt hands on.. We did everything while she sat at the desk
2018-02-12 06:42:07 PM sjorgensen In a 110 bed facility, I have 3 F/T staff and 1 P/T weekend staff...Not enough for an 89,000 square foot building! That's basically a 1:50 ratio.
2018-02-12 06:42:11 PM joanec you have everything on your sholder
